Can you help me determine if this camcorder is a good buy?

Q. I need a camcorder and I'm looking at one with a 10x optical zoom. I don't know anything about camcorders so is this a good number for the optical zoom? Also, is the digital zoom number important when purchasing a camcorder? What number optical and digital zoom would be the best to get?

Please help me....I need to buy a camcorder by next Friday. Thank you!

A. What's your budget?
What are you recording?
Is it to upload to the web or watch on an HDTV?

As for the zooms, optical is the only one that matters. Digital zoom simply blows up the size of the pixels causing degradation in picture quality. On my old (circa 2001) camcorder, it gives the option to turn the digital zoom all the way off or limit it to 10x and 20x- I always leave it OFF.

As for what optical zoom number to aim for, it depends on what you're recording. A kids soccer game that you're 50ft+ away from, 10x is good. Indoor birthday parties, 5x would do.

You're budget is going to determine quality, but I would definitely try to get a 720p or 1080p HD camcorder, which range from $120 for a micro camcorder to $500 for a real 1080p camcorder.

720p SD card based micro camcorder:

supposedly on sale at Costco for $349 right now

How can I mute the microphone on my Panasonic PV-GS150 MiniDV Camcorder?
Q. I am recording soccer games and don't want the talk between me and my friends to be heard by coaches who will later review the tapes.

A. you are in luck, this camera has an external mic input. simply get a miniplug that is not wired, from radio shack, or cut the wire off of an old earphone plug. Using this "dummy plug" will mute the camera mic, and since there is no mic connected to the dummy, no audio will be recorded. when you need audio, simply pull the dummy to restore normal camera operation.

What is a good inexpensive camcorder for independent filmmakers?

Q. I'm looking for a camcorder to buy, something that will not give me the whole 'home movie' effect and feel to it. I will also need a tripod so it won't be shakey and all that but could you just tell me some good inexpensive camcorders that will give me what i'm looking for. I don't know much about camcorders and lenses but i'm looking into it. If anyone can help me with brands and prices of camcorders to look into I will be very thankful.

-M

A. By "something that will not give me the whole 'home movie' effect and feel," I think your talking about the film-look. It can be replicated, through either software or in-camera. However, both these options are pretty expensive, and it doesn't sound like you have that much money right now. I'll get to that later, but for now I'm going to talk about cameras.

I dont know your budget, but from what you said, Im guessing you want a camera probably $800 or below (correct me if I'm wrong, and I'll re write this). In that price range, I cant recommend any particular camera, but follow these rules and you should have a pretty good beginner filmmaking camera:

1. Get miniDV- pretty obvious isn't it?
2. Look for a lot of manual functions- every cam has auto functions, but look for the ability to switch to manual focus, iris, shutter, etc.
3. 3ccds are better than 1
4. The newest isnt always the greatest- not really a rule but basically dont go and get the newest thing that just came out

Other plusses are mic ports, headphone ports, hot shoes, and optical image stabilizer.

If you get a tripod, get one with a fluid head. I'm not recommending a particular one, but look around on google. To tell you the truth, Im not exactly a pro on tripods. But a useful trick that you can do with your tripod is screw on your camera, and instead of opening up the legs, hold the legs together and walk with it. If you do it right, the tripod will absorb the shake from your hands giving you a very cheap steadicam effect.

I hope this helped, and I'm a filmmaker as well, and I always like meeting other filmmakers so feel free to contact me at evilgenius4930@yahoo.com

What camcorder should i use to make a skate video?
Q. I want to buy a camcorder that does not get all blurry when you go fast, but i want it to be $250 or under.

A. I purchased a 30 minute Flip camera and am very happy. Used to be a video news photographer and am very impressed with this device. No sd card to remove and there is a 60 minute also available. Also currently there is a flood of handheld DVR camcorders now emerging. I do know that my personal minimum standard for good video is 640x480 avi recording. Not to be confused with 640x480 resolution. Flip cameras about $90.00. Also type 640x480 spy camera into ebay or yahoo or google. Anything less than 640x480 will blur a bit with movement.

what camcorder should i get for 250 dollars?

Q. I have 250 dollars what camcorder should i get... and please don't say i should save up for a more expensive one.

A. I like the Canon ZR950. You can find them priced from $230 - $275 depending upon where you shop on the web. A word about that, be very careful about buying on the web, especially camcorders/cameras. There are many slick web sites with great camcorder prices, but you will get ripped off. I would stick to Circuit City, Buydig, Newegg, or B&H photo (B & H photo is the best). I still prefer mini dv tapes over newer hard drive or DVD camcorders. I find less problems when it comes to editing, function and overall performance when working with tapes - it's a personal thing. Even with more inexpensive camcorders it comes down to you controlling the camcorder, and not letting the camcorder control you. That is, even on less expensive camcorders you can control focus and exposure (not all but many of them). Granted, this doesn't have a focus ring, like more expensive camcorders, but it does have a menu where you can control focus and aperature/exposure settings. Yes, many of these camcorders do a fine job when set to automatic - and do well with automatic focus and automatic exposure control. I still think it's improtant to take the time to learn what the camcorder can really do. Many of these less expensive cameras look fine in outdoor lighting but stuggle a bit with low indoor lighting (if the lighting is dark), but that can be easily fixed indoors by simply turning on more lights/light or adding a table lamp or floor lamp. It's not necessary for most people to go out an buy "movie" lights. it's just a matter of being aware of your surroundings when shooting. Many people complain that their camcorder footage looks "grainy" or "dark" inside, but in some cases you need to add some light in the room. The camcorder industry advertises LOW lux or low light ratings, or that the camcorder will perform miracles inside in low lighting, but every manufacturer is different in their ratings and how they view their specific camcorder.

But, with that said, I like the Canon ZR950 for the price, and it's a good value. If you have any money left over, buy yourself a tripod.

Please recommend brand names for the cheapest camcorder with a decent zoom lens?
Q. I want to record dog show rings and this often requires being at a distance. I know nothing about camcorders so any information would be appreciated, Thanks.

A. Here's a helpful camcorder buying guide:

This should give you a good idea of what features to look for in a camcorder. Then a good place to start is with the ratings guide - look for the highest rated camcorder in your budget range:

What mid-priced HD camcorder records has best video quality?

