What video camera would you recommend for these purposes?

Q. I'd like to get a digital video camera that I can use to record videos of my guitar playing/singing or footage from concerts to post online. So one important thing I'm looking for in a camera is good sound recording capability. I'd also like one that can take an external mic. I'm looking for one under $400.

A. you can consider Canon VIXIA HF M30 Dual Flash Memory Camcorder
# Genuine Canon 15x HD Video Lens delivers unsurpassed image quality
# Canon 3.89-Megapixel Full HD CMOS Image Sensor captures video at 1920 x 1080 resolution
# Canon DIGIC DV III Image Processor provides the ultimate in color and imaging performance
# Dynamic SuperRange OIS corrects a full range of motion

Whats the best camcorder for me to buy?
Q. I need it to be under 400 dollars, have good picture quality, microphones need to be able to work with it and compatibility with imovie on my mac.

A. If you can't stand Mini DV tape, the JVC MG255 gives *decent* video quality with the HDD convenience, and it should work with little trouble in iMovie HD from the iLife 2006 suite. If you have iMovie 08, I can't comment on that. I have a JVC MG555 and it works fine with iMovie HD (06), but I have to delete the first frame of each clip, as there is some overlay ghosting effect (deleting the first frame for about 20 clips takes less than a minute for me).

If you can handle Mini DV tapes, then you have lots of better options. Check out the Canon ZR line for cheap cams with mic input (some of them have it), but I warn you, I bought one and absolutely hated the horrible tape motor noise that I couldn't get rid of (the one I bought had no mic input; I was stupid back then).

Honestly, you aren't going to get "great" video quality for under $400, but because I'm not sure what you mean by "good" I can't guarantee what you'll like. The kind of camcorder that has a mic input is the kind that starts to merge itself into the higher price range.

I recommend you to look at the Canon Elura 100, which won an award on the below-listed site, and has a mic-in. It's cheap too, at under $400.

Check out www.camcorderinfo.com to see if anything they reviewed suits your tastes.

Disk vs tape vs sd card for memory used for ghost hunting?

Q. I'm trying to buy some new camcorders for ghost hunting but I don't know what I should use for the memory

A. Large capacity SD card. Far more accurate recording, easier to reuse.

What nightvision cameras do ghost adventures use?
Q. i want to ghost hunt but i dont have a nightvision camera. I watched ghost adventures and wondering what kind of camera they use.

A. Some Sony camcorders have a built-in infrared emitter for those no-light black/white video captures. Look for "NightShot" or "SuperNightShot" in the feature list. For the televised folks, the Sony HVR-A1 is common (or its consumer sibling the HDR-HC1 that would be used/refurbished). The HDR-CX700 or HDR-CX900 series *might* have the capability - check the specs at sony.com.

There is an inexpensive Bell & Howell camcorder with a built-in infrared emitter - but no real pro would use it...

Where can I get a camcorder REALLY cheap?

Q. I don't care if it's second-hand, I don't care if it's digital or analog, I don't care how many mega-pixals or what resolution (?) it is... I'm pretty clueless about all that stuff, anyhow. I just want a camcorder cheap. And not one I have to hook up to a computer, just one that can go on a t.v.

A. If you want truly cheap, and really don't care about resolution, etc. Try ToysRUs The "Vidster Digital Video Camera" goes for $59.99.

It has the option of going to a PC, but it also has an audio/video cord, you can plug that to your VCR, or DVD-Recorder, and record it that way, then clear the memory on the toy camera, and go again.

(This is assuming your in the US {Europe uses different standards}, and that all the advertising for the camera is right.)

Where online can I find a good dvd camcorder?
Q. I am looking for a dvd camcorder online because they are too expensive in stores. I would like a Sony, Panasonic, or Canon one but Ill take whatever works nicely. I cant seem to find one on ebay or Amazon thats in my price range or working. The ones on ebay get up to $300.
Do know of any other site where I can buy nice working camcorders cheap?

A. Nowhere.

There is no such thing as a "good" consumer grade DVD camcorder.

Please adjust your requirements - miniDV tape has best available video quality but your computer requires a firewire port. Flash memory and hard disc drive use USB to transfer the files but you usually need to convert them to a file format your computer can deal with if you want to do any editing.

Consumer DVD based camcorder barely make useful doorstops.

What kind of camera and speed was used to film this rap video?
Q. I'm trying to find the exact specifications on replicating a video of this quality in 2012. What speed, lens, or camera would allow me to do this?

here is the youtube link to the video:

Capone n Noreaga, Mobb Deep, Tragedy - L.A L.A
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YhEJ2Oe0vXc

A. Hi Joelvan, and welcome to Yahoo!Answers:

This 1996 music video could have been made either with film cameras or video cameras. Several lenses were used (you can tell when the "fisheye" or wide-angle lens shots come in). Depending on the budget for the production crew, film would have probably been the most cost-effective medium for all the different locations used, considering what the cost of good camcorders was back then and the difficulty in finding changeable lens kits (although screw-on front fisheye adapters might have been used with a stock video camera lens).

The high-contrast black & white effect could have been done with film stock or with a B&W video effect. (Same thing can be done today with either a video camera setting or in the editing process.) The "gamma" of film can be altered or a grainy high-contrast look in video achieved to yield what you see in the final music video.

For a modern version of this production, shot in 4:3 screen ratio (not widescreen HD), you'd want a good miniDV, Betacam, or DVCAM tape-format camcorder with changeable lenses (or decent threadable front filter-mount fisheyes for those scenes). A standard 10x or 12x zoom lens would handle the other shots. I'd shoot either regular 30fps video on an older camcorder, or 24p or 30p on a newer camera that has changeable frame-rate settings. I'd also shoot in full-color, waiting until post production (editing) to subtract the color and alter the contrast.

hope this helps,
--Dennis C.

What is a good camera under $800 for making pro-like motocross movies? Best quality!?

Q. I need a camera that will take very great quality HD videos for a motocross movie that I will be selling. It needs to be under $800. THANKS
I'm making a motocross movie to sell in stores but the highest I can possibly go is $800. It needs to be compatible with Sony Vegas Pro and go into the computer through USB. Also, it has to be great with fast moving things, i.e. the bikes.

A. For the best quality I would suggest a Mini-dv camcorder but in your situation, you may be better off with a media card camcorder. I know the quality is not as good as a mini-dv camcorder but because of the huge amount of vibration the camera is going to be put through, I think a Mini-dv would spend more time being repaired, dust and vibration enemy of a camera. Forget HDD camcorders it will die very quickly, and a dvd camcorder does not even warrant a mention.

as for the model there are loads, its down to personal choice, and you need to find a camera that you are comfortable with. the best thing is to spend some time looking at some cameras, hold them get the feel for them. then make your decision.

Good luck

RR

What's a good HD Camera for recording and achieving slow motion with?
Q. I need a good HD camera to record with that won't break the bank (preferably under $800, that possible?). I've heard time and time again that I should get a camera that records in 60i, then in post production I can slow it down to 24p. What camera are good for this?

