should i buy a DSLR camers and a camcorder in india or thailand or malyasia or singapore?

Q. I am for a vacation to thailand, malaysia and singapore. I want to buy a a DSLR camers and a camcorder. I need advice that should i buy them in india or from the above mentioned countries. International warranty must be there.
thanks
vip
Pls specify the possible price differnce in the items and the cons of buying from there

A. I do not know about shopping in Thailand but comparing Singapore and Malaysia, the prices will be lower in Malaysia. This is because Singapore charges a 7% GST on all items. Of course, as a tourist, you can get refund when you exit. If you do not mind filling up the forms for the GST refunds, then Singapore and Malaysia's prices will be comparable.

Having said that, you have to do your homework on what the price of the camera is.Buy only from reputable stores. You may not get the best price but it will save you from been taken for a ride. As international warranty is important to you, state this upfront.

Does canon camcorder comes with default 1 year international warranty?
Q. Hi, I am going to purchase a Canon HV40 from B&H USA. I am getting it shipped in India. Though the product comes with 1 year default manufacturer warranty, Does it also cover International coverage? That means Canon India will repair it under warranty even though i bought it from canon USA?

A. I know SONY does but not sure about Canon, your only problem is that you are getting a camera that is NTSC, and not PAL. all the parts that are carried in India will be PAL. So if there is a problem you may either have to send it to the USA for repair or the company that is going to repair it will have to order the parts, and this could take some time.

The actual video will not be a problem as your computer will not care what format its in, and you can change it when you come to render it.

It probably wont hurt to contact Canon and talk to them direct.

What's a good digital, HD camera for COLOR?

Q. I need good, quality color, thanks.

A. Canon EOS Rebel T2i 18 MP CMOS APS-C Digital SLR Camera with 3.0-Inch LCD and EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS Lens
http://7thingsdigital.com/2010/04/20/canon-eos-rebel-t2i-18-mp-cmos-aps-c-digital-slr-camera-with-3-0-inch-lcd-and-ef-s-18-55mm-f3-5-5-6-is-lens/

Review: You can't get better than this for under $1000

I'm a frequent upgrader and loyal Canon fan. I traded up from an XSi last year to the T1i, and now this year to the T2i. I was within days of ordering the 7D until they announced the T2i, with all the features I wanted from the 7D at half the cost. I immediately pre-ordered the T2i and have been having some fun with it over the last 24 hours. The verdict so far? I am in love with this SLR.

I believe the last few iterations in the Rebel series have been comparable in quality. The T2i shares much of the same pros and cons with its predecessors, and ultimately, not too much has really changed. That said, the very minor things that did change were huge to me. I'm big into video, which is what got me looking into the 7D. Both the 7D and the T2i have the stereo audio input jack. My T1i just had the built-in mono mic which was unacceptable for someone who is doing more than home videos with this camera. So that feature, along with full manual control of video recording (not available in T1i), and 1080/24p (and 30p if that's your preference) makes this a common sense upgrade if you're serious about video. 720p/60 is also really cool for the silky smooth framerate, although I personally find the movie-like feel of 24p video best.

As for what the camera is really made for, still photography, it is still the king at (in the mid-entry-level DSLR class). 18 megapixels really, truly is more than any person really needs. My XSi from a couple years back met all my needs with 12mp, however, 18 creates for even better bragging rights to the general public. "How many megapixies is that thingy? Eighteen? OMG! You are such a pro!" Anyway, back on track now. The noise levels in most photos I've taken are pretty decent for 18 megapixels. It's comparable to the noise on the 15MP T1i from what I've experienced so far. 6400 ISO is now a default option instead of an expanded setting (12800 ISO still is), which is nice to have, though you'll hopefully never have to use it.

The kit lens is of course the same old 18-55 I've bought practically 5 times over now. A great budget lens and excellent value, but I absolutely can't go back to using it after buying some of the better lenses Canon has to offer. If the money's there, you will not regret investing another few hundred dollars some better glass. Otherwise, the 18-55 is a great lens to start out with.

Only major complaint I have is the white balance in incandescent lighting still isn't as accurate as I'd like. I also wish they kept the same LP-E5 battery so the two I already have would be compatible with both of my cameras. And a nitpick, the "Rebel" name is stupid, to be completely honest. It should be named "550D" as it is in the Europe market. SDXC support is cool, but I can't really comment on it as I'll be using SDHC cards for the foreseeable future. Oh, and the slightly redesigned buttons are a welcome change. A little more ergonomic than before.

In conclusion, if you're thinking about upgrading from a T1i, there isn't really a compelling reason to unless you are okay spending hundreds just for the sake of having the latest in gadgetry (what I do), UNLESS you are in it for the video support, which is AMAZING at this price point. You used to have to spend at least a couple thousand on a professional camcorder to get the kind of video support that you can now get in a consumer DSLR at a very reasonable price. Thanks, Canon! Oh, and amazon got it to me super fast too!

Which Video Camera that is hd that is good?
Q. i want an hd camera i am willing to spend a little more money and i want a video camera that is good for youtube.. i am will to spend anywhere from 30 to about 180 give or take... i really want one soon and when i keep checking reviews i keep finding cameras from 2010 i mostly want a camera of this year model...

Which Video Camera that is hd should I get????

