What are the differences between Final Cut Pro X and Motion 5?

Q. Also I've heard they go hand in hand as well sort of. How is that? Also what are the best video editing Softwares for the Mac? I hear final cut studio is but is there anything better out there that's under $500 for an iMovie wiz? Thanks guys haha

A. Motion is used to create and edit motion graphics, titling for video production and film production, and 2D and 3D compositing for visual effects. Final Cut Pro is professional video editing software. Basic film cutting / editing is done in Final Cut Pro. Special tasks related to effects are handled by Motion. For a couple of years, Motion was included with FCP.

You don't need this stuff. You are not making a Hollywood movie or a Superbowl commercial. For home movies made on a $200 camcorder that you can operate with one hand tied behind you, iMovie is all you need.

"is there anything better out there that's under $500 for an iMovie wiz?"
There is nothing better out there. End of sentence. 49% of Hollywood editors use Final Cut Pro. Second place goes to Avid Media Composer with 22%.

How can I watch my imported videos from my camera on my mac book?
Q. I'm needing to edit a movie I final cut and for some reason the videos I imported from my camera can only be watched on iMovie. iMovie is a pain in the ass, so how can I use the clips as videos for final cut.

A. Hi Clark:

You've been around Y!A long enough to know that the more details you give us, the better we can answer.

First, what brand & model # camera or camcorder do you have? Or are you referring to the iSight webcam ON your MacBook? [Makes a big difference as to file format and video-importing into FCP.] And which model MacBook (some don't have FireWire) and which versions of FCP & iMovie you have is also important to know. [iMovie has gone through major changes since v6, and I've heard nothing but complaints about FCP X.]

Some versions of FCP can only import camera footage via FireWire. And if you haven't updated your QuickTime version lately, you might not handle HD video properly.

Give us the file extensions for the video clips you currently have on your Mac's hard drive, and if they are in HD, add what resolution & frame-rate (e.g., 720p @30fps, etc.) they were shot at.

Hopefully you know the "Additional Details" drill: mouse-over "Edit" on the Action Bar, click the link & type away.

I'll look for an update, and post one myself.

hope this helps,
--Dennis C.

Do I really need a camcorder to shoot video?

Q. I've been thinking about buying a Kodak PlaySport camcorder, and was pretty excited about it, but my sister has volunteered to send me a Sony camera that is a few years old and also shoots video. She says I won't need a camcorder at all, but I'm still skeptical. Can anyone give me some advice?

A. Yes, your sister's camera can likely shoot video. Most digital still cameras have a feature to shoot video.

I have a digital still camera from about 10 years ago that can shoot video clips (but limited to 30-second long clips by its built-in memory, because it wasn't able to transfer data directly to an SD card fast enough for video without dropping frames, so they designed it that way -- today's cameras and SD cards don't have this limitation).

There are shooters using new models of DSLRs to make beautiful HD video. But if your sister's camera is a few years old, it may shoot only SD video, even though it can take nice high resolution still photos. Still cameras are designed to be good still cameras first, even if they can also shoot video.

I would get the PlaySport. It shoots HD video, and is rugged and water-resistant.

What is the longest lasting battery i can get for my camcorder?
Q. It's the Kodak playsport Zx3. I've seen many different batteries for it, but don't know which one provides the longest use. I need help from an expert. Please be descriptive, I want to know exactly the details that make it the best. This camcorder takes great quality videos, it just barely lasts any time, less than an hour. More like half an hour, even though some say it is standard for the battery to last about an hour. I really am looking for a big change.

A. there is only one correct battery for a Playsport Zx3 and that is the KLIC7004. my experience is the Kodak brand battery works best, i have tried internet generic replacements and tossed them out. you should be able to get the Kodak battery at Walmart or photo stores.

Which cellphone with very good photo and video camera quality?

Q. I want a cellphone with very good photo and video camera quality. Which mobile phone is better Sony Ericsson or HTC or Nokia? Please suggest the model number.

A. I would suggest an LG viewty,i dont own one,but i believe they have awesome video capture and still image capabilities, failing that,i would try the Sony ericsson K850i, which uses a 5.0 megapixel camera, this has slightly worse video capture functions (video can sometimes stop mid frame) but surpasses the LG's image capture.on the cheaper side of things you could opt for the K810i (the K850i's little bro) which packs a 3.2 megapixel camera, with superb still imaging capabilities, however this wouldnt be a good choice for video lovers, as the video recording is near that of a vga camera. If none of those take your eye then a perfect choice for video capture (i dont realy know how this performs with still imaging) would be the Motorola Rizr z10,which captures video at a movie quality of 30fps.as for your question of which brand of phone is better i would opt for sony ericsson,as HTC aren't really comparable with nokia or the former,as they tend to be smart phones, however nokia is a great brand for first time phone users due to easy interface.

