Can a digital camera record little "films" too or would a digital camcorder be the better choice?

Q. I saw digicams for just around 50 pounds... and camcorders for about 100, so I was wondering... I'd love to record "moved pictures" as well and upload them on my computer.

A. Many, perhaps most, digital still cameras will record video. It can be good, if not necessarily great, but there are issues.

The cheaper digital still cameras record in the Motion JPEG (MJPEG) format, which is basically little different than making a "flip movie" of still JPEG images. They do this because the camera already uses JPEG for still photo storage, so there's no need for more expensive digital processing.

Generally, an MJPEG video recorded by a digital still camera is at a lower resolution, probably 640x480, sometimes a bit more or less as an option. The quality compares reasonably well to DV camcorders. The big problem with MJPEG is size... it can use up hundreds of megabytes per minute... so you can't fit much video on the camera. If you're keeping under the 10 minute YouTube limit, this may be ok for you... otherwise, it may be a problem. More advanced digital still cameras offer video-camera like compression, probably using some form of MPEG.

I have a Panasonic DMC-TZ5, which records in MJPEG, but does offer high definition recording in 720p (1280x720 at 30fps), so it can actually look better than DV, sometimes. Of course, this takes up significant space on a flash card... it limits videos to 2GB (even if you have a larger memory card), which means you get about 8 minutes of HD video in a single clip... up to 15 minutes if you record at a lower resolution. Of course, this is also a $300 camera, not a cheapie... and even at that, the video quality is no threat to an HD camcorder of most any type.

Aside from the video format, there may be other digital still camera issues when playing videocamera. Many of them cannot zoom while in recording mode... you have to stop, zoom, then start again (the Panasonic can zoom). Some are a bit touchy on the autofocus, largely because of nuances in how a camcorder does its autofocus versus how a still camera does... they still use the still camera focusing algorithms for video mode, and the video quality suffers a bit as a result (switching off autofocus may be an option, I've done this with the Panny).

Sound on consumer camcorders is bad enough, but most digital still cameras have abysmal sound. My Panasonic, for example, records in 8-bit mono... this is only really useful for synchronizing to another audio source (I sometimes use the Panny as a 3rd camcorder when I have my two HDV camcorders on tripods... I'm using those others, and/or a field recorder, to cover the audio), or possibly for YouTube videos.

You'll find the same issue going the other way... video cameras often offer digital still mode, but there will be quality issues. I took hundreds of photos on my Canon HD10 while on an extended backpacking trip. At about 3Mpixels, they're not too bad for 4"x6" snapshots, but you're not getting good enlargements from these. On the other hand, only one camera in the backpack was useful when walking 10-15km each day for two weeks.

Q. I need something to record talk presentations. What are the best options for good quality camcorders and microphones? I have a 700$ budget, so I am looking at a 500$ or less camcorder and maybe 100$ for a microphone and 100$ for a tripod.

A. You can go for Sony DCR-SX43 Standard Definition Flash Mem Camcorder which costs only $199.99 from thriftynickel.biz

Is it safe to record what is on a television screen with a camcorder?

Q. For example, I record video of the television screen, which is about 30 to 50 inches, using the camcorder. I am playing video games on the television screen, so I am trying to record the gameplay from a camcorder.I would like to know if excessive recording like this would hurt the camcorder's lenses in any way. Thank you!

A. Not a tv won't hurt the cam corder..however.. a microwave would...stay away from those things.
but there are cords and a program that you can purchase to hook your game system up straight to your computer and you can edit it together. the cam corder will make all the colors off and you'll see a lot of extra lines. Plus there will be a lot of shaking obviously.

Canon camcorders which can take lenses from still cameras?
Q. I am looking for a camcorder which can take lenses from a digital still camera, like a EF lenses of Canon. Any ideas?

A. I've never heard of one, and I'd be surprised if one exists. Camcorder chips are generally smaller than DSLR's so you'd be losing a lot of light.

I want to get started in filmmaking. What camcorder shall I get?

Q. Alright so I want to be an ammatuer filmmaker [im 15]. I already know how to edit videos and all that sutff. I know what editing software Im buying [pinnacle studios]. I just need a camera that has good video quality and when you record, it saves to the built in hardrive or something or maybe a minidvd if its not to complicated when uploading to the computer. Something easy and simple with good video quality. But I need a good camcorder ranging from $200-$350. I cant find any! Any suggestions?
I forgot to mention that I plan on making short films. 10-30 minutes. So I hope that adds.

A. I have a Sony DCR-SR82 that works really well. It's not high Def but more than likely with your budget that's not an option anyway. I belive I paid $600 for mine but they make one with a smaller hard drive that's a bit cheaper. My Costco also sold mine so it came with a solid return policy.

What's the best budget rig for a professional camcorder?
Q. I have a Panasonic AF100. I unfortunately blew most of my budget on the body and the lens. What's a well-built, sturdy rig I can buy for $150-$350? I know this budget is very restrictive, but I am looking for sturdy metal constructed rig that can support the weight of my camera. Most of the rigs I have seen in the price range look cheap and plastic-y.

