The New Droid X?! anyone have it yet?
Q. Ok, Today is my birthday and my phone upgrade is up so i decided im gonna go get a phone, and since the droid X is the newest on verizon i figure i would get it, but a few questions

-If i go to the store will i get it or will i have to wait for them to ship it?
-What apps do you use?
-How long does YOUR battery last
-What apps SHOULD i get?
-What Accessories do i need
----------------------------------------------
Price is no object

A. You should be able to get it at the store for 199 (with a two year contract) or 149 online.

I use the Skype application and the bar-code reader. I also downloaded the who-wants-to-be-a-millionaire game. But be careful Skype. You will lose minutes. I called my mother-in-law in Japan for 18 minutes and it was counted as a call to Atlanta. So Skype is only free in off-peek hours (after 9PM and on the weekends).

I have my phone set to wireless network access, satellite location, email updates, and all the bells-and-whistles. I've been playing with it a lot. My battery goes into the red-zone after about four hours. My old cell phone would hold a charge for about one week. But with a cool new device, you’re always interested in actually using it. And I’ve gotten really good (within a few days) at surfing the web. All those multimedia features drain the battery. I like the voice recognition feature. I can simply ask it a question and get an answer. Also, the keyboard can be a pain. But if you just talk, it’s usually pretty accurate and it’s easy to edit a mistake.

Another cool feature is the camcorder. The video is horrible in dimly lit conditions, but very good in daylight. And it’s really easy to transfer to your computer. There’s an HDMI cord that allows you to hook up the droid to your TV and play video. That’s cool too. It’s almost like having a pocket DVD player.

The only game I like is called "paper toss," where you try to throw a wrinkled up piece of paper into a a basket.

The most annoying feature is the screen lock and finger “swipe” requirement. When you’ve got the phone in your pocket and you get an incoming call, you have to play some fancy finger games to get it unlocked. It’s pretty much impossible when I’m driving or walking my German shepherd. I have to use both hands to get the phone unlocked and accept the incoming call. On my old flip phone, I simply opened the phone and the call was live. With the droid, I fill like I’m dealing with a mini-computer that someone decided to add a phone function too.

As for accessories, I got the case and the car mount. But it’s hard (slow) to pry the case off, so now I’m not really using the mount much. The HDMI cable is a must. You can forget the phone charging cradle. The only benefit to that is that it makes your droid look like an alarm clock. Otherwise, just go with the standard charging cable. Last, I think the cigarette lighter cable is a good idea, but you could save money by just buying a power converter at an auto parts store – or driving a newer car with the USB plug already there.

EDIT: I visited the Verizon store in Wenatchee and asked about the swipe requirement. There's an app called auto answer that enables your phone to automatically answer in speak mode and do so only for numbers you have starred in the address book. So when I go for a walk with the dog, I set it to auto answer for for wife. And that solved the problem. (The problem was it's hard to swipe with only one hand.)

I need a good camcorder for indoor filming.. (gymnastics)?

Q. I have been comparing camcorders online but can't figure out which will work best for me indoors.. they all talk about well lit situations. My daughter competes in Gymnastics and the competitions are settings similar to a school gym - where you are sitting at a good distance from your subject. I have noticed that the digital camcorders that I have been looking at do not have lights (tho I'm sure a light wouldn't help in my situation anyway). Have any of you found a camcorder that does well (or even OK) indoors where the subject is at least 50 feet away?

I appreciate any suggestions.

A. Consumer camcorders do not do well in low light because they have small lenses and small imaging chips. You are correct, a light will not help you - at 50 feet away, that is too far for the video light to be effective - they are designed to work withinn about 10 feet.

In order to get good video, you need a camcorder with big lenses and big imaging chips. This will put you in the "pro-sumer" range.

For standard definition, this would be the Canon GL2, Sony DCR-VX2100 and Panasonic DVX100.

For high definition (and standard definition) this puts you in the Sony HDR-FX1000, Canon XHA1... and they go higher from there.

what microphones should I use for film recording?

Q. Hi,
Me and a few friends are looking to create a pilot episode of our own Tv show, just for fun. We have already purchased our HD camcorders and tripods etc, but now we are looking for some clip of recording microphones so we can get perfect sound.
We basiclaly want a microphone which can clip on the shirt and records the persons voice, and then upload this and sync it into our video so everyone can be heard easily...
Any ideas of which ones to go for or prices??

Thanks guys

A. Lavaliere mics - decent ones - are not inexpensive. For that matter, any "decent" mic will not be inexpensive.

We don't know which camcorders you have so we don't know if they have a mic jack. But your post reads like your camcorders don't have a mic jack. That means you'll need some sort of field recorder - or if you have one, you did not tell us which you are using. If you don't have a field recorder, then look into those by Zoom (H2) or Edirol or M-Audio or Marantz or Tascam... there are others, too.

Because of the way you described the audio capture environment, the person wearing the mic can also wear the small field recorder. Most of the low-end field recorders have a 1/8" (3.5mm) stereo audio-in jack. Using a splitter, you can connect two mics... but lets stay with one for now.

Since the cable between the mic and the filed recorder would be short, you won't need to worry about the unshielded cable possibly picking up interference. For your needs, it is likely a low end, wired, "tie clip mic" will be good enough to plug into the field recorder.

Another method would be to plug the mic into your computer and record the audio. Audacity is a good audio manipulation software package.

You just need to learn which audio stream compression and method to use to sync up nicely with your video editor.

If you need more than one person's audio recorded and the cables don't work then you need to go wireless. The clip on mic connects with a wire to a body pack. The body pack connects wirelessly to a base station. The base station connects to the audio recording device (camcorder with audio-in jack, fiedl recorder, computer, etc.). I can't recommend any of the low-end units that use FM, or any of the shared frequencies (900 MHz, 2.4 GHz, 5.4 GHz). Because these frequencies are shared (wifi, garage door openers, home portable phones, microwave ovens, etc, they will pick up interference and ruin the captured audio. UHF is best - VHF is OK... these can get pricey very quickly.

The Sennheiser G3 systems I use start at about $600 for a lav mic, body pack, and portable base station. The big base stations that are not camera mounted will reduce the price a bit.

Another question about optical vs dynamic zoom in a camcorder?
Q. I know the difference between optical zoom and dynamic zoom in a camcorder. What I don't understand is a camera advertised as having 38X Optical/65X Dynamic Zoom. Does that mean I can choose between the two kinds of zoom techniques when I film? Could I mount the camcorder on a tripod and use both techniques for a total zoom of 38 x 65 = 2470 x magnification and use it to take telephoto pictures of Venus, Mars, and Jupiter? Thanks.

A. One, it's optical vs. *digital* zoom. Not "dynamic.

Two, no. The two zoom methods don't get applied serially. The "65x digital zoom" is with some digital zoom applied (a bit less than 2:1) after the lens is at its full 38x zoom.

What are good camcorders for video editing?

Q. I want an inexpensive (up to $500) camcorder that is good for video editing/movie making. I've heard Mini DV formats are good, but I kind find much out there. Are hard drive or flash memory any good?
Help. Thanks.

A. With Video Editing Software, you can create and share your own screen sensations with the world .

How can I make a student documentary?
Q. For school, we have to enter a contest called National History Day, in which you must create a project. I have decided that I am probably going to make a documentary. What would I need to do this. I think I could get a camera from the school, or if you know of any inexpensive digital camcorders, please tell me. Also, do you have reccomendations for any inexpensive movie-making software good for school documentaries. And lastly, what are some ways I can make the documentary look professional, and do well in the contest. Thank you very much!