Q. I am looking for a mid-priced HD camera (500-600 max) to make shorts to develop my point of view as an aspiring film maker. I am not concerned with sound quality because all I will be focusing on music videos. I realize the more expensive ones would do a better job but considering its a Christmas present I really need it in that price range. Also, what features would be best to look for?

A. There are many great HD camcorders available but not many around your price range (unless you check eBay, craigslist, etc. for used). Check some of the camcorder review websites, like videoguys.com, etc.

Even though you say sound quality is not important, you should consider one with and external mic capability. Many cameras do and/or they are proprietary to function with only they’re same brand mics.

How to use the camera function on my camcorder?
Q. I JUST BOUGHT a Blue Vivitar 508HND - 1080p digital camcorder. I'm a first time user, I've never worked with a camcorder like this before. But I know that 1080p is a really good quality for video and it also has a camera function on there. I wanted to know how can I take a professional looking HD photo with my camcorder?? What would be some good angles to use to get it to come out the right kind of way?

A. "Megapixel count" is a measurement used for digital still images.

Video resolution is measured using horizontal line count.

480 horizontal line = "standard definition" video.

720 or 1080 horizontal lines is "high definition" video.

Using this (the first number represents the number of pixel columns on the imaging chip; we already determined the second number represents the horizontal rows) to get to "megapixel count" results in:

640 x 480 (4:3 aspect ratio standard def video) = 307,200 or almost 1/3 megapixel

1280 x 720 (16:9 aspect ratio high definition video) = 921,600 or almost 1 megapixel

1440 x 1080 (16:9 aspect ratio high definition video) = 1,555,200 or about 1.5 megapixels

1920 x 1080 (16:9 aspect ratio high definition video) = 2,073,600 or about 2 megapixels

The digital still capture section of the image capture device uses the imaging chip very differently from the way the video section of the image capture device uses the imaging chip... And this is only one, of several, ways video "quality" is determined. The compression applied to the video when captured and stored makes a HUGE difference. For example (an extreme one to be sure), a standard definition, low compression, camcorder like a Panasonic AG-DVX100 will capture much better video than a high definition, high compression, video capture device like a cell-phone/smartphone... especially when the playback screen is large.

Lighting, fast action, use of a steadying device and many other factors also contribute to "video quality" or "photo quality".

As for how to take photos with your Vivitar 508 HND - link to the manual:
http://www.vivitar.com/files_products/417/DVR_508_Camera_Manual.pdf
Photo capture starts on page 18.

"Good angles" depends on your requirements and the subject. Camcorders are not designed to capture digital still images - this is a secondary convenience feature. This is similar to using a digital still capture device to capture video - they are not designed for this and video capture is a secondary convenience feature for digital still images. If photos are important, then use a digital still image capture device, not a camcorder.

Since a "professional camera" would be more typically a SLR or dSLR with interchangeable lens system starting in the $2,000 range (including a couple of decent lenses) and this camcorder is none of these, you are setting an unreasonable expectation of the equipment you have.

Where can I find a memory card for my camcorder?

Q. I have a Jazz Dv153 pocket camcorder and it needs a 2gb memory card. I looked all over Ebay and I couldn't find one. Are there any other websites that sell these types of memory cards?

A. The Jazz DV153 uses SD (Secure Digital) or MMC (Multi Media Card) 2GB cards which are very common and are available at retailers such as Walmart, Bestbuy, RadioShack, etc. Or on-line at amazon.com, Buy.com, etc. Brands like Kingston, SanDisk, PNY are are well known brands. Some cards sold on Ebay are import non-brand cards and may not meet industry standards and thus the integrity of such cards will be in question. You want to trust that your video is safe on a brand name card.

What's the best mini camcorder I can get for 300 dollars and where can I get it?
Q. I have a budget of 300 dollars for a mini camcorder. I want the best I can find and I need to know who carries it for that price.

A. JVC mini-DV

Get it at:
WalMart
Best Buy
Circuit City

$299.00 When you see a JVC at that price, you'll know what I am talking about. I have one.

Auto and Manual modes. Flip LCD screen, or if you like the traditional view finder (eye-piece) it has that too.

Takes pictures too, onto a SD memory card.

Transfer the video to PC via FireWire and edit the files and make DVDs with special software.

Tapes are cheap and can be used safely up to 10 times (as with ANY mini-DV camcorder).

IT HAS ATTACKED A SMALL DOG,AND ATTEMPTED TO ENTER OUR HOME THROUGH THE FRONT DOOR. IT WAS TRYING TO GET MY LAB AND MY BASSETTE HOUND. WE CALL THE DOG WARDEN, BUT THIS DOG KEEPS COMING AROUND AND TRYING TO KILL OUR DOGS, WHAT CAN I DO NEXT??

A. Call the police. It is an aggressive dog and is a threat. If you have a camera or a camcorder, document the dog running loose and being aggressive (use the date-stamp feature if you have one, to provide more information).

Look into your local and state laws and see what the laws are regarding dangerous/vicious dogs. Submit letters to the police documenting these incidents and ask them to do something about it, quoting the statutes as necessary.

Atheists--How do you explain this Catholic communion host that turned into a human heart--captured on video?
Q. http://en.gloria.tv/?media=135990

Miracle captured on video by Daniel Sanford of New Jersey. On 11/13/98, as part of the pilgrimage, he went to see the Bleeding Host of Betania at the Chapel of the Augustinian Nuns in Los Teques. The Spiritual Director, Father Mazzarella, said Daily Mass. When they finished, he opened the Tabernacle door, which contained the Bleeding Host. The Host was in flames, bleeding, and there was a pulsating heart bleeding in the center of the Host. Daniel watched this for about 30 seconds or so, then the Host returned to normal. HOWEVER, He did manage to film this miracle with his camcorder!
I thought it was pretty good PaulCyp. How should I try to evangelize people?
I believe people are atheists partially because they have a refusal to believe in miracles. I believe if I can show a miracle to them then they may be more apt to believe.

