Is There a Way to Have External Audio go With a Video Camera with No Mic Input Jack on it?

Q. I need external microphone usage but there are really good and fairly inexpensive camcorders which don't have it. Any remedies?
Would a USB-audio adapter work?

A. I am not aware of an "really good camcorder" without a mic jack. Perhaps our definitions are different... In my book, if it is a "really good camcorder", then it will have a mic jack AND manual audio control. The Canon FS series all have mic jacks - as does the Canon ZR900, ZR930 and ZR960. None have manual audio control. The Canon HV30/HV40 and Sony HDR-HC9 have a mic jack and manual audio control.

If you like the video quality of a particular camcorder and it has no mic jack, then you can capture the audio using an audio "field recorder" like those from Edirol, M-Audio, Zoom and many others... just import the audio when you import the video for editing - sync the audio and mute the audio that came in with the camcorder.

Where do you get a decent external microphone for a video camera?
Q. I'm just going to be making a cheap, low budget film and am looking for a decent external microphone for my Cannon HG10. I'll spend between $50 to around $200 but I'd rather it be like $150. Anyone got any ideas?

A. It depends what you want the mic to do.

For a "shotgun" mic: NRG Research SA-568. This switchable condenser mic has an XLR connector but comes with two cables - XLR to 1/8" and XLR to XLR.

For a stereo mic: Audio Technica AT 825 - using XLR jacks. There is an AT-822 that is basically the same mic, but with 1/8" jack. Audio Technica Pro24-CM is pretty good, too. If you go with the AT-825, you will need a XLR adapter. Check the juicedLink or BeachTek lines.

For a wireless lav: Audio Technica Wireless Pro88W VHF system.

The mono mics (the shotgun and wireless lav) will record to only one channel on the camcorder - fix this in post production.

What kind of camera and speed was used to film this rap video?

Q. I'm trying to find the exact specifications on replicating a video of this quality in 2012. What speed, lens, or camera would allow me to do this?

A. Hi Joelvan, and welcome to Yahoo!Answers:

This 1996 music video could have been made either with film cameras or video cameras. Several lenses were used (you can tell when the "fisheye" or wide-angle lens shots come in). Depending on the budget for the production crew, film would have probably been the most cost-effective medium for all the different locations used, considering what the cost of good camcorders was back then and the difficulty in finding changeable lens kits (although screw-on front fisheye adapters might have been used with a stock video camera lens).

The high-contrast black & white effect could have been done with film stock or with a B&W video effect. (Same thing can be done today with either a video camera setting or in the editing process.) The "gamma" of film can be altered or a grainy high-contrast look in video achieved to yield what you see in the final music video.

For a modern version of this production, shot in 4:3 screen ratio (not widescreen HD), you'd want a good miniDV, Betacam, or DVCAM tape-format camcorder with changeable lenses (or decent threadable front filter-mount fisheyes for those scenes). A standard 10x or 12x zoom lens would handle the other shots. I'd shoot either regular 30fps video on an older camcorder, or 24p or 30p on a newer camera that has changeable frame-rate settings. I'd also shoot in full-color, waiting until post production (editing) to subtract the color and alter the contrast.

hope this helps,

Can I connect an external mic to a camcorder without a mic jack but with a headphone jack?

Q. I have a camcorder that allows me to connect my headphones, but it has no mic jack, is it still possible to connect an external mic?

I have a AIPTEK p-HD(portable high definition) camcorder

A. A headphone socket is only for plugging headphones into and not a microphone. As said above you may be able to hard wire a microphone to the inside of your camcorder but you will need to know what you are doing and it will invalidate your warranty. Better get a camcorder with a mic socket.

How do I connect an external mic and monitor to a Panasonic Lumix GF2?
Q. I recently bought a Panasonic Lumix GF2 and I'd like to connect an external mic and monitor at the same time. I've heard you can buy hotshoe adapters. Are these universal? Is it possible to attach anything other than a flash through the hotshoe?

Any help much appreciated.

A. The Panasonic Lumix GF2 is designed to be a still image capture device. The highly compressed video capture capability is a "convenience feature" and not full featured like a decent camcorder.

There is no "audio-in" connection. There is no way to use an external mic connected to this camera and expect the mic to replace the built-in mic's capture capability. You can use an external audio recording device - field recorder - to record the audio. Then when the video is imported for editing in a computer, import that audio from the field recorder, synch, and mute the audio captured by the camera.

Hot shoe accessory shoes in still image cameras are generally used to trigger the flash so it lights the same time the shutter opens. There is no connection between the Lumix GF2's hot shoe and the audio subsystem of the Lumix GF2.

Some Sony and Canon camcorders (designed to capture video and audio) have proprietary hot shoe accessory mounts on their cameras. The allow connection of several things - including a camera-mounted mic designed to work specifically with that accessory shoe. This is not the case with the Lumix GF2. Can other things be attached using the accessory shoe mount? Yes - assuming the mount can work with the shoe. Many times, even though it is a hot shoe, mounted accessories have no connection into the shoe other than using it as a mounting point on the camera/camcorder.

"Hot Shoe adapters" are not universal - though many companies sometime use similar configurations. Generally, still image camera hot shoes will be similar - and video image recording device hot shoes used for different purposes are not shaped or sized like the still image hot shoes. Cold shoe accessory mounts are generally similar across the technologies...

how do i change the video format from avi to mov on the insignia camcorder?