A. well, to make a documentary requires

1) camera, try and borrow one.

2) there are free movie makign software on the net, but right now, i can't think of one right now. if you know somebody with a macintosh with the latest software, i think it has movie editing software on it.

3) to make it look professional, you gotta read some books on movie making, learn how to make the movie visually interesting, but not shocking, and exploitative. oh yeah, do not exploit anybody, or harass ppl, you have to learn about ethics in reporting.

4) and even before you consider putting to gether your documentary you have to first discover what you want to document, or interview. you have to put together a proposal on what you want to do, how you go about doing it, and what kind of research (library, living people, photos, etc.) to include in your documentary. you can just spontaneously go out and document something, because you'll only look foolish, and unprofessional.

5) very important: bias, if you are interviewing ppl, or gathering data, you have to ask questions that do not introduce personal bias/propaganda into the documentary. this is very difficult. if you want to win any kind of documentary contest, this is one skill you will have to learn and master.

Which Prosumer Camcorder to get?

Q. I'm saving up money for a decent prosumer/professional camcorder. I understand that the great quality ones are all well over $5,000.

But I've been looking at the Canon GL2 Mini DV and the Panasonic AG-DVC20 and want to know which ones better. I'm planning on making Indie Films and submitting them into Film Festivals.

Any other camcorder under $2000 that you recommend would be great too!
thanks in advance!

A. For under 2k you have plenty of other options that are much better than the two you mentioned.

For your price range, I would seriously look into buying a Panasonic DVX100 or Canon XL2. These are two of the best DV cameras out there. While some sites will make it seem like these cameras are out of your price range, there are plenty of legitimate places to find them used, in great condition with low usage. You can probably even find a new DVX for your price. I think even if you buy one used, you will be much happier with it than, say, a GL2. Those cameras have been on the market for ages and are no longer worth the retail price they're sold for.

If you need help finding the right deal, you can email me at SK3055@yahoo.com. And don't forget about leaving money in your equipment budget for sound!

What is the cheapest camcorder with slow motion capacity?
Q. I would like a camcorder for my birthday that has slow motion capacity. Under 300 dollars would be useful, but I know there aren't that many at that price. I want the best quality, however, for that price range. I don't want a camera with 5 fps, god no.

A. Recording at a slow frame rate won't provide you with very good slow motion playback. You want to record at a high frame rate...

For example, some Sony camcorders have a "SmoothSlowRecord" feature that allows fast frame rate capture (120 fps) for a 3 second burst. When played back at NTSC standard 30 fps, the playback takes 12 seconds (or 25% of the original speed). The Casio Exilim line has longer high frame rate capture.

If you just use the camcorder's 30 fps capture and have the video editor slow the playback, when you get to about 15 fps (or 50% of the original speed) is when the video starts being a bit jerky...

Photron and Vision Research (and others) make high speed cameras that can do 300 fps, 1,000 fps and even 3,000 fps or higher - they are expensive.

I am buying a Mac Mini to use iMovie and Final Cut Pro. What HD camcorder should i buy?

Q. 1. what ram is the least needed?
2. my budget for the HD camcorder is below 700 dollars.

A. Setting the expectation:

The MacMini is an ENTRY LEVEL computer. High definition video is ADVANCED video. FinalCutPro is ADVANCED video.

Will it work? Yes. But no fair claiming "slow response" after you do this. 4 gig would be better (and max out the MacMini). An iMac has a faster CPU and can do more RAM.

You should also have an external drive (500 gig minimum) for the FinalCut video project files. HDV format video uses about 44 gig of computer hard drive space per hour of inported HDV video and you do not want to slow things further because the project files access is fighting with the operating system's trying to get to virtual memory (on the hard drive that the start-up operating system is on).

You need to buy a 4-pin to 6-pin firewire cable to connect the camcorder's DV port to the computer's firewire port. A Firewire cable is not included in the box with the camcorder.

How long could you video on camcorder that has 64mb and also for 8gb?

Q. Wanting to buy camcorder. Need something to video for awhile. Not like really long.

A. http://www.walmart.com/JVC-Everio-GZ-MG230-Camcorder-2GB-mircoSD/ip/10878773

it may be a bit pricy but for the camcorder, its certainly worth it and be a wise investment for you.

it takes still pictures, 34x zooming capability (you can zoom in an object even half a mile away and still get clear pictures) ... takes hours of videos which can be adjusted to regular or wide screens, nice color reproductions. and the best thing about it is ... it has a 30GB internal memory which can take thousands of pictures and hours of videos.

so no more packing extra dvds or tapes for backup .. its all in there. aside from the small compact handy design, i've never had any problems with it working with my computer.

and for you question .. 64mb ... a normal movie is about 700 mb (2hours), so you can probably have about 10 movies on an 8GB one. but just imagine, how many hours on a 30GB memory like this one i'm talking about.

So there you have it ... and good luck with your buy, even if its not this one. and hope it will serve you good.

What is the difference between purchasing a camcorder with night shot plus vs one with a built in light?
Q. I attend a lot of candlelight parties so I'm looking to purchase a camcorder that can record in very low light.

A. There are different terms...

In the Sony world, the "nightshot" feature is a built-in infrared emitter which lets you take video in total darkness (or VERY low light), but the video is monochromatic - typically green/white not black/white. I find them to be useful (but grainey) up to about 8-10 feet away, but people's and animal's eyes look very odd.

Using a regular video light (whether built-in or added on) uses normal visible light. Typically, the built-in or less expensive add-ons are not very bright so for them to be useful you need to be really close (3-5 feet) to whatever you are capturing to video.

For a camera to capture well in low light, it needs to have a BIG lens and a BIG imaging chip system. A camcorder with a single BIG CMOS or CCD will out perform a camera with 3 small CCDs. I am not aware of any camcorders less than $1,000 with 3 CMOS chips.

Camcorders in the less than $700 range will be able to pick up the candlelight easily because the flame is bright, but people images lit by the candlelight will be very grainy, unless they are a foot or closer to the candle - which would be dangerous and not recommended.

What is a good small HD camcorder with a built in light?

Q. I am looking for an inexpensive high def (720p is okay) hard drive camcorder with a built in light for low light situations. I already have a nice Sony 1080p camcorder, but I would like a less expensive simple camcorder for more every day type of events. I have heard good things about Flip but none of theirs have a light.

Are there any with a light? Any suggestions?

A. JVC

In a Camcorder, what exactally does a Megapixle refer to?
Q. I have been working with my 4.0 MP Sony camcorder for a while, but I never understood what exactly is a Megapixel refers to. Is it the number of pixels in a frame? Does it affect the resolution in any way? (My camcorder is a 1080P camcorder) What about quality does it affect?

A. There is an imaging chip in the camera. The imaging chip is made of silicon (among other things). On the imaging chip are pixels. One pixel is the smallest "controllable" point on the imaging chip and basically is that starting point of where the image through the lens is turned into digital information (basically a series of zeroes and ones that indicate whether a pixel should be on or off.

A megapixel is 1 million pixels. Your 4 megapixel camera has 4 million pixels. This is how still image resolution is measured. Other items are used to determine quality - including the amount and type of data compression used.

