Would losing the coating on a camcorder lens show much affect?

Q. I'm not sure if I destroyed the coating on the lens by wiping the wrong solution on it, but how would I know if the coating is long gone? And how thin is it?

A. The coating is pretty tough but if you have damaged it then the quality is going to suffer.

How do I transfer video from my Panasonic Digital Video Camcorder PV-GS32 to my computer?

Q. My computer (Mac Book Pro) does not recognize my Panasonic Digital Video Camcorder PV-GS32. I need to transfer the video from the mini tape to my computer. I have tried restarting, plugging the firewire in and out and shutting the camera on and off. How do I get it to recognize it, and then onto my computer to edit? Thank you!

A. Sounds to me like you are not using firewire - but USB. USB won't work. Since we can't see what you are doing, it is impossible to know for sure. You need a 4-pin to 9-pin firewire cable.

But... if you are indeed using firewire, then you need to be sure the firewire port is active (check System Preferences: Network). Another place to check is be sure the camcorder is on "Play" mode... Launch iMovie and Capture the video...

What's the best way to transfer video from a canon AVCHD canon HF m31 flash memory camcorder?
Q. I am not an amateur at this i've been editing for years. I recorded a musical for my sister that is two parts, the first half and the second. I can see on the camcorder that it is only two scenes which is correct. However, when I transfer my video using Windows, it automatically splits it into multiple scenes, each that are around 1.9gb in size. When i piece these together in Adobe Premiere Pro, there are about 3 dropped frames at the start of each of these created "scenes." I know that it must be the transfer that messes this up because when i plug my camcorder into my TV, everything plays perfect no problem. I don't have the included software that came bundled with the camcorder and there is no way to get it because apparently it doesn't exist anymore. You can only download an "updater" from the website in which you need to have the software already installed which I don't because i had to have windows re installed a while back. Is there any other free software that won't split up these two clips into multiple or anything I can do? It's a flash memory camcorder, so you can't "capture" the video with any software. My computer can handle it no problem. i7 processor and 8 gb of RAM. Please HELP!!!!
It's a flash memory camcorder so you can't use the capture feature with premiere. It says you are supposed to just transfer the files to your hard drive but I have done this and i get the dropped frame issue. These "1.9gb size scenes) it makes, each one starts off with a frozen frame for about 2 or 3 frames then continues just fine. I don't know what else to do. I know the video files are okay because I can plug my camcorder into the TV and view all the videos no problem. Everytime I try transferring the footage over the same thing happens.

A. There are two ways to edit AVCHD video.

You found the first method. Copy the MTS files from the camcorder to the computer and "piece them together". Your observation of the 2 gig file size limitation is known and is basically required by certain operating systems which cannot deal with large file sizes. Many times, this method requires transcoding (converting) the copied MTS files into a more useful file type and uncompressed format for the editor to deal with.

The other method generally means connecting the camcorder to the computer with a USB cable, putting the camcorder into "Play" or Computer mode and doing exactly what you say you can't do - but this does assume that the video editor is AVCHD-file capable. During that "import" (capture) process, the camcorder's electronics are used to decompress the video file data stream and the video editor can pull the video into whatever video type it likes to deal with. Sony Vegas and Apple iMovie and Final Cut can do this - I was pretty sure Premiere could too - though not know which version you are using makes it challenging. When the video is imported/captured this way into the computer, the "seamless" video you want should happen.

The problem you are encountering with the method you are using probably has to do with the way AVCHD video compression happens.
Frame 1 = base
Frame 2 = what changed from frame 1
Frame 3 = what changed from frame 2
Frame 4 = what changed from frame 3
Frame 5 = what changed from frame 4
Frame 6 = what changed from frame 5
Frame 7 = what changed from frame 6
Frame 8 = what changed from frame 7
Frame 9 = base
Frame 10 = what changed from frame 9
Frame 11 = what changed from frame 10
Frame 12 = what changed from frame 11
Frame 13 = what changed from frame 12
Frame 14 = what changed from frame 13
Frame 15 = what changed from frame 14
Frame 16 = what changed from frame 15
Frame 17 = what changed from frame 16
Frame 18 = base... and so on...

If the file size limitation happens at frame 4, then frames 5, 6, 7 get confused. If the second method (importing/capturing) is used, then the camera's file system working with the editor are able to piece the video back together as a contiguous file and the "dropped frame" issue should go away.

If you continue to use option1, then be sure to use the highest quality capture setting in the HF M31. This way, there is less compression of the captured video so more of the frame is available following the base frame. Because of the reduced compression, there will be more of the segmented files.

Problem with Android Camcorder please help?

Q. I have a question. Why is it when i want to record a video using the built-in camcorder app it only records up to 37:48?

A. because that is the size of your internal memory. 37 minutes of video will chew through several GB of memory space.

How do you download videos that are on a JVC camcorder tape to your computer?
Q. I connected the camcorder to my Hp but it doesn't give me any options to download the tape to the computer. I already downloaded the CD that came with the camcorder "digital photo navigator 1.5" but again it doesn't give me any option.

A. i just guessed that your JVC vcam is a miniDV type, if so...
a miniDV vcam must be DV~Firewire400**-connected to pc to upload video thru video capture or video editing* application while vcam is ON PLAYBACK. Before cable purchase** check PC for DV port {VCAM@4pin=>firewireCABLE=>PC@4/ 6pin?}. If none, install firewire card: pci for desktop or pcmcia / express for laptop.

Good reasonable priced camcorder for recording music videos?

Q. OK long story short; talented kids, plenty of music, ready to make a good music video. What good reasonably priced camcorder do you reccomend? Any link to where I could buy it would also be appreciated.