Q. i need to change the default video file format from avi to mov because i have a mac. it's the Insignia NS-DV111080F camcorder. anyone know?

A. You can change the video format by following these steps: First, make sure that "Simple Mode" is turned off. Turn the Mode dial to the camera icon and press Menu. Select the File Format Icon (MOV) and press the center navigation control button. You may then highlight MOV or AVI. Since the camcorder has a touch screen, some selections can be made via that mode. More details can be found in the owner's manual, downloadable at the link below. I hope this helps.

What Camcorder works well with Sony Vegas 9?
Q. I want to buy a camcorder and I have Sony Vegas. So, can anyone tell me if they own a camcorder which its format works with Vegas 9? My old camcorders Video format didn't work with Vegas it only showed the audio when I dragged it onto the timeline.(I sold it so don't reply about how to fix the problem)

A. I use the Canon FS100 and it works great! It's also available for quite cheap now, around £140 in the UK- It exports it onto a .MOD format on an SD Card- and people often moan about the format saying you can't use it, but it works with Sony Vegas and can be easily converted for other software

It has good picture quality for the price, and it is possible to add an external mic too!

What camera should I use for solid HD video?

Q. Right now, I have a Sony a350 dSLR and a Sony SR-7 1080p camcorder.

I really don't take photos that often, but when I do they have to be good. Same goes for video, and right now, the little Sony is not doing the job.

I'm looking to get a video camera that does outstanding video, but doesn't leave me broke. I'm considering selling both of the cams I currently have and just using 1 that does both.

I'd rather not use AVCHD either... too hard to edit.

A. For "solid HD video" use of a video capture device that does not use a high compression to process/store and lots of light during capture are your best bets.

The Sony HDR-SR7 was one of the early AVCHD cams (2007, I think). Between the high compression AVCHD and smallish (37mm) lens filter diameter, I'm not too surprised that you are not happy with the results. In my opinion, a larger lens diameter and 3CCD or 3CMOS imaging chip will provide a vast improvement when coupled with lots of light and less compression.

Here's the problem: Low compression, high definition video, in a 3-chip camera with a large lens diameter starts at the prosumer Sony HDR-FX1000. HDV format onto miniDV tape or an external flash memory recording device (over firewire). $4,000.

Since we don't know what computer or editing application you are using, it is challenging to understand how we can get you to an easier editing place. AVCHD does not have to be difficult to edit if the video capture is done with tools designed to do the job.

If we bail from the HDR-FX1000 and stay in consumer grade, I do like the Canon HF S series. I don't know if that is still too much $. But assuming we can get an AVCHD-capable editor, it should be easier to edit + a larger lens diameter (58mm) than the SR7, decent sized single imaging chip and lower compression than the older AVCHD system...

Camcorders are designed to capture good video and audio. Their ability to take stills is a convenience feature. Cameras and dSLRs are designed to take stills. They can capture great video and audio - but there are challenges when dealing with this "convenience feature". I have not yet seen the single device that can do both well.

What camera would be best for shooting an independent film on a budget?

How can I get my old digital camcorder tapes onto dvd format?

Q. I have a JVC mini dv camcorder and I want to get my old movies onto dvds. How can I do this? Can I do this? Is there a cheap way for someone else(store) to do it for me?

A. Your camcorder should allow you to directly feed a VCR and there are things you can buy that can allow you to feed from the VCR to a computer, and even some that can compress the video to allow you to get more onto the DVD. I have been getting ready to do this, also. I bought a device a year ago but haven't had a chance to get set up to do it (and I think the thing got broken a few months ago and am not sure I can repair it myself).

Anyway, here's some links to a few websites that can tell you all about doing it yourself:

http://www.vhs2dvdwizard.com/convert_vhs_video_tapes_to_dvd.html?tid=ADW03Content

And here's one that will do it for you, for a fee, of course:

What is the best DVD Sony Camcorder to buy?
Q. I want to upgrade from my Hi-8 Sony camcorder. Which is the best to buy without being too expensive. I will use it to video my kids and family. Is there a way to put my
Hi-8 videos on DVD? Thank you for answering.

A. Here's a good website to learn about DVD camcorders:
http://www.camcorderinfo.com/d/Reviews&level_b=Camcorder&level_c=DVD.htm
You can look through the reviews and find the best DVD camcorder in your price range.

As far as converting Hi8 videos to DVD, here's a helpful guide:
http://www.digitalvideoclub.com/basics/tapetodvd.php
if you only need to do a straight transfer to DVD - without any editing on a computer - then you best option may be to use a stand-alone DVD recorder. For example: http://hometheater.about.com/cs/toppicks/tp/aatpdvdrecorder.htm

how do i know which camcorder has good image quality?

Q. how is the image quality measured? what should i look out for in the specifications to judge if the image quality is good on a particular camcorder (dv or mini dv types)

A. One word: 3 Chip. It means instead of combining color (which regular camcorders do), you combine light, giving the video a better picture. You would want to judge the pixels. Check out your local camera store for more info.

Do Hard Drive camcorders still have lower image quality than miniDV ones?
Q. All websites suggest that Hard drive camcorders provide lower image quality than miniDV because of their mpeg-2 compressed format. Is that still true, or is this something that has been fixed on the newer hard drive camcorders? Also is there a difference in this specific regard between the cheaper (~$600) hard drive camcorders and the more expensive ones today?