Video is measured differently. Horizontal row count is the primary method to determine video resolution. The common horizontal row counts are 480 for standard definition, 720 and 1080 for high definition. The amount and type of compression play a huge role.

In either case, lots of data compression means discarding the data and reducing the quality of the image. But there is a benefit to smaller file sizes.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pixel
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Megapixel#Megapixel

Because video standards are different from still image standards, the imaging chip is used differently. An increase in (still image) megapixel count does not translate into an increase in video resolution.

As previously indicated, the common horizontal line counts for video are 480, 720 and 1080. Because of the way video is required to display, using aspect ratio and needing to be used on televisions and over various broadcast methods, the vertical columns can be used to arrive at the "pixel count".

640x480=307,200 (or about 1/3 megapixel)
1280x720=921,600 (or almost a megapixel)
1920x1080=2,073,600 (or about 2 megapixels)

There are lots more video standard sizes, but they are more computer monitor related rather than broadcast TV related.

So yes, the megapixels are whats on the chip which makes up the pixel count in the digital still image.

Looking for hard drive camcorder with audio in?

Q. I want to purchase a hard drive based digital camcorder with an audio in to attach an external microphone. Budget is around 400 dollars, any ideas?

A. For $400? does not exist... also, be aware that if you want to record loud audio, you will need manual audio controls... without it, the audio ato-gain circuit will still get overloaded making the audio sound bad - even if you have the best mic available.

The least expensive camcorders with manual audio control and a mic in jack are the Canon HV20, HV30, Sony HDR-HC7 and HC9. They are miniDV tape based camcorders.

The Sony HDR-SR11 and SR12 have a "Low" mic gain setting made for loud environments - but they are way outside your budget.

Looking for camcorder with audio video input, and time lapse recording. Does it exist?
Q. I'm looking for a camcorder that has audio video input for a lipstick or bullet camera, and also perform time lapse recording. I have searched the internet for days looking for an HD camcorder that has these features. The results are overwhelming. Anyone have any suggestions?

A. I looked across Canon's HD camcorder line and can say they do not and chances are slim other makers do.

In the Pro line, starting with the GL-2 there are inputs for audio and Video and the few remaining MiniDv camcorders usually have these inputs. I even have an old Z300 I use as the recorder for a waterproof board camera I built several years ago.

I believe you will get better results, for less money, if you look for a mini DVR. These are often used as wired remote recorders for helmet-cams and are also used in security. About the size and weight as a pack of cigarettes, they may even be able to record a full HD frame. They run about $200 - 300 without a monitor and $300-600 with a built in monitor.

http://www.supercircuits.com/search?keywords=Micro+DVR

I am not aware of any bullet cams better than 720 X 480 which is SD and records very well on a MiniDv camera. So consider that route as well.

Time lapse is also more available in the MiniDv pro cameras. I did not see interval recording available on any HD camcorder. This may be problematic with the compression used in HD recording. Interval recording pretty much demands uncompressed video, again, like the MiniDv recorders.

So, without even trying, you have discovered a couple reasons in addition to image quality, why the so called highly compressed, H.264 HD cameras are a step backwards from uncompressed MiniDv.

Whats the best cheap yet good camcorder to use for Youtube???

Q. Hi i'm starting to make a lot of YouTube videos and it's been alright for like the first year but now I wanna take it to the next level with my camera quality. Right now i've been using my webcam because my IPhone camera broke and so I needed to use something for my YouTube videos. I think I saved up enough to get me a okay camera but it can't be in like the hundreds...I just need something that is good enough to entertain my YouTubers. I want something that has HD quality and has a mic included into it. I want probably a handycam for it and if you can please have a camcorder that is in like Best Buy or Walmart. That would really help. My time is limited so please help me as soon as possible. Thank you so much for your time. ~Sanyika~

A. Most digital cameras take video and a camera like the Fujii finepix would be great for youtube videos , it records in HD and also takes some great stills and the older models from last year and the 2013 models will be sold on black Friday for good prices probably , maybe in the $150 range which is a bargain

If you don't want to wait until then best buy has some good deals on sony , jvc and canon camcorders now , some are nearly half price . check their website and sort by price .

How much waste would an independent accounting agent find if they audited the government?
Q. We keep hearing about debt ceilings, deficits, sequesters, budget cuts, and we're constantly being threatened with shorter school days and fewer public services like cops and firefighters if we don't vote to support higher taxes. But I wonder how many BILLIONS in waste we would fine if we were to hire the best accounting company in the country to audit the federal government? How much ridiculous WASTE do you think they would find?

Here are just a few examples:

* Washington spends $25 billion annually maintaining unused or vacant federal properties.

* Government auditors spent the past five years examining all federal programs and found that 22 percent of them — costing taxpayers a total of $123 billion annually — fail to show any positive impact on the populations they serve!

* A GAO audit classified nearly half of all purchases on government credit cards as improper, fraudulent, or embezzled. Examples of taxpayer-funded purchases include gambling, mortgage payments, liquor, lingerie, iPods, Xboxes, jewelry, Internet dating services, and Hawaiian vacations.

* Federal agencies are delinquent on nearly 20 percent of employee travel charge cards, costing taxpayers hundreds of millions of dollars annually.

* The federal government owns more than 50,000 vacant homes.

* Members of Congress have spent hundreds of thousands of taxpayer dollars supplying their offices with popcorn machines, plasma televisions, DVD equipment, ionic air fresheners, camcorders, and signature machines — plus $24,730 leasing a Lexus, $1,434 on a digital camera, and $84,000 on personalized calendars.

A. I would guess around 30% of budget

Whats the best camcorder for me to buy?

Q. I need it to be under 400 dollars, have good picture quality, microphones need to be able to work with it and compatibility with imovie on my mac.

A. If you can't stand Mini DV tape, the JVC MG255 gives *decent* video quality with the HDD convenience, and it should work with little trouble in iMovie HD from the iLife 2006 suite. If you have iMovie 08, I can't comment on that. I have a JVC MG555 and it works fine with iMovie HD (06), but I have to delete the first frame of each clip, as there is some overlay ghosting effect (deleting the first frame for about 20 clips takes less than a minute for me).

If you can handle Mini DV tapes, then you have lots of better options. Check out the Canon ZR line for cheap cams with mic input (some of them have it), but I warn you, I bought one and absolutely hated the horrible tape motor noise that I couldn't get rid of (the one I bought had no mic input; I was stupid back then).

Honestly, you aren't going to get "great" video quality for under $400, but because I'm not sure what you mean by "good" I can't guarantee what you'll like. The kind of camcorder that has a mic input is the kind that starts to merge itself into the higher price range.

I recommend you to look at the Canon Elura 100, which won an award on the below-listed site, and has a mic-in. It's cheap too, at under $400.

What is the best camera for shooting video? *READ DESCRIPTION*?
Q. I am looking for a camera to film YouTube movie reviews and short films. I want it to shoot in 1080p and have good sound capabilities. Also I would like it to be affordable preferably under 400 dollars. Something durable that won't break if it is dropped. I am currently looking at some Nikon Coolpix Cameras are they any good? PLEASE HELP

A. The Nikon Coolpix cameras were designed to capture still images. They do that well. Capturing video is a "convenience feature". The video is ok - but audio is not implemented well. No manual audio control; no mic jack.

Something durable? There are not many "ruggedized" cameras or camcorders out there - the closest may be helmet cams.