A. I am not sure what is reasonably priced to you but I am going to recommend a Canon Vixia HF M400. It creates wonderful video and it has multiple capture options. You also have the ability to manually control most of the features which will allow you to get high quality shots based on you own specific needs. Check it out here:

http://www.amazon.com/Canon-VIXIA-M400-Camcorder-Slots/dp/B004HW7E4M/ref=sr_1_2?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1312585569&sr=1-2

How much sound quality is lost with camcorder formats that result in greater compression?
Q. I want to buy a camcorder to record myself playing music and am deciding on format. I understand that videos made with HDD and flash memory camcorders will have greater compression--how much will this affect the sound?

A. the audio on miniDV is uncompressed 48k, 16 bit sampled digital sound. If you get a camcorder that allows exernal mics you can achieve truly professional results. Typical DVD audio compression is 7:1 MPEG3 which is reasonably good. I believe HDD and flash is higher compression, but i don't have a number for you.

Is there any way to tell when existing Camcorder prices will go down?

Q. Panasonic releases a lot of their 2011 line of camcorders in March, will this make the price of their existing models go down? Is there any way to tell when existing Camcorder prices will go down (for any models).

A. right. top of line cameras always sell at a premium price. once a better model is available, that premium drops to a more commonplace price. however retailers do not drop prices until they have the new wonder model in stock, to do otherwise would reduce sales volume. some announced products never make it to the store (vaporware) or produced in such small quantity as to not change retail pricing structure. not all retailers drop prices, they may have a distribution deal with the manufacture to return older models from inventory. so bargain models are never on the shelf for you to buy. they become "factory refurbished" items for eventual sale as obsolete models.

How good is the video quality on modern HD camcorders?
Q. I am hoping to get a general idea on how good a HD camcorder (price within 800$) would look on a 52" 1080p TV? Would it look flawless to the normal eye? How does it compare to blu-ray movies out today? Is it like watching DVD quality? Any information will be helpful. (I am thinking of getting the HF R10 Canon camcorder it will record in 1080p)
Thanks

A. flawless is not likely. all consumer HD camcorders have difficulty with action and moving camera shots. this is due to high compression. most any camera will take a great picture of a still subject in bright daylight.

the HR R10 records on flashcards, so its maximum datarate is substantially less than Blu-ray. at the highest setting, it is only 17 mbps. Blu-ray is 24-30 mbps, which can be reached by HDD class cameras. it is better than DVD but then DVD does not pretend to be an HD format.

What video format does this camcorder record in?

Q. What video format does the Polaroid DVC-00725F HD camcorder record in? I'm thinking of getting one, but first I need to know what format it records in.

A. Looks like it captures directly to AVI format - one of the reviewers at Amazon listed that.

More reviews at CNET:

Looking for a HD camcorder that captures good pictures from the video. Any suggestions?
Q. Budget is about 400-600 but willing to pay more if it has features that are a must and really improve the quality of the videos and the camcorder. (ie. advanced image stabilizer etc.)
Compact and good battery life is important
Uses memory card
easy to transfer video to computer where it could be burned to dvd.

A. High end DSLR cameras can record 1080p video as independent 2 megapixel frames. That's by far the best quality for photo extraction as conventional HD recording mostly just saves the differences from the past frame. That's fine for video watching, but leads to poorer still extracts.

Look for cameras that have a large image sensor. Pretty much everything has image stabilization, but that's not a magic wand. It won't compensate for jerky holding, or a handheld zoom beyond 5x or so.

Speaking of zoom, ignore anything that says "digital zoom" Optical zoom is useful, digital trades quality for zoom. Zooming beyond 5x really needs a tripod for steady camera images.

The easiest way to transfer files to a computer is simply move the memory card to the computer's reader. Don't bother cabling the camcorder and computer together.

This Canon would be ideal, but it's $800 http://reviews.cnet.com/digital-camcorders/canon-vixia-hf-s20/4505-6500_7-33949016.html?tag=rnav

What should I give to pawn shops for money?

Q. I need at least $200 asap. I have old gaming systems like old school nintendo, super nintendo, N64 & gamecube. I have a digital camera, dvds, a cd payer that can be karaoke with microphoness, camcorder, tv, and some games like scene it and trivial pursuit with dvd's included. What can I get fo that? What else would be a good idea to bring?

A. I manage the Ebay account in a Pawn shop, As I write this I am eating lunch in the "Dungeon" lol a windowless room that we do Ebay in.
For the old systems I would offer 5.00 each and might do 10.00 for the gamecube depending on condition of them.
Digital cameras..Tough to sell because they keep increasing the MP rates (Megapixels) you buy one and a month later it is obsolete..8mp or better we do $20.00 again depending on condition.
DVDs are $1.00 each, Kareoke Machine I wouldn't touch they don't sell here, maybe different where you live.
Camcorder depending on what type of recording it does could be anywhere from "No thanks" to $40.00.
TV's...if it is an Old Style TV Bigger than 20" it would be $10.00, No board games no pawn shop will touch them unless they are antiques from the 60's or earlier.
Bring Gold or Silver those are always a sure bet...Pandora beads and bracelets are good too

EDIT:25% of value?!....We would have no customers EVER..we pay 40-60% of resale.

How much money could i get out of my Poloroid Pink Digital Camera?
Q. I was going to take it to a pawn shop b/c i really need the money. Its in excellent condition and it comes with all its usb cords and the cords that you need to plug it into the computer. It has a camcorder on it too. I bought this camera for $150. I just wanted to know how much i could get out of it from a pawn shop. Any ideas? I would really appreciate it.

A. Pawn shops are the worst places to sell something. You will get a tiny fraction of what anything is worth. It's not a selling service. It's a way to have them hold something of value while you take out a loan with them. Then you pay to get it back later.

Try Craigslist instead.

Where can you finance a professional camcorder?

Q. I am in the market to upgrade to a high-end camcorder (specifically the Canon XH-A1), but can't afford it's $3500 price tag at the moment. I could, however, easily pay for that over 12 or 15 months. Are there any shops which offer high end camcorders but provide no interest financing?