A. Yes, HDD camcorders still record in mpeg2 video format - at least for the standard definition (not HD).

mpeg2 is the same format as standard DVDs, so the video quality is not bad. If the miniDV videos are transferred to a DVD, you would have about the same quality as the video straight out of a HDD camcorder.

The major drawback with the HDD camcorders is that mpeg2 is not a good format for editing (i.e., compressed & interlaced)

What type of camcorder should I recommend for my work to purchase?

Q. We are looking for a camcorder that uses Mini-DV tapes. We would film indoors a lot so good low light quality is important. We are looking to spend less than $1500 but for the right camera could go up to $2000. We want good sound quality. I am not a pro so I wouldn't need a bunch of fancy controls, but some flexibility would be nice. What camera would you recommend us to purchase? Are there any that you have experience with that are terrible? Thanks!

A. Hello there,
the GS500 is rated pretty good for light situation and is a three ccd! Professional quailty made by panasonic.

You can go to camcorderinfo.com and look at the reviews. It was a little too pricey ($999) so I settled for a gs300

Would you buy a camcorder without image stabilization?
Q. I would like to but a DGX pocket size camcorder. They have good reviews but suggest you use a tri pod. How bad is the video without stabilization.

A. It would depend on how steady your hands are...also, any shaking is magnified at the higher zoom settings.

What camera do you think is used in this? camera quality?
Q. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m2EssAZslAY
This video camera quality is exactly the quality im looking for. I want it to be that good or better and I have a 1000 dollar budget..is there a camera similar to this or do you think you know which one it is? Thanks for letting me know!

A. I think it was HD camcorder, no Idea what make of camera or model, get on her channel and ask her. With everything I saw, I saw lots of everything I say below.

Consumer level HD camcorders have 3 problems. 1) Blurry, fuzzy, out of focus areas closely around people in videos taken by consumer level HD camcorders. 2) Any movement, even a wave or lifting an arm, while in front of a recording consumer level HD camcorder, results in screen ghosts and artifacts being left on the video track, following the movement. Makes for bad video, sports videos are unwatchable. 3) Mandatory maximum record times - 1 hour, 30 minutes, 8 minutes, 3 minutes - all times advertised as maximum record time for some consumer level HD camcorders. No event I have ever been to is that short. Either take multiple camcorders or pack up with out getting the end of the event on video.

With a MiniDV tape camcorder, record 60 or 90 minutes ( camcorder settings), 90 seconds or less to change a tape and record for 60 or 90 more and repeat till you run out of tapes.

You can get a Canon ZR960 for $250. It is a MiniDV tape camcorder, has a Mic jack. You need a firewire (IEEE1394) card ($25 to 30) for the computer and a firewire cable (less than 10) to be able to transfer video to your computer. To say this is not HD, think about this. It would cost in excess of $3500 to get a HD camcorder that could equal the video Quality of a $250 Canon MiniDV tape camcorder.

I really want to like Android but...?
Q. ..there are a few things holding me back and I wondered if there was a work around/fix for my gripes.

I owned a HTC Desire for a while after owning an iPhone 3g, I'm a big fan of iOS and still keeps my games on apps on a 2nd iPod touch, although it also leaves a lot to be desired. Apples vertically integrated controlled method works to an extent, but they are becoming far to perfectionist, limiting features until its done the Apple way. If only Android & Apple could have some drunken love child. Android has the features but as always with google products, if feels like it was some geeks side project still in beta (it usually is). Don't get me wrong, I use google products and services every day and love them (gmail, youtube, reader etc) but they seem to be less polished then iOS applications and software.

I'm currently eying a Windows series 7 phone, but I'm holding off til Nokia releases a flag ship model. They seem to have found a nice middle ground between iOS and Android (controlled to avoid fragmentation but not too controlled as to give the features their geek users want, apple seem to avoid this to keep the simplicity in mind and dumb it down for technophobes) but until Microsoft manage to catch up in the features and Apps area I need something to keep me busy. Microsoft already has the fluid OS and developer support behind it, and working with Nokia ensures hardware acceleration. I'm also geeking over their new iOS apps.

Getting to the point, my gripe with Android its app management, many users were using task killers to stop unwanted applications from running in the background, taking up cache and battery. The arrival of 2.2 froyo, provided better system management and automatically kills idle apps when the phone needs it. However I wish Android had a system closer to the Windows, which is what i hoped they were originally going for. Unlike iOS with app freezing and switching, android has "full multi-tasking" meaning apps can run fully as they would when using them but in the background which is great, but its seems like Google has set to provide official support to fight against start up programs. When i owned a HTC Desire and received the 2.2 update, I deleted the task manager, and let Android do its thing, yet through the day the phone would start to lag under the pressure, I checked to see what apps were running and apps like sky news, the weather, gmail and HTC's preinstalled apps were running automatically, i cleared the cache and closed the app, but again it would happen through the day, even when not using the app for days on end, it would still start up automatically. I wonder if google are going to improve on this and let the users disable the apps processes altogether, when closed it should stay closed, similar to Windows. On Windows i use an app called 'CCleaner' which does a bevy of tricks, but one of its most helpful tools is to see what startup processes begin when you first turn on your computer. Disable these improves windows significantly in load up time and useability. One of the main offenders of these by the way is Messenger, iTunes and Google updater.

