Looking for quality mini DV camcorder that is good in low light...?

Q. I need a recommendation. Am willing to spend $700 or more for camcorder that is exceptionally good in low light and has at least 12X optical zoom. there are too many options and I need to make a quick decision. I shoot mostly my kids' school shows.

A. Try the pv-gs300 and 500. im getting a pv-gs400, but it came out two years ago so they are hard to get now and it has average low light performance. also, i think sony's handycams might offer good low light. but if i were you i would go to www.camcorderinfo.com and search for cameras. most of the cameras now come with at least 12x zoom (usually. gs400 has 12x). when searching, look for mainly two things, and three if it has it. look for lux and ccd. lower lux means good low light, so i think you would be good with around 5 lux give or take a few. also look for ccds that are at least (1/4.7 inch) in size (i think thats the smallest they come in although im not sure. some cams might offer (1/4 inch) ccds, and if those cameras offer good quality overall as well, buy it! i think most (1/3 inch) ccds are in the prosumer cams. the rule is go for lower lux, and a larger ccd. the third thing is camcorderinfo often has light comparisons, in which they take a color card and do tests under different lighting conditions. if youve narrowed it down to a few, looking at these might help (you cant miss it if its there. you will clearly see the color bars on that page). anyways, i hope this helps, and if in doubt, buy something in the pv-gs series (anything above 300 is fine i think) because they offer, at the least, average low light, and i think the 500 offers very good light. also they are 3ccd for good picture quality.

Can somebody suggest me a good budget camcorder that has Full HD recording and excellent low light recording?
Q. Can somebody suggest me a good budget camcorder that has Full HD recording and excellent low light recording?
A built in flash light and good image capturing is also preferred but not necessary.

A. HD Camcorders, that being any Camcorder that does not use MiniDV tape for Video Storage and DSLR Cameras interpolate the video, which means of every 25 frames of video, 4 or 5 frames are taken by the lens assembly; the other frames in between these are filled in by the camcorder inner circuitry, thus giving you not true video. It looks like this -one frame from the lens assembly, 7or 8 from the electronic circuitry, one frame from the lens assembly, 7or 8 from the electronic circuitry, one frame from the lens assembly, 7or 8 from the electronic circuitry, one frame from the lens assembly, 7or 8 from the electronic circuitry, from front to back of the video. Near impossible to edit, even when you have the Multi port processor computer with the big 1GB Graphics card and a Sound card that is required to edit, view, watch and work with the files these camcorders produce.

DSLR Cameras, all Makes, all Models, all have the same problem when video taping some long videos, all overheat at the 13 to 18 minute mark, depending on the Make and Model. This is unavoidable, it all has to with the fact, video is an afterthought in DSLR camera production.

Consumer Level HD Camcorders and DSLR Cameras have 4 problems. 1) Blurry, fuzzy, out of focus areas closely around people in videos taken by consumer level HD camcorders. 2) Any movement, even a wave or lifting an arm, while in front of a recording Consumer Level HD Camcorder and DSLR Cameras, results in screen ghosts and artifacts being left on the video track, following the movement. Makes for bad video, sports videos are unwatchable. 3) These Consumer Level HD Camcorders and DSLR Cameras all have a habit of the transferred to computer files are something you need to convert, thus losing your HD quality, to work with your editing software. 4) Mandatory maximum record times - 1 hour, 30 minutes, 8 minutes, 3 minutes four different times advertised as maximum record time for some Consumer Level HD Camcorders and DSLR Cameras. No event I have ever been to is that short. Either take multiple camcorders and DSLR Cameras or pack up with out getting the end of the event on video.

MiniDV is currently the most popular format for consumer digital camcorders. MiniDV camcorders are typically more affordable than their HDD and DVD counterparts. Each MiniDV tape will typically hold an hour of footage at normal recording speed and quality. MiniDV tapes are available for purchase at not only electronic and camera stores, but also at drugs stores and grocery stores, making them easy to find while your on vacation. There are literally hundreds of MiniDV camcorders available; both in standard and high-definition. And add the fact that to get a HD camcorder that could produce better video quality footage, one would have to spend in excess of $3500 for that camcorder that could produce higher quality video

Camcorder - optical zoom?