What should I look for in a camcorder for filmmaking?
Q. I'm kinda knew to this, I'm a student filmmaker and am look to buy my first camcorder. My budget isn't too high, under 1,000. I can definately pay 500 but anything higher than 750 is probably pushing it. I just want to know what are somethings i should look for in buying a camcorder. Also, I will be editing these on a PC using Windows Movie Maker.

A. Mic jack. Manual audio control.

Canon HV40 (if your computer has a firewire port) or HF S100 (if your computer has no firewireport).

And get Sony Vegas. It can deal with either the HDV or MTS files from the above camcorders. MovieMaker cannot.

You will also want a tripod (don't go cheap - you never want to shoot handheld). The Sunpak 7500TM is an OK consumer-grade tripod.

Invest in an optional high capacity battery or two from the camcorder manufacturer. And a case (Pelican 1500) and maybe a video light (Dot Line DV-60) and camera bracket (Bescor VB-50) and a shotgun mic (NRG Research SA-568).

What's the best handheld digital camcorder to shoot a short, small-time movie with?

Q. *preferably UNDER $1000* I really want to get into film production and I figured I would test the water - you have to start somewhere, right? I'm looking mostly for 1) high picture quality and 2) ability to execute simple cinematic effects like focusing in and out on an object. I may show it to the admissions directors at UCLA as part of my "portfiolio" when applying to the film school next year, so I really would like it to look professional as possible.
(and don't be like all those morons who say "LOL WELL MAYBE YOU SHOULD LEARN HOW TO SPELL PORTFOLIO BEFORE YOU START MAKING ONE IM 45 YEARS OLD WITH NO JOB AND I SPEND MY TIME ON YAHOO ANSWERS CRITICIZING 17 YEAR OLD KIDS OVER TYPOS!! :):):):)" cause obviously, it was a typo...)

A. if you want the best under $1000, look for a 3ccd camcorder.

if you really want to get that "film look", you'll have to pay more money. you'll need something that will shoot in 24p. a new panasonic dvx will cost you about $3500, but you can find cheaper ones on ebay.

Looking to start producing short films, what kind of camera would you recommend?
Q. I want to produce short films and am looking for an HD camera that will give me decent quality, priced under $1000? Also, I was wondering if there was a model out there where I could attach a mic to get better sound quality? Thanks!

A. Getting a HD camcorder is taking a step backward in Video Quality. Hd camcorder Interpolate the video, which means every 4th or 5th frame of a video is of what is being video-graphed, the other frames are filled in by the camcorder, thus giving you not true video. MiniDV tape camcorders give every frame of every shot and usually cost less.

http://simplevideoediting.com/learn/part1_camcorder_choices.htm

http://simplevideoediting.com/learn/part2_connect_camcorder.htm

Consumer level HD camcorders have 4 problems. 1) Blurry, fuzzy, out of focus areas closely around people in videos taken by consumer level HD camcorders. 2) Any movement, even a wave or lifting an arm, while in front of a recording consumer level HD camcorder, results in screen ghosts and artifacts being left on the video track, following the movement. Makes for bad video, sports videos are unwatchable. 3) These Consumer level HD camcorders all have a habit of the transferred to computer files are something you need to convert, thus losing your HD quality, to work with your editing software. 4) Mandatory maximum record times - 1 hour, 30 minutes, 8 minutes, 3 minutes – four different times advertised as maximum record time for some consumer level HD camcorders. No event I have ever been to is that short. Either take multiple camcorders or pack up with out getting the end of the event on video.

MiniDV is currently the most popular format for consumer digital camcorders. MiniDV camcorders are typically more affordable than their HDD and DVD counterparts. Each MiniDV tape will typically hold an hour of footage at normal recording speed and quality. MiniDV tapes are available for purchase at not only electronic and camera stores, but also at drugs stores and grocery stores, making them easy to find while your on vacation. There are literally hundreds of MiniDV camcorders available; both in standard and high-definition.

A. Flip Ultra Camcorder 2nd Generation, 120 Minutes (Black)
http://www.amazon.com/dp/B0023B14U4?tag=dcmb-20

Review:I bought family members first generation Flips some time ago, and they were so impressed by their simplicity and convenience that I had to get one for myself. I justified it by explaining to my wife that it would make Amazon reviews so much easier (I haven't once used it in that way), but really I saw it as a new toy. Sometimes less is more, and that certainly seems to hold true in the camcorder world -- at least as far as the Flip is concerned. While there are certainly bigger, better, and far more professional solutions about, the real value to the Flip is that it can go with you anywhere, and you can forget all about it until a shooting situation comes up. We've used ours to record press conferences, and post the same online for others to see. We've created our own virtual tours of homes we were interested in. We sent it to Princeton for my grandfather's 65th reunion, so I could at least enjoy the festivities from a distance. We've used it far more often than we ever imagined we really would, and it's proven to be as much a real tool as a novelty. That you can hand it to someone who has never seen it before, and instruction can be limited to "on/off here, start/stop recording there," means that it's near universally accessible, and fun even for those who might otherwise be somewhat technologically averse.

I grabbed the 2d gen Ultra because I wanted the additional storage space. What I didn't expect was to enjoy a larger view screen, a better (by my eye) on/off toggle (a simple push button, rather than a slide), higher quality audio, and a number of functional enhancements on the software side, such as mass delete with confirm.

Curiously, I no longer seem to be able to just pull the .avi files from the Flip into the Movie Maker software that comes bundled with Windows Vista, but I'm not prepared to actually complain about that fact, as it may be as easy as saving them in another format before pulling them in. If someone else has a meaningful solution here, I'd love to hear it.