I have a few other gripes with Android too but nothing significant that would hold me back from buying it (like skins, fragmentation and touch screen accuracy- noticeably better on iOS and WP7). Preferably I'll go for a Galaxy tab without the Galaxy (Stock android 4-5 inch bedside device)

What are your thoughts, do you know if Google will address this issue, it seems like Google opted for the independent management with android to help less techie users, yet anyone who owns a computer knows how to open and close apps, and doesn't expect them to open again when closed.

A. I have used this product and it performs really well

Motorola DROID 2 Global Android Phone, White (Verizon Wireless)

8 GB internal plus 8 GB preloaded microSD memory; Wireless-N Wi-Fi networking; Bluetooth stereo music; 5-megapixel camera/camcorder

Fuji doesn't really make any true camcorders, so normally this Question would be better posted over in the Y!A "Cameras" category. But at least this model FinePix has a decent zoom lens (18x optical) and shoots 720p HD video clips, in addition to 14Megapixel stills.

One step up from a basic "point & shoot" camera, this model is what is called a "bridge camera" (more features than just snapshot cameras, but not quite an SLR-style camera). The lens may have a long-zoom range compared to most cameras in its price class ($150-$200), but it's also not a very "fast" lens (wide-open it only has F3.1 to F5.6, depending on wide-angle or zoomed-in) so it's not very good in low-light situations. So if you shoot video with it (where the flash is useless) indoor results might be disappointing.

Fuji is a good brand name (they're the "Japanese Kodak" when it comes to camera film & processing) and like Kodak they've made cameras for years. They're just not one of the first brand names professionals and skilled amateurs think of when shopping for equipment.

CNet reviews gave this model 3-out-of-5 stars ("Good"), but pointed out the low-light and other shooting performance issues: see http://reviews.cnet.com/digital-cameras/fujifilm-finepix-s2950/4505-6501_7-34468871.html

Here's a Digital Photography Reviews article that's more of a copy of Fuji's press release than a review, but it covers all the features and specifications: http://www.dpreview.com/news/2011/1/5/fujifilms2950

Decide what kind of photos and videos are important to you, and if having a long lens isn't that important, you might search around for a better camera or camcorder in the same price range. But if you found that this model handles your style of shooting, and the price is right, go for it.

Just keep in mind that "cameras" are mainly designed for stills, and "camcorders" have features that make it easier for shooting videos.

hope this helps,
--Dennis C.

Do I need a wide angle lense for my prosumer camcorder?

Q. I am looking at prosumer camcorders from sony, canon, jvc, red, panasonic, and any other I can find.

Do some brands have wider angles then others?

To make movies and documentaries do you have to film in wide angle? I mean I will be doing it in HD and aren't all films and tv's formatted mainly to widescreen nowadays? Is wide angle the same as wide screen?

Do I need a wide angle lens or is stock wide enough?

A. Wide angle lenses and wide screen (16:9) aspect ratio are mutually exclusive.

If the camcorder's field of view does not capture enough of a space - and you cannot pull the camera back any more - then use of a wide angle lens can increase the camera's field of view. There is a building going up in my city. From across the street, the entire width of the building won't fit in my camera's field of view - by using a 0.7x wide angle lens add-on, nearly the entire width of the construction project fits so I can pretty much eliminate having to pan the camera. When you have a wider angle, the more distortion you will notice on the captured video. At the extreme, there are fisheye lenses commonly used for skateboard videos... These will be in the 0.3x or 0.4x range.

The opposite will be use of a tele-lens. I occasionaly use a 2x tele lens when the built-in optical zoom is not enough to zoom into what I want.

If you are capturing high definition video, that, by definition is widescreen. All that means is the aspect ration is 16:9 rather than the more square 4:3 or older standard definition televisions.

Whether you need/want a wide angle lense will depend on the shot you are trying to achieve.

Anyone no of a great professional camcorder?

Q. I am starting video production and am wondering what equiptment is the best to buy, at an affordable price. I guess I am wanting a professional camcorder at a budgeter's price.

A. Great question. Here are my top picks for the best professional camcorder. I have taken price into consideration. If you want HD:

1) Red Scarlet (coming soon, 2009) $3,000
2) Sony PMW-EX1 $6,000
3) JVC GY-HD200U $5,500
4) Panasonic AG-HVX200 $5,000
5) Canon XH-A1 $3,300

RED SCARLET: Many are skeptical about the Red Scarlet as it is a relatively unknown brand, but I believe it is the best professional camcorder under $10,000. No contest. With a traditional camcorder, like that made by Sony, Canon, etc, you'll be lucky if you get one that records in true HD. That is, most camcorders do NOT record in true 1920 x 1080 resolution, apart from the Sony PWM-EX1, as listed above. The Red Scarlet however, records footage in 3K, that is about 150% of the resolution of 1920 x 1080 HD. All that for $3,000. I don't know how well the Scarlet will perform when it is released in 2009 as far as color reproduction, cinematic look, audio capabilities, and manual controls, but I do know that it gives you better resolution than any camera I know of under $20,000. Therefore, the Red Scarlet is definately worth looking into. 3K footage for under $3K is a total steal!
______________
SONY PMW-EX1: It is a relatively new camcorder that records to tapeless media the SxS cards. The EX1 has better resolution that its Canon, Panasonic and JVC competitors, as the XDCAM cards do NOT compress nearly as much as HDV. Another huge advantage is that it has 3 CMOS chips that are 1/2" each, as opposed to 1/3" or smaller chips found on every other camera under $10,000. The larger image sensor gives your picture a much narrower depth of field, which is great for budding filmmakers, wanting that look of celluloid film. The only setback is that the EX1's media format, the SxS XDCAM media cards only record about 25 minutes of high quality footage on the supplied card, and purchasing additional cards is very expensive.
_______________
JVC HD200U
The HD200U is no Sony, Panasonic, or Canon, but it is an excellent camera nonetheless. Some pro reviews have said that the earlier model, the HD110U was the second best camera as far as picture quality in the prosumer level, next to the Canon XL-H1, which is $8,000. I really like the HD110 and HD200 as it is the only prosumer HD camera, apart from the XL-H1 with interchangeable lenses, rather than a built in lens. The only problem is that the HD200U does not record HD in 1080p or 1080i, but instead, it only has a lower-resolution 720p mode. To me, this isn't all that bad, as I prefer 720p at 60fps over 1080p at 30fps; it blurs much less, but you'll have to make the decision. Numerous independant films have been shot on the JVC HD110 and HD200, so its an excellent camera!