A. Getting a HD video camcorder, irregardless of the video storage media, is a step back in video quality.

Consumer level HD camcorders have 4 problems. 1) Blurry, fuzzy, out of focus areas closely around people in videos taken by consumer level HD camcorders. 2) Any movement, even a wave or lifting an arm, while in front of a recording consumer level HD camcorder, results in screen ghosts and artifacts being left on the video track, following the movement. Makes for bad video, sports videos are unwatchable. 3) These Consumer level HD camcorders all have a habit of the transferred to computer files are something you need to convert, thus losing your HD quality, to work with your editing software. 4) Mandatory maximum record times - 1 hour, 30 minutes, 8 minutes, 3 minutes four different times advertised as maximum record time for some consumer level HD camcorders. No event I have ever been to is that short. Either take multiple camcorders or pack up with out getting the end of the event on video.

MiniDV is currently the most popular format for consumer digital camcorders. MiniDV camcorders are typically more affordable than their HDD and DVD counterparts. Each MiniDV tape will typically hold an hour of footage at normal recording speed and quality. MiniDV tapes are available for purchase at not only electronic and camera stores, but also at drugs stores and grocery stores, making them easy to find while your on vacation. There are literally hundreds of MiniDV camcorders available; both in standard and high-definition.

Canon makes many MiniDV tape camcorders, look into the Canon line.

Can you return something bought off walmart.com to a walmart store?

Q. I bought a camcorder off walmart.com, and noticed I accidently ordered a 720p one. I want a 1080p camera. Can I just take it to a regular walmart store to get my money back?

A. Yes, Just make sure you bring the box, any packaging, and your papers you printed off to pick up your order to the service desk.
They might put it on a gift card though, or you could exchange it for the right one and get a credit towards the new purchase.

Where can I find a memory card for my camcorder?
Q. I have a Jazz Dv153 pocket camcorder and it needs a 2gb memory card. I looked all over Ebay and I couldn't find one. Are there any other websites that sell these types of memory cards?

A. The Jazz DV153 uses SD (Secure Digital) or MMC (Multi Media Card) 2GB cards which are very common and are available at retailers such as Walmart, Bestbuy, RadioShack, etc. Or on-line at amazon.com, Buy.com, etc. Brands like Kingston, SanDisk, PNY are are well known brands. Some cards sold on Ebay are import non-brand cards and may not meet industry standards and thus the integrity of such cards will be in question. You want to trust that your video is safe on a brand name card.

What is the difference between a camcorder and a video camera?

Q. Somebody please tell me what is the difference, and also im going to start making short films and want a really high quality camera, (whichever has better quality and that out of camcorder and video camera)
what do you peoplez suggest? I'm willing to spend 1000 AUD
Thanks!

A. a video camera does not have an internal recorder. the main use of video cameras is in a television studio where the output goes to a vision mixer board and then recorded (or sent live to on-air picture). back in the day before camcorders, a portable video camera was cable connected to a portable VHS (or Beta) recorder. I still have a video camera, Panasonic WV F250 and it is cable connected to a Sony DVcam digital recorder. In the past it was used with analog recorders, so the big plus with video cameras was they could adapt to new recording media, where as camcorders are stuck with just one media.
for 1000 AUD you only choice is a camcorder. if you can find an HDV unit for that price that would be your best option.
perhaps you meant a digital camera when you said video camera. those too can shoot video, but they are awkward to hold and operate live. a dSLR requires a lock down tripod to get video that doesn't shake. depending on the subjects of your short films that might be satisfactory.

How do I download pictures from sharper image mini portable camcorder, onto my computer, so I can view them?
Q. I'd like to download pictures onto my computer, so I can view and print pictures. It won't let me get to that point. I have the camcorder hooked up correctly. It won't show the pictures.

A. Most camcorders need to put in playback.review mode. If it takes a memory card then you can use a usb card reader.

A camcorder that I can customize?

Q. I am looking for a camera that I can completely customize to look the way I want it too. Something similar to this http://www.gadgetsee.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/Samsung-H200-Full-HD-Camcorder-1.jpg
but I want to be able to add a shotgun microphone, wide lenses, ect... So it can look a bit "professional" And my price range for a camera would be $400-450

Thank you in advance

A. I'm afraid you may have to spill over your budget a little. Professional camera's don't come cheap. What I would suggest doing is getting a cheap DSLR, like the Panasonic Lumix G2, then a shoulder rig for it. Shoulder rigs are fully customisable, working of an industry standard 15mm rail, you can slide anything on. The basic set up would be double under handles, shoulder mount, follow focus and matte box. I have put some links in the sources (one of the Lumix G2, and one of a budget shoulder rig, and one for a microphone) that you may wish to look into. You can then buy microphones, spot lights etc that slip into the hotplate on the top of the DSLR. Also, because of the nature of DSLRs, you can buy as many lenses and filters - including wide angle ones - as you can afford. Not only with this result in great quality video, it will also look pro.

Your budget is a little low for this kind of thing; for the complete set up I would probably say around $800. The good news is that all the rigs are customisable, and you can buy the parts separately, which means you can just get the camera body at first, film a few weddings or something and then you'll be able to afford the next item... and so on.

What should I get my boyfriend for Christmas?

Q. We have been together for almost 2 years, he's 23 and we both have 3 year old little boys. He is a sports journalist and a football fanatic! Last year I got him a watch and a video camera. I really want to get him something awesome this year, he deserves it. Any ideas???

A. A nice leather bag to put all his stuff when he goes out?

what is the best digital video camcorder to use for professional website videos?
Q. I am a journalist, and need to videotape interviews of executives in their offices for website clips in Youtube format. I need one that will have good sound and lighting.

A. Lighting will not come from the camera if you need lighting then you will need extra lighting. as for the audio most interviews are conducted using an external mic, the reason for this is that camcorder mics are omnidirectional, they pick up sound from every where. you need something that will only capture the interviewees (does not look right) voices.

