Canon HG10 HD HDD Camcorder, good zoom?

Q. I am looking at getting the Canon HG10 Camcorder in order to film some amateur theatre productions with my college.

Will the 10x optical zoom on this camera be enough to film from the back of a medium sized theatre and still maintain picture quality to the highest standard?

I want a Hard Drive camera for sure and also an old fashioned viewfinder.

Here is the spec on the Canon HG10, and information or suggestions for different cameras is greatly appreciated:

http://www.canon.co.uk/for_home/product_finder/camcorders/high_definition_hd/HG10/index.asp?specs=1

Thanks in advance for any help.

A. yes it has good zoom

why expensive camcorder have less optical zoom?
Q.

A. High end camcorders usually have replaceable lenses, just like an SLR camera has replaceable lenses. The lenses that the include typically prefer quality over zoom length. They are made of better glass, and result in better color clarity and quality. Also, less expensive camcorders typically have a very short focal length, with little to no control over manual focus. These features are very important on higher end camcorders. Anyhow, I find that people rely on zoom lenses way to much, and rarely find a long zoom necessary.

What camcorder records well in low light?

Q. Hello all, I have an $800 dollar budget and am looking for a new camcorder. I had a Vixia HG21 and it was stolen. The problem with it was in low light the picture got really grainy and the frame rate slowed down so much. The video got choppy in low light, it was pretty frustrating. I want a new camcorder but a nice one that is HD and records well in low light or darkness. Thanks

A. If you need good low-light behavior, then you need a camcorder with LARGE lenses and LARGE imaging chip array. Compare the size of these items on your (former) camcorder or any that you want to get to a Sony HDR-FX1000, Canon XHA1, Panasonic AG-HVX200 or any other large format camcorder.

If you need to capture video in zero visible light, then you need a camcorder capable of "seeing" infrared light. They usually have their own built-in infrared emitter. Check the Sony HDR-CX900 series or the HVR-A1. You are looking for "NightShot" or "Super NightShot".

Are any camcorders good in low light environments like indoors?
Q. I have a camcorder I bought for 235 in 2011 which is 10MP. Indoors it is always grainy and fuzzy except in some very bright lighting. Outdoors it's better. Are there any camcorders available that are sharp indoors and in low light/dark environments and have little/no visible noise/grain?
My camcorder only has ISO controls for photographs and not video. It has a "Night mode" and white balance but no matter what settings I use, I almost always get grainy video indoors even with lights on.
My camcorder is Toshiba Camileo A35.

A. Good low-light means large lens filter diameter and large imaging chip. The large lens allows in more light; the large imaging chip can deal with what little light is available. You have already discovered that small lens diameter and small imaging chip doe not behave well. As camcorders increase in price, their lenses get larger - so do the imaging chips... You did not tell us which camcorder you are currently using, but at your price point, I would guess 30mm filter diameter and 1/6" single imaging chip. or you are using a digital still camera (maybe even a bridge camera) that happens to capture video as a secondary "convenience feature".

For low-light conditions, at a minimum, I use my Sony HDR-FX1. This was replaced by the HDR-FX1000. 72mm filter diameter lens and 1/3" 3CCD imaging chip. If it is really dark, then Panasonic AG-HVX200 with 82mm filter diameter and 1/3" 3CCD imaging chip works well... above this they start to get expensive.

If these cameras are too expensive, you have an alternative... learn to shoot "day for night". ADD light during video capture

and use a decent video editor...

Some good MiniDV Camcorder you like?

Q. Can you guys name a couple MiniDV Camcorders that include the features of Still photo (via SD Card), and a Microphone?
which one would you prefer?
Budget: $300

A. For under $500, the Panasonic PV-GS3xx line of camcorders offers some of the best bang for the buck on the market. It has 3CCDs which translates to better images than almost anything else in the under $1000 price range.

If you want MiniDV and high definition recording, the Canon HV20 is the hot item to have.

Before buying any camcorder, be sure to look over this collection of buying tips:

Need help selecting a camcorder for newbie filmmaker?
Q. Can someone please point me in the direction of a camcorder that would have a film finish for under $1000? I would use this camera to start shooting my own shorts and I would like to use this camera for a while. I've done some research and i'm pretty sure i want 3CCD instead of CMOS but if you have any other suggestions please let me know.

A. There is no camcorder - new - that meets both your requirements.

The Canon HV40 does DV/HDV and 24p and has a mic jack and manual audio control - but has a single CMOS chip

The Canon GL2 is 3CCD standard definition DV only - no 24p, has a mic jack and manual audio control and is over your budget.