_______________
Panasonic HVX200: The HVX200 is a great inexpensive choice for the indie filmmaker. It has excellent picture quality and an excellent 24p mode. Another huge upside is that it records to both HDV OR P2 cards, so its really convenient. However, it does not have quite as good picture quality as the Sony EX1, nor does it have interchangeable lenses like the JVC HD200. It's an excellent, well-rounded HD camera nonetheless. I found it works excellent with the Redrock M2 35mm adapters though.
____________
Canon XH-A1: The XH-A1 is rated as one of the best cameras out there for its combination of quality and value for your money. I agree. It's a nice, well rounded camera; relatively easy to use (compared to the others at least) and is packed with loads of features, making it an excellent value. My only problem is that it does not have a 720p mode. It also lacks a real 24p mode, and instead has what Canon calls a 24f mode. According to Canon, the 2 are identical, but I really don't know.

For standard definition, which is still a great option, as HD is still new and expensive:
1) Panasonic AG-DVX100B $2,500
2) Canon XL2 $3,000
3) Sony DSR-PD170 $2,500

I really can't decide whether I like the DVX100B or the XL2 better. I'm leaning towads the DVX100B as a better overall camera (and its very user friendly), but then again, the XL2 has interchangeable lenses. Both can record in 24p, which is a great option. The PD170 is a total low-light wonder, is easy to use, but does not have a 24p mode.

If this is still not what you had in mind for a budget, here are some decent consumer HD cameras:
1) Sony HDR-HC3 and HDR-HC9
2) Canon HV20 and HV30

both are HDV. I highly recommend it. I can't stand mini DVD or flash media. HDV is also considerably better than Hard Disk camera; they don't compress your footage quite as much.

Hope that helps, and I apologize if that's still not what you had in mind. Well good luck, and have fun!!!

I'm looking for a cheap professional camcorder Any ideas?
Q. I'm lookin at getting the Sony Hdr-FX1.I've heard alot of good reviews about it.Does anyone have any other advice or any other suggestions.
Well I'm actually looking for something smaller more as of hand held. Like the Sony Hvr-fx1 or the canon xl2

A. I would second the answer about the JVC GYHD110..or Gy-HD111e that we have in Europe. Not only will you shoot good quailty HD but it also shoots some of the best SD DV I've ever seen. I have two of them here as well as Canon Xl1s and XL2. However, the bang for buck goes to JVC. There's a much longer learning curve to the JVC for the novice over the Canon but it's worth it. The JVC certainly is a better buy than the Sony and I tested both of them extensively before committing to the JVC. HD will always be a problem with low light on any HD cam. The thing about the JVC because it shoots in 720p 25 (EU) is that you'll need to use it like a film camera with your speed of pans etc. There's also the old question of cool too..which is not a consideration in my case. If you put the Sony and JVC on the street, people will be more likely to get out of your shot with the JVC as it's bigger and looks more professional. However if you're going in to film in anywhere that's sensitive to publicity with the JVC you're more likely to be asked for a press pass. Whereas with the Sony you could claim it's a hobby camera maybe. If you do learn to drive the JVC it will stand you in good stead if you end up in the higher end of broadcast cameras later.
I hope this helps
Best of luck

What is the best HD camcorder for about 100 dollars?

Q. Has to be HD atleast 720p/60fps or 1080p/30fps. Has to less than 120 dollars. I considered DXG125v, but its 720p/30fps... a bit blurry. Oh yeah has to use sd card.
Yes they are available.

A. No such thing for even $200.

What is the least expensive digital video camera out there that has slow motion?
Q. y'know ..like one that you can capture 60 and 90fps - legit! Consumer or not ..doesn't have to be HD. Thank you.

A. Technically speaking, I believe JVC has the win here, with qualifications. Quite a few of their consumer DV camcorders, such as the GR-DF450 ($299.95 at B&H) have what they call "Live Slow" mode. This mode apparently cuts resolution for a boost in frame rate... I haven't found too many details on it. It does allow real time sound recroding at the same time.

Sony introduced a somewhat similar function in their HDR-HC3 e... it will capture 240 fields in 3 seconds to buffer memory, then write it out to tape at the normal 29.97fps. This is not full quality, and there's no sound. See here:
http://www.camcorderinfo.com/content/The-Quality-of-Sony-HC3-Slow-Motion-Video.htm

This mode also exists in Sony's current line, including the HDR-HC5 and HDR-HC7 HDV cameras, the HDR-SR5,7,8 HDD camcorders, and the HDR-CX7K flash-based camcorder. See review here:
http://www.camcorderinfo.com/content/Sony-HDR-HC7-Camcorder-Review.htm

For any extended filming at a higher frame rate, you might look at the Panasonic HVX200. When recording to P2 cards, it can run at frame rates from 12 to 60fps. This is in 720p mode, so it's HD-ish. Some of the recent models in the JVC ProHD line also support 60p recording, though not the full "varicam" range of speeds.