For that sort of work you probably get away with using a flash drive camera, but for assured quality taope based is better. you do not give a budget, so its impossible to give you models, as I dont know your budget, but if the video is being put on youtube then the quality does not have to be that good , once they have compressed the video any quality will be reduced.

How do I turn my camcorder into an infrared camera?

Q. I'm a paranormal investigator and am looking to use my camcorder only at night. I know that I have to purchase IR lights. How do I attach them? Also, do I need to remove a blocker from inside the lens?

A. The IR lights can be used independently from your cam. Just point them in the same direction as the camera lens.
Unless you have a videocam with a nightshot setting such as some of the Sony models, you will have to remove the anti-alias filter in front of the imaging sensor. Whether removing this (often tiny) filter is economically viable, is very debatable because after its removal the distance between the lens and sensor must be recalibrated, and requires specific knowledge of the camera type used, and quite often, special instruments with very fine tolerances.
Before having your camera converted, you could try whether its IR sensitivity is enough to pick up some of the IR beams of your IR illuminator. A simple test will do: point the IR remote of your tv set towards your camera in the dark, press a few buttons on your remote, and check whether or not your videocam recorded any of the IR signals/flashes from your remote. This will give you an indication of the IR recording capabilities of your camera.

Alternatvely, you could look at various night scopes with a so-called video-out jack. They can be expensive, but the $398 Yukon Ranger 5x42 LT for instance (see link below), has a (NTSC) video output which lets you attach a (portable) video recording device, and has built-in IR flashlight.

What features should be considered while buying a digital video recorder or camcorder?

Q. I want to buy one recorder because I am going for a LONG HOLIDAY. Whenever I flip through the magazines looking for a video camera, I notice several specifications like:

Digital Zoom
Optical Zoom
Mega pixel

What features are most important for tourism where we need good zoom, quality, nightmode & much more??

A. I would love to answer this question for you. As a tip from my Rome Vacation it is important to get really good quality to bring back good video for others to enjoy for the future. Take Notes because here is the LIST:

Optical Zoom: Real important because digital zoom is pure bogus.
Hard Drive (HDD): Tapes are VERY hard to work with. With a HDD camcorder you can record for hours.
A Good Brand: JVC, Sony, and Canon are the best. Not Teen-Tech, Vivitar, or Aiptek

These are the KEY FACTORS for looking at camcorders. As an amateur these things stand out the most.

Is it possible for a camcorder to have 100x optical zoom? Would it be possible to use even with a tripod?
Q. My cousin has a camcorder with 70x optical zoom and it works fine.
I recently saw one that had 78x optical zoom, it was Panasonic.

Why do people say it wouldn't be possible to have 100x optical zoom?
78x optical zoom isn't that much less than 100x.

A. optical zoom over 20x is not very practical. megazoom is a result of using very tiny CCD imagers. for a 1/4 inch format CCD, the normal focal length is 4mm, 20x is 80mm which is 3 inches a rather reasonable size lens for a plam held camcorder. 100x would be 400mm or 15 inches, that is a lot of glass to hang in front of a 1 inch thick camera. then there is the problem of light gathering. for reasonable pictures in daylight, the lens needs a minimum iris opening of f4. the "f" factor is the ratio of focal length divided by lens diameter. so for 400mm to achieve f4 it would need to be 100mm diameter or 4 inches. But you might realize that the biggest problem is stability, to prevent blur, OIS is usable to 20x. That prevents blur but it does not control bounce or similar unintended movement, that is you will have sharp images of something that is bouncing. Here is where a tripod is needed. Television sports cameras use 40x to 50x lenses from Center field at baseball, or stadium top for football. But that camera is mounted on a $250,000 vibration supression mount, not a simple tripod. The megazoom may be something of value for still digital photos where the effective shutter speed can be increased to get a clear single frame. CCDs are getting down to 1/8th inch size with would reduce the example numbers in half. but then you have to cram the 12 elements used in a normal servo zoom (one that tracks focus) into minimum thickness of 2mm. that is why the flip cameras don't have optical zoom. and the funny thing is, all the sports people want to put "baby death" super fisheye lenses on their cameras, just the opposite of megazoom.

How can I get night vision/mode on my camcorder?

Q. I have a JVC- Everio, and I can't seem to find the "night mode" on it, even though the guide says it has it. How do I activate it?

A. unfortunately most camcorders either come with it or don't if yours does not have it then your out of luck also most night vision for camcorders suck your better off buying some lighting equipment to film at night.

Does a camcorder have to be 0 lux to pick up infrared light?
Q. I want to be able to shoot in complete or near complete darkness. The camcorder I'm looking to buy is 1.7 lux with it's night time mode. I was wondering if I got an infrared light to go with it, if it would pick it up or if it has to be a 0 lux camera for that to be possible?

A. IR has little to do woth lux - it has to be sensitive to infrared light - period.

Can i have a link for a HD professional camcorder around £600?

Q. Can i have a link for a HD professional camcorder around £600. It must be a good camera for making films and it can't be a camera made in 2001 and below. Thx.

A. Nope. A "professional camcorder" will have a lens diameter of 70mm or larger, a 3CCD or 3COMS imaging chip array that is 1/3 inch or larger and XLR audio-in connectors. There is no camcorder with these features that meets you price. The closest is the Canon XHA1.

Help with choosing a camcorder with good sound quality?
Q. Ok, I've asked questions about camcorders, microphones, and webcams that have good sound quality. And I've found the perfect thing, a Panasonic HDC-SD100 HD Digital Camcorder. But guess what, it costs a little less than 1000 dollars. And thats too much. Is there any other camcorders that are similar to this one, but has a little smaller price tag? I'm okay with bad video quality, but I need the sound quality.