I think you need to make a choice - either good video and audio or durability - there's nothing that does both. For a camcorder, something in the Canon HF M series. For a helmet cam, either the GoPro or Contour HD. If you go the helmet cam route, then use an external audio capture device like a Zoom H2... When you edit the video, import the audio, synch and mute the audio that was captured by the helmet cam...

How can I get my camcorder to work on my macbook pro?

Q. Sony DCR-TRV27 mini DV Camcorder...I'm using OS X and hoping to get my camera to function on my mac. I'd like to transfer recorded footage on mini-dv to digital format on my computer.

A. Turn off the camcorder.

Use a 4-pin to 9-pin firewire cable to connect the camcorder's DV port to the MacBook Pro's firewire port.

Turn on the camcorder - put it in "Play/Edit" mode.

Rewind the tape using the camcorder's controls.

Launch the video editor. iMovie is bundled - Final Cut is way better.

Under file, select import or capture...

How do I go about transferring video footage to dvd?
Q. I have a dv camcorder and a dvd recorder. I need help on how to transfer my video to dvd.

A. You'll need to capture the clips into a editor program (iMovie, Windows Movie Maker)

Then make any edits you need, then drag all the clips in to the time line and export to ether Avi or Quicktime ( using DV compression, under options)

Make sure you keep the footage interlaced and 4:3 ( or 16:9 for widescreen)

Then just import the DV Avi's (or Quicktime's) into your DVD software, set u your menus, then burn.

Is it possible to stream video over the web with a camcorder using its mini-hdmi out?

Q. I stream video using an older (tape) camera with firewire. I want to upgrade to an HD camera (Flash memory), problem is none of them are firewire capable. However some do have HDMI and Mini-HDMI out ports. My question is can I use these ports to stream live video over the internet the same as I do with the firewire?

A. HDMI is neither a computer file or organized as packets. it is not compressed, any connection will require at least a 2 gbps connection on the internet backbone. firewire is too slow, only 100 mbps max, and it is serial protocol, not packet. video streaming on the internet is why MPEG4 was invented . use it.

How do I set my camcorder up for video chats with skype?
Q. I have recently bought a Panasonic HDC-SD80 camcorder, and am looking to video call with friends that moved to Australia, but I can't seem to get it working, does anyone know how to get it working?

A. There is no instruction in the manual for "video streaming", "web cam", "web video chat". http://panasonic.net/avc/camcorder/hd/80_series/
So, it is not so much that it is not working - it was not designed to do what you want to do. It is a camcorder - not a webcam.

what kind of affordable camcorder should i use to create a documentary that i can edit on my computer?

Q. i am looking to create a documentary about the metal music scene in illinois and i need to know what kind of camcorder under 500 dollars i should use. what ever kind it is i need to be able to edit the footage on my computer. i would also be willing to rent a much more pro camera but i cant find prices anywhere.

A. First of all, you don't have to use the video card to input the video from your camcorder to your PC. Use a firewire or USB 2.0

As for renting, may or may not work for you. I can't imagine shooting a documentary like this in three days. If those prices IMO, it would be cheaper for you to buy a 3CCD camcorder, it would save you money in the long run and you can get a decent one in the $500 price range.

I might reccomend the Panasonic PVGS300 or PVGS250. The current model, (PVGS300), you might be able to find for under $500 bucks. In what I've read, the 300 does not have a mic input which may be a deterent for you. Also, check and see how it does in low light, if you're going to be filiming concert footage, this may be a concern as well.

Anyway, here's a review of the 300:

Good Luck

Which digital camcorder would you recommend?
Q. I've got a new baby coming in December and want a nice digital camcorder. Preferably something under 500 dollars. Which one would you recommend??

A. Consumer reports says these are good camcorders: Keep in mind that using the same model number but paying a little more for the upper of the models usually works just great. So like instead of the Pansonic PV-GS80, I got the PV-GS85 because it had a few more specs on it. Only cost $277 at circuitcity.

For MiniDV

• Panasonic PV-GS80
• Sony DCR-HC28
• Canon ZR800

MiniDVD

• Hitachi DZ-GX5020A
• Canon DC230

Hard Drive

• Panasonic SDR-H18

Hybrid

• Hitachi DZ-HS300A

What is a really good camera that is good for taking videos on Youtube but isnt too expensive?

Q. What is a really good camera that is good for taking videos on Youtube but isnt too expensive?
I want the Nikon J1 or Canon Rebel t3i, but unless i can get 500-800 dollars( ideas???) i need ideas for camera that are not as nice but still have good quality and under or 300 dollars! Thank you and i know its not that easy but i will do anything! Also camcorders work too!

A. Sony HD bloggie is the best if u want people to watch ur videos

IM Going ti get 1 but for now im samsung galaxy tab 7.7

Need a good video camera for 800 dollars?
Q. I need a good video camera for around 800 dollars. and i dont want like a handycam thing, i want a nice solid camera with good video, and audio quality . Any suggestions?

A. Canon HV30 all the way! It's $780, so you'd be under the budget. It's an HD camcorder that records to cheap and convenient miniDV cassettes...and don't let anyone fool you: HDV is a lot better than HDD (hard drive) or DVD based camcorder for the following reasons:
1) better compatibility w/ more editing programs=easier to edit
2) easier to store and archive footage
3) better quality because of less compression

HV30

pros: excellent HD quality picture, amazing color saturation, truly instant autofocus, it also has a 24p mode (to make video look like film, which is good), and a mini-stereo input for external microphones

the mic input is HUGELY important for good audio, considering that NO camera has a decent on-board mic; you really nee to purchase an additional one....I recommend the RODE VideoMic shotgun microphone.

cons: poor manual controls--it's better as a point-and-shoot camera, HD footage is harder to edit, and requires a lot of hard drive space

but considering it's sooo good in automatic mode, it's lack of manual controls isn't too much of a problem....unless you are a manual control freak like me. But even so, you won't find a decent camera with decent manual controls under $2,000, so that's nothing to worry about.
As for media management, that's a problem on all HD cameras; they are a bit harder to edit.

Of course, if you're not totally convinced, there's always the Sony HDR-HC9 (or HC3), but I believe they a bit more expensive...besides they're Sonys :P

Well, I hope that helps....so good luck mitchellg103!

what is the best Sony Handycam HD camcorder for a independent movie?

Q. I am wanting to make me a low budget independent movie. I need to know what is the best Hand held camcorder i can use. I know Sony has great HD Handy cams. So what is the best of them. If anyone can tell me the best Camcorder there is to shoot a good low budget movie. It has to be able to shoot at night with no problem and is just the perfect camcorder to use.

A. I basically agree with Palladin, but since you did not tell us your budget, I'd say the HDR-FX1000 is a good way to go. It (or HDR-FX1) was used for the original "Paranormal Activity".

"Handycam" is Sony's generic name for all their consumer camcorders - including their prosumers. And please use a tripod or other steadying device. You can add in the shake later when you edit. Be sure to plan for your audio acquisition, too.

What are the differences between a camcorder and a professional video camera?
Q. Are there huge differences in the video quality you can get from a HD consumer camcorder and a little "professional" cameras...the type videographers and local news stations use on location. What are the other main differences in capability?

A. Consumer camcorders have small lenses and small imaging chip(s). This combination results in their not doing too well in low-light situations. Prosumer and pro-grade camcorders have much larger lenses and larger imaging chips.