That aside, I'd be hard pressed to come up with a single complaint about this generation of the Flip. Unlike hauling around a 'real' camera or camcorder, you can toss this one in your pocket and forget all about it until you need or want it. You can teach others to use it in under 30 seconds. Uploading to services like Youtube is easy even for those who have never done it before, with or without the software bundled in the camera itself. I couldn't be happier that I took the leap from the basic first generation to the Ultra 2nd.

What camcorder would be suitable for producing wedding videos?
Q. I have looked around and don't believe i need a 'pro' level camera, i do plan to start a Business filming wedding videos, as long as the camcorder is hd and not a cheap rip off how good would the picture quality be?

Names of cameras please guys?
Thanks
Video student - I have worked within massive company's im not what you would call an amateur, just wanted other peoples opinions on the matter.

A. The very least I'd even think about going with is something with a relatively good lens, good manual controls, and controllable audio inputs. I've thought about using, for example, something like a Canon HV40 as a second or backup camera on paid gigs, but that's as low as I'd even consider going. Even then, I take my HV30 along as a "use in an emergency only!" backup on paid shoots I use my DVX100B on.

A consumer camera will leave you shorthanded in many ways - it will auto-focus at times when you do not want to change focus. It will leave you scrambling to find light, anywhere, to avoid grainy video. It will leave you trying to figure out what to do about audio - you WILL need some form of external mixing or recording if you go this route - there just aren't enough audio options on consumer cameras. Make sure your clients know EXACTLY what they will be getting from you, and make sure that they're comfortable with that.

If you're shooting HD, factor in the costs of the Blu-Ray burner and discs, as that's how you're delivering video to clients, right? If you're not mastering in HD, you might as well go with a really good standard-definition camera like the DVX100B, or even a GL2 if you're really budget-strapped, and output to DVD. You can get a solid entry-level pro standard definition camera for a MUCH better price than any solid entry-level pro HD camera that doesn't compress the heck out of the video - and therefore, your video quality will actually improve! I'll take DV from a DVX100B over "HD" from any handheld consumer camera any day, with VERY few exceptions.

On a wedding, I NEED control over my image - this means iris, white balance, and especially manual focus. I NEED a relatively large lens for decent low-light performance. I NEED good audio (absolutely critical!) - this means direct pickup from the couple at the ceremony, whether a wireless microphone or some other direct feed. Any combination of equipment that doesn't meet those needs is useless to me, and more importantly, it's useless to the celebrating couple. You'll find that just about every camera that is lower than the entry-level pro threshold will fall into this category.

To make some money, you have to spend some. If all else fails, consider renting or borrowing pro equipment. Or, buy demo or refurbished pro equipment - my demo DVX100B has been a workhorse of an entry-level pro camera through my entry into the world of video. Big retailers like B&H do this, as well as lesser known ones like Omega Broadcast in Austin, TX.

Explore all your options, and resist the urge to cut corners in places where your quality will suffer. With all due respect, sacrificing quality is an amateur move, and not one to be taken lightly - it's certainly not one that people who pay you will take lightly. Do not settle for a camera that will cripple the skills you have acquired in preparing to go out on your own.

What Type Of Camcorder Should I Get?

Q. I want a CAMCORDER for Music Video, and Sketch comedy purposes!
I want an HD camcorder
i need help because i don't want to screw up like last year i bought a crappy camcorder
My budget is $0-$150

A. To be honest, I spent 1000$ for mine, and I am still not happy with it. You need to save a bit more money, and then get a DSLR for Music Video. Normal camcorder won't do the job. Unless you are really good at postproduction, then you might get away with a HD flipcam.

How do I zoom in or out while recording with a DSC w530 Sony Cyber shot camera?
Q. When i take pictures i can zoom in or out perfectly fine with my DSC w530 Sony Cyber shot camera. But when I record, i can't zoom in or out. It's like, i can only choose how close or far i want to see while recording and it'll stay like that forever until i finish recording! And that sucks! Please help me! I think something is wrong with my camera? :(

A. This is working the way it was manufactured. Optical zoom works by moving the lenses with a little motor. The camera's mic is right next to the lens motor. If you were able to zoom while capturing the video, the mics would pick up the motor noise.

A DSC - digital still camera - was designed to take good stills. Video is a "convenience feature". If you need good video (and zoom capability without the noise), then you need to use a camcorder (or dSLR that can also capture video as a convenience feature).

There is nothing "wrong" with your camera. You are expecting it to do something it was not designed to do.

What's a good cheap camera for independent filmmaking?

Q. I've been making short films with my old JVC mini dv camcorder for awhile, but I would like to start entering contests. The visual and audio quality is just terrible and I'd be embarrassed to enter anything made with that camera.

So my question is... what is a good, relatively cheap, camera with good visual quality?

and as a bonus question: Are there any programs similar to Final Cut Pro that are cheaper?

A. perhaps a cannon hv20?

Has a similar 24p setting, it is HDV based.

Is the Black Magic Cinema Camera good for independent filmmaking?
Q. I'm considering the black magic cinema camera as my choice to shoot my low budget horror movie. But i need to find out from some professionals in here if it is good in low light environments and if it can capture the speed and movement of a car chase and a fight scene. Also, are 35 mm lenses the way to go when shooting with a high end camcorder? ...thanks in advance.
My film budget for my movie is $15,000 dollars. I'm wondering if adding a 35mm lenses to the black magic cinema camera is the answer to getting both that "film look" and shooting in low light environments. I saw somewhere about a possible issue with blurring...I assume that means something that occurs trying to capture fast scenes like chases or fights. I'm open to suggestions.

A. What's your budget? You need a lot more than the black magic camera body to shoot a film. Depending on your budget there are many options for shooting. If you are going with a DSLR, I think Nikon has the best low light capabilities.

What is the best camcorder under 600 dollars?