What do you think about the Nintendo 3DS?
Q. Hey Everyone,
In your opinion, what do you guys think about the new Nintendo 3DS? If you own one, what do you like and don't like about it?Also, can you download free games or music onto it? Please feel free to share your thoughts nicely. An early Thanks and a Happy New Year to Everyone!
If you can download free games or music, what is the website? Thanks for all the answers people! Greatly Appreciated! Happy New Year!

A. I own a 3DS and I have loaded music on it for free, and listen to music (even with the system close).

I love my 3DS

You can LOWER the VOLUME of 3D

You can also turn the 3D OFF Completely

And 3D is good for working out your eye muscles & brain to keep them in shape as shown in this link:

http://www.aoa.org/x17309.xml

The Nintendo 3DS has downloadable 3D Music videos from today's American music artist which I have already downloaded the 3 free 3D Music Videos to watch anywhere and the 3DS has 3D "Blue Man Group" video and College Humor (in 3D) with the FREE "Nintendo Video" App that you can download (but its 4 3D Videos at a time and they replace them once in a while) and you can download cheap downloadable 3D Apps & 3D games costing from 99 cents to $5.99 and the Nintendo 3DS also has FREE downloadable 3D Apps & 3D Games, which I have already downloaded 3 Free 3D Apps and I have downloaded 2 Free 3D Games and the 3DS has a 3D Camera and I have already used the 3DS 3D Camera to take 3D photos and I have uploaded some of my 3D footage online using the Nintendo 3DS's Web Browser to upload my 3D footage online and I have used my 3DS Web Browser to also download other peoples 3D footage from the Internet on my 3DS Web Browser and I have view all sorts of 3D content on 3D Websites online on my 3DS's Web Browser and I have use my 3DS 3D Camera to play 3D Augmented Reality games as well and it's all in 3D without the Glasses using the 3DS 3D Camera and It has beautiful 3D HD graphics that equal to that of a 3D HD version of Wii Graphics and I have Streamed 3D Videos Online on my 3DS in the eShop and I have also Watch 3D Trailers for upcoming 3D movies coming to Theaters in 3D and I have done all of this in 3D Without the Glasses

The 3DS with a Wi-Fi Update can RECORD 3D Videos in 60 fps (unlike other camcorders, that only Record in 2D Only and in up to 30 fps only)

So you can pay $169 for a Nintendo 3DS and buy the greatest Games ever & all in 3D Without the Glasses like Cave Story 3D & Kid Icarus & Super Mario 3D Land & Mario Kart 7 using the MOTION SENSORS to play the game like if you were turning a real steering wheel to turn the Kart left & right and also play such other 8 GB 3D Games like TheatRhytem Final Fantasy & Kingdom Hearts 3D & Metal Gear Solid: Snake Eater 3D & Crush 3D and Shinobi & Animal Crossing & Rodea the Sky Soldier & Michael Jackson: the Experience 3D & Ridge Racer 3D & Super Street Fighter 4 3D & Monster Hunter 4 & Golden Sun 4 & Star Fox 3D & Zelda 3D & Sonic Generations 3D & Tetris 3D & Resident Evil: Revelations & Tales of the Abyss 3D & Tekken 3D which also has the 3D Movie Tekken the Movie 3D in it to watch and also play other 8 GB 3D HD games as Spider Man 3D and 100% of the 3DS games are in HD 3D Without the Glasses

And the 3DS pixel density is MUCH sharper than an average HD TV

They're making Angry Birds 3D as a downloadable game

And the 3DS has DLC (Downloadable Content) like Xbox Live for a bunch of 3DS games to add content to the game later on for Free

1 of the Free 3D Apps I have downloaded was Netflix

And Netflix is getting 3D Movies in the next few months, so for $169 you can watch 3D movies on the free Netflix App on the 3DS in 3D Without the Glasses

And 100% of the people who have said that they get headaches from 3D, have said that after up to 1 week of using the 3DS they NO LONGER get headaches anymore and that they now play with the 3D all the way up 100% all the time, non-stop

But I have never had any problem with the 3D at all, but each person has a different experience with the 3D ON during the first week

You can now pay to download 3D Videos on the 3DS

The 3DS is getting Hulu Plus before the end of this year (2011) as a Free downloadable App and Hulu already has 3D Content

and you can check this Link below for more 3DS Games:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Nintendo_3DS_games

P.S. You will want to check these sites out for the Web Browser's 3D ability:

http://www.3ds-screenshot.com/

http://gamecrunch.co/3dscreens/

http://3dporch.com/

http://3dspaint.com/

http://www.klutz.com/static/nintendo/n3ds_mm9.html

http://www.instructables.com/3ds/

And there are such great cheap downloadable games from the eShop as:

Sakura Samurai: Art of the Sword

Dillon's Rolling Western

Pushmo

Pyramids

And here are the 2D Resolutions:

Wii = 640

3DS = 800

And here are the Motion Sensors:

Wii = 1 Axis

3DS = 3 Axis

And here are the Frame Rates (Frames Per Second):

Everything else = 30 fps

3DS = 60 fps

And here are the Wireless:

iPad 2 = 1.9 GHz

3DS = 2.4 GHz

And here are the Audio's:

Everything else = up to 5.1 Surround Sound

3DS = 7.1 Surround

And the 3DS has way more better graphics than the iPad 2 & Wii as shown in this Link Here:

Differences in camcorders, lighting used in TV vs films vs personal home videos?