A. Rig... Please define that...

For a tripod, look into something from Davis & Sanford.

For a shoulder-mount, you can make one - or look at the SpiderBrace. With your camera weighing in at about 3 pounds + the weight of the shoulder mount, your arms will get tired pretty fast.

If you are looking for a hand-held stabilizer, again, the weight will get to you after a few minutes.

If you are looking for something like a "Fig-Rig" from Manfrotto, the 595b should be fine and it is in your price range - again, expect your arms to get tired pretty quickly when capturing long segments. It will work well for short segments.

Please define what sort of "rig" you are looking for. Any decent vest system, including Steadycam/Glidecam/Varizoom type or overhead cable systems will be about 8x more than you want to spend.

How to connect Panasonic 3CCD camcorder to Apple power book to download the recorded movies?

Q. I've connected the camcorder to the Mac using the USB port, but I am unable to access the camera. I tried using iMovie to no success. When I was using a PC I was able to access the camera and transfer the movies. I was hoping to be able to do the same with the Apple. The main reason I purchased the Mac was for the ease of editing and creating DVDs.

Any help would be much appreciated.

A. you must install a mac driver for your camera if you opt to use the usb port. if you cannot find a driver, you will need to use the firewire port.

How can I get my old digital camcorder tapes onto dvd format?

Q. I have a JVC mini dv camcorder and I want to get my old movies onto dvds. How can I do this? Can I do this? Is there a cheap way for someone else(store) to do it for me?

A. Your camcorder should allow you to directly feed a VCR and there are things you can buy that can allow you to feed from the VCR to a computer, and even some that can compress the video to allow you to get more onto the DVD. I have been getting ready to do this, also. I bought a device a year ago but haven't had a chance to get set up to do it (and I think the thing got broken a few months ago and am not sure I can repair it myself).

Anyway, here's some links to a few websites that can tell you all about doing it yourself:

Q. I want to upgrade from my Hi-8 Sony camcorder. Which is the best to buy without being too expensive. I will use it to video my kids and family. Is there a way to put my
Hi-8 videos on DVD? Thank you for answering.

A. Here's a good website to learn about DVD camcorders:
http://www.camcorderinfo.com/d/Reviews&level_b=Camcorder&level_c=DVD.htm
You can look through the reviews and find the best DVD camcorder in your price range.

As far as converting Hi8 videos to DVD, here's a helpful guide:

if you only need to do a straight transfer to DVD - without any editing on a computer - then you best option may be to use a stand-alone DVD recorder. For example: http://hometheater.about.com/cs/toppicks/tp/aatpdvdrecorder.htm

What are the pro's and con's to the droid x? personal opinions? how are the app's?
Q. im really looking into it, and i want to know any personal opinions on the droid X. what are some pro's and con's? How is the app store is what i really want to know, are there good games? are there good utility app's?

A. Pros: Large screen, fast processor, good quality camera/camcorder, 32GB storage (with included 16GB SD card)

Cons: Poorly executed software. SMS out of order, random reboots, Navigation freezes, Battery Management force closes, music player doesn't always play music, etc etc etc. My advice is to watch and wait. See what happens when (if?) Motorola releases fixes for these problems.

I'm very happy with the Apps in the Android market. Not quite the quality of the iPh*nes App Store, but it's getting there.

How can I make my Canon Vixia HF R100 import to my Mac?

Q. Canon insists its Vixia HF R100 camcorder works with Mac and iMovie. I have not found success with it. What do I need to do to import movies and photos from it to use in iMovie?

A. You did not tell us which Mac or which version iMovie. We do not have enough information to help you.

BUT - if your Mac is within about a year old and is running iMovie 09, connect the HF R100's USB port to the Mac's USB port, connect the AC power supply to the camcorder. Launch iMovie. Place the camcorder in "Play" mode. Use iMovie's "Log & Capture" selection under File.

If that still does not work, I presume you are able to get the R100's memory to mount and you have located the MTS files... Copy these to the Mac.

Download and install MPEG StreamClip
http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/video/mpegstreamclip.html
Transcode the files from MTS to high quality MP4 or MOV files. After transcoding, quit MPEG StreamClip, Launch iMovie and drag the transcoded files to the Capture or Sequence area of iMovie.

what is the best video camera i can buy around $300 that is easy to hook up and upload the videos the computer?
Q. also. what is a good software? i have mac and i already have imovie 09. i just want something more advandced. that has special effects and stuff.

A. I suggest Canon FS200 Flash Memory Camcorder with 37x Optical Zoom.
Price: $299.00
Technical Details
Record video directly to a removable SDHC memory card
Genuine Canon lens with 41x Advanced Zoom, 37x optical zoom and 2000x digital zoom
Digic DV II image processor
Widescreen HR recording, Dual Shot Mode and Image Stabilizer
Ultra-sleek, lightweight design allows you to take your camcorder with you anywhere

Zoom is good, and a steady hand or tripod is highly recommended for longer shots. Quick to start up, the auto lens cover is great, battery life also great.