A. You are mixing formats.

60i = 30 frames per second - this is standard NTSC frame rate. When you slow the video to about 14 frames per second, you will start to see poor "slow motion" results. It gets worse the slower you go. "Slowing" to 24 fps is an attempt to get a cinematic look/feel because this is what film based cameras record at. This is not a slow motion feature.

If you really want slow motion, then record a a fast frame rate. Some Sony consumer camcorders have "SmoothSlowRecord" that allows a few seconds burst of up to 120 frames per second so when the video is played back at normal speed (30 fps), it is truly slow motion. Some of the Casio Exilim DSCs can do faster than that.

If what you want is the 24 fps "cinematic look", then you need a camcorder that records at 24 fps. The Canon HV40 and many of the HF series camcorders do that. Some Sonys, too. But keep in mind that it is a lot of marketing hype that pushes that... If you REALLY want the 24 fps "film look", you REALLY need to be using a film camera - not digital video.

If you decide you really want to do the digital 24fps thing, be sure your video editor can deal with that and the "drop down" conversion issues - many cannot.

Best camcorder for High school football under the lights?

Q. I am going to be filming my sons HIgh School Football games under the lights at night. I have a Sony 8mm camcorder but want something more HD. We of course will be making game films from it and need good detail and zoom, good quality under low light. I know there are tons out there, any suggestions?

A. Since the game will be played under the field lights, that is not "low light". You should use the white balance control, but any decent consumer cam will get acceptable video of the game play. Crowd shots will probably be grainey.

What is your budget?

Because of fast action on the field, low compression video is strongly recommended. For consumer cams, that means miniDV tape - which means your computer MUST have an available firewire port because that is the only way the camcorder will connect and get the high definition video into the computer. Suggested camcorders include Canon HV40 and Sony HDR-HC1.

If there is no firewire port on the computer and one cannot be added then second choice is flash memory. File capture can use USB, but your computer must be very robust and th video editor must deal with MOD or MTS files. Check the Canon HF S100 or Sony HDR CX500 series.

No DVD based.

A computer with lots of RAM and pretty fast CPU...

Since hard disc drive camcorders have known issues with vibration and it is known that loud crowds and marching bands can also cause high vibration levels, HDD camcorders are not on the short list.

You will also need a video editor that can deal with the video captured by the camcorder you select. And at least a monopod or tripod. If you zoom in on the action, there is no way the captured image will be steady.

What are some good camcorders from best buy that shoot a short video?

A. Check out this site:

What is the best digital camcorder lens for videos and picture?
Q. I decided to buy a camcorder, but I have trouble deciding which is the best Lens for digital video camcorder and the brand. I need your expert help to me to choose the rigth camcorder.

Please tell me out of your own experience.
What type of camcorder is the best ?
What type of lens is the best?
Which brand camcorder last long?
What to look out for new camcorders.

A. with consumer camcorders, you take the lens that comes with the camera. professional video cameras that offer replaceable lenses do not take still pictures, that is a marketing "feature" of consumer grade cameras only. Pro gear uses large format ccd's, often 2/3 inch size, so a 16x lens is a pretty hefty piece of glass. Consumer 1/6 inch ccds can be fitted with a cheap 40x short focal length lens as no big deal. The most common manufacterers of pro-mount video lenses are Fujinon and Canon.

How do you transfer footage from camcorder to Laptop?

Q. I have a Sony Digital 8 Handycam Camcorder and I have a usb cable for it but I cant put my footage from it onto my laptop all I can do is record while it is connected to my computer.
Can anybody help me please?

A. You should be able to open up your documents program then look at the top where you would find the different drives listed and find one labeled SONY DIGITAL 8 (D:) it could be a different letter though. Then open the file and find the one you want and the download to your computer.

Which camcorder tape is the best for my camcorder?
Q. I have a digital 8 camcorder. What type of hi8 film is the best? I see different kinds still being sold as "premium" "camcorder tape" or "standard quality." I'm thinking that if the data is stored in digital form anyway, it doesn't matter if the tape is "standard" or "premium." There is no noise when it is stored as digital data, right?

A. I would receommed that you look for the best per/minute price on name brand metal particle tapes. The premium, standard, etc. designators are marketing terms and are not very reliable to indicate actual tape quality.

The concern with choosing a tape for digital video purposes is not noise so much as longevity and compatible tape formulation. Digital8 systems are designed to record most accurately on metal particle tapes. Formerly MP's were only available when labelled as Hi8 or Digital8 but this has now changed and almost all 8mm tapes are metal particle formulations as well.

You should archive your recordings at SP recording speed because LP may be difficult to playback on a different machine because of minute variations if the tape path alignment.

Also, longer tapes are available under Digital8 labels than Hi8 or 8mm. The 90/135 Digital8 tapes will go 90 minutes in SP vs. the 60 minutes that a Hi8/8mm 120/180 tape will run in a Digital8 machine.

What is a good brand of digital camcorder thats under $500?

Q. I am looking to purchase a camcorder for a vacation and would like to know if anyone has had any experiances with Mini DV and/or Hard Drive camcorders. Anything you can provide as far as what to look for and what to avoid would be appreciated. I would like to spend under $500. Thanks in advance.

A. I've always bought cannon and have been pleased with them as well as others i know who've bought them.

I would suggest Mini DV. Cannon usually has three ZR models for under 400. Each one is roughly the same with just a few differences between each one.

Which is the better HDD camcorder, the Sony SR82 or SR42?

Q. I'm looking for a camcorder to make amateur films with. I'd like to know if the above-mentioned are decent camcorders, or do I have to expend more money to make better-looking films? My price range falls between $400-600 dollars, and I know that the REALLY good camcorders range in the thousands.

A. I would think that if you are willing to spend $400-$600 you can get a little bit better video quality than the SR42.

Prices of camcorders have been falling. You can find a new SR200 for under $600 nowadays on ebay. I would say either the SR82 or the SR200 would be good choices.

Shop around and you will find yourself a good deal. Just be careful to check out the reputation of any seller or website you buy from. There are some websites that advertise on Google that are total scams. Good thing I looked into them before I bought. You place the order and tell you the price on the website didn't include the battery, lenses, cables, etc. and that there is a 15% restocking fee if you cancel. In the end you end up paying over retail. Try ebay though. At least there you have have the seller's ratings just a click away.

what is a good camera that has a built in handle and shotgun mic?
Q. i can only spend about 600 dollars. i also need a fisheye so like 500 dollars please

A. There is none.

The camcorder you get must have threads to mount a lens. There must be a "Lens Filter Diameter" specification (likely around 30mm in your price range).

Add a handle like a GlideCam stuntbar or Scorpion or Opteka XGrip.

Is it quicker to use a multiplexer for video files?

Q. I need to change the container of my camcorder videos. The video stream is H.264 and the audio stream is AAC. I want to be able to play the videos on my PS3 but I can't because my camcorder outputs the videos with a .MOV extension.

A. So... you told us what the video container is - but you did not tell us what "container" you want to use.

MPEG Streamclip from www.squared5.com should be able to transcode to an AVC format that is BluRay compatible. Lots of other formats to choose from, too.

HandBrake from www.handbrake.fr is another useful transcoder.

I don't know why you would want a multiplexer... the video and audio are already combined in the MOV file.