Q. What are the different types of camcorders called? Are there different types? The lighting, zooms look totally different in TV, films, and personal home videos. What other differences are there? How do you create home videos that look like films or even tv shows. Also, how can you capture photos and shoot videos that look professional like tv or films? I don't know anything about photography and filming.

A. Go to Sony.com and look under their professional equipment (cameras, etc.)
Professional cameras cost thousands of dollars - they have higher resolution.
Cinematography is also something you can go and study in school.
Studios use also a lot of post-production equipment to add special effects, clean the colors, editing, etc.

I want to buy a camcorder. Should I buy a Hard Disk Carmcorder or DVD camcorder?Video quality is top priority?
Q. I am planning to buy a camcorder for personal use. If i buy a Hard Disk Camcorder and transfer the video to DVD, will it differ in quality when compared to Video that is directly recorded to DVD in a DVD camcorder. Also, throw some light on the maintenance issues.

A. HDD (Hard Disk Drive) camcorders and DVD camcorders both record to MPEG2 format, so the video quality sure be about the same.

What Would be a Good Camcorder for me at Walmart or any Other Place?

Q. My ideal camcorder would have great motion processing and good image stabilization. I plan on recording breakdancing, freerunning, tricking, and skateboarding so I would need those to be a necessity in the camcorder.
HD and good resolution would also be good.
Price I would like is to be around 200$ or lower. Not sure if this is actually feasible at a normal consumer market, but if it there's a camera even similar I would like to know please.

A. Getting a HD camcorder is taking a step backward in Video Quality. HD camcorders Interpolate the video, which means of every 25 frames of video, 4 or 5 frames are taken by the lens assembly, the other frames in between these are filled in by the camcorder inner circuitry, thus giving you not true video. HD camcorders interpolate the video, which means of every 25 frames of video, 4 or 5 frames are taken by the lens assembly; the other frames in between these are filled in by the camcorder inner circuitry, thus giving you not true video. It looks like this -one frame from the lens assembly, 7or 8 from the electronic circuitry, one frame from the lens assembly, 7or 8 from the electronic circuitry, one frame from the lens assembly, 7or 8 from the electronic circuitry, one frame from the lens assembly, 7or 8 from the electronic circuitry, from front to back of the video. Near impossible to edit, even when you have the Multi processor computer with the big Graphics and sound cards that is required to edit, view, watch and work with the files a HD camcorder produces.

Consumer level HD camcorders have 4 problems. 3) These Consumer level HD camcorders all have a habit of the transferred to computer files are something you need to convert, thus losing your HD quality, to work with your editing software. 4) Mandatory maximum record times - 1 hour, 30 minutes, 8 minutes, 3 minutes four different times advertised as maximum record time for some consumer level HD camcorders. No event I have ever been to is that short. Either take multiple camcorders or pack up with out getting the end of the event on video.

MiniDV is currently the most popular format for consumer digital camcorders. MiniDV camcorders are typically more affordable than their HDD and DVD counterparts. Each MiniDV tape will typically hold an hour of footage at normal recording speed and quality. MiniDV tapes are available for purchase at not only electronic and camera stores, but also at drugs stores and grocery stores, making them easy to find while your on vacation. There are literally hundreds of MiniDV camcorders available; both in standard and high-definition. And add the fact that to get a HD camcorder that could produce better video quality footage, one would have to spend in excess of $3500 for that camcorder that could produce higher quality video.

I am looking for an HD Camcorder with a 1080p resolution and at least 50x optical zoom?
Q. I am looking for an HD Camcorder with a 1080p resolution and at least 50x optical zoom, any suggestions please and can you tell me also the price ranges of a camcorder with these specs?
Thanks.
@ Nihal: not more than 650 euro its about 900$

@ Iridflare: Now I have the SONY DCR-SX40 and it has 60x zoom and 720p resolution and I am really enjoying this great zoom but the quality of the video still poor if we compared to a 1080p resolution camera.

@ Dana Bash: the Canon HF S10 is a Good camera but it has only10x O.Z.

@ Andrew: LoL I will think of it.

Well, exluding the 50x optical zoom option, can you tell me what is the 1080p resolution camcorder with the highest optical zoom now on market?
I am thinking of the JVC enverio GZ-HD300 and it has a 20x O.Z .

A. Off the top of my head I can't think of any HD camcorders like that. Can you explain why you need at least 50x optical zoom, please? Very high zooms like that are almost unusable - if you've got a specific need, there may be another way to deal with it.

Q. i cant upload anything to imovie 09. when i pree the upload button the built in i sight camera comes out but not the cam. what is the problem

A. Use another fire wire to check if it is the problem of your fire wire.and after the camcorder comes out ,you can not import it to your imovie .just convert the .mts,.mod or other hd files to .mp4 ,.mov using this good tool, which i strongly recommend.! ^_^

A. I suggest Canon FS200 Flash Memory Camcorder with 37x Optical Zoom.
Price: $299.00
Technical Details
Record video directly to a removable SDHC memory card
Genuine Canon lens with 41x Advanced Zoom, 37x optical zoom and 2000x digital zoom

What pro camcorder can I buy cheap and build up into a higher quality one?