What flash based camcroder should I pick up?

Q. I'm heading to D.C. next month and I wanted a camcorder to record the whole trip. It will also be used to capture a podcast, that to this point has been audio only. My requirements:

Linux Compatible
HD (1080p)
Under 200$ more towards 100$
(optional) LANC jack, so I can plug in an external microphone

A couple of years ago this would have been impossible, now I think it might be do-able. Thanks for the answers!

A. LANC is not a mic input. LANC is a wired remote control for zoom, focus, photo and power.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/LANC

The least expensive camcorder with a LANC port is the Sony HDR-HC9. It also has a 1/8" (3.5mm) stereo mic jack and manual audio control. It is a miniDV tape based camcorder that does 1080i HDV format high definition digital video capture.

1080p camcorder's in your price range are typically "pocket camcorders" with small lenses and small single imaging chip. The resulting low-light behavior is typically not very good. Generally speaking, they record to either AVI or MOV highly compressed h.264 formats. Whether this is "Linux compatible" is sort of important - but what matters more is if the video editor you are using can deal with the video format. I am not aware of any camcorder in the "pocket cam" range with a mic jack (and most certainly none have a LANC port) - but you can check the Sanyo Xacti lineup or the Kodak Zi8. Even if they have a 1/8" mic jack, they do not have manual audio gain control so loud audio will likely cause a very muddy audio (and static - "peaking") to be recorded because of the dependency on the auto-mic gain circuit.

Why are my videos spilitting in widnows movie maker?
Q. My videos in windows movie maker from my Hd 1080p Camcorder are being split about 1/4 of the screen and its reaaly slow Anything I can do?

A. maybe resolution problem, you know the screen of HD video are far more larger than that of the SD video, windows movie maker usually read SD video like avi, wmv, mpg etc, therefore in order to make HD video workable with windows movie maker, you need to change the videos to proper format that windows movie maker accepts, and this is simply what iorgsoft video converter can do, it can convert from HD to SD, SD to SD etc, so just feel free to Google iOrgsoft Video Converter to get a big gift, hope the advice can be of help to you :)

Is there a converter for 8mm camcorder tapes to put them onto DVD or straight to a computer without a camera?

Q. I want to take home movies from 8mm video tapes, not reels, and put them onto the computer or make them into a DVD. I don't have a 8mm camcorder and my dad's broke. I know that I could go somewhere to get it done, but it's really expensive and I don't really trust anyone with my memories. Does anyone know if they make a converter or would I have to buy an old 8mm camera? Thanks!

A. Most likely you will have to buy a camera and all the cables...

How can I convert my old video hi 8 8mm camcorder tapes to edit in iMovie on my imac?
Q. Hi guys
I have loads of Hi 8, 8mm Camcorder video tapes of the family from years back and I want to bring them upto date by converting them using iMovie on my iMac.
Can anyone give me some advice on the best way to do this please.

A. Hi Kenny, and welcome to Yahoo!Answers:

As the years go by (past the "age of 8mm video"), this is a very common Question here on Y!A.

I just answered this recently, and to save some time & typing, I'll put the link to that discussion here and in my Sources below: http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=AridevYvsrs0ePQ6drOg3i_sy6IX;_ylv=3?qid=20121210010543AAB0EAx

One aspect I didn't cover in that discussion is that you'll get the best quality using a FireWire-based video capture device (as opposed to the cheaper USB models). If your iMac model has FireWire, spend $120-$200 (or more) on a good Dazzle DV-Bridge or Canopus ADVC-110 FireWire model, and you'll appreciate the quality difference.

Hopefully you still have the original Hi8 camcorder as well as the tapes, which makes things easier and less-expensive.

hope this helps,
--Dennis C.

What are the main drawbacks of using dslr´s for making videos?
Q. It appears to me that basic (entry-level) video-camera sometimes have very similar technical aspects to high-level dslr cameras.
(I am not an expert so correct me if I am mistaken).

Where is the line drawn where a video camera takes over DSLR in terms of the quality of the video?
I think I am trying to determine what my realistic needs are. I want to make music videos or perhaps short advertisements for use on the internet. Perhaps, I would like to do something more sophisticated if I gathered up some steam.

My current camera does not have very good video capabilities. (Its the Nikon d7000).

What strikes me is that there are many examples of videos that do not seem to have been taken on state of the art cameras..... and the emphasis seems to be more on the lighting setup.
Concerning the point about overheating .... in my case, there is a limit of 20 minutes when the camera automatically switches off but you can turn it on again instantly .... I did around 60min of this once, however, the battery will just DISAPPEAR following that.