Q. I have searched Google but I would still like someone to confirm that the bigger the optical zoom the better, i.e. 40x optical zoom is better than 10x optical zoom.
I was out with my parents today looking at camcorders and the Sony staff member told us that the less the better. Actually, what I think he said was the less optical zoom the better the quality. (Maybe all three of us heard him wrong and he was talking about digital zoom) Does having, say, a 25x rather than a 40x have any advantage in any way?

So, optical zoom is better... the bigger the number? The DCR-SR35E costs 399, has 30 GB, 40x optical zoom. The DCR-SR75E costs 599, has 60 GB, 25x optical zoom. The still pictures have a difference of 200,000 pixels. I'm just wondering why the more expensive one has an inferior optical zoom.

A. Looks like you are having fun out there :)

DCR-SR75E with the 25x optical zoom is the winning choice, due to its lens system.

Do not be tempted by the lower price and the 40x zoom on the other one. Being honest, you will never need the 40x zoom - and when you Do zoom @ 40x, I doubt it will be anything satisfactory.

In real life conditions, we hardly zoom over 3x for landscape and 8x for portraiture.

If your budget is right, go there again with your parents and get the DCR-SR75E !

p.s - you should also try out a few Canon camcorders if they are available there :)

Are there any digital cameras and/or camcorders offering optical zoom in video mode?
Q. Hi, anybody knows if there are any digital cameras and/or camcorders offering optical zoom in video mode?

All I've ever had are camcorders and digital cameras that feature only digital zoom when recording video, and the quality of that zooming is lousy; you see the quality difference immediately, when playing back the videos.

If anybody knows, I'd appreciate some suggestions, preferably budget cameras, USB compatible, so I can transfer to my PC.

Thanks a lot in advance for your suggestions.

A. All "real" camcorders have optical zoom and digital zoom.

It sounds like you are using a very low-end flip-like or toy camcorder or a camera that is primarily used for taking stills (and happens to have a "video" feature).

MiniDV tape based camcorders provide the best available video quality - but they use firewire (not USB) to transfer video to your computer. USB is only used for transferring stills from the camcorder's memory card or webstreaming (of the camcorder has either of these features). Adding a firewire port is typically not difficult - and it is pretty cheap.
Canon ZR800, ZR950, Sony DCR-HC52, HC62 and Panasonic PV-GS320 are good, entry-level, examples.

Hard drive and flash based camcorders compress their video a lot, but the quality isn't too bad... Video is transferred using USB. Sony DCR-SR45 and Canon FS10 are examples. They typically cost more than miniDV, but that does not mean the video quality is better - compression of the video information translates into lost data and can result in reduced video quality.

In any case, when you shop for a camcorder, do not use digital zoom as a feature comparison item - because when you bring the camcorder home, your first step is to turn digital zoom off. Use only Optical zoom.

Other things to look for in a good camcorder:
Mic-in jack (optional, but very useful)
Some sort of audio manual control (again, optional, but if you think you might be recording loud audio, like bands, this will be a requirement).

DO NOT BUY A DVD BASED CAMCORDER. Their video is terrible - especially for editing or uploading to the web. The discs are a pain and can be unreliable (resulting in list video).

Camcorder for filming ?

Q. I'm in high school and want to get more serious with my filming and want a more high def camera. I like it to be like a shoulder mount. But if not that is fine. I also like looking into the lense so I can see it better. Any suggestions? And 1000 is my limit.

A. This Canon VIXIA HF M40 Full HD Camcorder is a wonderful camcorder. My husband uses it the most but even I can use it. You don't have to be a techy to use it but it helped me to read the well-written, easy to understand manual first. It is light and easy to carry even in my purse but we did buy a camcorder bag. One of the best parts is that the camera closes when not in use and that really helps. The touch screen is fun to use even though for me, there were too many choices to make as far as settings. I am of the "let's just turn it on and shoot" mind. But my husband said it worked perfectly for any kind of shot. It was easy to download the videos to my pc and enjoy. The playback feature is invaluable as you can see right away what you did in case you missed something.

Arizona Memorial Camcorder policy?
Q. Are we allowed to bring camcorders to the USS memorial. Last time I went there were no bags, allowed so I had to leave my camcorder behind until the trip was done. I want to know if it changed. Thanks!