Q. Is it Panasonic PV-GS 180? If it is, i am going to get one.

A. If Panasonic is your choice, and if u have a budget tht much, get a GS300 instead, its only a step down frm their flagship consumer miniDV cam, the GS500 (but many prosumers still give the older model GS400 a higher mark).
Pana's range of miniDV camcorders r good. They offer 3 CCDs instead of 1, resulting more vivid and trueer color reproductions.
Also, if video quality and ease of editing r your main priorities, get a miniDV cam. The format is still superior compared to DVD/Hardisk-based formats on newer cams. Thats why pro video guys r still using tape-based camcorders. Tapes r also cheap n can be reused many times (but keep it max 5 times) and stick to 1 brand of tape only.
go to the link below to read about it, and also to read many other reviews..

ANSWERS, what is the best camcorder for snowboarding, READ BELOW?
Q. I want to get an HD camcorder for under $600 or a consumer non HD camcorder for under $400, I want to get a camcorder that has awesome clarity to shoot sponsor videos, and is a Flash Memory or MiniDV better for snowboarding and to make DVDs. Thanks

A. after working in the film industry for almost 3 years and shooting snowboard/ski videos for local mountains like echo mountain, and copper mountain, here is what i have to say.

HD is not a easy rout to go. HD is a very unforgiving environment. First off, you need an HD camcorder. Those run about 1000 dollars averagely. You would also need a video editing program that supports editing in HD. Sony vegas is a common program but that runs you 500 bucks. You also need a ton of ram and a good graphics card that can process the HD video while editing. In the end you need an HD dvd burner that can burn your HD footage. If you fall short of one of these things the video in the end will not come out in true HD but will be brought down to normal SD quality. If you have the money and tools to shoot, edit, and play in HD then go for it!

I would go for miniDV any day. flash memory can only store a little data and the quality is not as supurb as mini dv

In my opinion i shot my first snowboard video on a panasonic pvgs 320. Its a great camcorder that has 3ccd's and has the best picture for a camera under 400 dollars. I currently own it and love it. If you don't want that camcorder then get something that is 3ccd. It will be making the people that watch it go WOW! 3ccd gives you supurb color and I highly reccomend it.

check out my youtube listed below. I have my first snowboard video on there and the quality may seem bitter (because its on youtube) but trust me the quality is the best for the price you pay.

also please check out my tutorial on my youtube below that shows you how to build a steadicam. that will let you ride behing your buddies and get spectacular footage thats SUPER STABLE. also invest in a wide angle for close up shots near the jumps and rails.

What is the best 8mm camcorder that I should buy?

Q. I am looking for an 8mm camcorder as I have a really hard time finding them. I have looked in many shops for an 8mm camcorder, but it seems like no one has an 8mm camcorder.

I believe the net is the best place for me to be looking for an 8mm camcorder and I know that a lot of people in here are experts in finding this kind of stuff.

So where can I find an 8mm camcorder that is just awesome and which one would you recommend?

Thanks

A. I would go for the Sony CCD-TR818 (check link below). My friend who is a camcorder lover always talks about this one, and I believe he also has it.

From the reviews I have read about it, it is supposed to be great. Great quality, very easy to use and simply everything you need in an 8mm camcorder. Good Luck!!

How do I transfer video and sound from an analog 8mm camcorder?

What is the best HD camcorder to buy?
Q. I am looking to get a new HD camcorder for 1000-1500 dollars. What is the best one within that price range.

A. I just bought the Canon HF11 and so far I've been pleased. It's a flash memory type. Canon has hard drive models too.

Some users like the models that record onto disks or tapes.

What is the best camera for recording videos?

Q. A video camera that's under $200, can pause videos without stopping the whole video, and has a good grip. Must also have VERY good quality hd.

A. Hi Mike:

For your $200 budget, you are not going to have "very good quality HD", when you consider that pro video cameramen and TV stations spend $5000 to $10,000 (and more) for "good HD" equipment.

Unless you use a tape-based (miniDV cassette, for example) camcorder, there is no need for a "Pause" button, and most SD card storage models start a whole new video file when you start/stop the Record button.

Some SD card and HDD storage models have a "pre-record" function that actually saves several seconds of video from before you press Record. So, a "Pause" feature has no advantage.

Sony, Panasonic, JVC, and Canon all make affordable models that sell in your price range. (See a typical B+H Photo listing of models on sale here: http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/buy/Camcorders/Ns/p_PRICE_2%7c0/ci/1871/pn/2/N/4294548093 )

Sony currently has some price promotions that stretch your shopping dollar ($50-$150 off certain models) that are in effect this month. (See the B+H Photo page for examples.)

If you prefer the "pistol grip style" camcorders (like the Sanyo/Panasonic "Xacti"/HX-WA series), look at a Panasonic HX-WA3 model ($198). Panasonic bought Sanyo, and rebranded the Xacti pistol grip line into their HX-WA series.

For palm-size camcorders, you can always buy an accessory grip handle that threads onto the bottom of the camcorder via the tripod socket.

hope this helps,

Camcorder Speacialist: What low cost camcorder can video tape in dim light?
Q. Can you recommend a feature on a camcorder that can do this? Thank you.
Dennis C Thank you for you're very helpful answer.

A. Hi "September":

The term "low cost" is a relative term. Low cost to Donald Trump or Mark Cuban might be a few thousand dollars. Camcorders run anywhere from $50-$50,000 USD (and more!). If you give us a real dollar-budget, we can be more specific as to models.

But as to the basics of your Question, the cheaper the camcorder, the smaller the video sensor usually is. Smaller sensors (and smaller lenses) don't capture as much light (just like a smaller mouthed bucket in a rain storm captures less water). So, low-light capability is less.

And cheaper lenses aren't as good quality in passing light as more expensive ones (this is the F-stop aperture rating of the lens). Even at its widest aperture setting, a cheap lens won't let as much light get through to the video chip.