What camcorder takes the best video in the dark?

Q. I am trying to find a camcorder to buy for ghost hunting which requires being in the dark... What camera is the best quality dark shot?

A. Hi C!
I think its cool you're ghost hunting. It's been a passion of mine for the past 2 years. I work in an old school building that some suspect is haunted. I have taken some interesting video footage there and submitted it to some ghost video sites.
To get back to your question, I use the JVC GZ-HD300A Everio 60GB Hard Drive Camcorder. I've used other inferior cameras which are fine in the daylight but this cam has the best twilight and night mode out there.
Believe me, I know how it feels to miss a chance at filming something amazing because I don't have the right camera. You can find this camcorder at http://offto.net/onsalecom/ for a very competitive price.
Just search "camcorders" and click "JVC"
I got it from their site after shopping around. They shipped it quick and reliably and their customer service is excellent.
Good luck, and drop me a line and let me know if you catch anything paranormal on film.

All the best, Jimmy

What is the cheapest camcorder with slow motion capacity?

Q. I would like a camcorder for my birthday that has slow motion capacity. Under 300 dollars would be useful, but I know there aren't that many at that price. I want the best quality, however, for that price range. I don't want a camera with 5 fps, god no.

A. Recording at a slow frame rate won't provide you with very good slow motion playback. You want to record at a high frame rate...

For example, some Sony camcorders have a "SmoothSlowRecord" feature that allows fast frame rate capture (120 fps) for a 3 second burst. When played back at NTSC standard 30 fps, the playback takes 12 seconds (or 25% of the original speed). The Casio Exilim line has longer high frame rate capture.

If you just use the camcorder's 30 fps capture and have the video editor slow the playback, when you get to about 15 fps (or 50% of the original speed) is when the video starts being a bit jerky...

Photron and Vision Research (and others) make high speed cameras that can do 300 fps, 1,000 fps and even 3,000 fps or higher - they are expensive.

What camcorder should I get for movies and commercials?
Q. Im looking for a camcorder that is professional, HD, SD card, and something that has longevity. I dont want to make an investment and something better comes out. Ive heard of the RED cameras but I cant afford that. Ive looked at some DSLR's. What do you recommend for movies and commercials?

A. Take a look at the Canon XF100. As far as I have seen, it is the only Pro-camcorder at it's price to get a 50 mbps data rate. Everything else under about $5000 is getting half of that, making them little better than a good consumer twinkie-cam.

At $3300, the XF is not much more expensive than a 5DM2 with a good lens.

How to interpret the zoom power indicators on a camcorder?

Q. I have a photography background with 35mm film and digital cameras. I am on the market to buy a camcorder and I would like to understand the "reach" of the zoom when it mentions things like "10X optical"? I can easily figure out the reach of, say, a 75-300mm lens in 35mm film cameras. How does the camcorder zoom labels compare to 35mm film camera zooms?

A. It is as simple as it seems.

10x zoom means that at 0% zoom or no zoom, the image is at the same size you can see with the naked eye from the same spot and vantage point as the camcorder, and at 100% zoom or maximum zoom, the same image is now ten times larger than its original size (and part of the image may now be so big it went our of frame or out of view).

If you are talking about focal distance or in your case "focal length", that is a different issue. Most built-in camcorder lenses can focus from macro to infinity. In most cases, you can find an adapter to adapt a 35mm camera lens onto the front of the built-in camcorder lens, and then, focal length and "reach" come into play because your camera lens is based on f-stops. Several professional camcorders (such as the Sony PMW-EX3) also allow the removal of the camcorder's lens and the placement of another lens including those from 35mm cameras to be installed instead for specialized filming situations.

How do you zoom on the camers of the samsung Glyde?
Q. i cant zoom on the camers but i can zoom on the camcorder. on the camcorder, the zoom icon thingy is just there. but on the camera, theres a circle with a slash goin through it. does that make sense?
thanks for all the help! i really need to ZOOM!

A. The camera doesn't allow you to zoom. It's stupid. But that is a piece of sh!t phone. I hate it.