Then comes the Panasonic AG-DVX100, Sony HDR-FX1000... and it goes up from there.

very hard problem with my camcorder and video editing software!?

Q. ok i will make a clip on my camcorder and will upload it to just a file on my computer.then when i go to play the video windows media player is playing it and you can hear the sound of the video perfectly. then when i go to my video editing software and import the same clip, you can see the video but can't hear the sound. Also when i go on my soft ware and right click on the clip and go to properties and when i look at audio, it says nothing, What do i do?

A. You did not tell us which camcorder you are using.

You did not tell us which video editor you are using.

You need to transcode the video file to a format your video editor can deal with. MPEG Streamclip
http://www.squared5.com/
can do that job - there are lots of pthers applications that can, too.

MovieMaker likes WMV files. iMovie likes MOV and MP4 files.

Video editing software?
Q. Hi there!

I'm looking for a video editing software, with which you can see the preview of several video tracks (at least 3), while editing.

Thanks in advance!

Details:
We recorded a school leavers' ball with 5 camcorders, from 5 different angles, simultaneously and we want to make one full video out of these materials we have. It would be hard to do the editing using a software like Sony Vegas, in which you can see the preview of only one video at a time.

A. Hi.

No video editing software is going to let you preview five different shots AT ONCE. To do this, you would have to have 5 separate viewer windows. This simply does not exist.

No matter what edit program you use, you can only preview one thing at a time. Once multiple sources of video are on your time line mixed together, you can view them all at once, but I do not think that's what you're talking about.

If you shot an event with 5 cameras, I assume the cameras were locked down in one spot the entire time. (Unless maybe you had a hand held.) Therefore, it does not seem like you would really need to be constantly previewing the shot. Each camera would be getting a pretty predictable shot. Now if they were all moving around all the time, the shots won't be at all predictable, so the only way to do it is familiarize yourself with the footage first.

Normally, before editing any project, you need to become very familiar with all your footage. You need to watch all your footage and write down what shots you particularly like. You can speed through this fairly quickly if the person editing is already relatively familiar with the footage. This way, you are "previewing" your footage before you actually start editing, not during the actual editing process. This is simply the way it is done. No one EVER should use the editing process to get familiar with their footage. That should be done before actual editing begins. Now during editing, you will have to look at it again and again to remind yourself what is where, but if you sit down to edit a project with no idea what your footage is you are doing it in a dreadfully inefficient way.

Now here is one way you could do it and achieve what you're asking for even though you can not preview more than one shot at a time. I have done this technique before for simple studio shows, but never for something like a dance.

Put all 5 of your cameras video on a separate line in your time line. Obviously, you would have to have a program with at least 5 available video lines to do this. No free program (that I know of) gives you that many lines but more sophisticated programs do.

Once you have all 5 video tracks down in the time line, then it is easy to preview them and compare them to your other shot possibilities. Then you whack out the 4 shots you don't want, leaving the one you do. But honestly, doing it this way for something like a dance would probably not make too much sense. Like I said, I've done it for simple studio shows where the shots are almost all alike and the action and dialogue all needed to be synchronized, but with something like a dance where the video changes drastically and the video does not need to be synced so precisely this method would not make much sense.

I hope this makes sense to you.

I need a camcorder?

Q. My wife and I are looking to buy a DVD camcorder at a reasonable cost (under $400) before our baby boy arrives in April. I have a few questions.....

What is mini dv and how is it different to DVD?
What brand and model offer the best quality at the best price?
What about internal memory, transferring to a PC, audio quality, etc...

This will be used mainly for home movies, but I would also use it at my bands performances as well as concerts and possibly sporting events.

A. DO NOT BUY A DVD BASED CAMCORDER.

Highest compression of the available storage formats results in lost data = poor video quality... especially if you have any intention of ever editing. The DVD based camcorders will compress into a VOB file typically not useful directly by most video editors. That typically means ripping the DVD or using the analog AV cables that come with the camcorder and transferring low-quality analog video through a analog/digital bridge.

DO NOT BUY A DVD BASED CAMCORDER.

The BEST quality video comes from camcorders that use miniDV tape (which record into DV format for standard definition video). There is very little compression applied and if your computer has a firewire port, DV can be editied by pretty much any video editing application. You will use the DV port of the camcorder connected to the firewire port of your computer - using a firewire cable (firewire, i.Link, IEEE1394 are all the same thing).

DO NOT BUY A DVD BASED CAMCORDER.