Consumer camcorders' manual controls are generally not easily accessible. Prosumer and pro-grade camcorders have easily accessible manual zoom, manual focus, manual iris/exposure, manual shutter and manual audio controls... and neutral density filters and video gain control.

Many consumer camcorders generally do not have any mic jack or other audio-in capability other than the built-in mics. A few have a 1/8" (3.5mm) stereo mic jack (but generally no manual audio control). Prosumer models generally have a 1/8" (3.5mm) stereo mic jack with manual audio control. Pro-grade camcorders have built-in XLR audio connectors.

Consumer camcorders are generally built to be used hand-held, even though no one should ever do that. Prosumer models are larger - and while designed to be hand held, rarely are; the large ENG (Electronic News Gathering) pro models are nearly always shoulder mountable. The advantage of the shoulder mount translates into a much steadier shot - though a tripod or camera crane or other steadying device would be steadier than shoulder mount.

Other features like frame rate, interlaced vs progressive frame capture, add-on lens selection and quality, LANC (a wired remote) jack availability, matte box availability, filter selection, will also come into play.

You will also find that the vast majority of the pro camcorders use miniDV tape or save to an external hard drive that stores in DV or HDV format (same as miniDV tape). Panasonic has a few new internal hard drive or flash memory pro-grade camcorders. Red has a family of them. Sony, Canon and JVC pro lines continue to be on the DV/HDV page.

In good daylight, tripod mounted, no movement of the subject or the camera, with normal audio levels, it would be a challenge to differentiate 1080i/p 30fps video. Deviate from this, and the differences get very obvious, very quickly. Video is captured under lots of different lighting conditions, there may not be time to set up a tripod, and audio levels can be from 0 to REALLY LOUD in an instant... and the reason we capture video is for the motion...

Under many conditions, the ENG camcorder audio is not even used even though it is captured - an external field recorder (Edirol, Zoom, Marantz, M-Audio, Fostex) is used to capture the audio you end up hearing on TV and a separate audio person is employed just to be sure the audio is correctly captured.

So yes, there are huge differences - which is why a low-end consumer camcorder costs less than $300 and a decent pro camcorder can be as low as $3,000 or as high as $60,000...

But a skilled person with a low-end camcorder will always capture much better video than a non-skilled person with the most expensive camcorder...

What "affordable" camcorders are compatible & work best with iMovie '11 & standard Macbooks?

Q. I want to know what current camcorders that are affordable work well with iMovie 2011. A camcorder where you don't have to download any streaming or video convertor programs.

A. Good zoom works very well for a day approaches and bright places Soledad excellent, but for low light if you need some accessories to give greater illumination to the area of ''shooting. Very light which allows for smooth loading and the quality of video and pass video to the computer is simple and makes working with the format and work with iMovie iFrame makes it very simple.

What smartphone should I get? (AT&T)?

Q. I have an upgrade in a few months and I wanted to get a smartphone. I want to see which one would be right for me. I make calls , text, social network, no email , some games and apps , music , photos, videos, decent battery. Thank you

A. I have a few that I would recommend and they have great price tags:

Motorola DROID II Android Phone (Verizon Wireless)
1 GHz TI OMAP processor
3.7-inch touchscreen display (854 x 480 pixels, 16 million color depth)
5-megapixel camera/camcorder with auto focus, touch-to-focus, face detection, panoramic modes, and more
Bluetooth connectivity (version 2.1)
8 GB internal memory
Included 8 GB microSD card with support for optional cards up to 32 GB.

droid from verizonn ...?
Q. does anyone have a droid from verizon.. if so what type? and do you like it? and do u like it better then the others.. why?

A. Droid X has the largest screen currently available, 4.3". Droid 2 has a physical keyboard. Your personal preference should determine which is right for you.

Droid X has an 8 Mg Pixel camera and HD camcorder. The apps available in the Android Market are abundant and available to all android phones.

The main thing I like about my Droid X is the display size. I download and watch TV shows and movies, listening with Bluetooth headphones. The display makes surfing the net a breeze, something I didn't think was practical on iphones with their smaller displays.

I tend to use my phone for email and multimedia more than phone calls, but have yet to have a single call dropped.

How to combine camcorder video clips into one file?

Q. I just bought a Sony Bloggie camcorder. New clips are made every time you turn the record button on. When I transfer them to my PC, I want to know if there is a way to combine these short, 30 - 45 second, clips into a larger file - "one that tells the whole story " say in 3-4 minutes. The manual you can download is all but useless and on importing files to the PC it tells you to follow the software instructions of which there are none. Very frustrating.

A. You need a video editing program (NLE) to put them all back together. On your PC, if it is a Windows machine, Windows Movie Maker should be on your computer. The down side to this is, if your camcorder shoots in HD, you will need to convert your files so they can be used with WMM. By doing that conversion, you loose any HD qualities your video had.

For about $79 to $129 CDN, they sell, better than WMM, NLEs that can handle HD footage right from a HD camcorder, no file conversion necessary.

I do not use, have no interest and never will, but I am also supplying you with a link to a review of several online free video editing sites. http://www.videomaker.com/article/14923

What is the best camcorder to record a basic training graduation?
Q. My mom wants to purchase a new camcorder to use at my basic training graduation for the Air Force. I am ashamed to admit, I dont know a thing about camcorders. I did some researched and talked to a few people who recently purchased a camcorder and I'm still very fuzzy. Does anyone have any suggestions? Specific brand and model? Maybe, a general rule of thumb or ruleS of thumb for purchasing a GOOD quality camcorder.

A. Read alot before you get to the store; and for a camcorder do not buy the Extended warranty no matter how good the salesman is.

Really check out Sony and Hitachi on line. they were the best when I got mine 3 years ago

Can you dub a disc from a Hard Drive or Flash Card Camcorder?

Q. I need to recommend a new camera for my coach to use. He likes to dub the video from the camera to a DVD. I'm pretty sure he does this by hooking up the camera to the TV or DVD recorder and then playing back the video. Our current camera uses mini discs. Can a camera that uses a Hard Drive or Flash Cards do the same thing? And if so, what kind of ports does it need?

A. Hi Ronald:

The short answer to your Question is "yes": HDD and Flash Card video files can be copied to DVD for review & archiving.

The downside is that most consumer HDD and SD Card storage camcorders use high-compression of the video information (to save space), so individual frame detail is lost in the process. And for fast pans (following a football) and quick-action footage, compressed-video can have annoying "motion artifacts" where the frame-to-frame detail is "interpolated" (mathematically guessed-at).

These 2 types of camcorders typically use USB ports to connect to a computer for transfer & editing. MiniDV tape-based camcorders use lower-compression (more frame & pixel detail is stored), but transfers have to be in "real-time", so a 2-hour game takes 2-hours to transfer. MiniDV camcorders require a FireWire port on the computer or DVD recorder. Digital video files (from HDD and cards) can be just "dragged & dropped" to copy. The files are huge, so it still takes some time (especially over USB), but it's quicker than tape transfer.

I shoot a lot of "sports combine" review videos (like on Yahoo!Sports' Rivals.com), as well as live game action; and coaches & scouts almost exclusively want MiniDV-based footage because of the motion capture quality.