When you're shopping for a low-light/dim-light feature, Sony and other makers use terms like "Night Shot", or "Low Lux" in their feature list. Enhanced features like "Super Night Shot" work in almost total darkness. But even with these features, low-light video can look grainy or "noisy" without special chip-cooling features to eliminate random electronic circuit & thermal noise.

My Canon camcorders compensate for low-light with a setting that uses a lower frame-rate (letting more light photons fall on the video sensor for each frame), but this results in a stuttery, somewhat blurry image when objects are moving.

Good video is a "get what you pay for" proposition.

Dim light, in video terms, is usually in the under-10-Lux range. (Kitchen fluorescent lighting is 300-500 Lux; a cozy living room is around 50 Lux.) But before shopping for a 1-Lux or "<1 Lux" rated camcorder, read this informative Videomaker Magazine article on low-light cameras: http://www.videomaker.com/article/9466

hope this helps,

How can i get great audio for my videos?

Q. My camcorder has no audio input jack, and i would really like to use an external mic to get great audio for my movies. How can i do this?

A. you could do it the old-fashioned way and just have two separate devices, one for video and one for audio. other than that i cant really think of anything

What camcorders have great audio but qre of a low price?
Q. Hey, I've been looking for a good camcorder to make YouTube videos. I want to sing, play guitar, piano, all of that. But the cameras that I've been told to try out usually have this scratchy and muffled sound added to my voice. And other cameras are just not in my price range (I'd pay no more than $200 for a camera).
I'm no expert on cameras so please, please help! Thanks.

A. HD Camcorders and DSLR Cameras interpolate the video, which means of every 25 frames of video, 4 or 5 frames are taken by the lens assembly; the other frames in between these are filled in by the camcorder inner circuitry, thus giving you not true video. It looks like this -one frame from the lens assembly, 7or 8 from the electronic circuitry, one frame from the lens assembly, 7or 8 from the electronic circuitry, one frame from the lens assembly, 7or 8 from the electronic circuitry, one frame from the lens assembly, 7or 8 from the electronic circuitry, from front to back of the video. Near impossible to edit, even when you have the Multi port processor computer with the big 1GB Graphics card and a Sound card that is required to edit, view, watch and work with the files these camcorders produce.

Consumer Level HD Camcorders and DSLR Cameras have 4 problems. 1) Blurry, fuzzy, out of focus areas closely around people in videos taken by consumer level HD camcorders. 2) Any movement, even a wave or lifting an arm, while in front of a recording Consumer Level HD Camcorder and DSLR Cameras, results in screen ghosts and artifacts being left on the video track, following the movement. Makes for bad video, sports videos are unwatchable. 3) These Consumer Level HD Camcorders and DSLR Cameras all have a habit of the transferred to computer files are something you need to convert, thus losing your HD quality, to work with your editing software. 4) Mandatory maximum record times - 1 hour, 30 minutes, 8 minutes, 3 minutes – four different times advertised as maximum record time for some Consumer Level HD Camcorders and DSLR Cameras. No event I have ever been to is that short. Either take multiple camcorders and DSLR Cameras or pack up with out getting the end of the event on video.

And add the fact that to get a HD camcorder that could produce better video quality footage, one would have to spend in excess of $3500 for that camcorder that could produce higher quality video

What would be a good software and camcorder for someone getting into videography?

Q. Im taking my interest in movie editing further and plan to make a business out of it. i have played around with windows movie maker but need something more detailed. Im trying to figure out what type of software is really good for somebody in my situation who is just starting out. I have researched some and looked at reviews but would just like more opinions. I also would like opinions on digital camcorders if you have them. Thank you

A. Software is easy: Avid is what the big boys generally use. A close second and also used by professional editors is Adobe Premier as part of the larger Production premium pack, or the ultimate pack. If you are a student (HS or College) then Adobe is a great choice because of their huge 80% discount for students and teachers.

The camera depends on the type of work you are doing, intended audience, locations, etc.
Do not even bother with consumer HD cameras, learn about the different formats and you will see this is an evolutionary step backward in quality.

Ideally, you would get a HDV camera like the Canon XH A1S ($4000) at a start.

If you can not afford the XH, then right square between the consumer HD and Pro HDV is good-old standard def MiniDv Pro-sumer cameras like the Canon XL and GL series. The GL-2 is still available new for about $2500. Both are frequently on e-Bay with the XL going just under $1000 and the GL-1 and GL-2 going for $500 and $800 respectively.

When you get to where your time is valuable, you will also want a purpose built computer for editing. HDV is here and it does not require a huge upgrade form standard def, but plan on $2000 if you can build it yourself.

What is a good brand for a Camcorder?

Q. I am looking for professional kind of camcorder that is for consumers. I never bought a camcorder before, so I have to know what brand is good for a camcorder

I will be buying a camcorder that has
- 1080p 60fps recording
- 55mm focal length

A. My husband bought me a Sony for my birthday. It is easy to use. I do not know about any of the specifics you want to know about. But I like what I have.

How do i know what recording settings i want when using my Gopro HERO3 Black?
Q. In what situations is it best to use which settings? For example, when is it better to record in 1080p with 60fps, as oppose to using 1440p at 48fps? When is each setting better?
Please explain what situations are best for each setting. Helpful answers will be appreciated and acknowledged with a best answer.

A. Standard frames per second ("frame rate" or FPS) = 30 fps for NTSC; 25 fps PAL; 24 fps film-based movies.

Faster frame rate allows better slow motion playback - assuming the shutter is a decent speed and the lighting is good.

In the two examples you cite, 60 fps is a function of 30 fps or NTSC standard frame rate. If 60i, this is the same as 30p. For 48 fps, then a function of 24 fps "cinema" mode.

The higher frame rates will be better for slow motion stuff.