A. Here's a bit of camcorder insight: no matter how much you spend on a camcorder, the built-in mic sucks! Obviously some are better than others, but none would be sufficient for real professional stuff. Built-in mics have an omni-directional pickup pattern which means it picks up sound in every direction. It sounds nice, but it's not. You pick up annoying background noise, and the overall sound is unfocused and quite has quite a bit of echo. So my advice is to get the cheapest camcorder with a 3.5mm mini-stereo microphone input which will allow you to connect external mics...

Some cheap** ones: Canon ZR series (starting at $200-ish. But not all have the mic input, so make sure of that. I know the ZR40 has one, as well as the newer models the ZR900 and ZR930. If I'm correct, the older models of Canon Opturas have them as well (like the Optura 10). I believe the Panasonic PV GS500-ish (can't remember the exact number) has one too.
Your cheapest option is to get the ZR900 (or if you can find a used model of the ZR40 or Optura 10).

Now that you've save a lot o money, you have more to spend on a good external mic. If you want to go the cheap route, get a nice mini-stereo shotgun:
1) RODE VideoMic
2) Sennheiser MKE300
3) Azden SGM-X
4) Audio-Technica ATR-55

If you want the absolute best audio, get an XLR adapter (the good kind, not those crappy XLR female to mini-male cables) like those made by Beachtek for around $180, and get a pro XLR mic:
1) Sennheiser ME66
2) RODE NTG-2 (or NTG-1)

the Azden SGM-1X is pretty good too, and cheap :)

Hope that helps!!!

What is the best affordable camcorder in quality?

Q. I am looking for a good value camcorder. Any brand or type is alright with me. Any recommendations will be much appreciated. Thank you. :)

A. What is your budget?

What do you need the camcorder to do?

Who is your audience?

"affordable" means different things to different people.

The "best" and no stated budget?

High end? Red One. Maybe Silicon Imaging.

Pro grade? Sony XDCAM series, HDCAM series; Canon XLH or XH series; Panasonic AG-HVX series; JVC GY-HM100.

Prosumer? Sony HDR-FX1000... or jump to the higher end of the HVR series.

Consumer? Canon HV40.

If the above are to much, then consumer cams in the standard definition Canon ZR960 or FS100 are decent.

As the cameras get less expensive, the lenses and imaging chips get smaller and their low-light behavior diminishes. Manual controls get buried in a menu and audio control is lost.

Pocket cams less than about $250 can work well IF you stay within their limitations... Always under good light, always with audio that is not loud and not soft, always on some sort of steadying device (tripod, chair, table, whatever) and never handheld. Never use digital zoom. Stray from these recommendations - or try to make a camcorder work outside its specifications - and any cam will not provide acceptable results.

What is the best type of Camcorder to use?
Q. I need a good quality camcorder for shooting videos. What kind should I use and how much? Thanks.

A. What other requirements do you have?

What environmental conditions do plan to be under - or do you want to plan for as many conditions as possible? Poor lighting? High audio levels? Commercial, prosumer or home-video?

What kind of quality are you expecting?

What is your budget?

Will you be editing? What with (application) and on (computer)?

Overall, in the consumer space, the Canon HV30 and HV40 are probably the best value and most flexible, but assume your computer has a firewire port and your editing software can deal with HDV format video. The HF S series for tapeless - they are flash memory based are next in line.

Then the "prosumers"... Sony HDR-FX1000 and HDR-FX7...

The the Pros... Canon XH and XLH series, Sony HVR-Z1, Z5, Z7; Panasonic AG-DVX and HVX series; JVC GY series... there are many more, but this is a good starting point...

Pocket cams up to about $250.
Consumers up to about $1,200
Prosumers up to about $3,000
Pro... above that.

Mics? Cases? Tripods? Video lights?

what kind of camera and sound equipment do I need to shoot a documentary?

Q. I am filming a documentary and I need to know what sort of camera and what kind of sound equipment I need to purchase. I also need to know if this equipment is easy to train people on, or if it would be smarter to try to hire people who already have experience and training with this sort of equipment. If so, where do I find these people? What is the most basic sort of camera I can use and what is the most advanced, and what difference would that make? I plan on making this a professional looking documentary that I can enter into film festivals. Thanks!

A. It depends on how picky you are, what sort of audio is being recorded and where the audio is being recorded.

For example, audio captured live during a drag race or other noisy environment will have different mic needs than if the audio is captured inside a room where there is little noise.

Another example has music recording - as opposed to just talking heads or recording the noise a cat makes when purring.

Does the equipment need to be portable? Is a 2-channel field recorder (like a Zoom H4n) enough or is a 16 (or more) track board required along with a Digidesign/ProTools set-up and computer interface?

Shotgun mic, lavalier, handheld dynamic mic... wired or wireless... stereo or mono mics... the list is endless.

We don't know anything about the project, your budget or where you are. The complexity of the project can dictate all these things. If you think this is complex, then see if the local community college has a media or audio-for-film class - and meet with the instructor.

As for cameras... well, if you have to ask, then you might want to be taking the classes...

Consumer cameras and camcorders have small lenses and small imaging chips. They cannot do well under low light conditions. They have few manual controls - and those that are available are usually accessed through a menu. As the cameras and camcorder increase in price the lenses and imaging chips get bigger and the commonly used manual controls move to the outside of the camcorder/camera. As well, at the low end, the video compression is very high - this results in low quality video. As the cameras/camcorder increase in price, the compression goes down and the video quality goes up.