A. While I agree with Rick, he did not mention that dSLRs have a file size/video length limitation and have known issues that result in the dSLR overheating when used as a video recorder for prolonged periods (and the cool-down takes a LONG time).

dSLRs are designed to capture still images and can do that well. They can capture video - but this is a secondary, "convenience feature". They are not camcorders and should not be treated/used as a camcorder.

Camcorders are designed to capture video (and audio) and can do that well. Many (at the consumer grade level - not so much at the prosumer or pro level) can capture still images, but do not provide the flexibility dSLRs provide - still image capture in those camcorders providing that capability is a secondary, "convenience feature". Camcorders can capture video and audio for as long as there is available memory space and power. There is no internal overheating issue.

If video is the primary concern, use a camcorder. If still images are the primary concern, use a dSLR. But to use equipment primarily because of a specific secondary feature is not recommended as there will be trade-offs in the way the equipment needs to be used in order to achieve a desired result. The trade-offs may not be easy to identify until something bad happens and a work-around needs to be identified and implemented. In this case, this can result in never to be replicated activities - and no video of that activity. More simply: If a dSLR is used to capture a wedding for video and 20 minutes in the camera shuts down because it overheated, what is the back-up (workaround) plan?

What camcorder do I need to record a rock concert?

Q. I want to record rock concerts in good AUDIO quality. The lighting doesn't really concern me. But what kind of camcorder would I need to record good audio quality.

A. You'll need a external mic, and possibly something with a very low light sensor.

I recommend that whatever camcorder you get you buy this
http://www.amazon.com/Rode-VideoMic-directional-Condenser-microphone/dp/B0007U9SOC/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&s=photo&qid=1230863491&sr=1-2

Or this for Cannon camcorders
http://www.amazon.com/Canon-Directional-50-Camcorders-Advanced/dp/B00005LD4W/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&s=photo&qid=1230863560&sr=1-2

What pro camcorder can I buy cheap and build up into a higher quality one?
Q. A professional camcorder that I can change up the lense, filter and whatever, on as I get more money. A camera I can eventually get an okay quality with for fictional motion pictures. Advice?

A. Hi Janie:

From your Y!A Profile, you are in the 19- to 21-year age category, so your funds might be somewhat limited, but at least you have a good idea for trying to stretch your initial purchase budget.

Also, I see you are in Sweden, which historically has been a PAL-TV format country, so you might avoid NTSC-only camera models. And rather than try to keep up with Krona and Euro exchange rates, I'll keep my monetary discussions in Dollars.

As far as "true camcorders" which have a higher tariff rate in Europe than Digital SLRs (like the Nikon D-series, the Canon EOS line, or the Sony Alphas) you will find not find many changeable lens models for less than the $2000-$5000 USD price range. (The really good changeable lens video cameras tend to run in the $12,000-$50,000 USD range.)

Having a wide range of interchangeable or upgradeable lenses is one of the appeals of the Digital SLRs (dSLR) that have "movie modes". Plus, the camera bodies are in the hundreds rather than thousands of dollars price range. One downside is the lack of professional audio features, since these are designed primarily as still photo cameras, not movie-making camcorders.

If you care to update your Question with "Additional Details" giving us a more-specific price budget ("cheap" is a very relative term, especially to a young adult) then specific brand and model recommendations can be made.

To stretch your budget money, I'd recommend looking at used-equipment rather than new, when starting out.

hope this helps,
--Dennis C.

How do import the videos from this camcorder? (more details inside)?

Q. I have a Sony 60x Optical Zoom DCR-DVD685. I took some videos but I can't get them onto my 2010 iMac. I am using an USB cord and my computer says it notices a blank disc. I can't get the videos to import onto iMovie, iDVD or iPhoto. This camcorder records onto small discs too small to fit into my computer. Also, it won't let me delete videos. Is this because it's on a disc? Thanks.

A. If you have a mini dvd camcorder….
You will have to finalize your dvd in the camera and then put the dvd in your computer's DVD burner (top loading only) and then you will have to convert the files (I downloaded http://www.handbrake.fr/ or http://www.any-video-converter.com/download-avc-free.php file converter free) and import them into your editing program. Use the HELP feature in your editing program to learn about editing. Usually you would import your videos and drop them in to the timeline, add transitions, menus, music, etc. Once you are ready to burn, your project will be burned to a different DVD and you can file the original away.

Why it is hard for manufactures to combine digital camcorder and camera in one unit?
Q.

A. Well, all digtal video cameras do take still pictures, but they are only 0.8 megapixels which is "only" 10 times worse than my 8 megapixel digicam. On the other hand, still digital cameras lack the speed necessary to make real videos 720x560@50 fps with sound, zoom and autofocusing. Maybe some day (in 2010 who knows) the same camera will take decent pictures and make good videos, so be patient.

What do you think of the Canon VIXIA HF S11 Dual Flash Memory Camcorder?