Please keep in mind the GoPro family are "action cameras" and not "general purpose" camcorders. They *can* capture "regular" video - but are designed for fast action video capture.

The settings you choose depend on what the plan is for the video when editing.

What type of camera should a beginner filmmaker use?

Q. Should a beginner filmmaker use a Film camera (super 8 or 16mm), Videotape, or digital?

A. It depends how serious you are... film can get expensive - between the film, processing, possibly digitizing for editing... adding audio (use a field recorder from Zoom, M-Audio, Edirol, Fostex, among others) and synching - but it is the closest to how many big screen films continue to be done today (but with cameras from PanaVision, Arri, VariCam, CineAlta, among others)...

Step 1: Set a budget.

"Video tape"? No too much analog tape around. If you are referring to miniDV, DVCPRO, SD/HD/XDCAM tape formats, all are as digital as hard disc drive (HDD) or flash memory - much lesss compress than HDD or flash, and continue to be professional's choice for a wide range of uses... and is the recommended path to start with. The "DV" in miniDV = Digital Video". Just because it is tape does not mean it is not digital.

If you are referring to consumer grade HDD or flash memory (or DVD) based camcorders - that would not be the recommended path. Too much compresion on the video stream results in discarded video information and results in reduced video quality.

Since miniDV tape is common, cheap and currently captures the least compressed video formats (DV/HDV) when compared to its HDD and flash memory siblings), I would suggest this would be the appropriate path. As your sophistcation grows, you could move to an external hard drive (like those from Focus Enhancements - in the FireStore series) or investigate camcordrs that use flash memory like the Panasonic AG-HVX200 or Sony HVR-Z7... (all of which continue to record to DV/HDV formats).

But... when you boil it down, it is all about content - and if the content is REALLY compelling, then what equipment was used or how that content was captured can be irrelevant.

What type of cameras do modern films use?
Q. I'm talking about films that were shot from the years 2000-2007. Super 8? 16 mm? Please give me ideas. Thanks.

A. You can check out Panavision - http://www.panavision.com/product_category.php?cat=1
They have 35mm, 16mm, and HD
They are very expensive and use film of course.

There are other camcorders like the Panasonic AJ-HDC27H for $45K - http://catalog2.panasonic.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ModelDetail?displayTab=O&storeId=11201&catalogId=13051&itemId=94208&catGroupId=14569&surfModel=AJ-HDC27H
(hopefully that link works - it is insanely long!)

Some are made with camcorders that cost a lot less like the Panasonic AG-HVX200 for $6K. This would be used for a lower budget movie, not a King Kong type movie. This also uses a MiniDV tape to record the media (or P2 Cards/memory cards), whereas the others use film.

A. go the SVP , they are hard wearing reliable camera's which have the strength and technology to give the best camera's a run for there money , I would suggest the T-100 or T-500 for design and quality , have two of them , I have a $5000 canon xm2 camera , and use the t-500 for productions , as they pretty much have the best quality minus the zoom function , although they have a 5x optical zoom which is small but handy . I have tow t-500's they are small , and able to be taken anywhere , and offer brilliant an epic colour and rendering capabilities , and most of all , under $150US including postage (you will need to grab the code from the top to get 30% off)
they are light and robust , and weigh around or less than 500gma and are high definition 1080p ,
for a one seater cessna , you put the cam in a suction phone holder so that you can operate it hands free , if your talking about r/c planes , you rig a bolt bettween the landing gear for dry use , or either uses , by sealing a case in epoxy resin and either placing strong magnets in the epoxy resin and placing on the fuselage

Are there any digital cameras and/or camcorders offering optical zoom in video mode?

Q. Hi, anybody knows if there are any digital cameras and/or camcorders offering optical zoom in video mode?

All I've ever had are camcorders and digital cameras that feature only digital zoom when recording video, and the quality of that zooming is lousy; you see the quality difference immediately, when playing back the videos.

If anybody knows, I'd appreciate some suggestions, preferably budget cameras, USB compatible, so I can transfer to my PC.

Thanks a lot in advance for your suggestions.

A. All "real" camcorders have optical zoom and digital zoom.

It sounds like you are using a very low-end flip-like or toy camcorder or a camera that is primarily used for taking stills (and happens to have a "video" feature).

MiniDV tape based camcorders provide the best available video quality - but they use firewire (not USB) to transfer video to your computer. USB is only used for transferring stills from the camcorder's memory card or webstreaming (of the camcorder has either of these features). Adding a firewire port is typically not difficult - and it is pretty cheap.
Canon ZR800, ZR950, Sony DCR-HC52, HC62 and Panasonic PV-GS320 are good, entry-level, examples.

Hard drive and flash based camcorders compress their video a lot, but the quality isn't too bad... Video is transferred using USB. Sony DCR-SR45 and Canon FS10 are examples. They typically cost more than miniDV, but that does not mean the video quality is better - compression of the video information translates into lost data and can result in reduced video quality.

In any case, when you shop for a camcorder, do not use digital zoom as a feature comparison item - because when you bring the camcorder home, your first step is to turn digital zoom off. Use only Optical zoom.

Other things to look for in a good camcorder:
Mic-in jack (optional, but very useful)
Some sort of audio manual control (again, optional, but if you think you might be recording loud audio, like bands, this will be a requirement).

DO NOT BUY A DVD BASED CAMCORDER. Their video is terrible - especially for editing or uploading to the web. The discs are a pain and can be unreliable (resulting in list video).

A. Of course there are, just not many. Save for cameras with mechanical zoom rings (which obviously can't prevent the user from using the zoom during the video recording, so they allow it), though, most cameras with small optics use zooms electronically operated (with zoom in/out buttons, tipically), and for those, it's much rarer to find zoom-while-recording-enabled ones. The reason usually given by the manufacturer is that the motor drive that extends the zoom makes a noise that would be catched up by the microphone in the audio recording.