Is there a way to get a live feed from a TV and watch it on a camcorder?
Q. Everyone is wanting to know how to watch videos on a TV that are stored on their camcorder. I want to know the opposite. Is there any way to get a live video stream from a TV and see it through your camcorder screen?
Ok, maybe a TV doesn't make sense. How about a borescope then? Can I get a live feed from a borescope and take still pictures using a camcorder?

A. No. And why would anyone want to do that. The other way makes sense, watch your own movies on the TV. Why wouldn't you just watch the TV? If you're trying to record it, just get a VCR/DVD recorder.

We had Christmas at my parents house today. My parents got my husband...?

Q. a Sony camcorder, a Tommy billfold with $300.00 in it, A Bose radio and leather rolling luggage.

I got two bars of soap ( I swear ), two crystal bowls that my mom has had forever (hello dust), some ice cream bowls (fifty cents), Estee Lauder Christmas Makeup package (which was good, except as soon as I opened it she said,"Let me see if I like any of the colors. I may want some", and a knockoff Coach purse that she paid no more than $50.00 for. I even told her, "mom, this is fake" and she goes, "no, it's one of the new ones.

I wanted to cry. Am I being a big baby and should I just let it go or should I be super Pi$$ed? I kinda got over it a few hours later. But thinking of it ticks me off.

A. Yep, you're being a big baby. He will probably take you out with at least part of that $300, he will be filming you (and you him) with the camcorder, you'll listen to the Bose radio and eventually use the luggage. I doubt you'll use the billfold, so that one is all his.

It sounds like you felt slighted and loved at least $500 less than they love your husband. Next year ask your parents to get you gifts as a couple, and if they insist on getting you something for you individually, limit it to one item. Unless they give him a brand new car and give you a $2 keychain, this should feel much more equitable to you.

And it's nice they like your husband so darned much!

Can you help me find best camcorder for my mom, around 300 bucks? See details please.?
Q. I am trying to find the perfect camcorder for my 60 something yr old mom. She has been using an old video recorder from the 90's (a compact VHS with 20x zoom and image stabilizer...she was GREAT with it, but it has become pretty much obsolete). It can't be more than say 320 dollars (less would be nice...I saved up and have tax refund money). It would have to have stabilization for shaky hands. It would have to work on my laptop, which has windows vista. At least 35x optical zoom. Must work with SD card (I don't know what that is, but ironically, my mom DOES and has told me what she needs). It can have DVD or not. It must have light (as in flashbulb...I don't know the current technological word) so she can take pictures and video of a black cat in a dark room (LOL...that's her baby kitty). It would be nice to have ability to use flash drive (removable USB drive thingee you put on a keychain and carry around). It would seem to me that all camcorders would be able to also take still pictures (???) but if not, that's another thing she would definitely want.

I am sorry I am just now myself learning some of the vocabulary...it all is very confusing, to say the least!!! The technobabble I've run into in my searches so far has my head spinning!

Those are about the main points I can THINK of. I appreciate any advice!

A. If it has to have SD card, go with Panasonic. Sony camcorders uses Memory Stick.

Panasonic has a wide range of camcorders that will fit your need and budget. Easiest thing to do is go to your local electronic store and talk to a sales associate.

Features to look for:
Recording media. Either tape, DVD or hard drive. DVD might be easiest for your mom. Just record and play in any DVD player.
Most has decent zoom, just find one that you want.
Almost all has imagine stabilization.
Hooking up to your laptop. If it is a DVD then it is ready to play right off the disc. If you're looking for video editing, go with mini DV Tapes and find a camcorder that has firewire hook up, your laptop must have firewire too. I don't think DVD camcorders have firewire, you'd be lucky finding one.
SD is Secure Digital memory card for capturing digital images. Most camcorders also have built in digital cameras. If it does, it also comes with a USB port (this is not firewire). The USB hooks up to your USB port to transfer the images, not video.
Some, not all camcorders have built in light. Find one that has.

Make a list before heading off to the store so you'll know what to look for. It is easy to over look something you want once you start shopping. Camcorders have become cheaper now, so for $320 you'll have no problems finding something you like. Good luck!

Should I upgrade to the xbox 360 slim? or should a buy a 3ds instead?

Q. I already have the xbox 360 arcade system and I never brought a hard drive for it and the slim model does look good. I also like portable gaming and I'm in college and can play the 3ds in between my classes. I was also thinking about the ps3 but for $250 that is to much! And I could just buy a blu-ray player if I really want which at the moment I don't so any advice is good advice so thanks :)

A. The X Box 720 is coming out in 2013.

So You shouldn't get another X Box until 2013.

So You should get the 3DS

Because you can play music (even with the system close)

You can LOWER the VOLUME of 3D

You can also turn the 3D OFF Completely

And 3D is good for working out your eye muscles & brain to keep them in shape as shown in this link:

http://www.aoa.org/x17309.xml

The Nintendo 3DS has downloadable 3D Music videos from today's American music artist which I have already downloaded the 3 free 3D Music Videos to watch anywhere and the 3DS has 3D "Blue Man Group" video and College Humor (in 3D) with the FREE "Nintendo Video" App that you can download (but its 4 3D Videos at a time and they replace them once in a while) and you can download cheap downloadable 3D Apps & 3D games costing from 99 cents to $5.99 and the Nintendo 3DS also has FREE downloadable 3D Apps & 3D Games, which I have already downloaded 3 Free 3D Apps and I have downloaded 2 Free 3D Games and the 3DS has a 3D Camera and I have already used the 3DS 3D Camera to take 3D photos and I have uploaded some of my 3D footage online using the Nintendo 3DS's Web Browser to upload my 3D footage online and I have used my 3DS Web Browser to also download other peoples 3D footage from the Internet on my 3DS Web Browser and I have view all sorts of 3D content on 3D Websites online on my 3DS's Web Browser and I have use my 3DS 3D Camera to play 3D Augmented Reality games as well and it's all in 3D without the Glasses using the 3DS 3D Camera and It has beautiful 3D HD graphics that equal to that of a 3D HD version of Wii Graphics and I have Streamed 3D Videos Online on my 3DS in the eShop and I have also Watch 3D Trailers for upcoming 3D movies coming to Theaters in 3D and I have done all of this in 3D Without the Glasses

The 3DS with a Wi-Fi Update can RECORD 3D Videos in 60 fps (unlike other camcorders, that only Record in 2D Only and in up to 30 fps only)

So you can pay $169 for a Nintendo 3DS and buy the greatest Games ever & all in 3D Without the Glasses like Cave Story 3D & Kid Icarus & Super Mario 3D Land & Mario Kart 7 using the MOTION SENSORS to play the game like if you were turning a real steering wheel to turn the Kart left & right and also play such other 8 GB 3D Games like TheatRhytem Final Fantasy & Kingdom Hearts 3D & Metal Gear Solid: Snake Eater 3D & Crush 3D and Shinobi & Animal Crossing & Rodea the Sky Soldier & Michael Jackson: the Experience 3D & Ridge Racer 3D & Super Street Fighter 4 3D & Monster Hunter 4 & Golden Sun 4 & Star Fox 3D & Zelda 3D & Sonic Generations 3D & Tetris 3D & Resident Evil: Revelations & Tales of the Abyss 3D & Tekken 3D which also has the 3D Movie Tekken the Movie 3D in it to watch and also play other 8 GB 3D HD games as Spider Man 3D and 100% of the 3DS games are in HD 3D Without the Glasses