A. I like this incredible miracle which has no scientific explanation yet. "Safe in the Midst of Hiroshima Nuclear Blast" hhttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xx2MRo3M3Fs (Youtube video comes from a real document from the time of Hiroshima atomic bomb).
http://www.cddc.vt.edu/host/atomic/hiroshim/intervu1.html
http://www.cddc.vt.edu/host/atomic/hiroshim/siemes.html

About Eucharistic miracles, you have plenty which cannot be explained easily where the host became flesh and stay that way for centuries as Lanciano Eucharistic miracle. It has been checked out by scientists too who said it was a part of the heart AB+ (check the link for more details http://www.therealpresence.org/eucharst/mir/lanciano.html
And the more recent one in Buenos Aires in 1996. http://cathnews.co.nz/2013/04/26/popes-part-in-eucharistic-miracle-revealed/ http://theholyfaceofjesus.wordpress.com/2013/05/01/eucharistic-miracle-in-argentina/ http://eponymousflower.blogspot.ie/2013/04/pope-investigated-and-possibly.html

What type of camera should a beginner filmmaker use?

Q. Should a beginner filmmaker use a Film camera (super 8 or 16mm), Videotape, or digital?

A. It depends how serious you are... film can get expensive - between the film, processing, possibly digitizing for editing... adding audio (use a field recorder from Zoom, M-Audio, Edirol, Fostex, among others) and synching - but it is the closest to how many big screen films continue to be done today (but with cameras from PanaVision, Arri, VariCam, CineAlta, among others)...

Step 1: Set a budget.

"Video tape"? No too much analog tape around. If you are referring to miniDV, DVCPRO, SD/HD/XDCAM tape formats, all are as digital as hard disc drive (HDD) or flash memory - much lesss compress than HDD or flash, and continue to be professional's choice for a wide range of uses... and is the recommended path to start with. The "DV" in miniDV = Digital Video". Just because it is tape does not mean it is not digital.

If you are referring to consumer grade HDD or flash memory (or DVD) based camcorders - that would not be the recommended path. Too much compresion on the video stream results in discarded video information and results in reduced video quality.

Since miniDV tape is common, cheap and currently captures the least compressed video formats (DV/HDV) when compared to its HDD and flash memory siblings), I would suggest this would be the appropriate path. As your sophistcation grows, you could move to an external hard drive (like those from Focus Enhancements - in the FireStore series) or investigate camcordrs that use flash memory like the Panasonic AG-HVX200 or Sony HVR-Z7... (all of which continue to record to DV/HDV formats).

But... when you boil it down, it is all about content - and if the content is REALLY compelling, then what equipment was used or how that content was captured can be irrelevant.

What type of cameras do modern films use?
Q. I'm talking about films that were shot from the years 2000-2007. Super 8? 16 mm? Please give me ideas. Thanks.

A. You can check out Panavision - http://www.panavision.com/product_category.php?cat=1
They have 35mm, 16mm, and HD
They are very expensive and use film of course.

There are other camcorders like the Panasonic AJ-HDC27H for $45K - http://catalog2.panasonic.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ModelDetail?displayTab=O&storeId=11201&catalogId=13051&itemId=94208&catGroupId=14569&surfModel=AJ-HDC27H
(hopefully that link works - it is insanely long!)

Some are made with camcorders that cost a lot less like the Panasonic AG-HVX200 for $6K. This would be used for a lower budget movie, not a King Kong type movie. This also uses a MiniDV tape to record the media (or P2 Cards/memory cards), whereas the others use film.

What camcorder would be good for beginners and short films?

Q. I'm looking for a camcorder that would be a good starter kind of thing. I want to be a director when i grow up, so I just want a good camcorder to practice with. I need a camcorder that has good altitude and depth. I just want something that would look legit, not some crappy version that makes the video look like it was filmed in the 80's. Please help. The highest I can go with the price is $300. Thanks guys.

A. I have a Flip mini HD. The video quality is great, and the sound is above average I'd say.

This video I posted in the web source section was made with my Flip camcorder.

It was a school project. There were no extra mics or anything so everything you see and hear are from the camera.
I recommend the Flip, but I would only get the HD version. They might be cheaper than what you are looking for though. An 8gb Mini HD will only run you about $140

What camcorder takes the best video in the dark?
Q. I am trying to find a camcorder to buy for ghost hunting which requires being in the dark... What camera is the best quality dark shot?

A. Hi C!
I think its cool you're ghost hunting. It's been a passion of mine for the past 2 years. I work in an old school building that some suspect is haunted. I have taken some interesting video footage there and submitted it to some ghost video sites.
To get back to your question, I use the JVC GZ-HD300A Everio 60GB Hard Drive Camcorder. I've used other inferior cameras which are fine in the daylight but this cam has the best twilight and night mode out there.
Believe me, I know how it feels to miss a chance at filming something amazing because I don't have the right camera. You can find this camcorder at http://offto.net/onsalecom/ for a very competitive price.
Just search "camcorders" and click "JVC"
I got it from their site after shopping around. They shipped it quick and reliably and their customer service is excellent.
Good luck, and drop me a line and let me know if you catch anything paranormal on film.

All the best, Jimmy

How can I upload pictures and videos from canon legria hfr205 to a mac?

Q. I bought this camcorder thinking that I will be able for echoed videos and then show it to everyone.. When I tried to do it on a mac it's saying that it can't read the program.

A. You did not tell us which Mac, which version OSX or what application your are trying to use to get to the video.

The Canon Legria (PAL localized - the Vixia is NTSC localized) HF R205 is a great entry level consumer camcorder that records very compressed AVCHD format video to MTS (or M2TS) files.

We'll need this (link to the camcorder manual):
http://gdlp01.c-wss.com/gds/8/0300005308/01/LEGRIA_HFR26_R27_R28_R205_R206_UserGuide_EN_1.0.pdf

Your Mac does not need - and cannot use - the software that was included in the box with the camcorder. For that matter, neither do computers on Windows, but Windows users *think* they need it...

Assuming your Mac is relatively new, you have two options:

1) Connect the camcorder's USB port to the Mac's USB port and turn the camcorder on. Put the camcorder into video Playback mode (see page 28 in the manual). If any applications (like iPhoto) start, after they are "stable" quit them. Launch iMovie. Under "File", select Import or Capture. Follow the prompts...