There are pro-level and "prosumer" (semi-pro) cameras & camcorders that use high-speed CF-cards and/or FireWire based external hard drives (FireWire is faster than USB) as well as tape storage. These typically run (new) in the $1500-$3000+ price range, but are ruggedly built (Sony HVR-Z1 thru Z7 series are a good example).

Having the option of "solid state" memory or HDD external storage gives you the speed of quick file transfers & editing for review. The TV pros call this "DTE" for Direct-To-Edit workflow.

If your coach has a lower budget (his mini-DVD camcorder was originally around $1000 or less, like the $1100 Sony HCR-DVD300), he'll need to make a compromise between frame-detail (especially when reviewing in slo-mo or still-frame) and price. Features to shop for include variable shutter-speed, Slo-Mo "burst" record mode (for things like gymnastics or golf-swings), and pre-record mode (actually captures the video just-before you hit Record, so you get all the action).

Feel free to update your Question with exactly what sport or sports your coach deals with, which can make a difference in feature choices, and what his price range is (which makes a big difference in model selection).

hope this helps,
--Dennis C.

How many megapixels do i need on a digital video camera for a DVD movie without flaws showing through?
Q. Please help me fast! I'm shopping for one!

A. Uhm... I didn't see anything about resolution or megapixels on the Digital Camcorders I looked at, so probably any MiniDV camecorder will be just fine. You'll get what you pay for so stick to name brands and don't go too cheap... last years models of top brands are often a good place to go. You can find articles and reviews on them plus they are on close out so you can save some cash. Of course if you are intent on converting to DVD you might consider one of the models that writes directly to that format, but I don't know as much about them and they don't appear to be as popular. It may not be formatted for your every day DVD player either by default.

Now, if you meant digital camera with movie recording capabilities, well, good luck my friend. As far as I know the highest resolution any such camera records video in is 640 x 480 @ 30 fps. progressive. This is close to achieving modern DVD standards, but HD-DVD, Blue-Ray, and 1080p/i are on the way which will dramatically increase the amount of information necessary to produce such a large image. My suggestion would be not to ignore this requirement of yours but to focus more on features as it's unlikely you'll be making a collection of dozens of DVD movies anyway.

My personal favorite in the camera that doubles as a camcorder is the Canon Digital Elph series. I just broke mine and may replace it with a SD600 or SD630. The SD700IS (I believe that is the right model) is kind of cool as it will auto-crop your images to widescreen 16 x 9, but really it's just a macro that is costing you resolution, so no big deal.

To conclude on this category, video on the camera has nothing to do with the number of megapixels. A 1 MP camera could probably do 640 x 480 @ 30 fps just fine. The resolution really only kicks in on the pictures. The memory and speed required to record larger resolutions in the megapixel range would be extraordinary. Effectively your camera would be taking 30 Megapixel photos per second which is impossible as they have trouble taking them within a second of each other without over-running the buffer.

Anyway, read the reference source which should provide you most of the information you need. Wikipedia is awesome... shop at newegg and local shops.

Before I go, another nice thing about the canons that doesn't appeal to everybody is that they will take 320 resolution clips at 60 fps for capturing sports action. This is excelent for analyzing things like golf swings and the like, plus it's very affordable as such a tool. I personally use it to analyze foosball shots that are practically unseeable by the naked eye.

Good luck!

What is the best camcorder for under $200, and what's the reason for such a price difference?

Q. I am looking for a camcorder that I can use for family functions. I don't need it to do anything fancy, and I don't want to spend an arm and a leg. I don't really understand the differences in most of these, and see some for under a hundred dollars, and some costing over four hundred. But I don't understand the difference! Any help would be appreciated...

A. A basic MiniDV camcorder should do the job just fine. Like a Canon ZR800 (or ZR500 if there's any still on the shelves). MiniDV is cheaper than either DVD or hard drive recorders, and has several advantages over those formats: the tapes are reusable, you can buy more if you run out while on vacation, and they record in the DV format which can be accurately edited frame-by-frame.

Some camcorders have 3 CCD sensors instead of one; that costs more, and should give a higher quality picture. Some camcorders may have better light sensitivity, which would pay off in better performance indoors or at night.

Now that HDTVs are becoming common, I think standard-definition camcorders are becoming obsolete, so I wouldn't spend any more money on one than you absolutely need to. There's some decent HD camcorders that record to MiniDV starting at around $800 (Canon HV20).

What is the best camcorder/camera for low light situations?
Q. I plan on doing some YouTube videos in the future, but the problem is that my room is kinda dark, and my cellphone is terrible when it comes to dark areas. Are there any cameras for $200 or under for low light situations?
If not in my price range, anything not too expensive is fine.

A. Your question #1: What is the best camcorder/camera for low light situations?
Response: Any camcorder with a large lens diameter (to let light in to the camcorder/camera) and large imaging chip (to process what little light comes in through the lens when it is dark.

Your question #2: "Are there any cameras for $200 or under for low light situations?"
Response: No.

"not too expensive" means different things to different people.

Consumer grade camcorders start at the low end with small (less than 30mm) diameter lenses and small (less than 1/6") single imaging chip. As the price goes up, the lens diameters and imaging chips get larger. At around $400, the lens diameter is around 37mm and the imaging chips can get as large as 1/4". At around $800 the lens diameter is around 43mm and the imaging chips approach 1/3". At around $1,200 the lens diameter is around 58mm and the imaging chips are around 1/3". As you continue up the price spectrum to high-end consumer (sometimes called "prosumer") camcorders, $3,000 finds 72mm lens diameter with 3CCD or 3CMOS 1/3" imaging chip arrays - these do quite well under low-light conditions.

So... what can you do if you can't afford a camcorder/camera that can behave well under low light conditions? It depends what you are capturing to video, but one relatively easy way (assuming you will be editing the video with a half decent editor) is to add LOTS of light so your room is no longer dark - then, using your editor, make it look dark... This is call shooting "day for night".
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4MaC44MU4iw

When you go this route, use whatever camera/camcorder you want - and make the investment in lighting and a decent video editor - not a camera/camcorder. For $200, assuming your computer has a fast CPU, 4 gig RAM or more and lots of hard drive space - Sony Vegas is affordable and a couple or three worklights from the hardware store like
http://www.amazon.com/Voltec-08-00210-500-Watt-Portable-Worklight/dp/B004ZMUHBG
would be plenty.

How do I connect my camcorder to my computer?

Q. I have a Panasonic PV-GS320 camcorder and a Mac computer. When I connect the camcorder to the computer with the cord, nothing happens. I tried turning it on, but it's dead without the battery and the plug is behind the battery, so the battery has to come out in order for me to plug the cord into the camera. And no, I can't just read the instructions because my idiot brother decided to use it as a fire starter -_-

How can I get night vision/mode on my camcorder?

Q. I have a JVC- Everio, and I can't seem to find the "night mode" on it, even though the guide says it has it. How do I activate it?

A. unfortunately most camcorders either come with it or don't if yours does not have it then your out of luck also most night vision for camcorders suck your better off buying some lighting equipment to film at night.

Does a camcorder have to be 0 lux to pick up infrared light?
Q. I want to be able to shoot in complete or near complete darkness. The camcorder I'm looking to buy is 1.7 lux with it's night time mode. I was wondering if I got an infrared light to go with it, if it would pick it up or if it has to be a 0 lux camera for that to be possible?

A. IR has little to do woth lux - it has to be sensitive to infrared light - period.

How do i effectively film myself singing and playing the guitar while maintaining sound quality?