And the 3DS pixel density is MUCH sharper than an average HD TV

They're making Angry Birds 3D as a downloadable game

And the 3DS has DLC (Downloadable Content) like Xbox Live for a bunch of 3DS games to add content to the game later on for Free

1 of the Free 3D Apps I have downloaded was Netflix

And Netflix is getting 3D Movies in the next few months, so for $169 you can watch 3D movies on the free Netflix App on the 3DS in 3D Without the Glasses

And 100% of the people who have said that they get headaches from 3D, have said that after up to 1 week of using the 3DS they NO LONGER get headaches anymore and that they now play with the 3D all the way up 100% all the time, non-stop

But I have never had any problem with the 3D at all, but each person has a different experience with the 3D ON during the first week

You can now pay to download 3D Videos on the 3DS

The 3DS is getting Hulu Plus before the end of this year (2011) as a Free downloadable App and Hulu already has 3D Content

and you can check this Link below for more 3DS Games:

And there are such great cheap downloadable games from the eShop as:

Sakura Samurai: Art of the Sword

Dillon's Rolling Western

Pushmo

Pyramids

And here are the 2D Resolutions:

Wii = 640

3DS = 800

And here are the Motion Sensors:

Wii = 1 Axis

3DS = 3 Axis

And here are the Frame Rates (Frames Per Second):

X Box 360 Slim = 30 fps

3DS = 60 fps

And the 3DS Wireless is 2.4 GHz.

And here are the Audio's:

X Box 360 Slim = 5.1 Surround Sound

3DS = 7.1 Surround Sound

And the 3DS has way more better graphics than the Wii as shown in this Link Here:

Does the nintendo 3ds have ps3/360 graphics?
Q. I want to get one for christmas, are the graphics really good as in a console good

A. Near PS3 Graphics:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=aVETRohXnrg

And here are the 2D Resolutions:

Wii = 640

3DS = 800

And here are the Motion Sensors:

And the 3DS has a 512 MHz Micro Processor.

And the 3DS Wireless is 2.4 GHz.

And the 3DS has a WAY MUCH sharper pixel density than the average HD TV.

And with the 3DS you can play music (even with the system close).

You can LOWER the VOLUME of 3D so it does NOT give you headaches for the first time in your life (if you're the kind of person to ever get headaches from 3D, otherwise just turn the 3D all the way up).

And you can also turn the 3D OFF Completely.

What do you recomend is a good camcorder with night vision?

Q. I'm looking for a camcorder with good night vision to be able to set up on the back of my house to be able to look into my wooded backyard. It's more for entertainment just to see what kind of animals are out there so I'd prefer it to be outdoor model but doesn't have to be. I could take it inside when not in use, I guess. I prefer to keep it under $100. I just want something decent with good quality but not expensive.

A. I would consider Vivitar Mini DV Camcorder (DVR-510) with 2GB Internal Storage, Night Vision - Black

Infraraed Night Vision
Web Camera
SD Card Reader
Waterproof Casing

What is a good quality underwater camcorder?
Q. I need something to film underwater with. It'll be mostly used in pools so not very deep at all. I need something that is actually waterproof and works with Mac computers. It would be nice if it wasn't terrible quality either. Fairly cheep would be nice but quality really matters over price. I really need it to work underwater and not break. It would be nice if it was able to film out of water as well. Any ideas?? I check on amazon and there were so many mixed reviews for everything I'm not sure who to believe.

A. http://www.indymogul.com/backyardfx/episode/BFX_20101220/affordable-underwater-camera-rig-diy
Go make yourself one of these, not that hard to make, then any camcorder would work, like this one would, shoots better video than any HD camcorder ever could and won't cost you Big bucks for the computer upgrade you will need when you purchase a HD camcorder - http://www.usa.canon.com/cusa/consumer/products/camcorders/consumer_camcorders/zr960

Do I need a wide angle lense for my prosumer camcorder?

Q. I am looking at prosumer camcorders from sony, canon, jvc, red, panasonic, and any other I can find.

Do some brands have wider angles then others?

To make movies and documentaries do you have to film in wide angle? I mean I will be doing it in HD and aren't all films and tv's formatted mainly to widescreen nowadays? Is wide angle the same as wide screen?

Do I need a wide angle lens or is stock wide enough?

A. Wide angle lenses and wide screen (16:9) aspect ratio are mutually exclusive.

If the camcorder's field of view does not capture enough of a space - and you cannot pull the camera back any more - then use of a wide angle lens can increase the camera's field of view. There is a building going up in my city. From across the street, the entire width of the building won't fit in my camera's field of view - by using a 0.7x wide angle lens add-on, nearly the entire width of the construction project fits so I can pretty much eliminate having to pan the camera. When you have a wider angle, the more distortion you will notice on the captured video. At the extreme, there are fisheye lenses commonly used for skateboard videos... These will be in the 0.3x or 0.4x range.

The opposite will be use of a tele-lens. I occasionaly use a 2x tele lens when the built-in optical zoom is not enough to zoom into what I want.

If you are capturing high definition video, that, by definition is widescreen. All that means is the aspect ration is 16:9 rather than the more square 4:3 or older standard definition televisions.

Whether you need/want a wide angle lense will depend on the shot you are trying to achieve.

Looking for a good prosumer Camcorder but not too pricey?
Q. Hey there,
My friends and I are going to start a high-quality web show for reviewing video games.
We are looking for a prosumer camcorder that shoots high-end video.

What would you recommend for under 800$?

A. JVC Everio GZHD7 would offer a high level of manual controls since we first spent some time with the HD7 at CES in January. The big question has been whether the camcorder would perform up to its billing. The HD7 records video using a new flavor of MPEG-2 compression that wanders as high as 30 Mbps in FHD ("Full HD" 1920 x 1080) mode. That led us to wonder whether that venerable HDV format had finally met its match. As it turns out, video performance is not the reason to buy the JVC GZ-HD7 but it remains one of the years most intriguing models.

What is the best video camera each one of these companies have to offer: Sony, Panasonic, JVC, Canon, Aipteck?

Q. I am particularly interested in picture quality (nothing else). Especially the pixel count and perhaps the speed at which it records which will affect the quality when it is put into slow motion.

A. Well, you can rule out Aiptek... they only make low-quality toy camcorders.

Pixel count isn't that important for video in camcorders, because there are only a few options, and they're tied to the standards. Standard definition camcorders record at 720x480 (NTSC) or 720x576 (PAL), regardless of the size of the sensor in pixels (many consumer camcorders have many pixels, to improve color and give you a better digital still camera function). HD camcorders recorder at either 1280x720, 1440x1080, or 1920x1080 (the latter only on tapeless camcorders).

Very few camcorders have any sort of slow motion mode. You get slow motion when you shoot at one rate (in frames per second) and replay that slower.. but if you replay much below 24 fps, the video will look jerky. So faster fps = better slo-mo. And you will find, in the few cameras that do slo-mo at a consumer price, the pixel count does start to drop.