If this does not work,

2) If the memory appears on the Mac's desktop, you can locate the video files in the folders... You can copy the MTS files to your Mac.
DO NOT CHANGE the names of the files on the camcorder's memory card;
DO NOT MOVE the files on the on the camcorder's memory card;
DO NOT USE THE COMPUTER to delete the files on the camcorder's memory card.

Just copy the the MTS files to your Mac's hard drive...

If this does not work,

3) Use a card reader. Take the memory card out of the camcorder, put it into a card reader connected to the computer. As indicated in option 2, copy the MTS files to your Mac.
DO NOT CHANGE the names of the files on the camcorder's memory card;
DO NOT MOVE the files on the on the camcorder's memory card;
DO NOT USE THE COMPUTER to delete the files on the camcorder's memory card.

Just copy the the MTS files to your Mac's hard drive...

+++

In the case of options 2 and 3, if you want to playback the video, Quicktime cannot do that. Download and install VLC Player from www.videoLAN.org.

If you want to edit the video, you will need to transcode (convert) the MTS files to MOV or MP4 files so iMovie can deal with them. MPEG Streamclip from www.squared5.com is a good transcoder there are many others. After the video is converted, launch iMovie and either drag the converted file to the library or use the "Import Movie" command (under "File") to bring them in to the iMovie video editing application.

Amateur movie making professional camcorder suggestion?

Q. I'm looking to buy a professional movie making camcorder. I have looked around I have been on Google and I have entered top 10 best movie making camcorders. They don't really lower my searches down. I'm looking for something that has good sound quality. Something that takes good videos inside and outside. Something that i can use to enter film festivals with and stuff like that. I was also wondering if anybody knew any good movie making software. Thanks to all that can help me.

A. Camcorders which use Mini Digital Video tapes (popularly called mini DV) are the best. Such camcorder records digital video on tape. A Mini DV camcorder captures video in what is known as Real Time format and thereby stores more detail than camcorders which uses DVD, flash memory and hard disc.

Videos shot from cameras other than that which uses tape/Mini DV, are not meant for editing. As such they don't help in making videos worth keeping for future.

All Hollywood videos are shot with cameras which uses tape like Mini DV.
Besides, getting familiar with tapes also helps in going professional as all professional cameras use tapes, not DVD or hard disc or flash memory.

Personally, I'm using a Sony HDR HC9E for making semi-professional videos.
Sony HDR HC9E which is HD is a simi professional camera and it is moderately priced.
You may view the rusult of this cam at my youtube page:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k-_HjbHU73A
(This video is only the compressed format in flv)

My other camera is Sony DCR HC27. Its really a cheap one which shoots great video.
You can go for the latest Sony camcorders which has the series "DCR HC__".
The DCR HC__ series are real cheap yet captures great Video that even TV stations accepts footages taken by this mini DV cam.

Whats a good camcorder for real filmmaking?
Q. I need a good camcorder for real movie making. Not to make little video with your frindes but a real movie. I can wait till blackfriday when stuff go cheap. i just need a good camera for filmaking and entering in filmaking competitions for under 200 dollars. And is the JVC everio ms-120 or 130 a good camer for what a want? Please help

A. You're gonna ned to up your budget. $200 isn't even in the running for a basic camera let alone any actual filmaking. The editing software can cost 4 -5 times that. You need to be a little more realistic with your expectations and do some searches for what cameras cost. You would need to spend about $2000 at the low end just for the camera. Not trying to discourage you but take a look at the Canon and Sony cameras (high-end) and then price Adobe Premiere Pro or Avid. Then determine how you will learn to use these apps. If you're serious, you'll need to learn a real editing app and not Movie Maker. Good Luck

Needing help in picking a new camcorder and what type to buy?

Q. I am looking to purchase a new camcorder. I currently own a panasonic VHS-C camcorder. Right now I am recording on these tapes and then dubbing them with my DVD recorder.
I run my own website and I want to put videos on my website. Here is what I would need:
- Good night recording, for fireworks and such
- Good day quality recording
- Image stabilization
- Good sound recording
- Fairly easy to use
- Prefer small over large body
- Ability to put video onto website pretty easily, not a must
- Good battery life
- Good zoom

Still photos are not important to me.

I heard that with Mini DV you can plug into DVD recorder with a cable and record the video onto the DVD. I was originally looking into a DVD-cam, but the DVD-cam reviews don't seem to be good. I don't know which I should get. I'm also not sure which models are the best.

I prefer to stay under $400, so I would like to know the best models under $400, I'm willing to go higher, so better models would be welcome.
Editing is not something I will need to do with my video, so I don't think that a hard drive cam is right for me.

The most important things for me is the overall video quality, something that record good/great in most situations.

Second, I want to be able to get my video on media that is universal. This is why the DVD cam interested me at first, but have since changed my mind based on reviews. But I heard on TV that there is a cable that can be plugged into my DVD player and I can record directly from the camera to DVD. Is this true and if so, is this cable included?

Any more advice on what camera to get would really be appreciated. I'm trying to get an idea of my options before I make my purchase.

Samsung camcorder videos are in MP4 format. Is there software available to get these burned to a DVD?

Q. I don't use facebook, flicker or u-tube so I would like to get videos from camcorder to DVD so I can share them with family. Samsung compresses these to MP4 format. Is there software available to do this or am I just sol.

A. Well, the answer is definitely Yes. To get your Samsung MP4 videos onto a DVD, you will need a DVD burning software to do the job. Since MP4 is quite a popular video format, I guess most DVD burning software will be able to work with MP4 videos. Anyway, I use a DVD Creator which is very easy to burn MP4 videos to DVD disc. And it works great. Then I can share my videos with my family members and friends through DVD player connected to TV. Why not give it a try. Right, you may download the tool at: http://www.video-dvd-converter.net/dvd-creator/index.html

Best of luck.

Is there a free way to copy MOD video files to a dvd disk?
Q. If I would have known that it was a hastle to copy home movies from my canon fs-10 camcorder to dvd I would have purchased something else. I am trying to transfer some MOD video files from my computer to DVD and you cant seem to do it without some type of software. Do any of you know any freeware that lets you do it or do you have to pay for all of them?