The most usual exceptions are cameras using “folded optics” designs (mostly ultra-compact cameras, those with tiny lenses that don't extend outside the body when zooming), because those have somewhat quieter zoom mechanisms. Not all ultra-compact cameras allow video zooming, though: the Casio EX-V and Sony T ones do, while the Fujifilm Z series and Nikon Sxx series don't.

Done with theory, and into practical suggestions:
- The Casio EX-V line (EX-V7 and EX-V8)
- Panasonic TZ1 and TZ5 (but not the TZ2 or TZ3 models); TZ4, I don't know.
- Canon PowerShot S3 IS, S5 IS, TX1
- Sony H3, H5, and most (of not all) of the T series.

If you're in a budget, I'd suggest either the Casio EX-V7 or Panasonic TZ1, or some of the more modest Sony T series.

what camcorder will accept audio in from sound mixer?

Q. I'm looking for a camcorder that accepts audio in from sound mixer (via auxillary send from mixer) while recording live. Also, I would like to send the video while recording live from camcorder to projector (via HDMI). Also, I'd like to send audio/video to dvd recorder. Can all of this been done while recording live on camcorder and at the same time? If so, what camcorder can do this?

A. My Canon ZR camcorders (500, 800 and 930) have, when hooked to computer or when I did Paid events, such as weddings, the feed from the Main Mix Out on my Alto Audio Mixer - http://asimplelife.ca/specs.html fed into the MIC jack on the camcorder. These are not HDMI camcorders, so to hook to a Projector, I would use the AV jack, and Y cable, one to the Projector and one to the DVD recorder. Easy to do.

A. Most cameras will be good, but generally the more you spend the better it'll be. I like Sony and Canon. Ask this in the photography section, they'll be more likely to be able to help.

Could anyone suggest a good external mic for my camcorder ?

Q. I own a Panasonic HDC SD 41 camcorder and Im looking for a good external mic for it. It has a 3.5 mm socket. I only have a budget of not much over 100 euro. Any suggestions?

A. I do not know if this will help, I found online that they sell the APEX 750, a SM58 style Microphone for $29.99 USD. They work good, I have one hooked to a Alto L-6 Mixer then on to my Canon ZR930 and i sue this setup for my daily Vlog on youtube.

Any suggestions for what external mic I should buy for my Canon XL2?
Q. I have acquired a Canon XL2 camcorder for making short films and the like. I'd like to buy a good external mic for recording dialogue and so on, but can't afford to spend more than about £250-£300 tops, including windshield, pole etc (although I'm happy to buy 2nd hand).

What would people suggest is the best all-round option open to me?

A. At that price range you can't do wireless mics, so that's out of the question. So you will have to go shotgun and boom.

I'm adding links to some great articles and test done on different mics from different price ranges. There are some great mics in your price range. Take care.

What scenes would you show to advertise things?

Q. What scenes would you show to advertise things?Think of people doing different actions.
chocolates - jeans- telephone company- camcorder- insurance company

Example: To advertise a car I would show a driver breaking safely.

A. I did a minor in college... and one thing I learnt is that even if you are advertising a certain product, it is not compulsory to show the product... what matters is what you want to say in your ad

what is the best camcorder company there is?
Q. i've been wanting to buy a camcorder for quite a long time. however all of the companies that ive heard of are just barely out of my price range. my sister says i should just get a digital camera and record things from there. help me. what is your opinion on the best camcorders and why are they good

A. First of all, dont buy a digital camera to use as a camcorder, you will regret it. The best brand hands down is Panasonic. Get a camera with 3CCD on it. 3CCD has to do with the coloring, and trust me, it is worth getting. Good luck, but you cant go wrong with a Panansonic.

What's a good camcorder with a built-in light?

Q. I'm looking for a relatively small/cheap camcorder (good quality but not willing to spend like $1000 on it) with a built-in light. I can't seem to find any that aren't a ridiculous amount of money.

A. Admittedly I'm basing my answer entirely on my Canon HV20 (which originally retailed for $1000+ new,) but I doubt you'll find many good ones. Built-in lights will be small so it won't add bulk or sap too much power, and not really illuminate too much.

You'll probably be better served by purchasing a separate video light

Is HD camcorder quality supposed to be grainy indoors?
Q. I just bought a Sony HD camcorder (HDR SR10) but the quality of the videos are very grainy even though the resolution is 1920x1080. When I go outside where its very bright, the quality is very good but when I'm in my living room, where there's a decent amount of light, the quality's really grainy. Is this normal?

A. I haven't been too impressed with the hard drive camcorders. We tried an Everio...Nasty!

I'm surprised, Sony camcorders normally do awesome at night. We have an HDR HC-7 and love it. The SR5 & 7 are rated good for low-light conditions by Consumer Reports.org ( your model isn't listed).

You may verify that your settings are capturing at the full HD rate of 16 MPS. You could also try the "Nightshot" setting, although my experience is that it will contribute to your graininess. Last, you may try improving your light conditions. Perhaps your camcorder includes it's own light source? Good luck!

Can you recommend any websites where I can find good prices for a Sony Handy Cam?
Q. I was thinking about getting a Sony HDR -SR11. The best price I have found so far from websites with good reviews is Amazon with a price of $668.04 U.S dollars.Prefferably a new camcorder. Can you find a reputable website with a better price? Thanks in advance.

A. The Sony HDR-SR12 is THE camcorder to get... Recording in space saving SP is incredible but when I switch to the highest setting (FH) the picture details became almost three dimensional.
If you buy it from amazon you'll get more than $400 off.
This is a link I found for you..
http://www.amazon.com/Sony-HDR-SR12-Definition-Camcorder-Stabilized/dp/B00123WDR2/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1230493713&sr=1-1&tag=aor-sale-20

Hope this help..
Happy new years.