If the lighting is ALWAYS good (bright, sunny daylight, outdoors), them pretty much any camcorder will do - assuming you are not very picky. In my opinion, the *least* I would use would be a Sony HDR-FX1000. Low compression HDV format. Most advanced - for your needs probably something from Red (Epic, One, Scarlet). HDV records only 1080i video. Red cameras can capture 4K video at very low compression. And any in-between (like any from the Sony HDCAM/XDCAM or Panasonic Varicam areas... or the Canon XF300 series... Some would even suggest a good dSLR that happens to capture good high definition video as "convenience feature".

But when all is said and done, someone with experience and skill using the least expensive camera available can produce awesome content - and someone with no experience and skill using the most expensive/best gear available will generally turn out not so awesome content.

Where are these experienced people? They are trying to make a living being independent audio engineers and cinematographers. There are near or recently finished from film school. They are at community colleges teaching - or are wedding videographers hoping a compelling script comes along. Maybe they have regular day-jobs and have been doing this sort of thing for a LONG time but it can't pay the bills... Or they work at corporate AV companies or hotel AV departments... they are lots of places...

Why do professional camcorders use tapes and not hard drive?
Q. I am looking to buy a professional camcorder, and am just wondering why they all use tapes and not hard drives? Does using tapes offer better quality? Also, what is a good professional camcorder to buy?
I have a budget of about £18,000 for 5 cameras.

A. Your right, Tape based camcorders do produce a much higher quality video. Until you start to get into the higher end such as Red a basic camera would be around $30, 000 certainly out of my price range.

So us mortals have to use the best we can, its all down to compression, the more the video is compressed the less information in actually saved. Sure tape based video is compress but we are talking about the amount of compression, uncompressed video runs at about 85GB per hour, there are not many flash drive camcorders that can one hold this amount of data, two can handle the data transfer rate. Hard drive cameras are not much better obviously they can save/hold more.

If you watch outside broadcasts, you will see many tape based camcorders, even documentaries will use them. are you looking for a "professional" camcorder or a "prosumer" camcorder. the latter is more of a half way between the two, most people (unless you are a trained camera man) would opt for this type of camera, they give you the best of both worlds automatic features such as exposure and focus, but also to be able to use manual controls. the more you pay the better the quality but the less things there are to help you out.

You do not give a budget, but you would need to start at around $2500 minimum, then work upwards.

Canon, Sony make good quality equipment, but obviously other manufacturers do have cameras for that market.

Again with out a budget there is no point in suggesting a $3000 camera when you only want to pay $1000 or 500

What can I record a shotgun mic onto?

Q. Cheap options please.. if there is an iPod app or some android app I would love to know! Thanks

A. You shotgun microphone has a XLR end, get the proper cable to be able to hook it to a Digital Audio Recorder (DAR) From that XLR end, you can attach a XLR to XLR or XLR to 1/4 inch plug. Most all audio equipment works with those two plugs. If you need to go smaller, get a 1/4 to 3.5 MM adapter, that will allow you to plug it into camcorders and computers and probably your iPod

Your DAR can be something like H4N or a laptop, running audio capture software, like Audacity. I have no idea if people are using iPods for DAR devices, but if they can record audio, have a microphone jack, why not.

Is there a video downloading iPhone app that lets you save it to Camera roll?
Q. Please tell me what sites it would support

A. Hi Marc, and welcome to Yahoo!Answers:

Since this is your first couple of days on Y!A, you might wish to post this type of Question in either the "PDAs & Handhelds" or "Music & Music Players" Y!A Category, since most of the iPhone/iPod apps questions tend to be discussed there.

Since it's video-related, you might find someone here in "Camcorders" who knows about a suitable video app, though. There's a good possibility that one like you describe exists, since from what I know about Apple's "CameraRoll" object class, FlashPlayer video objects can now be stored and retrieved as CameraRoll media objects. (See Adobe Flash reference forum on "CameraRoll": http://help.adobe.com/en_US/FlashPlatform/reference/actionscript/3/flash/media/CameraRoll.html )

Traditionally, Apple iPhones haven't been Flash-compatible, and since YouTube was originally FlashPlayer-based but was adding QuickTime H.264 video codecs a few years ago, Apple announced AppleTV & iPhone compatibility (mid-2007) with the popular video site. And now that Adobe has released "AIR 3.2" last month (with ActionScript & FlashPlayer compatibility for iOS phones & gadgets) you'll see more non-H.264 video & YouTube-style apps hitting the market.

Most iPhone/iPod people organize their media files in iTunes, since Camera Roll is just an unorganized series (whereas iTunes can categorize into folders). Since RealPlayer announced Android & iOS compatible beta-versions, and has a "Download this Video" tab when used with browsers, perhaps it can handle what you want to do.

I'll poke around the web and see what's out there in RealPlayer app features (whether the free Mac download or the $39 full version). I know RealNetworks' "RealDownloader" can download videos directly to iTunes, but it's only a PC-based browser plug-in, so you'd have to sync your iPhone to a PC for transferring media.

Meanwhile, someone else might chime in with some suggestions.

hope this helps,

I need some sort of external microphone for my camcorder?

Q. I have an Insignia 10MP Full HD camcorder that i just got and after filming for a bit and editing, i realised that it has a terrible microphone. Any ideas as to what i could do or possibly products i could buy as a separate microphone? help!

Camcorder best for low light situations?
Q. Friend of mine is in a band and some of the places they would play are in bars so the lighting is kinda dim. Looking for a camcorder that would be best in this type of situation also will need an external mic input. Will be running sound from a mixer board into the camera for the best sound. What should I look for in the specs to determine of decent for low light?

Thanks.

A. You would want a miniDV tape based camera to do this My Canon ZR 930 shoots in very low lighting situation. Shot one wedding where they turned out the overhead lights. It was very low light, lower than I believe any bar I have been in. Client was pleased with the video.