Some pro models offer full video at 60fps, which lest you do 1/2 rate slo-mo at full video quality, as long as your flash cards hold out. But unless you're thinking of spending $5000 or more, this is not for you.

But don't fret... 60fps is starting to enter the consumer world. One such option is the Sanyo Xacti 1010. This is an HD camcorder that records in MPEG-4 on flash. It's not the absolute best quality around, but it's decent. And it can record at 720p (1280x720) at a full 60fps. This is under $700 online.

To go beyond that on a consumer budget, there are a few weird choices. Sony offers a very short burst high-speed mode on some of their camcorders. They call this "Smooth Slow" recording mode, and it can go to 120fps-200fps, depending on the camera model. This is supported in both pro/prosumer (HVR-V1, HVR-Z7, others) and consumer (HDR-CX7, HDR-HC3, others) models. This is always at a much lower resolution, good for YouTube but little else. And you're limited to bursts of about 3 seconds real-time.

Another interesting option isn't a camcorder at all, but Casio's new digital still camera, the Exlim Pro EX-F1 (about $1000) http://www.exilim.com/intl/ex_f1/. Most digital still cameras these days have a video mode, but it's usually at best standard-def at 30fps, maybe a tad better. But the EX-F1 has several high-frame rate video modes. It can actually shoot near SD-quality (512 384) at 300 fps, 432192 at 600 fps, or 33696 at 1200 fps.. it also does standard High-def. And this is continuous, up to memory or file limits, not just short bursts. If you're really serious about high-speed filming on a consumer budget, this is your best bet.

digital camera good enough for movie making?
Q. im looking to get a digital camera 5000 or under to start a hobby and movie making. i was thinking the Canon EOS 5D Mark III would be a nice purchase? would there be something better, tips or pointers?

A. For movie making specifically skip a DSLR altogether. Look into the Sony NEX FS100UK with a Super 35mm sensor or a similar camera in that price range. You will need to add a lens but you can get an 11x zoom lens from Sony with the camera for an additional $600. You can make a movie with a $109 Canon A1300 but you won't get "Hollywood" quality - for that be prepared to spend even more than $5,000 - closer to $10,000 and more for all the stuff you will need to go with it - software, lighting, a computer with huge hard drives, etc.

The person who said Canon 5D Mk III is better for video might not know that the Nikon D800 has superior autofocus to the Mk III. Nikon has finally caught up. You will need to buy extra accessories to do video so by the time you add it all in you might have spent just as much as buying a video camera. You are also limited to 4 GB file sizes in a DSLR due to trade tariffs (I think) so if you want to make a video longer than 30 minutes that is not interrupted you need to go with a camcorder anyway.

What type of camcorder can i use to recorded in good video quality?

Q. ok so i have a band named All But The Fallen! and so i wanted to recored a type of music video for a song that we wrote but i have had lots of diffent camcorders but the video quality is bad and sometimes you cant understand what were saying and so i i decide tp ask here and thanks

A. Your recording a band, just pointing a camcorder at yourselves will not produce a very good video. What you need to do is find out if any of those camcorder have a MIC jack. If so hook something like this up - http://asimplelife.ca/boss.html, run the feed out to the MIC jack on that camcorder. Then get several friends to man the other camcorders and make your self a good video. The camcorder with the audio feed going into it is your audio track, all the video from all the other camcorders is bonus. Have fun doing a multi camera edit.

Using what you see on my site, I have recorded audio from one band, many renditions of that band, many different members of that band, many times. I simple run wires from the system they have, which is capturing the microphones and electric guitars, and run 3 microphones to the drummer and record sometimes with a camcorder, but due to location and atmosphere where I record this, it is easier to use a Digital Audio Recorder to capture the audio.

Have Fun.

How good is the video quality of the Canon Powershot SX10 IS?
Q. Should I just buy a digital camera AND a camcorder? Or is the video quality of the SX10 good enough to replace a camcorder? What gigabyte of SDHC card would be appropriate for shooting videos?

A. Not any P&S camera can match the quality found on the most modest camcorder and certainly none of the features found on camcorders.

The video feature on P&S cameras are just a little marketing feature, never meant to replace a true video camera

If your goal is to make video shorts of other homegrown videos, look to camcorders made by Canon, Panasonic, JVC or Sony

What Video Capture Software can I use to capture video to my computer from my Mini DV camcorder?

Q. I have a Sony camcorder that uses Mini DV for storage and I want to save my home videos to my computer. I have the USB cable for it, but I need a software to capture my videos to a standard MPG or MP4 format.

A. You can capture the video using Windows Movie Maker, but regardless of which app you use you should capture the video via firewire rather than USB - if your PC hasn't already got one you'll need to install a firewire card. They're cheap, easy to install and readily available. You'll also need a firewire cable.

Once everything's connected you can capture and edit the video with Windows Movie Maker (it should already be on your PC) and save it as DV-AVI (it's under Save on My Computer, Best quality show more choices, Other settings) before converting it to your final format.

"standard MPG or MP4 format" covers a lot of possibilities, from MPEG-1 to H.264, but Super should be able to do what you want. Commercial editors will give you a better choice of output formats, so the conversion shouldn't be necessary. If you want to make a DVD, have a look at DVD Flick.

How do you get videos recorded on a mini dv camcorder on to a computer or dvd or anything like that?
Q. I have a JVC camcorder, that records to mini dv tapes, and I was wondering how to get the videos on to the computer? or a dvd?

A. a miniDV vcam must be DV~Firewire400**-connected to computer to upload video thru video editing* or capture application while vcam is ON PLAYBACK. Most (digital) tape vcams have 4-pin DV ports; before cable purchase** check pc or mac for DV port {VCAM@4-pin=>firewireCABLE=>PC@4/ 6-pin?}. If none, install firewire card: pci for desktop or pcmcia / express for laptop.

What HD camcorders can take photos while recording videos?
Q. I have a JVC Everio GZ-MS230 camcorder, and I love it. I've had it for two years, and the main feature I love is that it can take images while recording. Eventually, I'm going to upgrade, since I want an HD camcorder. The quality on this one is good, but I'd really like an HD one, since I film and take photos of concerts.
So, which HD camcorders can take photos while recording? Thank you c:

A. Any in the Sony HDR consumer camcorder series.

Any in the Canon HF series.

In either case, you need to press the "Photo" button while video is being recorded. Chances the camcorder will shake when you do this is very high. Many of these camcorders come with a wireless remote that has a "Photo" button, but the wireless remote needs to be able to see the front of the camcorder. This is not necessarily convenient, but can work. Consumer grade camcorders usually do not have a wired remote - though the upper end of the Sony consumer cams sometimes do.

My Sony HDR-HC1 has a LANC port to which I connect a wired remote. One of the buttons on the wired remote is "Photo" (along with zoom, focus and power buttons). Since I am not touching the camcorder when the photo button is pushed, there is no camera shake.

Once you set a budget, you'll see what fits - and understand what features will be available from the different manufacturers.

How to burn camcorder video to Blu-ray?

Q. Some camcorder video I want to transfer to Blu-ray, but diffciult comes because I don't konw the way of burning Blu-ray disc.

