Q. I have a Sony Digital 8 Handycam Camcorder and I have a usb cable for it but I cant put my footage from it onto my laptop all I can do is record while it is connected to my computer.

A. You should be able to open up your documents program then look at the top where you would find the different drives listed and find one labeled SONY DIGITAL 8 (D:) it could be a different letter though. Then open the file and find the one you want and the download to your computer.

Q. I have a digital 8 camcorder. What type of hi8 film is the best? I see different kinds still being sold as "premium" "camcorder tape" or "standard quality." I'm thinking that if the data is stored in digital form anyway, it doesn't matter if the tape is "standard" or "premium." There is no noise when it is stored as digital data, right?
A. I would receommed that you look for the best per/minute price on name brand metal particle tapes. The premium, standard, etc. designators are marketing terms and are not very reliable to indicate actual tape quality.
The concern with choosing a tape for digital video purposes is not noise so much as longevity and compatible tape formulation. Digital8 systems are designed to record most accurately on metal particle tapes. Formerly MP's were only available when labelled as Hi8 or Digital8 but this has now changed and almost all 8mm tapes are metal particle formulations as well.
You should archive your recordings at SP recording speed because LP may be difficult to playback on a different machine because of minute variations if the tape path alignment.
Also, longer tapes are available under Digital8 labels than Hi8 or 8mm. The 90/135 Digital8 tapes will go 90 minutes in SP vs. the 60 minutes that a Hi8/8mm 120/180 tape will run in a Digital8 machine.
