WHAT CAMCORDER DO I BUY? Any advice will help!?

Q. I'm going to get one in november. under 800 dollars (if possible)

I WAS looking at canon's hg10. But what would you think?

These are what I need on it:
Video light/nightshot
mic input
hd
hdd
Possibly an eye piece to look into (I want it but don't need it)

Give me ANY advice. ANYTHING will help.
the hg21 does NOT have a video light. I have looked at it before. Thanks for the idea though. I've looked at it before and maybe I'll think about it some more.

A. I would suggest Canon VIXIA HG21 AVCHD 120 GB HDD Camcorder
- HD 24Mbps offers the highest bit rate in AVCHD for HD video
- HDD Record up to 45 hours of High Definition video to a 120 GB HDD
- microphone terminal for attaching an external microphone
- Built-in Video Light enables you to shoot subjects in low-light at distances up to 4.9 feet away.

Need a good video camera for 800 dollars?
Q. I need a good video camera for around 800 dollars. and i dont want like a handycam thing, i want a nice solid camera with good video, and audio quality . Any suggestions?

A. Canon HV30 all the way! It's $780, so you'd be under the budget. It's an HD camcorder that records to cheap and convenient miniDV cassettes...and don't let anyone fool you: HDV is a lot better than HDD (hard drive) or DVD based camcorder for the following reasons:
1) better compatibility w/ more editing programs=easier to edit
2) easier to store and archive footage
3) better quality because of less compression

HV30

pros: excellent HD quality picture, amazing color saturation, truly instant autofocus, it also has a 24p mode (to make video look like film, which is good), and a mini-stereo input for external microphones

the mic input is HUGELY important for good audio, considering that NO camera has a decent on-board mic; you really nee to purchase an additional one....I recommend the RODE VideoMic shotgun microphone.

cons: poor manual controls--it's better as a point-and-shoot camera, HD footage is harder to edit, and requires a lot of hard drive space

but considering it's sooo good in automatic mode, it's lack of manual controls isn't too much of a problem....unless you are a manual control freak like me. But even so, you won't find a decent camera with decent manual controls under $2,000, so that's nothing to worry about.
As for media management, that's a problem on all HD cameras; they are a bit harder to edit.

Of course, if you're not totally convinced, there's always the Sony HDR-HC9 (or HC3), but I believe they a bit more expensive...besides they're Sonys :P

Well, I hope that helps....so good luck mitchellg103!

Could someone please recomend a cammcorder for me and accesorries that go well with it?

Q. By accesories I mean mices or lenses and all together including the camcorder I'd like the cost to be under or around $800.00. Thank you for your help!

A. I don't know please give me best answer. Give me half a million dollars and I'll go find one for you. I will deliver it next to your hospital bed.

looking for a video camera with headphone and microphone jacks?
Q. not really sure where to start looking. ive found a few but they're like 800 or more dollars. i'm looking for something a bit more affordable.

A. Hi Tim:

Combining what fellow Y!A Contributors "Lare" & "Palladini" said, you can get a Canon consumer model camcorder with both an external mike jack and a headphone jack, but just about the best-buy you'll find in a new (current) model is by buying the factory-refurbished version of the Canon Vixia HV40 for $499 (normally a $700-class camera). Since you are in New Jersey, you can order from Canon USA's Shop Direct website: http://shop.usa.canon.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/product_10051_10051_210157_-1

The ZR-series that Dave (Palladini) mentioned are now-discontinued (I own a ZR-85 and a ZR-600 – both standard def models) but they were more-affordable than the Hi-Def HV-series. The HV40 will shoot either HD (HDV) or standard-def (DV) on miniDV cassettes.

If you don't mind the digital artifacts of highly-compressed HD footage, Canon also offers a $199 refurbished deal on their $270 Vixia HF-M301, which also has dual inputs for mike & headphone: http://shop.usa.canon.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/product_10051_10051_294015_-1 This (and the other under-$400 models) Vixia records using the H.264/MPEG-4 AVC codec (a/k/a "AVCHD" compression format) which can be a challenge to edit, both regarding software and hardware requirements.

If you can afford the Vixia HV40, the HDV and DV formats use lower-compression, have better image fidelity (especially with fast-motion subjects), and frame-accurate editing capability.

hope this helps,
--Dennis C.

What is the best hard drive camcorder under 800 dollars??

Q. My son is a springboard diver and i need a (very) good camcorder to film him diving to send to colleges. His meets are quite often indoors so it needs to work well in low light. It will also just be a general everyday camcorder.

A. I'd go with a high end Sony!