Higher video quality than DVD based and not quite miniDV tape based camcorder video quality are the hard drive and certain higher-end flash based camcorder - they typically compress a lot into a MPEG file format. Most (not all) video editors can deal with this with not additional codecs - but the translation apps are available for all editing apps to deal with them.

DO NOT BUY A DVD BASED CAMCORDER.

When you use MiniDV tape, it is your "archive". Fill a 60 minute tape, pop out the tape, put in a new one and start rolling. I can use around 5 seconds from the time I press stop, replace a tape and am recording again.

When you use a hard drive based or flash memory based camcorder, what happens when you run out of memory? You need to transfer video to a computer, delete the files from the camcorder and start shooting again. Yes, they hold menay hours of video - you have to be sure to clean it out each time - just like you need to remember to carry blank tapes.

DO NOT BUY A DVD BASED CAMCORDER.

I shoot live music videos... If your music is loud, you do not have much choice. Most low-end and mid-range camcorders do not have any manual audio control and have to rely on an auto audio leveling circuit. For the most part, this auto-audio gain mechanism cannot deal with loud music - this can be loud from a marching band or loud from amplified instruments. The resulting audio will be muddy and not usable. You can either find a Sony camcorder (DCR-HC28, DCR-HC96) that has a menu selection for normal or low gain for the audio or you can use an external device to control the gain (like a BeachTek XLR adapter - but you would be using a camcorder with a mic-in jack and XLR mics) or you can find a camcorder with manual audio control - there are none in your stated price range. The least expensive ones I know of are the Canon HV20 or Sony HDR-HC7.

DO NOT BUY A DVD BASED CAMCORDER.

Both the Sony DCR-HC28 and DCR-HC96 do not have a proper mic-in jack - they do have a Sony proprietary "active interface" shoe. Normally, that would mean you are locked into using ONLY Sony proprietary mics that work with the proprietary shoe... but, if you get http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/479976-REG/Sony_VMCK100_VMC_K100_Microphone_Adapter.html then you can use any mic or XLR adapter with a 1/8" jack. B&H is the only place these seem to exist - you can't even get them directly from Sony!

DO NOT BUY A DVD BASED CAMCORDER.

Just so you know, my current favorite equipment to use for live band recording is my Sony HDR-HC1, Audio-Technica AT-825 stereo mic and BeachTeck DXA-6 XLR adapter... If I am lucky and have an audio engineer who knows what they are doing and can send me a good discreet board mix, I prefer using that connected to my camera or a field recorder (M-Audio or Marantz or Fostex) or a DigiDesign ProTools set up and replace the camera's audio with the board mix...

Did I mention, DO NOT BUY A DVD BASED CAMCORDER.

how do you make home movies with a camcorder?
Q. I am new to camcorders. Step-by-step instructions to make home movies using a camcorder, please.

A. My own experience is that you have to do a little bit a a time.

I assume you already have you footage in your camcorder and know how to get the video into the PC.

First, capture the footage to PC. Best if you have scene detection if you're using miniDV..Choose a video editor software.

Second, organise and sort your footage according to the scenes.Delete bad footage. If there are stills, include them. Maybe put them in the same folder. For my vacation videos, I put the different scenes in different folder, even if it's from the same vacation. I do this to avoid being overwhelmed with all the footage..

Third, gather background music. Something appropriate for the occasion.

Fourth, fire up the video editor. Just import stuff only you want to edit at the moment. If you can import in separate 'bins', like in Premiere, you can import everything in but make sure everything is in order.

Fifth , edit away. Shorten scenes that is overly long and unnecessary.
In Premiere, you can gather the footages in different Sequence, eg. sequence 1, sequence 2...etc.

Lastly, render all the different sequences out if you're planning to use a DVD-authoring software, or you can render everything straight from the video editor to DVD, choose the simple DVD layout and buttons etc...

Last word, show off your work and impress all your families and friends.

car mounted camcorder?

Q. I am looking for a camera to be mainly used for road safety(standard dash-cam) but also able to be used on the outside of the car ( i also race a Arroyo seco raceway). Are there any cheaper setups, with 1080p and high speed stuff, that would work well for what i need?

A. A decent camcorder for track day to record your experience might be hard to find for all the features and flexibility that you want. Something easy to use right out of the box might be ideal. Something that films extreme sports with no learning curve, just press the record button and have fun!

Which camcorder is better canon or Sony?

Q. I want to buy a HD camcorder for home use. I found canon HF R20 in a store near me on sale for 282$, online price is around 400$, but it's an older model which is discontinued by canon and some stores still have it. I also found Sony HDRCX 190 which is around 270-300$. When I read their description they look the same to me. Is the difference in price because canon is a better brand? Is canon for 282$ a steal or is better to go with a newer Sony?