How do I figure out the lens distortion on my Canon HD camcorder?
Q. I recently got a new Canon Vixia HF R10 HD camcorder. I do a lot of visual effects work and Id like to use some new footage I shot. I need to know what the radial lens distortion of this camera is, but I'm not sure how to find it.
Secondly, whats the best way to convert the footage from my camcorder? The raw clips from the camcorder are .MTS files, which I'm having a hard time opening.
Any tips or ideas?

A. Hi "UFO":

The best way for you to determine the lens distortion is the "empirical method": just shoot some test charts at different zoom & distance settings. Either talk-along with your test footage, noting the zoom point, etc., or "slate" each setting with a note card & dark marker.

Both grid and concentric circle charts will tell you how much radial distortion the lens contributes. Read up on the topic with either a Yahoo!Search or the excellent Wikipedia article: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Distortion_(optics)

If you can't buy or generate your own good reference charts, go to a fabric store and buy some cross-hatch/plaid (thin grid lines) and some perfect circle patterned fabrics (use the Wikipedia article pictures as a guide) or some paper archery targets. Just be careful when using fabric, so you don't introduce distortions by stretching the cloth.

As for camcorder footage conversion, depending on what editing software you have, the best conversion is NO conversion. You should always edit using the native camera format, since any time you convert compressed (MPEG4, and up-converted at that) video you are losing quality.

If you post what software packages you have for editing, using the "Additional Details" link, I can give you better file import/conversion tips.

hope this helps,

How do I upload videos from the camcorder?

Q. Hello, I have recently acquired a Samsung SCL810 camcorder but I don't exactly know how to upload videos to my computer. I have an S-video cable hooked into my computer and into my camcorder but It didn't come with a CD-rom or any interfaces. Im not really looking any "special effects" I just want to upload me playing guitar to youtube. Any advice would be greatly appreciated Thanks! Oh and I am on a serious budget so please no $200 something crazy interfaces please!

A. The Samsung SCL810 is an analog, Hi8 tape, based camcorder. There is no "direct" connection from that camcorder to a computer. This is not a digital camcorder. Digtal tape based camcorders use miniDV and digital8 tape.

You did not tell us which computer, but chances are about 99.99% that the s-video connection is video out only. Not 2-way and not inbound to the computer (many laptops use this to connect to a projector).

To get video from that camcorder into the computer, an "analog/digital converter" or capture card is needed. Connect the camcorders AV cables (s-video is video only so remember to connect the audio cables if you choose to use the s-video connection - but don't connect the yellow composite video connection to anything) to the A/D converter or capture card. The low-end A/D converters connect to the computer with USB, the better ones connect with firewire; the capture cards use a PCI slot. See Roxio, Hauppauge, Pinnacle (Dazzle), Canopus, Black Magic.

What movie camera should I buy for school plays and does the Epson Movie Mate Projector come with sound?
Q. I wish to take videos of the school play practice and play it for the kids to improve their acting skills. What is a good video camera for this use and what projector should I use with it?

A. It depends on what your budget is... if your looking for something that is a good buy, reliable, and affordable i would recommend Canon Vixia HV30. The camcorder is an HD MiniDV camcorder that has high rated definition (so u can see the kids acting expressions :) ), 10X optical zoom plus one of the best image stabilizers. Another bonus is that it only weighs 1.3 pounds, is an average size, and the battery lasts for over an hour ( if the play lasts around an hour this would be a good buy so that you wont have to charge it too often). The playback controls are very easy to control, so if you want to correct the kids on their skills, you can playback the video and advise them on the spot.

The camcorder ranges around $825. And like i mentioned...it depends on your budget. if you want something cheaper theres the Sony HDR-CX100 which is just about as good and it goes for $525.

I REALLY/HIGHLY recommend consumerreports.com, great website for the best consumer products, next time you decide to purchase anything look there... except i think u have to subscribe. (sorry)

Anyway, consumer reports gave the CANON Vixia HV30 the max... 5 stars.

Hope I helped :)

What is the cheapest camcorder with slow motion capacity?

Q. I would like a camcorder for my birthday that has slow motion capacity. Under 300 dollars would be useful, but I know there aren't that many at that price. I want the best quality, however, for that price range. I don't want a camera with 5 fps, god no.

A. Recording at a slow frame rate won't provide you with very good slow motion playback. You want to record at a high frame rate...

For example, some Sony camcorders have a "SmoothSlowRecord" feature that allows fast frame rate capture (120 fps) for a 3 second burst. When played back at NTSC standard 30 fps, the playback takes 12 seconds (or 25% of the original speed). The Casio Exilim line has longer high frame rate capture.

If you just use the camcorder's 30 fps capture and have the video editor slow the playback, when you get to about 15 fps (or 50% of the original speed) is when the video starts being a bit jerky...

Photron and Vision Research (and others) make high speed cameras that can do 300 fps, 1,000 fps and even 3,000 fps or higher - they are expensive.

Anyone know of a board that can control multiple camcorders?

Q. My church is about to purchase 3 camcorders to record services with. Our main problem is how to merge the 3 feeds. I know we need a controller board to do that with, but I don't even know what they're called. My only media training was on an old SEG board from the 80's. And we're looking for something relatively cheap (under $400.00). Thanks in advance.

A. "Video Mixer".

What handycam is currently the best ?
Q. What is the best handycam out there in the store currently ? I would prefer if the price is under $400.00.