A. You can bring the camcorder, but not the bag.

"Strict security measures prohibit purses, handbags, fanny packs, backpacks, camera bags, diaper bags, luggage and/or other items that offer concealment. Visitors may bring cameras, cell phones, and wallets, although since no bags are allowed, you are encouraged to pack lightly."

is this good for a camcorder?

Q. i found a amazing camcorder, but the thing is that when i was looking at the details on it, well it said it had 0.8mp, i was wondering is that good for a camcorder....?
http://www.jr.com/panasonic/pe/PAN_SDRH85K/

A. yes its a nice camcorder Panasonic SDR-H85K Std-Def Camcorder
# Records Onto HDD (80GB), SD/SDHC/SDXC Memory Card
# Recording Format MPEG2, H.264/AVC [Motion Image]; JPEG (Still Image)
# Image Sensor (Total) 1/8 CCD

Can I make a dvd directly from my hard drive camcorder without having to upload all 80gb of data onto my comp?
Q. My problem is that I do not want to store 80GB of data on my computer from my harddrive camcorder. I would need to buy a separate computer just for my camcorder video! I want to connect my camcorder to my computer and then just act like the camcorder is an external hard drive. Is this possible? This is similar to what I do with my digital camera. For example, each time I print photos, I don;t upload them to my computer, I just view them using my computer and then print them. No uploading/saving necessary.

A. Yes, the camcorder is treated as an external hard drive - at least for my Sony HDD camcorder. So you won't need to transfer any video to your computer in order to burn a DVD.

I use the Sony DVD Direct DVD burner - it will burn a DVD directly with the videos from the camcorder...no computers required.

Kodak playsport complete review?

A. OK, how about this one

Is the Kodak Playsport compatible with iMovie 11?
Q.

A. Kodak video is quicktime which is Mac compatible including iMovie.
Kodak is what i use every day but not for video. Kodak invented the camcorder in 1981 so they should be considered inferior to the companies that just started putting that feature in their cameras. Had Kodak invented the CCD instead of the camcorder, like RCA then they would still be in business. Oops take that either way. The main problem is made in America doesn't mean much to photographers, Japan is King.

Camcorders?

Q. What is the best brand for digital camcorders? JVC? SAMSUNG? ETC?

A. For years, I've done just fine by JVC, Canon, Sony, and Panasonic. I currently use a Panasonic camcorder (PV-GS65) at home, and have recommended a Panasonic professional camcorder (AG-HVX200) for a university TV organization, and we've been happy with both. Those cameras were selected for having the features we needed at the best price available. I'm not necessarily saying "go with Panasonic." There are other great brands out there, and any one of them is good if it meets your needs. It all depends on what you need to do with your camcorder.

Look at reviews and specifications. What do you want to do with your camcorder? Do you want to try editing, or do you simply want the easiest way to show video to your family? Do you plan on doing a lot of night shooting, or is spectacular performance in good light enough for you? Do you want a variety of manual control options? Where do you plan on using the camcorder? Do you plan on using an external microphone with your camcorder?

In short, find out exactly what you plan to use it for, and find out which one best meets your needs. The major brands have all been doing this for a long time, and all have a tendency to put out quality products.

How to get videos off jvc camcorder?
Q. I HAVE A jvc compact vhs camcorder model gr-sx265. The only hooks up i see is s video cord and the red, yellow hook up to a tv. I know this is an old camcorder but i cant afford one and my sister gave me this one.Is there a way to get the videos on my laptop? So i can pu the movies on a disc not vsh?

A. Try this.
ANALOG
*If you have an analog (VHS) camcorder
or VHS-c...
You need an analog converter, either internal card or external such as the dazzle. It's very easy to use and come with good software. You would hook your analog VHS camera or VCR to the analog converter, the dazzle and then hook the dazzle to your PC. The dazzle cost around 85.00 , but worth the money if you have a lot of VHS to tapes to convert. You can also purchase a http://www.amazon.com/EasyCAP-DC60-Creator-Capture-High-quality/dp/B002H3BSCM which is way cheaper but does not come with editing software. Fine if you already have editing software.
Anytime you convert analog to digital, you will lose quality, but loss of quality is better than losing all those old memories.