A. Hi Ms.Z:

I don't know where online you've been looking, but almost everywhere I've looked, the Canon HF-R20 is selling around that same $280 price (Canon USA currently sells it on its website for $349).

[They also sell the HF20 factory-refurbished in either Silver, Black, or Red for $249 at Canon Direct: http://shop.usa.canon.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/product_10051_10051_302514_-1 ].

Walmart & Target currently sell the Sony CX190 for $269.

I own both Sony & Canon camcorders, and both are very good brands. (Sony makes more models that are used by TV stations & networks than Canon, but Canon makes more pro-TV lenses.)

Personally, I don't think either one is that great, although you get 8Gb of internal memory with the Canon model (none in the Sony) and the Canon will hold 2 SD cards at the same time (just one with the Sony). The Sony has a longer optical zoom-factor (25x compared to Canon's 20x). But you should read a couple of reviews for each model and make your own decision:

CNet Review (May 2012) for the Sony CX190: http://reviews.cnet.com/digital-camcorders/sony-handycam-hdr-cx190/4505-6500_7-35128679.html (They didn't like the image quality, for the money. And they thought it felt "flimsy".)

CNet review {January 2011) for the Canon HF20: http://reviews.cnet.com/digital-camcorders/canon-vixia-hf-r20/4505-6500_7-34468433.html

hope this helps,

Tips & advice to buying a waterproof handheld camcorder?
Q. I am looking for a WATERPROOF HANDHELD CAMCORDER for a trip that I am going on. I need tips and advice for what to look for when buying the camcorder. It doesn't matter about cost, I just need to know the suitable quality for going on a vacation, where there is great quality of sound, good picture, can be used when snorkelling, good battery life, etc.

If anyone could give me tips, advice, or their knowledge from personal experiences on what to look for and what sort of brands are good or bad when buying them. Also websites of places I could buy one is good too. Any sort of information or websites where I can research more would be greatly appreciated too.

what is the Best HD Camcorder?

Q. What i want is the Best of the best camcorders in the market today. just camcorders not proffesional video camera.
hd,camcorder. simple as that.

A. Your question does not make sense to me.

A "camcorder" defined:
"A camcorder (video CAMera reCORDER) is an electronic device that combines a video camera and a video recorder into one unit.

In order to differentiate it from other devices that are capable of recording video, like cell phones and compact digital cameras, a camcorder is generally identified as a portable device primarily designed for video capture and recording."
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Camcorder

If you want the "best of the best" then you want a professional grade camcorder. Barring that, you will not be looking at the "best of the best". The step down from professional-grade would be "prosumer". But lets define professional grade, first... In my opinion, pro grade camcorders:
1) have lenses larger than 60mm diameter - usually 72mm.
2) have imaging chips larger than 1/4" - usually 3-chip array and more typically 1/3". Can be 3-CCD or 3-CMOS.
3) have XLR audio-in connectors.
4) record to DV or HDV or some other low-compression format (not AVCHD/MTS).
Deviate from any one of these and the grade of the camcorder drops to "prosumer".

Depending on your specific requirements, those worth investigating:
Sony HDR-FX7, HDR-FX1000, HVR-HD1000, HVR-A1.
Canon GL2

In the higher-end consumer grade area:
Canon HV40, HF and HF S series.
Sony HDR-CX500 series.

No consumer internal hard disc drives camcorders (knowm problems with vibration and altitude prevents recording video). No consumer DVD based camcorders.

Whats the best hd professional camcorder under £1500?
Q. i'm looking for a professional camcorder that records full hd. This will be used for shooting films and i need the manual focus and the auto focus. Been using a canon 60d but want something a bit better. Been looking at the canon xh a1 but that's got mixed reviews. i don't mind any make as long as it is not a consumer camcorder.

A. A "professional" camcorder will have:

* Lens filter diameter larger than 70mm;
* 3CCD or 3COMS imaging chip array 1/3" or larger;
* XLR audio inputs.

Find these and all the other stuff (separate manual zoom and manual focus rings on the lens barrel, manual audio control and lots of other manual controls easily accessible on the OUTSIDE of the camcorder) and you will have a pro-grade camcorder. Hint: unless you buy used, there is no such thing. New, the closest you can get is a prosumer like the Sony HDR-FX1000 and add a XLR adapter (from BeachTek or juiceLink).

Where can I find a Canon GL2 model camcorder? At a reasonable price...?