A. http://www.amazon.com/Sony-DCR-DVD105-Handycam-Camcorder-Optical/dp/B000E0G00K.
This isn't the best , but I think It has the most value for money. At Amazon they link you to some people that sell it new for as little as $327.00 + $5.49 shipping.
Here are some features and a description.

From the Manufacturer
Enjoy up to 500 lines of horizontal resolution with the Advanced HAD CCD on the DCR-DVD205 Handycam camcorder. You'll enjoy crisp and clear monitoring and playback on the 2.5-inch-wide touch-screen LCD display. And you'll enjoy versatility in your home movies with Super NightShot Plus infrared for low-light shooting and plenty of scene and Picture Effect modes for extra creativity.
1/6-Inch Advanced HAD CCD Imager, 680K Pixels Gross
1/6-inch Advanced HAD (Hole Accumulation Diode) CCD with 340K (effective) pixels provides stunning detail and clarity with exceptional video (up to 500 lines of horizontal resolution) and still image performance.

20x Optical/800x Digital Zoom
The optical zoom helps to bring the action close up from far away. In addition the Digital Zoom Interpolation means that extreme digital zooming is clearer, with less distortion than previous types of digital zooms.

Professional Quality Carl Zeiss Vario- Tessar Lens
Carl Zeiss lenses have an advanced optical multi-layer coating that offers less glare and flare with increased contrast. This results in vivid image brilliance, true-to-life color saturation and perfect renditions of subtle tones.

DVD Format Video Recording
The DVD recording format delivers digital picture and sound quality comparable to that of MiniDV, but on DVD. Playback of the DVDs couldn't be simpler. After finalizing the disc in the camcorder, the disc can play back in most DVD Players, computers and even PlayStation 2 video game consoles.

DVD-R/RW and +RW Compatible
The DCR-DVD105 is compatible with a variety of DVD formats allowing the easy of use and simplicity found in DVD Media. With DVD+RW media there is not a need to finalize the disc (minimum recording required). Simply remove the disc and insert the media into a compatible DVD Player.

2.5-Inch Touch Panel SwivelScreen LCD Display (123K Pixels)
Provides excellent viewing clarity with improved resolution. The high resolution 123K pixel LCD screen rotates up to 270 degrees for multiple viewing angles providing sharp, detailed images for monitoring or playback.

SteadyShot Picture Stabilization System
Picture stabilization system that uses motion sensors to detect and compensate for camera "shake" without compromising picture quality like some other digital stabilization systems.

InfoLithium Battery with AccuPower Meter System
Charge the battery at anytime because unlike NiCad (Nickel Cadmium) batteries, Sony's rechargeable Lithium Ion batteries are not subject to a life shortening "memory effect". Sony's exclusive AccuPower meter displays the battery time remaining in minutes, in either the viewfinder or on the LCD screen.

Manual Focus
Allows the user to manually adjust the focus of the camcorder using the touch panel. Manual focusing also allows the user to control the focus in difficult situations where either the environment or the subject does not allow the camcorder's auto focus to perform optimally, such as when shooting through a window or in a crowded environment.

Super NightShot Plus Infrared System
With Sony's Super NightShot Infrared System you can capture natural looking video, even when shooting in low light. Record subjects up to 20 feet away using the built-in infrared system, but without the overall monochrome color common with earlier low-light recording systems.

Stamina Battery Power Management System
Using the optional NP-FP90 InfoLithium Battery, the DCR-DVD105 can continuously record for up to 8 hours on a single full charge, providing extra long battery life.

Picture Effects
Get creative when recording or playing back your videos with Sony's Picture Effect Modes. Effects available in Camera mode: Monotone, Mosaic, Pastel and Sepia. Effects available in Playback mode: Monotone, Mosaic, Pastel and Sepia.

Fader Effects
Enhance your personal videos by adding professional looking fader effects. Choose from Black, Overlap, White and Wipe.

Program AE (Auto Exposure) Modes
Program AE modes make recording easy even when filming in challenging situations. Choose from Beach and Ski, Landscape, Portrait, Spotlight, Sports Lesson, and Sunset and Moon.

Battery Information
At the touch of a button, battery information is displayed on the LCD screen when charging and when the camcorder is turned off. The display will show how much the battery is charged, in 10% increments and the recordable time left when using the LCD screen or in the viewfinder.

Why are my HD videos Laggy/choppy once i upload them into my video editing software?

Q. I recently bought a HD camcorder (Vixia HF20) so i could film snowboarding and longboarding in crisp clear HD. when i load them to my computer and put them in my HD editing software (Magix pro edit 17) they appear to be laggy and dont run smoothly. i already tried lowering the resolution on the videos but nothing had changed. NOTE the videos run smoothly BEFORE i put them in my editing software. why is this?

A. Hey Hippo,

this could be because your video editor isn't optimised to edit and play large HD files.

You can check out trakAxPC Pro. It's a new editing suite that allows you to edit and mix any combination of audio, video (HD) and photos. You can record from your webcam, do effects, text, split screen, reverse, slow-motion etc, plus upload your video directly to YouTube through the application. There is a free forever lite version and paid pro version available.

You can check it out here: http://www.trakax.com/software/pc/

Hope this helps

What type of computer should I get for editing Cannon Hg20 Vixia Full HD?
Q. Here is my camera http://www.usa.canon.com/cusa/consumer/products/camcorders/consumer_camcorders/vixia_hg20#Overview

My computer right now (HP pavilion Slimline) cannot handle the HD.

The footage comes out skippy in sony vegas.

I was wondering the computer best for me, like a mac ect..?

A. If you buy Mac, we've heard stories here, about problems with cameras talking with a Mac. I believe it's because 95% of the planet runs on windows these cameras don't relate well to Apple.