**Please Note There is no 8mm or Hi 8 to VHS Adapter that currently exists. This type of VHS Adapter only exists with VHS-C tape

They also make VHS to DVD recorders and they work fine for home movies that you don't want to edit. They do not work on copyrighted DVD's.

Camcorders?

Q. ok I'm trying to look up the cameras that are used to film movies but noting but like hand held camcorders comes up, is there a special name for them?

A. Even with digital, a majority of big budget filmmakers still prefer celluloid film--that's right, the old school analog stuff. Most shoot on 35mm film cameras, but some shoot in 65mm, which is even higher quality--for Imax productions and such.
These film cameras used in movies cannot be bought; you must rent them at insanely high rates. They are worth approximately $500,000 in many cases. They are usually made by Panavision or Arri.http://panavision.com/
http://www.arri.de/
There are several reasons most filmmakers prefer film: (1) aesthetics of film (DOF, contrast, grain, etc) (2) 35mm film is actually higher quality than the finest HD camera
However, film is much more expensive. Putting the cost of the camera aside, the film itself is also very expensive, not to mention the cost of film processing in film labs, and if you are digitizing film, it costs quite a bit to get it re-printed to film for viewing in theaters.
16mm is also a popular format among lower budget filmmakers, though it is still pretty expensive.

You can actually buy some lower-end 35mm and 16mm film cameras here: http://visualproducts.com/
Although film continues to dominate the industry, more and more movies are shot digitally. Here are the digital cinema cameras you'd see on big budget films:
1) RED One http://www.red.com/
2) Dalsa Origin http://www.dalsa.com/dc/4k_products/origin_main.asp
3) Vision Research Phantom65 http://www.visionresearch.com/index.cfm?sector=htm/files&page=camera_65_new
4) Panavision Genesis http://panavision.com/product_detail.php?maincat=1&cat=36&id=375&node=c0,c136,c137
5) Arri D-21 http://www.arri.de/entry/products.htm
6) Silicon Imaging SI-2K http://www.siliconimaging.com/DigitalCinema/SI_2K_key_features.html
7) Thompson Viper FilmStream http://www.thomsongrassvalley.com/products/cameras/viper/
8) Sony F35 http://pro.sony.com/bbsc/ssr/product-F35/

These cameras are much better than your average HD camera. Some shoot in even higher resolutions like the RED One, Dalsa Origin and Phantom65, which shoot in 4K--approx 4X the resolution of HD. Again, these cameras are not for sale, except for the RED One and Sony F35.

However, these cameras are still a bit pricy for a lot of filmmakers, so many indie filmmakers, as well as filmmakers for documentaries, and news broadcasters use Professional Panasonic Varicams or Sony CineAlta cameras:
http://catalog2.panasonic.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ModelList?storeId=11201&catalogId=13051&catGroupId=14616
http://pro.sony.com/bbsc/ssr/cat-broadcastcameras/cat-cinealta/

Still too expensive, a lot of low budget filmmakers use prosumer cameras like:
1) Sony PMW-EX1
2) Panasonic HVX200
3) JVC GY-HD110U

A few films were shot on the Canon XL2 as well as the Panasonic DVX100B

hope that helps.

What is camcorder sensor resolution?
Q. Im thinking about purchasing this camera for independent films, http://www.google.com/products/catalog?q=camcorder&hl=en&cid=16088679671286883191&os=tech-specs, I was wondering what the difference was between Camcorder Sensor Resolution and Effective Video Resolution? Which is more important? Is this a good camcorder to buy? If not, what would you recommend? Thanks!