Q. I am looking for a Canon GL2 Mini DV 3CCD camcorder (20x optical 100x digital zoom) Can anyone tell me where I can get a good price on one?

A. If you looking for a new unit go to bhphotovideo.com they are by far the best. You might pay a few dollars more but they don't jack you around and they are also decent folks.

If your looking for a used unit you can also look on a great website called craigslist.org This website works better if your in a more of a metro area or larger city. I find some great buys on here. All I will tell you is check the camera hours before buying it.

Also do realize that the Canon GL2 is a SD camera and that is very old technology. You might want to consider one of the newer HD cameras. Sony just came out with a very nice small hand held unit that is right around 1500 dollars and gives a great image.

Should I get Canon GL1 or HV40?
Q. I'm looking for a video camera to use for video classes/personal use of making videos. I'm debating between Canon products, a used GL1 or a new HV40 as they are actually around the same price. I know the GL1 is prosumer, but the HV40 has HD and is newer. However I realize with the HV40 I will also have to purchase an external mic/adaptor lenses. As far as video production goes, for a student, which is better? (price range around $700, so any prosumer camera higher than GL1 is really out of the question) My only real qualm with the HV40 is that it's so small it may be difficult to use with a tripod or to keep it steady in general, and also that the manual focus is very inconveniently placed. As for GL1, it'd be kind of big to lug around on location, but I do love manual settings. I guess I would ultimately go for whichever would give me better control, and better quality, and better ease in filmmaking (and better sound - I hear the only mic that fits the HV40 isn't all that great). Please help, I am torn.

what is the worst camcorder producing company?

Q.

A. I work for Best Buy and I would have to say out of the brands that we carry, we probably get samsung camcorders returned the most.

what is the best camcorder company there is?
Q. i've been wanting to buy a camcorder for quite a long time. however all of the companies that ive heard of are just barely out of my price range. my sister says i should just get a digital camera and record things from there. help me. what is your opinion on the best camcorders and why are they good

A. First of all, dont buy a digital camera to use as a camcorder, you will regret it. The best brand hands down is Panasonic. Get a camera with 3CCD on it. 3CCD has to do with the coloring, and trust me, it is worth getting. Good luck, but you cant go wrong with a Panansonic.

Camcorder connected to laptop? Video Editing Software?

Q. http://www.target.com/DC210-Canon-DVD-Camcorder/dp/B000M5022O/sr=1-2/qid=1195750912/ref=sr_1_2/602-1807729-5979811?ie=UTF8&index=target&rh=k%3Advd%20camcorder&page=1

I'm thinking of asking for that for Christmas, but I want to know if you can connect that to a laptop. If so, would the cable be included with that camera (or any camcorder for that matter) or would I need to buy my own?

Also I love using photoshop for image editing, but is there an Adobe product for video editing?

A. This camcorder only comes with composite video output so it will only connect to a TV unless you have a video capture card on your laptop which most don't.

To edit the video, you'll need to take the finalized disc from this camcorder to your laptop, rip the files to your hard disk, then use which ever software you are using for video editing.

Safe video capture / recording software?
Q. I'm looking for some software to record video game sessions. I need something that's free, safe and relatively easy to use. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

A. Free? Don't waste your time as I did before. They just doesn't work properly with most games.
Finally, I am using Game Camcorder - http://gamecamcorder.com

What's the best camcorder under $700?

Q. Size is a very important issue. Less concerned with having the very best picture quality, although that's important. But it's less important than portability.

A. Go for Panasonic PV-GS150. It's a great 3CCD camcorder. I bought this few weeks ago for $550 from www.jr.com. Check out my feedback on this camera and see the size as well at http://sajeevth.blogspot.com/ (that's my blog). Those are the pictures of the one that I personally own, not taken from the net. I used to like Sony camcorders, but lately they had been making all the controls "touch screen" which is not at all convenient to make any adjustments while you shoot. The joystick control in the PV-GS150 is very convenient as well. There is a narration mic + wired remote and this indeed is a very sleek and peforming camcorder.

Camcorder $500-$700 range?
Q. I recently bought a Sony DCR-SR82 60GB camcorder, which has been returned to Best Buy. I read reviews on it, and Consumer Reports didn't have anything bad to say about it. When I was playing what I recorded back on my TV, the picture quality was horrible. The camera would lose focus every other minute. My question is what kind of camera should I buy??? I am looking for the best picture quality possible for about $500-$700.

A. Try DCR-Sr300 40 gb or 100 gb camcorder. It's about 700 to 800 around sale. It's good picture quality for light but for dark like every other camcorder, its not that great.