A. If you don't have a BluRay burner and you don't have a BluRay disc, you won't be able to burn the BluRay DVD.

You can burn h.264/AVC files from the video editor to a regular single layer or double layer blank DVD that willplayback in a BluRay player or PS3... but you did not tell us which computer, which video editor or anything else about your video editing environment.

What is a camcorder with good image quality and a good mic, not too expensive.?

Q. Don't give me an over priced camera, i'm only making videos for youtube and a couple of short movies, so its no big deal.
I'm also using mac but i don't really mind having to covert each video.

A. The best camcorder with the best audio capture ability is a camcorder that has a MIC port.
Consumer level HD camcorders have 4 problems. 1) Blurry, fuzzy, out of focus areas closely around people in videos taken by consumer level HD camcorders. 2) Any movement, even a wave or lifting an arm, while in front of a recording consumer level HD camcorder, results in screen ghosts and artifacts being left on the video track, following the movement. Makes for bad video, sports videos are unwatchable. 3) These Consumer level HD camcorders all have a habit of the transferred to computer files are something you need to convert, thus losing your HD quality, to work with your editing software. 4) Mandatory maximum record times - 1 hour, 30 minutes, 8 minutes, 3 minutes four different times advertised as maximum record time for some consumer level HD camcorders. No event I have ever been to is that short. Either take multiple camcorders or pack up with out getting the end of the event on video. Not to mention, but the computer you upload your HD files to jas to have at least a 1 GB video card and a separate Audio card that can support Direct X 9 technology, you normal every day computer has massive troubles with HD video. Consumer level HD camcorders interpolate the video. This means they take one frame, make up the next 4 or 5 frames, take a frame and repeat this, over and over, for the remainder of the video, every video it takes is like this. With a MiniDV tape camcorder, record 60 or 90 minutes ( camcorder settings), 90 seconds or less to change a tape and record for 60 or 90 more and repeat till you run out of tapes.

You can get a Canon ZR960 for $250. It is a MiniDV tape camcorder, has a MIC jack. You will need a Firewire (IEEE1394) card ($25 to 30) for the computer and a Firewire cable (less than 10) to be able to transfer video to your computer. To say this is not HD, think about this. It would cost in excess of $3500 to get a HD camcorder that could equal the video Quality of a $250 Canon MiniDV tape camcorder.

http://www.canon.co.uk/For_Home/Product_Finder/Camcorders/High_Definition_HD/HV30/index.aspx

I used to make a daily Vloog and post it to youtube. I do that no more. Since the channel layout redesign in early March, I, like many others, abandoned youtube for other sites. Protests are going on, several to be exact. But anyway, this is what I used to capture audio - http://asimplelife.ca/boss.html I used my 3 Canon ZR MiniDV tape camcorders to shoot all my Vlogg material, then use my NLE, Pinnacle Studio 14 Ultimate to edit and make into a MPEG 2 1080P file for upload to youtube. It worked seamlessly and I had no issues whatsoever doing it that way. These days, my Vlogg, shot, edited and saved the same way is uploaded to Face Book.

Is there something that can transfer mini DV & tapes to DVD?
Q. I have mini dvs & those little tapes from my camcorders. Is there a way to put those onto dvd? Thanks.

A. Little bit of confusion in your question Ashley - mini DV is the very small tapes - do you mean that as well as tapes you have some mini DVDs ?

Dealing with the miniDV tapes - You will find a read of this article very useful and informative :-

http://phpbb.ulead.com.tw/EN/viewtopic.php?t=13421

The software being used is Ulead VideoStudio - you can download a free trial to see if it works for you from :-

http://www.ulead.com/vs/runme.htm

or

http://www.ulead.co.uk/vs/runme.htm

If you also have the mini DVDs then do it this way

Use a programme such as Ulead VideoStudio - you take the mini-disc out of your camcorder and put it into the DVD tray of your PC making sure it sits centrally in the little depression made for it. You may have to 'finalise' the mini DVD your camera manual will tell you how to do that - but you should note that once a DVD is finalised you cannot record any more video on it.

Inside VideoStudio you select "Insert DVD" and point the programme at the DVD and follow the prompts and the video is copied from the disc into the timeline of VideoStudio so that you can edit it - add lots of different videos together - add titles/music/narration - make a file that you can e-mail or upload to 'Youtube' etc. and finally burn to a full size DVD to play in a standard player.

You can add together videos from tape and miniDVD within the one programme

Full details and a one month free trial of VideoStudio from :-

What is the longest lasting battery i can get for my camcorder?

Q. It's the Kodak playsport Zx3. I've seen many different batteries for it, but don't know which one provides the longest use. I need help from an expert. Please be descriptive, I want to know exactly the details that make it the best. This camcorder takes great quality videos, it just barely lasts any time, less than an hour. More like half an hour, even though some say it is standard for the battery to last about an hour. I really am looking for a big change.

A. there is only one correct battery for a Playsport Zx3 and that is the KLIC7004. my experience is the Kodak brand battery works best, i have tried internet generic replacements and tossed them out. you should be able to get the Kodak battery at Walmart or photo stores.

What is the best store to buy a Flip video Camcorder?
Q. I was at Walmart and I saw the 60 Minute one for $129. But I don't know if there is a better buy for it?

A. Yes there is! My wife just found a free online shopping widget and we have found almost all of our electronics and gadgets for cheaper then even walmart or the typical google search. You should definately check the price with this widget first, I usually save about 30-40% using it. Can I bring my camera to a concert?

Q. I bought tickets to go to a concert in 2013 and I printed out my tickets and on it it says: No cameras/recorders. And by asking if I can bring my camera I'm not trying to make it irrelevant, but don't people bring their cameras to concerts all the time?
It's at the PNC Arena in Raleigh, NC & the concert is for One Direction.

What will happen if I do bring my camera?
Any idea?

A. For some concerts, they do allow you to bring cameras/camcorders. It will say if it's allowed on the ticket. But in your situation, you're not allowed to because it says it on the ticket. You could sneak your camer in without getting caught(usually hard to do). But if you do sneak it in then you could take pictures and record the concert. But when/if you get caught, they'll kick you out of the concert.

i was wondering what would be a good camera or camcorder to film a music video?
Q. i would prefer 2013 and highest amount $500

A. If there will be any Actor or Camcorder movement during this music video, a Camcorder that records to Hard Drive or any form of digital disk, will not work and make and take terrible, un -editable videos.

I would use a MiniDV tape Camcorder, they have the best Video Quality available in the Consumer level Camcorder field.

What Would Be Good Camera For Time Lapses ?

Q. So i am 15 dont really have much money, and i was looking to get into time lapses. I have bee looking at hd video camcorders (professional grade, no best buy stuff), but i see that most people use large cameras with the interchangable lenses. Loking to get something in the 200-700 dollar range

A. Time lapse photography consists of of taking hundreds/thousands of photos and combining them in a video editor.

So you need both a camera and video software.

There are not that many cameras that can do time-lapse, especially in the compact camera range. A few that do are the Nikon P310, P330, P7700.

As well, some video cameras can also do time lapse, such as some GoPro Hero and Sony Action Cam. However, these cameras may or may not be suitable to your needs as they often have lens/optic issues preventing them from doing anything but the main job they were designed for.