A. What camcorder/editing software do you recommend for a film studies student with about £400 overall budget?
Q. I use windows vista, and have no background knowledge of digital camcorders or editing software. Shop assistants have recommended the Canon FS200 SD, and Magix Movie Edit Pro, but I am doubtful about them - the Magix software seems a bit basic, and I have read reviews that the camcorder is 'too shaky', has 'bad picture quality' and is 'incompatible with most editing software. Does anyone have any advice?

What is the best mini camcorder out there?

Q. My husband purchased a Sony Bloggie Touch and it does not focus very well and is a bit grainy. We're looking for a mini camcorder (HD) which will also allow us to use it in areas with poor lighting. Any suggestions?

Many thanks in advanced!!
No we are not planning on using it in the bedroom.. Bored much?

A. Consumer level HD camcorders have 3 problems. 1) Blurry, fuzzy, out of focus areas closely around people in videos taken by consumer level HD camcorders. 2) Any movement, even a wave or lifting an arm, while in front of a recording consumer level HD camcorder, results in screen ghosts and artifacts being left on the video track, following the movement. Makes for bad video, sports videos are unwatchable. 3) Mandatory maximum record times - 1 hour, 30 minutes, 8 minutes, 3 minutes – four different times advertised as maximum record time for some consumer level HD camcorders. No event I have ever been to is that short. Either take multiple camcorders or pack up with out getting the end of the event on video.

With a MiniDV tape camcorder, record 60 or 90 minutes ( camcorder settings), 90 seconds or less to change a tape and record for 60 or 90 more and repeat till you run out of tapes.

You can get a Canon ZR960 for $250. It is a MiniDV tape camcorder, has a Mic jack. You need a firewire (IEEE1394) card ($25 to 30) for the computer and a firewire cable (less than 10) to be able to transfer video to your computer. To say this is not HD, think about this. It would cost in excess of $3500 to get a HD camcorder that could equal the video Quality of a $250 Canon MiniDV tape camcorder.

What Would be a Good Camcorder for me at Walmart or any Other Place?
Q. My ideal camcorder would have great motion processing and good image stabilization. I plan on recording breakdancing, freerunning, tricking, and skateboarding so I would need those to be a necessity in the camcorder.
HD and good resolution would also be good.
Price I would like is to be around 200$ or lower. Not sure if this is actually feasible at a normal consumer market, but if it there's a camera even similar I would like to know please.

A. Getting a HD camcorder is taking a step backward in Video Quality. HD camcorders Interpolate the video, which means of every 25 frames of video, 4 or 5 frames are taken by the lens assembly, the other frames in between these are filled in by the camcorder inner circuitry, thus giving you not true video. HD camcorders interpolate the video, which means of every 25 frames of video, 4 or 5 frames are taken by the lens assembly; the other frames in between these are filled in by the camcorder inner circuitry, thus giving you not true video. It looks like this -one frame from the lens assembly, 7or 8 from the electronic circuitry, one frame from the lens assembly, 7or 8 from the electronic circuitry, one frame from the lens assembly, 7or 8 from the electronic circuitry, one frame from the lens assembly, 7or 8 from the electronic circuitry, from front to back of the video. Near impossible to edit, even when you have the Multi processor computer with the big Graphics and sound cards that is required to edit, view, watch and work with the files a HD camcorder produces.

MiniDV is currently the most popular format for consumer digital camcorders. MiniDV camcorders are typically more affordable than their HDD and DVD counterparts. Each MiniDV tape will typically hold an hour of footage at normal recording speed and quality. MiniDV tapes are available for purchase at not only electronic and camera stores, but also at drugs stores and grocery stores, making them easy to find while your on vacation. There are literally hundreds of MiniDV camcorders available; both in standard and high-definition. And add the fact that to get a HD camcorder that could produce better video quality footage, one would have to spend in excess of $3500 for that camcorder that could produce higher quality video.

What are the best quality HD camcorders that are compatible with macs?

are there any camcorders that i can buy so i can edit video on my macbook without the firewire port?
Q. I bought a macbook a year go and it was one without a firewire port. I'd like to buy a camcorder but most I've seen, need to have the firewire port on your mac to import the video. Are there any camcorders that I can buy and be able to edit the video on my mac without needing a firewire port? Thanks.

A. Pretty much any flash memory or hard disc drive camcorder has no firewire port and video files are copied over USB - then converted with a toll like MPEG StreamClip
http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/video/mpegstreamclip.html
for standard definition video files in mgp or mod files...

Or, if high definition, using iMovie '08 or newer for dealing with AVCHD/MTS video file types. Older iMovie versions won't deal with AVCHD/MTS files.

MiniDV tape camcorders are the only ones currently available - I know of - that do DV/HDV from the camcorder to the computer using firewire...

Whats the best Professional camcorder to buy between 1000$ and 1800$?

Q. I am planing to shoot a movie, I am having a DSLR but i need something PRO now in the field of Video.
I am thinking of buying a camcorder which is HD, has SD card slot, Supports external Mic input and has a audio output too ( headphones out). Please help me out in this, it is really important. Any company would do if they fill my requirements.
What exactly I am looking in "professional camcorder" is
Manual Focus, Aperture, Iris and with other Manual settings
Audio Input and Output
Handheld
Saves video in SD cards
High Definition
if the camcorder is giving me all of these features i consider it worth buying.

A. My definition of a "professional camcorder":

Lens diameter = 70mm or larger;
Imaging chip is 3CCD (or 3CMOS) = 1/3" or larger;
Audio connections are XLR connectors;
Low compression video format and storage.

When you get these, all the other useful stuff: Manual focus ring, manual zoom ring, manual audio gain control on the outside of the camcorder (not buried in a menu), LANC port, neutral density filter/selection; access to manual iris/aperture, shutter, exposure, white balance on the outside of the camcorder (not buried in a menu), headphone jack, are "included".

There is no high definition video capturing "professional camcorder", new, that meets these requirements in your price range. The closest one is the prosumer Sony HDR-FX1000 when a XLR adapter (beachTek or juicedLink) is added... Or a Canon XHA1.