Q. I have a camera/camcorder, a microphone, an amplifier, and an acoustic guitar.
I want to create a youtube video of me playing and singing but the sound quality is horrific if i just film it straight off the camera/camcorder.
I'm not expecting great things, as i dont have expensive equipment and dont plan on getting any, but the tinny/echoing guitar sound is unbearable.

A. Something I would suggest is maybe getting a desk mic stand that will be able to hold the mic close to your mouth, but will be able to still hear the guitar. The ideal way to record the guitar and have your voice over it is to do them separately. You can use a recording program like Pro Tools, Studio One, or even Garageband to at first record just the guitar, and after sing along with the guitar track while recording your voice. This is what I always do.

Why does the Nintendo 3DS camcorder have poor sound quality?
Q. I've been wanting to know this for so long. The videos I record on my 3DS have poor sound quality. It's the same for my little sister's 3DS too. Why? On my iPod touch there is better picture and sound quality.

A. because your trying to record sound/video with a handheld gaming platform. its like trying to get decent quality video with a nokia 5 years ago.

besides, its a 3ds, please tell me how you enjoy your 4 fps max framerate when you turn on 3d mode.

What the heck does this red camcorder image sign mean in the Canon Li-ion?

Q. I have to finish this assignment due on September 9, and im having these annoying problems with my camcorder which is a Canon Li-ion. its really old, but it works. so I have to make a movie trailer. in this camcorder, you have the option to make a video on a tape, or on an SD card. I was planning to make my video on tape because number 1, its faster and not lagging, and number 2 it has better quality. but then the connecters I have (to connect the camcorder to my laptop for editing) don't work for some reason. so I have to use the SD card. I put a new SD card in, and tried recording. but everytime I press the start button, this weird red little camcorder image starts flashing on the lower left corner of the screen. my camcorder was fully charged, and it starts recording when its in tape mode. so I do not know what that red camcorder sign means. can you guys help me?

A. You need the exact model number of the camcorder. "Li-ion" is not that, it is the type of battery the camcorder uses.

Then go to canonusa.com . With the model number, you should be able to find the manual.

If not, do a web search for

Canon modelnumber manual

replacing "modelnumber" with the exact model number.

Download the manual.

Read the manual. It will tell you what the blinking red icon means.

How do I turn off the sleep mode on my camcorder?

Q. I try to record, but it goes to sleep mode. It's a Sanyo Xacti camcorder and I need to know how to turn the sleep mode off if I can. Please note that I keep it laying down, so I'm not touching it or moving it at all.

A. The reason the camcorder goes to sleep is to conserve battery power when it is not in use. When you lay the camcorder down and not touching it or moving it, the camcorder is not being used. Assuming you read the manual and there is an option to turn sleep mode off (or at least extend it), then you don't get to complain later about short battery life. When the camcorder is in use and on battery power - recording or playing video - the camcorder won't go to sleep (but will use battery power).

What video editing software do you use?
Q. I have a Xacti Camcorder and I want to do some editing on my videos, so I want to know from some people who have experience in this. I'd prefer an editing software compatible with PCs, preferably free and download-able online. Thanks.

A. You can try one of the following software:
Free Video Editer:
Windows Movie Maker (for windows) http://download.live.com/moviemaker/
iMovie (for mac) http://www.apple.com/ilife/imovie/

Professional Video Editer:

What is a high quality, but affordable camcorder?

Q. I'm looking for a really good camcorder, but I only have a 150 dollar budget. Is there a good camcorder within that price? I know that isn't a lot when it comes to camcorders, but I just want the video to have pretty good quality, and some good sound to it too.

A. Sony HDR-CX190 High Definition Handycam 5.3 MP Camcorder with 25x Optical Zoom (2012 Model) has been a great HD camcorder so far. It is very small and lightweight, to say the least. I think the 70 series battery I bought for this unit weighs almost as much as the camera. The controls are good with the little screen joystick and menus. The color is very good on the screen, and the video is sharp. I like the 30x for videoing my stepsons' wrestling matches.

how to transfer the videos from my canon digital video camcorder MVX10i to my mac?
Q. Hi i have a old digital video camcorder thats like 10 years old but i wonder how to transfer the videos form it to the mac. Its a MVX10i and connected with the cord and to the mac and nothing happend. i want to transfer every single video cassette to the mac and i have like 20 of them it have alot on import an stuffs in it so please help

A. The Canon MVX10i is a standard definition video, consumer grade, camcorder that records low compression, high quality video to miniDV tape.

Link to the manual:
http://files.canon-europe.com/files/soft24435/Manual/MVX10i_CUG_EN.pdf
This is the English version.

It behaves like any other miniDV tape based camcorder (with one exception form JVC that I will not address here).

Camcorder OFF. Connect a firewire cable (not USB) to the camcorder's DV port (not USB) and the Mac's firewire port (not USB). There was no firewire cable in the box with the camcorder. You did not tell us which "cord" you connected to your Mac - but if it was the USB cable that was in the box, that will allow transfer of stills from the camcorder's flash memory only. It will not transfer video from the digital tape. You *must* use a firewire cable.

See page 9 for the location of the camcorder's DV port. DV, firewire, IEEE1394 and i.Link are all the same thing. They are not USB and are not interchangeable with USB. USB-to-firewire cable/converter/adapter things will not work.

The camcorder's DV port is a 4-pin firewire connector. We do not know which Mac you are using. Older Macs all had a 6-Pin firewire port. More recent Macs either have no firewire port (MacBook Air, some versions of MacBook) or a 9-pin firewire port ... and most new Macs have a Thunderbolt port that will need a Thunderbolt-to-firewire adapter tail/cable from Apple (about $40) that provides a 9-pin firewire port. So... without knowing which Mac you have we don't know if you need a 4-pin to 6-pin firewire cable or 4-pin to 9-pin firewire cable.

Assuming you correctly connect the camcorder's DV port to the Mac's firewire port, and the Mac is on, *now* you can turn on the camcorder and put it into "Play (VCR)" mode. See the power/mode switch on page 10 of the manual. LOCK the video (there is a small tab on the back of the tape - it should be "open" to be locked). Rewind the video in the camcorder.

Launch iMovie. It will been in the Dock or in the Applications folder of the Mac. Name the file and set the destination of the video files for storage. Under File, select Import or Capture and the video should start importing.

ALERT: If the miniDV tapes are full, that is 60 minutes of video. This 60 minutes of imported video will consume about 14 gig of computer hard drive space when imported to iMovie. 14 gig x 20 tapes = 280 gig of computer hard drive space. We don't know how much available space there is on your Mac's hard drive. Consider using an external drive (connected using USB) for the videoeidinting project file storage.

Are cameras allowed at said concert?

Q. On Jan 31st I plan to go see my very first Linkin Park concert here in PA, I want to take my HD camcorder with me so I can record the whole event. I swore I saw a camera in use in their 2011 Announcement video on youtube. So, I just want to know for sure if cameras are indeed allowed at said event. Also, could I get a run down of everything that is / isn't typically permitted so I know what I can and cannot bring? Thnaks.

A. Usually you can have a camera but you can't use it. There will probably be an announcement before the show begins "Flash photography and video or audio recording of tonights performance is prohibited." Of course, many people ignore the warning and get away with it.

