Q. What video format does the Polaroid DVC-00725F HD camcorder record in? I'm thinking of getting one, but first I need to know what format it records in.
A. Looks like it captures directly to AVI format - one of the reviewers at Amazon listed that.

Looking for a HD camcorder that captures good pictures from the video. Any suggestions?
Q. Budget is about 400-600 but willing to pay more if it has features that are a must and really improve the quality of the videos and the camcorder. (ie. advanced image stabilizer etc.)

A. High end DSLR cameras can record 1080p video as independent 2 megapixel frames. That's by far the best quality for photo extraction as conventional HD recording mostly just saves the differences from the past frame. That's fine for video watching, but leads to poorer still extracts.
Look for cameras that have a large image sensor. Pretty much everything has image stabilization, but that's not a magic wand. It won't compensate for jerky holding, or a handheld zoom beyond 5x or so.
Speaking of zoom, ignore anything that says "digital zoom" Optical zoom is useful, digital trades quality for zoom. Zooming beyond 5x really needs a tripod for steady camera images.
The easiest way to transfer files to a computer is simply move the memory card to the computer's reader. Don't bother cabling the camcorder and computer together.