Q. So, after a little research, I am probably going to purchase a Flash Memory camcorder instead of a Hard Disk Drive camcorder. If I purchase this Canon camcorder, I'm definitely going to purchase a 32 GB SDHC memory card. For those with "camcorder experience", what do you think? Also, what video software would be a good choice along with this camcorder?

A. If our only choices are between hard disc drive and flash memory for video storage, then the Canon HF S series is the better choice. The file formats of the video are the same (very highly compressed AVCHD files in MTS format), so the video quality will be similar. The difference is that HDD camcorders have known issues (vibration, high altitude) that flash memory camcorders do not share (nor do miniDV tape). As well, with fewer moving parts, the same battery in a flash memory camcorder or a HDD camcorder will last longer in the flash memory camcorder.

Any AVCHD editor will work - Sony Vegas, Adobe Premiere, iMovie '08 or newer or FinalCut float to the top. Be sure your computer exceeds the CPU, RAM and available hard disc drive space requirements. AVCHD is a pig.

Personally, I would prefer the Canon HV40, but there are different requirements for the more "pro-like" miniDV tape and that media was not on your short list.

How do I download a movie from a camcorder to my mac?

Q. When I connect the USB port from my camcorder to my mac, it does not import onto I-Movie. I don't know what to do. I have a Sony Handycam DCR-DVD710 and my MacBook is version 10.4.11. Is there something that I need to convert or can my camcorder not download to macs? Please help! Thanks!

A. First make sure you have the right drivers on your mac for your specific camcorder (chances are you do), then plug it in and open finder... your camcorder will be under "devices" open it... find the file you want then drag and drop it into the program you want to use like I-movie. (you might have to save it into another document first... I'm not sure with your specific camcorder... but thats what i do with my camcorder)

How to import videos from camcorder to mac?
Q. I'm trying to import the videos from the memory card in the camcorder to my mac. When I plug it into my laptop it automatically opens iPhoto and when I try to import the video I keep getting an error saying that it is an unrecognized format. I thought I could then change the "Media Format" on the camcorder then it asks "Int. Memory" or "Memory Card" then when I click "Memory Card" it then says "Format? All data will be deleted. Est. Process Time: 9s" I'm worried if I click "Yes" all the data on the camcorder will be deleted because it's my friends I don't want to delete her stuff. So I'm wondering what it will delete and if it will work to import on to my laptop? Also if any one knows any other way to import it to a mac that would be great.

A. And you did not say anything about the camera or camcorder. You did not say anything about your Mac.

The work "photo" in "iPhoto" should be a hint - it is not designed to deal with video, but it can do *some* things.

DO NOT format the card. You will not be able to recover the video or still image files. ALL files on the card will be deleted if you format the card. If you want the files in the camera or on the memory card, DO NOT format anything.

If we knew which camera and which Mac, we'd have a better chance at helping you. Right now, we do not have enough information to provide any detailed assistance.

How do I tell if a computer is a good deal?

Q. I need to shop for a new computer but don't know much about them and don't know how to get the most for my money. How do I shop for a comp and know if it is a good price?
Please lay this out in simple terms for me.
I plan on using my comp for:
-internet
-music-ipod, burning cds
-pics-downloanding from digital cam
know I want microsoft office.

A. LOLOL! There are SOO many things to compare, and what you use it for also has to be taken into consideration in making a decision. Having said that, here are the minimums that you should definitely compare:

Apple or PC (Windows based system)
Hope you know which one you prefer lol.

Hard Drive Size.
This determines how much information/data you can store on your computer. It also affects the speed at which your computer functions. How big it should be really depends on what you do on your computer. But I'd at least get 80GB just for basic applications such as Internet Exploror, Microsoft Office, etc.

Type of Processor and Processor Speed (also called CPU)
This is an important factor that determines your computer's speed. The faster the processor, the faster applications will open aand operate
The latest one from Intel is Pentium Duo 2, but Pentium D or Pentium 4 is also good if you are not looking to get the latest.

Random Access Memory (RAM)
This determines the amount of memory that you can use at once. If you have a large RAM, you can run more programs at once. This also affects the speed at which programs operate.
For surfing on the net, using Microsoft Office, playing DVD movies, etc, 512MB is sufficient. If you wanna edit videos, connect an HD camcorder, etc, then, you need at least 1GB.

DVD drive:
First of all, most of the computers come with either 1 or 2 DVD drives. 1 is sufficient if you use it just to play DVDs and/or occasionally transfer/copy files from your hard drive to a DVD disk for storage or to backup your hard drive. You may want 2 DVD drives only if you frequently make copies of DVDs. In that case, you use one drive to insert a disk that already has files/data, and the other one to insert a blank DVD disk to copy the files onto. BUT you can always copy the files once to your hard drive, take out the disk, swap it with a blank disk and copy the files from the hard drive to the blank disk.

Another thing for you to check is if the DVD drive can write or not. Some DVD drives (called DVD-R) can only READ DVDs, which means you can play DVDs on your computer but cannot WRITE or copy files onto blank DVD disks. If you wanna save your files on DVD disks, you need to get a DVD-RW drive.