There are several that miss the lens diameter, do not have a LANC, have only a 1/8" (3.5mm) stereo audio input. They may even be part of a manufacturer's "pro" line... but they are prosumer only. Some have the XLR connectors, headphone jack and maybe even a LANC - but other external controls are missing.

If your definition of "professional camcorder" is different from the first paragraph, please let us know so we can make appropriate suggestions.

Is there an adapter for a camcorder that has no external mic input for it to accept an external mic.?
Q. I have a JVC GZ-MG330 camcorder, its a very nice camcorder but the down side is it has no external mic input, and i was wondering if there is an adapter or something that could make accept an external mic.
Thanks in advance to anyone who answers.

A. Nope....but your best bet is to use a separate recorder anyway. Consumer-grade camcorders don't record audio that well. Even if you could use an external mic, you would want a good quality one. I use a Zoom H4n recorder with a Sure mic and then mate the audio with my video in post. Much better.

I am looking to buy a digital camcorder. Which brand and model should I buy and not buy from?

Q. I will be using it to record family moments, short videos or events. Not for professional use. I'm really newb when it comes to this. Also the camera should have good quality recording. not some 240p video. And must be able to record long periods of time, preferably.

A. Hi Joash, and welcome back to Yahoo!Answers:

First, when asking a shopping-related question, it helps to give us a budget figure (in either US Dollars or whatever currency you are accustomed to dealing with in Singapore). Camcorder prices span a wide price range, from a don't-waste-your-money under-$100 USD model to many thousands of dollars pro-level gear.

For practical "family moments" style shooting, stick to a reliable and well-made brand like Sony, Canon, JVC, Panasonic, etc. Avoid no-name Asian import models, or now-cheap rubber-stamp brands like Polaroid or Vivitar (both of which used to represent quality USA brands; now the names are licensed to cheap import cameras). Kodak "PlaySport"/"PlayTouch" and Cisco "Flip" camcorders are all discontinued, although still available from dealers and online closeout sellers. I wouldn't buy one of these "orphaned" models, since customer support will disappear after a year or two.

Feel free to post an "Additional Details" update to your Question, using the Action Bar menu below your post (mouse-over the blue Edit menu "pencil icon"), and tell us how much you wish to spend. Then we can recommend specific models & brands in your price range.

Also, tell us what sort of computer (Mac or PC) you have or plan to use, if editing or uploading your videos will be important. Otherwise, if just showing your raw video clips on a home TV screen is all you want to do, having an HDMI or other easy A/V-out connection will be important.

hope this helps,
--Dennis C.

Which "point and shoot" digital camera has the most features and takes the best quality pictures?
Q. I 'm hoping to hear from people who really know alot about the new point and shoot cameras on the market today.
I am in the market for a new camera to take on my first cruise.
I would like suggestions on up to $500.
Thank you.
(I am not worried about the camera taking videos, as I have a separate camcorder for that because I believe one cannot do justice for both pics and video).
Was going to get the Sony Cybershot model DSCW170, with 5X optical zoom and 10.1 mp, but heard few times that Sony 's need repair too often and that scared me off? I don't want to have a camera that is going to break down on me, so suggest cameras that last, please. Thank you.

A. Most cruises will offer a DVD of the cruise and include many of the passengers and their activities. You should have a chance to see the DVD and buy a copy if you like the results. Your picture looks like you are on a cruise! Bon Voyage!

While most cameras take video, and some camcorders take photos; to get the best of both, you need both. Have not seen a camera that compares with the video from a camcorder and camcorders can't take good quality photos. Suggest the least expensive Canon Camcorder and the Canon A590IS camera.
http://www.usa.canon.com/consumer/controller?act=ModelInfoAct&fcategoryid=174&modelid=16172#ModelFeaturesAct ...

In new cameras, look for a viewfinder (LCD invisible in bright sun), optical image stabilizer, and check battery prices. High mega pixel settings take longer to process and may not be needed unless required for very large pictures. Maximum print size for a 3 mega pixel setting is 8 x 10 inches. Click links below for more details.

What gives a camera its picture quality?
It is mostly the skill of the photographer that produces high quality pictures. The lens and camera are very important, but the ability to set the scene, adjust the cameras settings, and hold the camera very still or use a tripod with auto or remote shutter actuation when required is what gets the great pictures. Megapixel resolution is about potential output size, not image quality.

The Canon A590IS is a slightly older model that is available everywhere at great sale prices. Think it is a great camera and a best buy. It has auto focus, a viewfinder, optical image stabilization, and uses rechargeable NiMH batteries.
http://www.imaging-resource.com/PRODS/A590IS/A590ISA.HTM ...
http://bountii.com/deal-1523871-canon-powershot-8-0-megapixel.html ...

There is no one particular place to get great buys, but you may see something above that really helps you find the best buy. Click on the second link in the information above for an example then search for your camera of choice at the upper left. Camera prices at this link change often.

For expanded wide angle or telephoto capabilities, the A590 IS is compatible with Canon's accessory lens adapters: A small button next to the lens bezel is actually a latch; press it and you can remove the bezel ring, exposing a bayonet mount for accessory lenses. Canon offers the WC-DC52 0.7x wide-angle lens, the TC-DC52A telephoto lens, the 250D 52mm closeup lens separately, along with the LA-DC52G adapter to mount them on the camera. (Note that the wide, tele, and macro lenses all need the LA-DC52G adapter to mount them to the camera. The lenses won't work by themselves.)

This could be the best slim line camera with a viewfinder and ... It's PINK, but it uses a $49.50 Series G Rechargeable 960mAh lithium-ion battery.
http://shopping.yahoo.com/p:Sony%20Cyber-shot%20DSC-W150%2FR%20Digital%20Camera:1995337750;_ylc=X3oDMTB0bjZzaWNuBF9TAzk2NjMyOTA3BHNlYwNmZWVkBHNsawNlbGVj ...
http://www.digitalcamerareview.com/default.asp?newsID=3462&review=sony+cybershot+w150 ...