What camcorder should I buy?
Q. I have a pretty good idea about what I need but I'm not sure which model to choose yet. Here are some of my specifications:

# Dual SD card slot for dual memory continuous recording
# 1920x1080 Full HD recording
# 20x optical zoom with Konica Minolta HD lens

Best camera for a beginner photographer and filmmaker?

Q. I know i want a Nikon or a Canon, but i just dont know which ones are the best. I want to be able to do some really good quality photography and i want to be able to use the same camera to make short films. Price really isnt a problem, but id probably like to stay under $600. But im kinda stuck on researching cause i dont know what cameras to look at. Thanks!
thanks! and yah i meant video, actual film is too expensive and confusing haha. but a camera that can take stills and shoot video with really nice quality is what i need. and ill be willing to spend more if its worth it.

A. When you say "Price really isn't a problem" and tell us you want to spend under $600, you put yourself in a corner.

First of all shooting video using a dDLR is NOT the best choice.

http://www.luminous-landscape.com/reviews/camcorders/cam-cam.shtml

If you want to shoot video, you need to use a video camera. They are designed around producing video. A good 3-CCD video camera will cost about $5,000 or more

The two dSLR's that are known for being decent at shooting both stills and video are the Canon 5D, Mark III ($3,500 - no lens) or Nikon D800 ($3,000 - no lens) The D800 can capture uncompressed video if that is important to you.

As you can see, $600 is a tiny budget. My might be able to find a prosumer 3MOS video camera tht is close to your budget, but you will still need some kind of still camera.

Look at the Nikon D3200 and Canon T4i. They are entry level dSLR's and they have a video feature, but you still have to buy the necessary accessories to make it perform as a video camera.

Can we assume that you have a fast computer (at least a third generation Intel i5 CPU (i7 is better), 16 gb RAM and a handful of 2 tb drives and a good editing program? If not, you need to add another $3,000 to your budget

Best Film camera for beginner film maker?
Q. I'm a novice filmmaker and I need to buy a camera that shoots with a film-like quality for an independent film. Which is the best camera for me to buy?

A. Consumer level HD camcorders have 4 problems. 1) Blurry, fuzzy, out of focus areas closely around people in videos taken by consumer level HD camcorders. 2) Any movement, even a wave or lifting an arm, while in front of a recording consumer level HD camcorder, results in screen ghosts and artifacts being left on the video track, following the movement. Makes for bad video, sports videos are unwatchable. 3) These Consumer level HD camcorders all have a habit of the transferred to computer files are something you need to convert, thus losing your HD quality, to work with your editing software. 4) Mandatory maximum record times - 1 hour, 30 minutes, 8 minutes, 3 minutes – four different times advertised as maximum record time for some consumer level HD camcorders. No event I have ever been to is that short. Either take multiple camcorders or pack up with out getting the end of the event on video. Consumer level HD camcorders interpolate the video. This means they take one frame, make up the next 4 or 5 frames, take a frame and repeat this, over and over, for the remainder of the video, every video it takes is like this. With a MiniDV tape camcorder, record 60 or 90 minutes ( camcorder settings), 90 seconds or less to change a tape and record for 60 or 90 more and repeat till you run out of tapes.

You can get a Canon ZR960 for $250. It is a MiniDV tape camcorder, has a Mic jack. You will need a firewire (IEEE1394) card ($25 to 30) for the computer and a firewire cable (less than 10) to be able to transfer video to your computer. To say this is not HD, think about this. It would cost in excess of $3500 to get a HD camcorder that could equal the video Quality of a $250 Canon MiniDV tape camcorder.

should I buy an expensive camcorder or an expensive digital camera?

Q. I want to take quality pictures & videos with no intentions of doing one more then the other but when i got to "best-buy" it seems like both(camcorders & digital cameras) can shoot video as well as take pictures. so i don't know which one to choose over the other since i know nothing about either.

A. Digital cameras take video nowadays. You don't need camcorders anymore!! Go with the digital camera! I haven't heard of camcorders taking pictures. But digital cameras are also smaller (from what I've seen).

What type of camera/camcorder for youtube use?
Q. I want to purchase a video and audio capable digital camera so I can make my own video clips to put up on youtube, but I'm not sure what kind of camera to look for (there's so many different types of cameras). Do most users use a camcorder, digital camera, or what? I want something that costs no more than $300.00.
I don't want a web cam because I wouldn't be able to take it out with me.

A. I have a Sony Cyber-shot and I love it!! It was $350.00 at the time I purchased it, they have gone down in price now.

Help with choosing a camcorder with good sound quality?

Q. Ok, I've asked questions about camcorders, microphones, and webcams that have good sound quality. And I've found the perfect thing, a Panasonic HDC-SD100 HD Digital Camcorder. But guess what, it costs a little less than 1000 dollars. And thats too much. Is there any other camcorders that are similar to this one, but has a little smaller price tag? I'm okay with bad video quality, but I need the sound quality.

A. Here's a bit of camcorder insight: no matter how much you spend on a camcorder, the built-in mic sucks! Obviously some are better than others, but none would be sufficient for real professional stuff. Built-in mics have an omni-directional pickup pattern which means it picks up sound in every direction. It sounds nice, but it's not. You pick up annoying background noise, and the overall sound is unfocused and quite has quite a bit of echo. So my advice is to get the cheapest camcorder with a 3.5mm mini-stereo microphone input which will allow you to connect external mics...

Some cheap** ones: Canon ZR series (starting at $200-ish. But not all have the mic input, so make sure of that. I know the ZR40 has one, as well as the newer models the ZR900 and ZR930. If I'm correct, the older models of Canon Opturas have them as well (like the Optura 10). I believe the Panasonic PV GS500-ish (can't remember the exact number) has one too.
Your cheapest option is to get the ZR900 (or if you can find a used model of the ZR40 or Optura 10).

Now that you've save a lot o money, you have more to spend on a good external mic. If you want to go the cheap route, get a nice mini-stereo shotgun:
1) RODE VideoMic
2) Sennheiser MKE300
3) Azden SGM-X
4) Audio-Technica ATR-55

If you want the absolute best audio, get an XLR adapter (the good kind, not those crappy XLR female to mini-male cables) like those made by Beachtek for around $180, and get a pro XLR mic:
1) Sennheiser ME66
2) RODE NTG-2 (or NTG-1)

the Azden SGM-1X is pretty good too, and cheap :)

Hope that helps!!!

A good digital camcorder with external mic hookup?
Q. What is a good digital camcorder that has an external microphone hookup?
Something that would be good for online newscasts, etc.

A. What is your budget?

Camcorder (these are only "prosumer", not pro grade):
Standard definition: Canon GL2
High Definition: Sony HDR-FX7

Mics:
Sennheiser wireless systems - EW100 G3 ENG Wireless Deluxe Kit.
Includes a lavaliere and wireless handheld... and two base stations (one for each mic). Base stations are camera mountable, but if you want to do this, a special bracket is necessary.

Tripod:
Manfrotto 190XDB 3-Section Tripod & 501HDV Fluid Head

On-camera video light:
NRG 56001 Varalux Professional Dimmable DC On-Camera Light
Power supply (battery belt):
NRG 87014-1 Field-Pro system

Most of this stuff should be available from bhphotovideo or adorama.

If you want to look like the "real" news casts, they are digitizing the video coming in to $100,000 studio cameras. Just because you are on the web does not mean you get to go cheap or cut corners.