Okay, that said, you can buy a card reader for little $$. As I understand it, readers do talk with Mac.

Either way you're going to need software.

Going to Disneyworld in a couple of weeks, What should I bring?

Q. Well the title says it all. Im staying at the Radisson Worldgate Hotel if that helps this out at all. Ill be there for four nights so what should i bring? This is my first time traveling such a distance and for this amount of time.

A. If you have never been to Disneyworld before you are in for such a treat. Its an amazing place. There is a lot to see. You will actually not be able to see everything so look online and plan ahead to see what is important for you to see.

What to bring:
Number one is comfortable walking shoes. Make sure they are well worn in and very comfortable the parks are HUGE and you will be doing more walking then you normally do.

it sounds like you are coming first part of March. That time of year the weather is usually in the mid to low 70's in the day and 50's to 60's at night. Bring your shorts and swimsuits but make sure you bring a jacket or a sweatshirt for night or if we get a cold snap and the day time temps drop to the 50's. Although chances are it will be warm days and cool nights. The Florida sun at anytime of year can be a little intense for yankees so make sure you bring a sun hat, sunglasses and sun block.

When you are actually inside the park make sure you pack light. Carrying around a backpack, purse, camcorder, camera and other stuff can get heavy and be a burden.

Most of all dont worry, If you forget something you can always purchase them here. All the stores you have at home such as Target are right down the street from your hotel. We also has some incredible outlet malls near your hotel as well.

Enjoy!

If you use non sony DVDs with a sony camcorder can it hurt or damage the camera?

Q. If you have a non brand DVD of the Camcorder Brand Will it damage the Camcorder

A. No it will be ok, BUT its better to go for branded disks rather than the mega cheap ones they wont damage your camera but you may get more read write errors. You do get something for paying just that little but more.

I brought some DVD's no brand and very cheap out of 100, 20 were no good, I brought some slightly better ones out of 100 none were faulty.

Good luck

What is the best digital camcorder lens for videos and picture?
Q. I decided to buy a camcorder, but I have trouble deciding which is the best Lens for digital video camcorder and the brand. I need your expert help to me to choose the rigth camcorder.

Please tell me out of your own experience.
What type of camcorder is the best ?
What type of lens is the best?
Which brand camcorder last long?
What to look out for new camcorders.

A. with consumer camcorders, you take the lens that comes with the camera. professional video cameras that offer replaceable lenses do not take still pictures, that is a marketing "feature" of consumer grade cameras only. Pro gear uses large format ccd's, often 2/3 inch size, so a 16x lens is a pretty hefty piece of glass. Consumer 1/6 inch ccds can be fitted with a cheap 40x short focal length lens as no big deal. The most common manufacterers of pro-mount video lenses are Fujinon and Canon.

Should I get a camcorder or a digital camera?
Q. My friend needs a "photo-taking device" for a trip she is taking. She's going to be photographing, but may be 300 ft away from them. Should she get a camera with high megapixels and less zoom than a camcorder, or a camcorder with high zoom and less megapixels? She is only allowed to take one?

Please shed some light, looking to buy a camera for top notch HD video and stills. What to buy? Advice?

Q. First of all, thank you so much for your willingness to share your expertise. Starting a production company that will be filming all types of events. Mostly weddings, documentaries, corporate seminar type stuff. Not shooting Avatar here. Looking for professional advice only. We need a solution to shooting video, capturing good audio, and stills in one piece of equipment. Looking at the Canon 7D currently. Price range needs to be kept under $2,000USD.

A. The Canon 7D is a great mid-range dSLR for capturing still images.

It's video cabilities are pretty good, too - Since it captures to h.264 format video MOV files, I presume your video editing environment can deal with these files. Using a current Mac and Final Cut would be best. iMovie will work, too (but be careful with the mode selected - not all will work). Most Windows based editors will require the MOV video files to be transcoded to something the editor can deal with... Lots of transcordrs out there - be sure the one you select does not drop the video out of high definition otherwise you are sort of defeating the purpose of recording in high definition.

Please keep in mind that video is more than moving images - there is the audio portion and this is where most DSLRs fall when compared to camcorders. If you are planning to use an external audio capture device (Zoom H2 or H4 - there are lots of others) to get the audio (then import when you are editing the video, and sync), then this discussion is moot - but if you are depending on the dSLR to get acceptable audio for you, you really need to re-think this.

So... here's the advice: I would strongly suggest that you use a camcorder for video and the dSLR for stills - and maybe occassional video... but combining the two is still not there.

While we're here, how are you planning to archive the captured video if you don't use digital tape? You migh want to investigate a RAID1 hard drive array... NetGear, Promise, Buffalo and others make small business Network Attached Storage systems that might meet your needs - EMC, HP and others make larger systems... They can be pretty expensive... At $3 per 60 minute miniDV tape (or the equivalent of up to 63 minutes of HDV format video which would take up 44 gig of computer hard drive space when uncompressed), it is still a cheap $/gig capture and storage media.

At your stated budget, the Sony HDR-FX7 prosumer (sibling to the pro-grade HVR-V1) is about it...

And if you watch the Avatar credits, the cameras used were from Panavision. I think they start at about $100,000... Lenses are more.

What is the best standard def camcorder for under $500?
Q. Right now, I don't have any standard definition screens. Therefore, I don't need an hd camcorder right now. What is the best standard def camcorder for my price level? I have a fast laptop for video editing. My main concern is video quality and reliability. What would you recommend? I will use it for everything (recording indoors and outdoors, both day and night).
Are you positive that those are the best standard def cameras in my price range?

A. Canon ZR900, ZR930.

No consumer camcorder (less than $2,000) does well in low light.
