Camcorders - DVD vs Non DVD?

Q. I want to buy a 'family' camcorder and am baffled on all of the choices. Why would I want to buy a DVD Camcorder vs one that records on a different format?

A. SOME DVD camcorder can go straight from the camcorder to DVD player (Sonys do however a JVC a friend bought didn't work in DVD player)
DVD camcorders don't need any winding eg they can find a blank section on the disc in under a second and no over/under recording (when you record over the end of the last section recorded or there is a gap between recording sessions)
Lasers on DVD get less dirt on them than tape head do (less cleaning required)
But most camcorder discs are 80 minutes and tapes are 90.
The latest camcorders how use memory sticks or RAM memory (no moving parts)

Why won't my camcorder DVD work in my DVD player or laptop?
Q. I bought a DVD camcorder and it plays 31/2 disc. When I am done using the camcorder I can play it back in my camcorder to view, but I can't seem to view it in my DVD player or laptop. I tried a couple of different disc so I know it is not the disc. A little help here please.

A. Your camcorder probably uses DVD-RAM discs, which most laptops and DVD player's do not support.

You can either buy a DVD player that supports DVD-RAM, or you can buy DVD +/- R Discs for your camcorder. If you use a +/- r you will need to finalize it before you can watch it on your DVD player. When you do this it's locked forever and you can't edit or change it.

I have a dvd that doesn't work properly, should I get it fixed?

Q. I have a camcorder dvd and was faulty before I finialized it. I can send it to someone who says can fix it and do editing and put the readable scenes on a new dvd. This will cost some money of course. Should I do this or should / can I do this myself. I have tried to do it but it will not read the whole faulty disc. Any suggestions or should i just get it done by someone who knows how?

A. Try this first http://www.handbrake.fr/ this is a video converter. You might try this, it works for pictures, not sure about dvd videos, http://www.recuva.com and try a deep scan. These programs are free.

And just to make sure that you know how to download a minidvd,
If you have a mini dvd camcorder….
You will have to finalize your dvd in the camera and then put the dvd in your computer's DVD burner (top loading only) and then you will have to convert the files (I downloaded http://www.handbrake.fr/ file converter free) and import them into your editing program. Use the HELP feature in your editing program to learn about editing. Usually you would import your videos and drop them in to the timeline, add transitions, menus, music, etc. Once you are ready to burn, your project will be burned to a different DVD and you can file the original away.

How do you lose the camcorder Icons when burning to DVD?
Q. I have a JVC GZ-MG37U camcorder. The DVD burner is a Sony. When I burn to DVD the Camcorder Icons are on the DVD. I would like to only see what I am trying to record. Thanks for any assistance.

A. That shouldn't be happening, try calling the camera peoples tech support.

I have a faulty dvd from a camcorder video, what can I do?

Q. My camcorder dvd is faulty, but there are some clips in the dvd that are ok. Some are not as there is an error on the disc. The footage is very important. How can I save the clips that work. I have tried taking the whole file from the disc onto computer but this does not solve the problem. If only i could delete parts that dont work. Anyone had this problem?

A. send it back, or send it to the manufacturer and have them fix it.

What software could i download for free to make videos?
Q. I have raw video that needs to be edited into a movie trailer for a school project. It's on a mini-dvd from the camcorder (dvd plus?) so windows movie maker doesnt read the files.

WHat program can i use [download for free] to edit, add text [like titles and narratives and stuff] and add music to the video?

and it also should be easy to use. this is my first time editing vids. thanks!

A. depends .. if the dvd has been finalized i would rip it to pc with dvd decrypter then convert to avi with autogk .. then moviemaker will open it ..

Can you transfer the videos from a cd from a camcorder cd to a dvd cd?

Q. My friends and I did a project on my friends camcorder (DVD) and the little CD has our video on it. So, I was wondering how we could get the video onto a normal sized DVD CD. Is it possible, and if it is, how do you do it?

A. Yes. You can use Nero, or other DVD authoring programs.

How do you play and save a video in (dvd-r format ) to your computer?
Q. I have no idea what I'm doing. A friend gave me a small camcorder dvd, so I could download the video to "youtube". I gave it a shot and nothing happened. I really need step by step instructions. Starting from right after you put it in your tower. Thanx.

A. Those mini DVD camcorders are neat, but you need to use the correct software in order to make a YOUTUBE type video. The software should be either boxed with your camcorder or downloadable. The trouble with the camcorder is that it probably will not record in a format that is usable for YOUTUBE. You need to use the program to compose and clip the video, then convert it to a common AVI file. Once that is done you can go to this link, it will show you how to upload a video!