CAUTION Do not overcharge! Batteries can be damaged. Use an automatic two or more hour Energizer Compact smart charger with temperature monitor, trickle charge technology, and safety timer ($9.76) at Walmart. Use pre-charged 2000mAh Duracell ($12.97) or RayOVac ($5.97) batteries (hold charge one year) and a full cycle charge. To preserve battery charge, use the viewfinder.

CAUTION To prevent memory card corruption, keep batteries charged and don't delete. Wait for lights to stop flashing then turn camera off before removing memory. For card readers, double click Safely Remove Hardware. Select, then click Stop and OK.

Lots of great camera tips in this link.
http://www.danscamera.com/Learning/going_digital/#resolution ...

My camera has 5.2 megapixel, but I use 3 most of the time because it gives great results, is faster, and takes less memory. Also, it only has a 3 x optical zoom and 7 x digital zoom. I never use the digital zoom because making pictures larger works better on the computer. This is an old camera, but everyone is impressed with the quality pictures it takes ... like magic.

Check with the Geeks in several stores and compare prices. Once you select a camera, read all about it in the owner's manual. You can view owners manuals at this link, but will need to Login. http://www.retrevo.com/s/digital+camera ...

The source links show most of the cameras out there with prices and make digital cameras work better with help on cleaning camera and battery electrical contacts.

Can I use a different brand other than a Sony memory card for a Sony camcorder?

Q. I just ordered a Sony Handycam HD 5X Optical Zoom 2.5 in. LCD Camcorder - Purple, and I wanted to know if I could use some other brand of memory card than Sony. Like, could I use a SanDisk?

A. You have to buy a memory stick. I used a lexar memory stick in my sony camera. As long as it's a memory stick and not an xd or sd or sdhc, then you should be ok.

Is there a microphone compatible with the DCR-HC52 sony handycam camera?
Q. I have a Sony DCR-HC52 Handycam camera and I can't find a mic (online) that is compatible with it! Does anyone know where I could find one?

A. The entry-level Sony DCR-HC52 has no way to connect an external mic. There is no 1/8" mic jack and it does not have an Active Interface Shoe to connect a Sony proprietary AIS mic. It also does not do AV-in so you cannot connect a mic to the RCA audio jacks - and USB or DV port won't work, either. Sorry to tell you all this.

The cheapest Sony with a 1/8" mic jack is the HDR-HC9. It also has manual audio control.

The cheapest camcorders with a mic jack (and no manual audio control are the Aiptek GVs, Canon ZR900, ZR930, FS10 and FS11. None of them have manual audio control, either.

So... the "workaround" is to use an external audio capture device - sometimes referred to as a "field recorder". M-Audio, Zoom, Edirol, Tascam, Marantz, Sony and others make decent ones. When you edit the video, just replace the camcorder's audio with the audio captured by the field recorder.

How do camcorders and cameras capture and recorde things?

Q. I know how a camera and camcorder work and so on...
But i want to know how they found away to actually make the camera and camcorder capture your movements and pix?its amazing if you think about how a camcorder can record you until you can be rewatch later....See i want to know how does that work? How did they thought of things like that and what is it made of.

Anyone understand that?

A. Photography is undoubtedly one of the most important inventions in history -- it has truly transformed how people conceive of the world. Now we can "see" all sorts of things that are actually many miles -- and years -- away from us. Photography lets us capture moments in time and preserve them for years to come.

The basic technology that makes all of this possible is fairly simple. A still film camera is made of three basic elements: an optical element (the lens), a chemical element (the film) and a mechanical element (the camera body itself). As we'll see, the only trick to photography is calibrating and combining these elements in such a way that they record a crisp, recognizable image.

There are many different ways of bringing everything together. In this article, we'll look at a manual single-lens-reflex (SLR) camera. This is a camera where the photographer sees exactly the same image that is exposed to the film and can adjust everything by turning dials and clicking buttons. Since it doesn't need any electricity to take a picture, a manual SLR camera provides an excellent illustration of the fundamental processes of photography.
The optical component of the camera is the lens. At its simplest, a lens is just a curved piece of glass or plastic. Its job is to take the beams of light bouncing off of an object and redirect them so they come together to form a real image -- an image that looks just like the scene in front of the lens.

But how can a piece of glass do this? The process is actually very simple. As light travels from one medium to another, it changes speed. Light travels more quickly through air than it does through glass, so a lens slows it down.

When light waves enter a piece of glass at an angle, one part of the wave will reach the glass before another and so will start slowing down first. This is something like pushing a shopping cart from pavement to grass, at an angle. The right wheel hits the grass first and so slows down while the left wheel is still on the pavement. Because the left wheel is briefly moving more quickly than the right wheel, the shopping cart turns to the right as it moves onto the grass.

diagram of shopping cart, which illustrates bending light

The effect on light is the same -- as it enters the glass at an angle, it bends in one direction. It bends again when it exits the glass because parts of the light wave enter the air and speed up before other parts of the wave. In a standard converging, or convex lens, one or both sides of the glass curves out. This means rays of light passing through will bend toward the center of the lens on entry. In a double convex lens, such as a magnifying glass, the light will bend when it exits as well as when it enters.

lens diagram

This effectively reverses the path of light from an object. A light source -- say a candle -- emits light in all directions. The rays of light all start at the same point -- the candle's flame -- and then are constantly diverging. A converging lens takes those rays and redirects them so they are all converging back to one point. At the point where the rays converge, you get a real image of the candle. In the next couple of sections, we'll look at some of the variables that determine how this real image is formed.

Can you only answer if you know a lot about electronics, specifically camcorders?
Q. I need to know good things to look for in a camcorder. If you have any suggestions for a specific camcorder, I would like one with an SD card if possible.

A. Good things to look for in a camcorder:
1) MiniDV tape. The only memory card would be one used for storing still pictures.
2) Big glass for good big lenses.
3) Big CMOS or CCD imaging chips.
4) audio-in jack (XLR preferred; 1/8" or 3.5mm is acceptable).
5) manual audio control.
6) manual zoom.
7) manual focus.
8) manual shutter speed.
9) manual iris/exposure.
10) Viewfinder and LCD panel.
11) threads for adding lenses (tele or wide-angle)

Q. I need a digital camcorder that I can use with the Adobe Master Suite. Also, I need it to be under $500 if possible. Please include any other tips you can think of, including key accessories. I don't wanna buy a product I can't use!