Also, a few mirrorless cameras have this function - Nikon 1 does for instance.

And some DSLRs also have time-lapse functions. However, this is usually the mid-range cameras as not many entry level DSLRs have this function.

However, there is a 3rd party product on the market called an Intervalometer, which is basically a timer for time lapse. This will allow virtually any DSLR having a wired remote (with the proper cable) to be controlled for time lapse.

Realize though that not all DSLRs have wired remote capability. Some only have wireless (IR) remote - especially entry level DSLRs. At this time, there are not commercially available wireless remote intervalometers (although some people have built their own).

For instance, for some strange reason, the Nikon D3000 has a wireless but not wired remote capability. The Nikon D3100/D3200 has a wired, but not wireless remote capability.

Once you get your camera, you basically set it up on a tripod and select the number of photos you want, and the duration between photos. The best duration depends on the effect you wan to achieve. For instance, if you are looking for active scenes; people walking, etc. The best rate will be 10sec or less. But for scenery; clouds, etc. a 30sec~1min rate is better.

Realize though that some cameras - those with built-in timers - have a restriction as to the minimum duration you can have. This is because if you take too many photos too quickly, you might overheat the camera, and it can shut down. While you do not have this restriction with a 3rd party intervalometer, you could still shut the camera down by overheating.

Further, interval shooting uses up a lot of battery. You may want to consider an AC powered solution for the camera if you want to take a lengthy time-lapse movie. Virtually all Nikon cameras that have an interval timer can be AC powered with the addition of an expensive adapter ($100 or so).

Finally, with time lapse, you don't have to use the most resolution on your camera. You can cut down the resolution a lot, as video will mask many defects anyway, so the resolution often can be turned down. Turning down the resolution not only reduces battery usage (smaller files to write), but it also results in more manageable file sizes when it comes to combining the photos.

And when you have your entire stack of photos, you must combine them. If you have Windows, you can use Windows Movie Maker, or if you have a MAC, iMovie will work (they are both included free with your OS). However, they are restricted to about 10 frames per second, and for time lapse, you will want closer to 20 frames per second, which might mean you will have to buy a better video editor. But WMM or iMovie will at least get you started.

Here is a sample of one of the first time lapses I did with a Nikon P7000 compact camera (with a built in time lapse function) and processed in Windows Movie Maker. You can see that it is a bit jerky, due to the maximum 10 frames per second Windows Movie Maker is capable of.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7ZiivbVASrw&list=UUcxUAeQlPzZR8KLHAJL8Mrw&index=16

The "later that day" part of the video was when I had to change batteries. An AC powered adapter would have helped here.

What is the best digital professional video camera for my budget?
Q. I'm an amateur film maker and will be making my first full length documentary soon. Me and four friends are traveling the country making and selling music and art, to explain in detail would take far too long.

My budgets is under 1000 dollars. The camera must be 1080p, and digital. I've searched and searched and I haven't found the video camera that's right for me. I need the camera to have sharp image, good zoom, and be good enough for a documentary to look great. The budget also will include batteries, sd cards, and lighting also a tripod.

Any help is appreciated. Please help me!

Thanks.

A. My definition of "professional video camera":
Lens filter diameter 65mm - preferably larger. 72mm is common.
Imaging chip 3CCD or 3CMOA array 1/3" or larger or APS-C sized single imaging chip.
XLR connectors for external mic connectivity.

If your definition of "professional video camera" is different from mine, please tell us your definition...

The least expensive camcorders - of which I am aware - that meets these requirements are:
Sony HVR-Z5
Sony NEX EA50UH
Canon XF300

The Z5 and XF300 have a fixed lens, so there is no additional expense. The NEX EA50UH comes with an e-mount lens, so there is no additional expense. A decent tripod will be in the $200 range.

A battery comes with each of the above - an additional, high capacity, rechargeable, battery from the camcorder manufacturer is strongly recommended. Budget $150. SD cards are inexpensive, but figure $80 for a couple of 32 gig high-speed class 10 cards. Video lighting from an ED video light for $200 or a more complex set up for $2,000 or more. We can stay with the low end... You forgot external mics... assume $300 - there is no single best mic - and we have not budgeted for anything wireless. Just these accessories came up to over $700. That means you have less than $300 for your camcorder. This is the entry level for consumer-grade camcorders. Like the Canon HF R400 (add in a XLR adapter from juicedLink or BeachTek for XLR mics).

What you *want* does not exist - and this may be the reason you cannot find what you *want*. You have a choice: Increase your budget or decrease your requirements.

And we have not event looked into a computer upgrade for storage and editing of the captured video. A decent video editor - Sony Vegas, Adobe Premiere, Final Cut... among others - costs and takes time to learn to use.

Someone who knows a really good camcorder That aren't too expensive ?
Q. I blog a lot and i'm gonna start video blogging so i need a really good camcorder but That is pretty cheap.. Someone who have tips ?
What Do you know about this One ? :

Sony Handycam HDR - CX190E

A. it's all personal preff and what your budget is.

canon has a more photo, warmer look.

sony can be a little confusing to use but gets the job done.

others i wouldn't fancy too much.

even with the warm look, if you use an editing software, you can simply look into COLOUR CORRECTION that i'm sure you'd end up using

most important thing aside from your budget, looking into the details of the cam
what it films in: 1980-1440 or 1080-720 or 680-480(screen size)
50p 60i 30p 24p. the higher thee pixel the better the quality. (p is progressive, i is interlaced which isn't really full high definition)
get to know about how well the focus is. manual/auto
as well, what a lot of people forget, is how well it films in low light (i.e night time or a dark area) can always purchase a light for the cam.

hope this helps.
i know i didn't mention any cams, since i don't know your budget i'll allow you to look at decide on your own. it will be YOUR cam

How can I get my Mac to recognize my Panasonic Camcorder?

Q. I have a Panasonic SDR H60 camcorder and Mac OS X 10.4.11 computer. I use iMovie '08. I have been able to upload video from the camera directly to iMovie before, but now I can't. My dad used the camera on his PC with the software provided with the camera, and I'm wondering it that may have messed up the ability of the camera to work with the Mac. How can I get the camera to be recognized by iMovie again?

A. Make sure the camera is in playback mode.

How can I connect my Sony camcorder to my mac computer?
Q. When I connect my Sony Dcr-Trv11 camcorder to my mac via firewire, the mac does not recognize it. I have an imac osx tiger and imovie. I have found places online that say that this is possible, but I have had no luck yet. does anyone have any suggestions? thanks

A. The Sony DCR-TRV11 camcorder is miniDV tape based.

What are you expecing the Mac to do? Nothing will automatically "pop up".

Connecting a 4-pin to 6-pin firewire cable to the camcorder's DV port and the Mac's firewire port - with the camcorder in "Play" or "VCR" mode, launch iMovie,
Name the project,
select the video project destination folder,
select DV (presuming you captured the video in 4:3 standard definition mode - select DV widescreen if the video was captured in that mode.
Create.
The iMovie Import screen should appear.

You did not tell us which Mac. It is possible that the Firewire port is inactive. System Preferences: Network: Port Status. Be sure there is a check mark in the firewire box.