A. for example a camera may say it captures 18 Megapixels and its the size of an 18 megapixel picture, but the actual "effective resolution" may be around 4 or 6 so you can see how it blows up the image reducing image quality. the best resolution from a camera that records vid and stays consistent are DSLR cameras. they are always high quality

I just picked up one of these and since there wasn't a real review yet, here are my initial thoughts. Considering the price, I bought this with low demands and expectations. It's very easy to use. I had no problem connecting it to my computer. Recording quality is good enough if I'm outside or in a well lit room but otherwise it's useless. This isn't for rooms lit with a lamp or two. That shouldn't be too shocking though. Still pictures are coming out blurry. This won't be replacing my digital camera anytime soon. The usb cover is held on by a very flimsy piece of rubber. That'll break off in no time. I like the screen. It flips around so you can see yourself as you record, if you're into that kinda thing. Sound quality was better than I expected. It picks up a lot of noise but it works. It only comes with 16mb of memory so unless you want about ten seconds of video you will need a memory card. When I got home I picked up a 1gb sandisk card here on amazon for about $15. great deal. Overall, I think I got my $79 worth. I think this would be a great starter camera for a kid, or for someone on a budget like me who just wants to share some nonsense online with friends. I hope to have fun with it on my trip out west.

Hope this help :) Good Luck!

The lowest price for a camcorder at Walmart?
Q. Well, I've been watching Michelle Phan, and Bubz Beauty on Youtube.com. I'd love to also put out very cool, HD, videos of makeup. I will buy a camcorder at Walmart (so don't list any other places). Which one has the lowest price AND is good for Youtube? Any links? The quality needs to be in HD please, no blurry videos! Also, some good stands for It?

A. I added a link that shows all the camcorders sold at Walmart.com. Any good sturdy tripod and smooth panning head will suffice.

Can you buy a Flip Ultra HD Camcorder at the Costco in Tallahassee, Florida?

Q. DO THEY??

A. I'm looking for a pocket camcorder and I've been checking almost everywhere, including Costco (I'm in Texas but I checked on line) and Costco has Flip mino II HD (that's the only one)
You may check contact Costco @ the website if they have the one you are looking for, they will let you know.
Good luck!

Electronics - Camcorders?
Q. Is it better to buy a hard drive or a DVD camcorder

Also is is better to buy a DVD or mini DVD

My laptop will burn DVD's so my options are open, I just dont know much about camcorders - I need something that has alot of bang for the buck ! :) thanks

A. I was told a hard drive is better because you can "tape" up to thirty hours of video, also all you have to do to transfer the video is a USB cable. You don't have to buy or use memory cards or mini disks or anything.

I saw that in Costco they sell a pretty decent HD camcorder (JVC) for approx. $ 500

what is the best HD camcorder under $700?
Q. I'm looking for a new camcorder. Something that I can use for family outings and especially my kids in sports. One of the most important things for me is the ability to easily burn a disc - I had an old Sony that burned to mini-dvd but in 3 files. I want to be able to just have 1 file on my computer. Any suggestions? I've heard good things about Panasonic, Canon, and Sony.

A. I would consider Canon VIXIA HV40 HD HDV Camcorder
* HDV format delivers high-definition video to miniDV tape
* Genuine Canon 10x HD video lens; SuperRange Optical Image Stabilizer
* DIGIC DV II image processor; 24p Cinema Mode, 30p Progressive Mode
* 2.7-inch Multi-Angle Vivid Widescreen LCD
* HDMI terminal for easy, one-cable connectivity to your HDTV

Hello what are you getting for Christmas? ?

Q. I'm going to get an iPad 2 a 3ds and some nintendo 64 games bye bye

A. I am also getting the 3DS

Because you can play music (even with the system close)

You can LOWER the VOLUME of 3D

You can also turn the 3D OFF Completely

And 3D is good for working out your eye muscles & brain to keep them in shape as shown in this link:

http://www.aoa.org/x17309.xml

The Nintendo 3DS has downloadable 3D Music videos from today's American music artist which I have already downloaded the 3 free 3D Music Videos to watch anywhere and the 3DS has 3D "Blue Man Group" video and College Humor (in 3D) with the FREE "Nintendo Video" App that you can download (but its 4 3D Videos at a time and they replace them once in a while) and you can download cheap downloadable 3D Apps & 3D games costing from 99 cents to $5.99 and the Nintendo 3DS also has FREE downloadable 3D Apps & 3D Games, which I have already downloaded 3 Free 3D Apps and I have downloaded 2 Free 3D Games and the 3DS has a 3D Camera and I have already used the 3DS 3D Camera to take 3D photos and I have uploaded some of my 3D footage online using the Nintendo 3DS's Web Browser to upload my 3D footage online and I have used my 3DS Web Browser to also download other peoples 3D footage from the Internet on my 3DS Web Browser and I have view all sorts of 3D content on 3D Websites online on my 3DS's Web Browser and I have use my 3DS 3D Camera to play 3D Augmented Reality games as well and it's all in 3D without the Glasses using the 3DS 3D Camera and It has beautiful 3D HD graphics that equal to that of a 3D HD version of Wii Graphics and I have Streamed 3D Videos Online on my 3DS in the eShop and I have also Watch 3D Trailers for upcoming 3D movies coming to Theaters in 3D and I have done all of this in 3D Without the Glasses