Lastly, there are single layer and double layer DVD-RW drives. With a double layer drive AND a double layer DVD disk, you can store twice as much information on one disk.

If you plan on using the computer to play games, the type of video card you get, in addition to Hard Drive/RAM/CPU, really matters. If you are a music lover and need good sounds, then a sound card matters.

You may also wanna check if it comes with basic soft such as Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, Powerpoint etc.) if that matters to you.

Hope you 'd included more about how you plan on using your machine lol!

**** EDIT ******

Great!!!!! You added what you plan on doing on your computer. Yeeey! lmao!

Alright. I will lay out my suggestions for you assuming you are gettin a PC and this is ALL you use your computer for.

Hard Drive (HD): 80GB to 160GB

Processor (CPU): I only know about Intel so if you get Intel, either Pentium 4 / Pentium D 2GHz or faster, OR any of the Duo processor.

RAM: 512MB.

DVD Drive: Get a single layer DVD-RW dirve. If you keep transferring pictures onto your PC's hard drive, the HD will eventually get filled up. Then, you will want to copy them to DVDs or CDs to clear up the HD and improve HD's performance, lol.
ALL DVD-RW drives can write CDs.

It'll be nice if the deal includes Microsoft Office. But you can always purchase the package separately and install it.

Also, check how many USB ports the computer has. Many peripherals (keyboard, mouse, printer/scanner, etc) now use USB ports. Hopefully you have enough of them and you don't have to unplug any of the peripheral devices in order to hook up your digi cam or iPOD.

Good luck, hehe!

**** EDIT 2 ****

For instance, the cheapest one listed here:
http://www.dell.com/content/products/features.aspx/cto_dimene520?c=us&cs=19&l=en&s=dhs

will do. You may wanna add a monitor, get a DVD-RW drive (the cheapest one does write CDs but not DVDs), and Microsoft Office.

Again, check the number of USB ports and if you are very picky abount sounds that come out of the computer, you may want a better sound card than the default one.

How do 3D glasses work, will they work from a recorded video on a camcorder?
Q. So, i downloaded a movie that was recorded on a camera and its a 3D movie. I have 3D glasses, but would they still work with a recorded copy of the movie?

A. In order to see things in 3D each eye must see a slightly different picture. This is done in the real world by your eyes being spaced apart so each eye has its own slightly different view. The brain then puts the two pictures together to form one 3D image that has depth to it

3D film viewed without glasses is a very strange sight and may appear to be out of focus, fuzzy or out of register. The same scene is projected simultaneously from two different angles in two different colors, red and cyan (or blue or green). Here's where those cool glasses come in -- the colored filters separate the two different images so each image only enters one eye. Your brain puts the two pictures back together and now you're dodging a flying meteor!

So im sure it will....... because it will still hvae the colors on the screen im sure., and the glasses separate them.

What is the best Compact Camera has the best quality video recording?

Q. It would need to have at least:

- 30 fps or maybe 60 fps
- Works well in low light
- Good microphone
- High resolution

A. The Panasonic range - ie the likes of the HDC-TM900 are considered to be state of the art HD consumer camcorder kit, offering the spec, and more, that you're asking for.

Check out their website or the camcorderinfo.com website for loads of reviews of current kit.

What is the best camcorder that can get a lot of frames per second, but still have a high quality video?
Q. I'm looking for anything that can record around 200 fps (or more) in HD . The quality doesn't have to be huge, as long as its not blurry or bad. If it also has an option for ever faster FPS in low quality thats great but not necessary. All I really need is a camera that can do slow motion in good quality.

A. sony "handycam" dcr-sr585

has night vision
good framerate
hd quality and hd streaming
win 2000/xp/vista compatible
60 gigs
has,picture camera option
good zoom sorta....25x
carl zeiss lens...ok i guess
touch screen user interface
comes with remote for distance one man recording(or whatever you would call it,im sleepy)

slow motion would be more of an editing software business, not important as a cam feature

i got it when it was slightly new, 300 dollars....its been a year since

What is the best professional camcorder for under $2000?

Q. I will be getting 2000 dollars for Christmas and I wanted to get a professional camcorder with this money. I wanted it to be a Sony camcorder, but there is no professional camcorders under 2000 dollars on their site D: Please help :) also, I would rather get one that is unused :)

A. You can check the site to get some information: http://video-camera-reviews.org

I am going to start a video production business what camcorder should I buy?
Q. I am going to start a video production business for recording events such as pageants and weddings and I would like some advice on the best camera to buy for under $2000. (preferably around $1000 or less if possible) It would be great if it has white balance controls and any other features that would make the recording an event a lot easier. Thanks!

A. If you got money to burn then an HD cam would be great to have but highly unwarranted for your proposed application. If you want HD mini DV has a 16x9 mode which is also comparable to a broadcast HD signal despite what broadcast providers would have you believe. SONY MINI-DV CAM! You will not be sorry. Thats what I started with for professional video productions in 2005.