It is also possble that the firewire cable or the camcordeer's firewire port is bad.

I'm looking for a hard drive camcorder with an external mic jack?

Q. I am a high school basketball coach and I want a camcorder that records on a hard drive and I want to patch a radio into a external mic jack or an audio in jack. What are my choices for brands and prices??Thanks.

A. To answer your question directly:
Sony HDR-SR11, HDR-SR12
Panasonic *might* have one or two; Canon has none.

Because the crowd noise and possibility of a band or other loud audio, hard disc drive based camcorders are not recommended for your stated environment. The vibration from that loud audio can cause the hard drive heads to park and no video will be recorded. This is a known problem with hard drive based camcorders. So is high altitude, but we won't go there at the moment...

Flash memory and miniDV tape based camcorders do not have this problem with vibration. For standard definition, flash memory, the Canon FS10, FS11 and FS100 have a mic jack; Flash memory camcorders save to the same file formats used by hard drive camcorders. For high definition or standard def miniDV tape, the Canon HV20 and Sony HDR-HC9 meet your requirements. These are all "least expensive" - the issue is getting amic jack - most camcorders do not have this. There are more cameras that cost more that have audio-in capabilities.

For prices, there are two kinds - the ones you can buy and know you will get what you pay for or potential scams. Do comparison pricing - if the price looks too good to be true, it probably is. I have found B&H Photo and Adorama are reputable online dealers. Check at the CNET camcorder forum for horror stories on certain scam sites.

DVD camcorders are useless. Don't waste any time on them.

Any full HD cameras with an external mic jack?
Q. I've been looking for a 1080p camera/camcorder that has a mic jack to pick up better audio and cant seem to come up with a camera. Help would be appreciated. Thanks!

A. Canon Vixia HF R200

why do they recommend a tape or mini tape camcorders for beginner filmmakers instead of a hd camcorder ?
Q. i will be using the camcorder for filming videos for youtube and such..

A. MiniDV tape:
-Is cheap, easily additive storage, and it's an instant archive. For about $3, I can get an hour of tape. I can get as many as I need - no need to purchase more and more SD cards or hard drives. Also, as soon as I'm done shooting a tape, that's my archive. I don't necessarily NEED to back it up or erase it in order to "make more space" on the camera. Just pop in a new tape.

-Carries the highest-quality consumer formats. In standard definition, it is the ONLY consumer-level format that uses "intraframe" compression; that is, each frame is self-contained. It doesn't have to do calculations based on frames around it in order to "fill in" the content. "Interframe" compression carries much less information per frame, and instead relies on other frames from which to calculate the video data.

For years, I have sworn by tape for those reasons. Computers choked on heavily-compressed file formats, and it took a long time to transcode them to more editing-friendly formats. Quality of file-based formats was relatively low, with low data rates being used in camcorders. SD cards were ridiculously expensive. The time it took to properly work with file-based formats simply was not worth the effort.

That said, nowadays, I'm agreeing less and less that tape is THE format to hold onto. Many of the problems that people have had with file-based consumer camcorders are being alleviated. Computers are being built with more powerful processors and graphics cards, which more easily handle the calculations needed to play interframe formats like H.264. Flash memory is getting cheaper. Hard drives are getting bigger. Data rates of file-based formats are getting higher, which means increasing video quality. Video editing programs are being developed as 64-bit applications now - the big three players, Avid, Apple, and Adobe, now all have 64-bit versions of their flagship programs, which means better performance with these formats. And in a stunning trend, it's getting harder to find computers with FireWire ports, which are key for using DV tape, as computer manufacturers move to USB3. I'm still scratching my head over that one. Thunderbolt is coming soon, though...

Honestly, if I were to be buying a camera now, I'd be giving a really good, long look at some of the file-based cameras, namely those which use removable media like SDHC or SDXC cards. Storage is getting cheaper, computers are becoming more powerful, and the quality of these cameras is getting better and better. For long-term backups, Blu-Ray drives and discs are getting cheaper, as are, again, large hard drives.

It may be a good 4-5 years after people started saying it, but I am starting to believe that tape is finally on its last legs. There are still some great tape cameras out there, cameras like Canon's HV40 - but the gap between their benefits and those of file-based cameras is getting very, very narrow now.

Getting a camera for home use, I'd probably make the jump to a file-based format now. Maybe that's just me. However, for professional use, I'd look for a format like AVC-Intra, or a camera with SDI output, as those are the ways to keep intraframe compression options.

Why do professional camcorders use tapes and not hard drive?

Q. I am looking to buy a professional camcorder, and am just wondering why they all use tapes and not hard drives? Does using tapes offer better quality? Also, what is a good professional camcorder to buy?
I have a budget of about £18,000 for 5 cameras.

A. Your right, Tape based camcorders do produce a much higher quality video. Until you start to get into the higher end such as Red a basic camera would be around $30, 000 certainly out of my price range.

So us mortals have to use the best we can, its all down to compression, the more the video is compressed the less information in actually saved. Sure tape based video is compress but we are talking about the amount of compression, uncompressed video runs at about 85GB per hour, there are not many flash drive camcorders that can one hold this amount of data, two can handle the data transfer rate. Hard drive cameras are not much better obviously they can save/hold more.

If you watch outside broadcasts, you will see many tape based camcorders, even documentaries will use them. are you looking for a "professional" camcorder or a "prosumer" camcorder. the latter is more of a half way between the two, most people (unless you are a trained camera man) would opt for this type of camera, they give you the best of both worlds automatic features such as exposure and focus, but also to be able to use manual controls. the more you pay the better the quality but the less things there are to help you out.

You do not give a budget, but you would need to start at around $2500 minimum, then work upwards.

Canon, Sony make good quality equipment, but obviously other manufacturers do have cameras for that market.

Again with out a budget there is no point in suggesting a $3000 camera when you only want to pay $1000 or 500

RR

What are some of the best camcorders that can produce semi professional quality at a low price?
Q. I'm looking into buying a camcorder to make mini movies and just to have a little fun. I've seen HD camcorders and all sorts of camcorders that look nice but I'm not sure which ones give me the best bang for my buck. Could someone help send me in the right direction please?

A. Great news, as opposed to just a couple of years ago, you have some pretty great options. All depends on your budget.
For a decent budget, the canon 7D is an amazing camera for $1600 with a good lens. Its a VDSLR, which is a very new type of camcorder and has its own set of issues to deal with, but for a relatively cheap price you can capture amazing images, do some research about this type of cam before buying however- its not for everyone.
Next, go for a canon HV40 for about $700- or a used HV20 for about $200, both great consumer HD cams that if shot well can make some great images, the 40 is a little newer and fixes some issues with the older models, but the difference isn't huge.
Lastly, the Flip Camera, for about $120. A full HD cam the size of a cell phone, its becoming very popular with documentaries- I'm about to shoot part of a $2000 doc with one- great little cam in the right circumstances.
Those are my recommendations as I've used all of them, no matter what you pick, do some research to find out about each cameras strengths and limitations- you can't get everything you want for a cheap price. Check out hvxuser.com and hv20user.com for some good info.
Best of luck.