The 3DS with a Wi-Fi Update can RECORD 3D Videos in 60 fps (unlike other camcorders, that only Record in 2D Only and in up to 30 fps only)

Top HD Camcorders under $500?

Q. What are the top 2011 HD camcorders under $500?

A. The top HD camcorders for under $500 are all JUNK. It would take you in excess of $3500 to get a HD camcorder that could even compete withe video Quality of a $300 MiniDV tape camcorder.

consumer level HD camcorders have 3 issues. 1) Fuzzy, blurry, out of focus areas around people in the HD video. 2) Any movement in front of a recording HD camcorder shows up in the finished video with screen ghosts and artifacts following the movement, ruining the video. 3) Lack of record times. 1 hour, go home, no way to change storage or continue shooting. Some offer a whole whopping 30 minutes. What, record 1/3 of the event then put the camcorder away or leave.

You can get the Canon ZR960 for $250 or the ZR930 for about $300. Both of these camcorders are MiniDV tape based. Both camcorders have a Mic jack. Both of these camcorder can take better quality video and audio than any sub $3000 camcorder.

Best Pro Camcorder under $3000 for Film making !!!!!!!!!!!!!!?
Q. Hi,

I'm planning to make a movie for bigscreen , I have written a script and I've got one small investor for that .I have a budget of around $3000 for Camcorder, kindly suggest me all possible best camcorder within that range.. Pls note my plan is there for big screens(theatre release),and my preference is HD cam..

Sam

A. I bought this item for a Church looking to do it's own production. We tape both services and do more produced and edited media for use in services. The camera is in use alot. If you are buying it for indoors filming, invest in a good set of lights. This camera gets grainy on high zoom in low light. I don't know any camera in this price range that does not. Other than that, I have not found any problems that will jump out and surprise you. But the quality will.

You can complain about what this camera does not offer (XLR ins, and it is menu driven), but those are advertised. Don't buy this camera if those are deal breakers for you. What it does do it does well. And the battery life with the cmos chips is worth some of the trade offs with ccd cameras. I easily shoot two and a half hours without plugging in (on the OEM battery that comes with it). That is amazing to me. I can position for best shot of the event, instead of hanging with the others by the plugs.

I have been happy that I made the technology jump to this camera instead of playing it safe with a more industry standard camera. I would recomend this to anyone who is looking for an entry level production camera. It is a bargain at its price.

Hard drive Camcorders???

Q. What is the best Hard drive camcorder for the money. I want to spend around 500 or less. I've been reading reviews of the sony handycam and jvc models but am confused on the online reviews for picture quality in low light. Any suggestions on cameras that are better?

A. A $500 hard drive camcorder? It would be best if you just keep saving your money.

If you want best possible video quality, then you will stay with miniDV tape. Least compression = best available video quality.

Currently, the only really good camcorder hard drive is an external - from Firestore. It saves in DV and HDV format just like miniDV tape and you need a miniDV tape based camcorder to use one... not like the heavily compressed consumer internal hard drives...

what is better mini dv or hard drive camcorder?
Q. which one is better mini dv or hard drive camcorder. whitch one has better picture quality.

A. Any media that compresses the least. In the case of miniDV, the storage format is DV (or HDV if a high definition camcorder shooting hidef video). Because miniDV tape uses these storage formates - least compression - the video quality is best. There are hard drives for camcorders that can store in DV or HDV, but they are external.
http://firestore.com/solutions/catalog.asp?id=3

Typically, consumer hard drive camcorders compress a lot (MPEG2 for standard def; AVCHD for hidef). When the video is compressed this much at the start of the process, anything downstream cannot expect best video quality.

Video compression = discarded data = reduced video quality.