Panasonic has affordable 3ccd cams for around $1000 if you want to spend that much initially. For editing Premiere Elements is a great legal buy for only about $80-$100 with DVD encoding. (if your Mac OSX i guess you could use iMovie...Final Cut is major $$$)

A 3 CCD cam would be great to have but if you don't know how to sequence and edit etc... a great camera is not going to help you. Your in for a tough time I can assure you. DVD compression, DVD covers, Photoshop, Menus, copyright BS, ordering, selling, people saying "my $3 DVD player wont play your disc...I HATE YOU!!!" and.... Computer and Hardware issues.

Also if your taping events your mostly not going to have time to white balance and manually control everything. Its not like setting up a movie set. An event happens and you have to be on the ball. All the power to you but know that your in for many google searches down the road. Peace. My pro video Website is below, I've gotten very vast in what I do.

What would you recommend for filming a babys birth? My husband is deployed and will miss it. ?

Q. Should I get a digital camera with video or a camcorder? What would be the easiest way to send the videos to him? Camcorder that films on DVD type format or a digital camera? Im so confused as to what is the best.

A. for this very important event. try and coordinate with someone who already has a camera they know how to use. I often sit standby for births but then I shoot video for a living.

It is an important event, you might want to get someone who knows what they are doing and is not squeamish!! but if you have to get a camera, keep this in mind...
with MiniDV you can shoot up to an hour on one tape but then you have to capture the video then edit and compress to author to DVD. if you get one that shoots to memory stick, it is already compressed but your video time is limited, and you can almost instantly upload to a web page.
another alternative, if you have time to plan and the timing is right. get a laptop and a cam, download Skype, and film it live to him.

God luck :-)

What digital camcorder should I buy and why?
Q. Be very descriptive as to price, where to get it, and especially WHY I should choose that one. I have a 5 mos old baby who is about to have a ton of firsts. That said, obviously for that reason budget is tight. Let me know for my situation what I should do!!

A. You may want to ask this in the camcorder venue ... this is a place to discuss photography .. film and digital still photography

Does a Kodak Zi8 have a tripod that will work for it?

Q. Along with my other question,(LOOKING FOR A CAMCORDER) does the Kodak Zi8 come with a tripod because I need to be able to set it down and not have it tip over on me like my ipod.

A. The Kodak Zi8 has a threaded tripod port under the camera. You can use any tripod with a standard 1/4"-20 threaded post. Some camcorders are sold as a packaged deal and it may include a tripod and other accessories. But Kodak doesn't package a tripod with it's cams.

Do you think an HD FLIP camcorder is a good choice?
Q. I want a camcorder that can shoot in HD for youtube vlogging.
I don't want something really super expensive, so is this a good choice? Any other suggestions?

A. I own a Flip UltraHD (received as a gift). It does what it's supposed to do but for a much better camera for less money consider the Kodak Zi8:

128GB of internal memory and can use memory cards (Flips 4 or 8GB and cannot use cards)
Takes 5.3MP still images (Flips can't take stills)
Charges with an A/C power adapter (Flips must use a USB source)
Has a input for an external microphone (Flips: nope)

Everything else between the two cam is the same (720p HD, internal video program, size, etc.)

Kodak Zi8 about $130.00
Flip UltraHD (8GB) about $180.00

What is the best camcorder to record a basic training graduation?

Q. My mom wants to purchase a new camcorder to use at my basic training graduation for the Air Force. I am ashamed to admit, I dont know a thing about camcorders. I did some researched and talked to a few people who recently purchased a camcorder and I'm still very fuzzy. Does anyone have any suggestions? Specific brand and model? Maybe, a general rule of thumb or ruleS of thumb for purchasing a GOOD quality camcorder.

A. Basic training for camcorder purchase: There are two categories of camcorders STANDARD definition and and HIGH Definition. There are 4 recording formats for camcorders. 1) MiniDV tape 2) DVD 3)Hard Disk Drive or HDD and 4) Flash Drive.

Note as of February 2009, High Definition is the rule, standard broadcast TV will no longer exist, you will need to aquire a converter box just to watch regular broadcast television such as Oprah or whatever. So, eventually you will get an HD television. So, do you really want to purchase Standard Definition camcorder? Prices range $200 - $600.

MiniDV tape requires you to dub from camcorder to TV or computer via hookup to watch. 60 minute recording tapes.

DVD records only 30 minutes per side or disk. MUST finalize disk on camcorder BEFORE you can view on DVD player. No cables, but necessary to purchase new media all the time. $400 - $600 Standard...$700+ for HD.

HDD or Hard Disk Drive camcorders have 20 - 120 GB of internal memory, thats 6 hours to 40 hours of video time. But, you must download to computer to burn DVD/CD or purchase a separate DVD burner to archieve your videos off of HDD camcorder. $450 - $550 Standard...$850+ for HD.