What is the best budget camcorder to live stream high school athletic events?
Q. I need a high quality camcorder no more than $300. We will be using it to stream high school sports live, which brings me to my supplement question. Supposedly, I know someone who knows how to set up this live streaming. But how would this be set up exactly? You would obviously need an internet connection (wifi or ethernet), but I'm not sure we have access to this.... Is it possible to use satellite streaming? Or is that impossible without internet and would it be very expensive? Thanks!

A. If "know someone who knows how to set up this live streaming" then start with them on which camcorders to investigate.

"Satellite streaming" means there is a satellite uplink (including a big dish and transmitters and such) and someone's paid for transponder space and time. It also presumes a "satellite downlinks" and access to processing the feed. I won't assume anything, but I don't *think* this will be available to you.

At $300 you are basically at the entry level for consumer grade camcorders. While these are typically well made electronics, I cannot characterize them as being "high quality" relative to video broadcast standards. Since there are no consumer camcorders that can digitally stream the video over USB until you hit the $800 range (like a Canon HV40, or any others using miniDV tape media storage will work because they use firewire), the best you can do is stream analog video.

So, given your budget - which is likely not enough - we have:

Any camcorder with AV-out. This is pretty much any camcorder - but you need to be sure the AV-out can be used to monitor what the camera can see - again, pretty much any camcorder. This plugs into an "Analog/Digital converter". The A/D converter plugs into the computer. Then the "someone who knows how to set up this live streaming" can finish up... including the connection to the Local Area Network that connects to the internet...

Use a tripod or other steadying device. Consider using a camera that uses a wired remote. The control is mounted to the tripod handle and controls zoom and other things. Use the AC adapter and be sure the camcorder's "auto sleep" is disabled. You are using a camcorder in a manner for which it was not designed.

Some Sony and Canon camcorders have a combo AV/remote port. You can do one or the other - not both at the same time. Some camcorders use a LANC. This will work great. As far as I know, the least expensive with a separate LANC is the Canon HV40... then comes the Sony HDR-FX7 (I think). These are both more than you want to spend.

Consumer level HD camcorders have 4 problems. 3) These Consumer level HD camcorders all have a habit of the transferred to computer files are something you need to convert, thus losing your HD quality, to work with your editing software. 4) Mandatory maximum record times - 1 hour, 30 minutes, 8 minutes, 3 minutes – four different times advertised as maximum record time for some consumer level HD camcorders. No event I have ever been to is that short. Either take multiple camcorders or pack up with out getting the end of the event on video.

Would a DSLR make a good camcorder as well?

Q. Well, I am debating on whether to get a camera like a Canon 7d, or Canon 60d (When it's released) or get a camcorder in the same price range. I enjoy taking pictures as well, so I'm leaning towards a DSLR, but I would be taking more video then pictures.

So Camcorder or DSLR Camera?

A. the canon makes a great HD picture. each has its better qualities. get what you'll use more. if you shoot more pic, go with DSLR, otherwise get an HD camcorder.

Best camera to buy for Extreme sports recording?
Q. I currently record video on a Bridge camera but am looking to move up to a better camera as the video quality can be grainy, I record extreme sports so the camera needs to have high resolution, be able to attach fisheye lenses, i am looking along the lines of handycams (i.e. camcorders) and Dslr cameras, but am stuck with no idea of what to get. Preferably it should have hot shoe mounts built in, be light etc, and if it is a Dslr, it should obviously have video function, thanks in advance!

A. Go Pro 3 would be the best for extreme sports because it can go underwater and has an unbreakable case. Records in amazing quality and is only 200 dollars.

What should I ask when buying a video cam?

Q. I want to buy a video cam but what questions should I ask? What kind of things should I like for in a good camera?

A. Before you ask which camcorder you want, you need to ask yourself what you want to do with it. Are you planning on making short films, videoing your kids playing sports, capturing the holiday of a lifetime, carrying it in your pocket in case something interesting happens? Once you've got that sorted out you can decide in general terms what sort of camcorder you need and then you can start asking the detailed questions.

Confused on which camcorder to buy?
Q. I've been researching the different camcorders and I am getting overwhelmed. I thought I would like to get a DVD one for the convenience of already being on a disc. I heard that the picture quality is not great and the editing is a nightmare for some. I am nervous about mini tape ones aren't those going to be obsolete one day? All I want from my camcorder is to record my kids, sport events, birthdays and vacation, good quality picture some editing nothing professional either on my PC or the camera its self....

A. Good question!

as the owner of a myriad of camcorders, i can thoroughly recommend mini DV. Don't think the technology is 'old' quite the opposite, mini DV is the most reliable form of digital data storage, much more reliable than DVD or hardisk. in fact, NASA use them for digital storage.

The DVD ones are ok if all you want to do it record, then chuck it straight into the DVD player, but if you want to edit (which is a lot of fun, and easy to do) go with mini-DV.

the new harddisk camera's that are out are great in theory, but typically the data is compressed into a format that is difficult to use if you do want to edit it, plus, the are still suceptiple to 'crashing' just like a computer.

many top end camera's use Mini-DV tapes, don't get confused by their tape form, it's digital storage, and as long as you keep them away from extreme heat/cold (that is, DON'T leave them in your car for three months) you can't go wrong. I've recorded thousands of hours to mini-DV and they havn't failed me once.

in camera editing can be tricky, just a warning. there are a lot of great programs out there for editing, even something as basic as windows movie maker is a good place to start. just google video editing software and you'll be set!

What is the best camcorder to record a basic training graduation?

Q. My mom wants to purchase a new camcorder to use at my basic training graduation for the Air Force. I am ashamed to admit, I dont know a thing about camcorders. I did some researched and talked to a few people who recently purchased a camcorder and I'm still very fuzzy. Does anyone have any suggestions? Specific brand and model? Maybe, a general rule of thumb or ruleS of thumb for purchasing a GOOD quality camcorder.

A. Read alot before you get to the store; and for a camcorder do not buy the Extended warranty no matter how good the salesman is.

Really check out Sony and Hitachi on line. they were the best when I got mine 3 years ago