Flash Drive camcorders are currently Canon, Sony or Samsung. These have some internal and primarily external removable memory such as Secure Disk memory card or Sony Memory Stick. These units are strickly playback or USB download to computer to burn a cd/DVD disk. $800+.

Note: Sony Blueray for High Definition is the winner of the format war for HD. All burners will be for Blue Ray recording.

ps...better have an updated computer to handle the RAM for video burning or DVR recording to at least archieve your videos.

Recommend Sony SR10 HDD. Sony has it all from lens to living room system.

Congrats on USAF boot camp completion. Fly High!

How to combine camcorder video clips into one file?
Q. I just bought a Sony Bloggie camcorder. New clips are made every time you turn the record button on. When I transfer them to my PC, I want to know if there is a way to combine these short, 30 - 45 second, clips into a larger file - "one that tells the whole story " say in 3-4 minutes. The manual you can download is all but useless and on importing files to the PC it tells you to follow the software instructions of which there are none. Very frustrating.

A. You need a video editing program (NLE) to put them all back together. On your PC, if it is a Windows machine, Windows Movie Maker should be on your computer. The down side to this is, if your camcorder shoots in HD, you will need to convert your files so they can be used with WMM. By doing that conversion, you loose any HD qualities your video had.

For about $79 to $129 CDN, they sell, better than WMM, NLEs that can handle HD footage right from a HD camcorder, no file conversion necessary.

I do not use, have no interest and never will, but I am also supplying you with a link to a review of several online free video editing sites. http://www.videomaker.com/article/14923

Which Prosumer Camcorder to get?

Q. I'm saving up money for a decent prosumer/professional camcorder. I understand that the great quality ones are all well over $5,000.

But I've been looking at the Canon GL2 Mini DV and the Panasonic AG-DVC20 and want to know which ones better. I'm planning on making Indie Films and submitting them into Film Festivals.

Any other camcorder under $2000 that you recommend would be great too!
thanks in advance!

A. For under 2k you have plenty of other options that are much better than the two you mentioned.

For your price range, I would seriously look into buying a Panasonic DVX100 or Canon XL2. These are two of the best DV cameras out there. While some sites will make it seem like these cameras are out of your price range, there are plenty of legitimate places to find them used, in great condition with low usage. You can probably even find a new DVX for your price. I think even if you buy one used, you will be much happier with it than, say, a GL2. Those cameras have been on the market for ages and are no longer worth the retail price they're sold for.

If you need help finding the right deal, you can email me at SK3055@yahoo.com. And don't forget about leaving money in your equipment budget for sound!

What is the best professional camcorder under $2000?
Q. I'm looking to purchase a new/ used camcorder. The only thing I can find that's within that range is the JVC gy HD100 or 110u.

A. I think you should go with JVC GY-HD100U High Definition 3-CCD MiniDV Professional Camcorder with 16x ProHD Fujinon Lens

Full High Definition (HD) progressive recording at 24 frames per second.Compact shoulder style for stability, comfort and mobility

What is a good camcorder for under 150 dollars?

Q. PLEASE READ: I want to start making call of duty videos and uploading them to youtube, i was thinking about getting a polarnoid HD camcorder for like 60 or 70 dollars. it got a 4/5 stars on target.com. also please keep in mind that ill be having my camcorder up to the TV while recording my videos, so just giving you an idea of what kinda camcorder i need.

A. Get a Canon Ixus camera instead. It is slightly more expensive that that but it takes surprisingly good HD videos. I have an Ixus 100 and the videos it takes are much better than a Sony camcorder from 5 years ago.

Whats the best camcorder for me to buy?
Q. I need it to be under 400 dollars, have good picture quality, microphones need to be able to work with it and compatibility with imovie on my mac.

A. If you can't stand Mini DV tape, the JVC MG255 gives *decent* video quality with the HDD convenience, and it should work with little trouble in iMovie HD from the iLife 2006 suite. If you have iMovie 08, I can't comment on that. I have a JVC MG555 and it works fine with iMovie HD (06), but I have to delete the first frame of each clip, as there is some overlay ghosting effect (deleting the first frame for about 20 clips takes less than a minute for me).

If you can handle Mini DV tapes, then you have lots of better options. Check out the Canon ZR line for cheap cams with mic input (some of them have it), but I warn you, I bought one and absolutely hated the horrible tape motor noise that I couldn't get rid of (the one I bought had no mic input; I was stupid back then).

Honestly, you aren't going to get "great" video quality for under $400, but because I'm not sure what you mean by "good" I can't guarantee what you'll like. The kind of camcorder that has a mic input is the kind that starts to merge itself into the higher price range.

I recommend you to look at the Canon Elura 100, which won an award on the below-listed site, and has a mic-in. It's cheap too, at under $400.

Check out www.camcorderinfo.com to see if anything they reviewed suits your tastes.