Q. A professional camcorder that I can change up the lense, filter and whatever, on as I get more money. A camera I can eventually get an okay quality with for fictional motion pictures. Advice?

A. Hi Janie:

From your Y!A Profile, you are in the 19- to 21-year age category, so your funds might be somewhat limited, but at least you have a good idea for trying to stretch your initial purchase budget.

Also, I see you are in Sweden, which historically has been a PAL-TV format country, so you might avoid NTSC-only camera models. And rather than try to keep up with Krona and Euro exchange rates, I'll keep my monetary discussions in Dollars.

As far as "true camcorders" which have a higher tariff rate in Europe than Digital SLRs (like the Nikon D-series, the Canon EOS line, or the Sony Alphas) you will find not find many changeable lens models for less than the $2000-$5000 USD price range. (The really good changeable lens video cameras tend to run in the $12,000-$50,000 USD range.)

Having a wide range of interchangeable or upgradeable lenses is one of the appeals of the Digital SLRs (dSLR) that have "movie modes". Plus, the camera bodies are in the hundreds rather than thousands of dollars price range. One downside is the lack of professional audio features, since these are designed primarily as still photo cameras, not movie-making camcorders.

If you care to update your Question with "Additional Details" giving us a more-specific price budget ("cheap" is a very relative term, especially to a young adult) then specific brand and model recommendations can be made.

To stretch your budget money, I'd recommend looking at used-equipment rather than new, when starting out.

hope this helps,
--Dennis C.

Are cameras allowed at said concert?

Q. On Jan 31st I plan to go see my very first Linkin Park concert here in PA, I want to take my HD camcorder with me so I can record the whole event. I swore I saw a camera in use in their 2011 Announcement video on youtube. So, I just want to know for sure if cameras are indeed allowed at said event. Also, could I get a run down of everything that is / isn't typically permitted so I know what I can and cannot bring? Thnaks.

A. Usually you can have a camera but you can't use it. There will probably be an announcement before the show begins "Flash photography and video or audio recording of tonights performance is prohibited." Of course, many people ignore the warning and get away with it.

What camcorder should I buy?
Q. I have a pretty good idea about what I need but I'm not sure which model to choose yet. Here are some of my specifications:
-$300 budget
-2011 model
-Good for amateur films and low light recording
With those in mind can someone recommend a camcorder to me?

A. Have a look at JVC Everio GZ-HM200 Dual SD High-Def Camcorder
# Dual SD card slot for dual memory continuous recording
# 1920x1080 Full HD recording
# 20x optical zoom with Konica Minolta HD lens
# Laser-touch operation with sub-trigger and zoom; one-touch upload to YouTube

In a area with much more squirrels then rabbits would a squirrel call work better for predators?

Q. For the second time this week I just witnessed a gray fox eating a squirrel and it was the coolest thing ever because I was able to watch from my kitchen. For the longest time I have been trying to get some good video of them for my youtube channel (channels partnered so its like a fun job) and I think now would be the best time due to the fact I have seen 4 red foxes and 2 or more gray foxes along with one lone coyote in just two weeks alone and thats a all time high. Anyway just a month or two ago I had probably about 30 squirrels eating corn from the food pile I put out and no rabbits. I have only seen like 20 rabbits in all of 2012. So wouldnt a squirrel call be better or do squirrels not make squeels?
Dan I know you probably know 100 times more then me but in only a 100 acre area wouldnt only one call be better then a whole wounded bird/rodent party? Sounds pretty suspicous to animals I bet.

A. Andrew:

All predators know the sound of an injured rabbit. All predators know the sound of an injured squirrel. In fact, the sound of just about ANY injured critter in the wild gets the attention of fox and coyotes, as well as any other critter that prefers a diet of meat. However, keep in mind that squirrels often retreat to the trees where the four-legged varmints can't get to them. Only the hawks and owls. All though the raptors make great video subjects, most predator hunters do not want them coming to the call. "IF" you invest in a quality calling system such as Fox Pro or one of a half a dozen other good brands of electronic callers, you can also equip yourself with a good variety of prerecorded calls on disc, tape, or memory card besides the sounds of injured rabbit and squirrel. I have three different electronics which offer me a selection that includes distress calls of fawn deer, cub bears, fox & coyote pups, bobcat/lynx kittens, woodpecker, wood rat, crows/ravens, waterfowl, two kinds of rabbits, etc. Even with all of that and more to choose from and three QUALITY electronics systems to choose from and play those sounds as well, I STILL carry my reed call because over the 40+ years I have hunted the predators, I have learned how to make it work, and work well. It talks a language that EVERY predator I would ever hunt FULLY understands. "RABBIT!" Just remember that with the animals that close to you, you do NOT want to over-blow or over-work the call. Also remember a VERY important point that a LOT of beginning callers don't often think about. Rabbits have a LOT smaller lungs than you do. Keep your calls down to shorter bursts and runs. Don't make L-O-N-G and drawn out calls or series of calls. If the varmints are as close to your neighborhood as you say, you should have them in your lap within minutes. If you haven't seen them within 15 minutes up to a half hour, max, either you've done something wrong and they've seen you or heard something about your call they didn't like, OR they just aren't there. This is one of those times when practice really does make perfect. But do NOT practice outside with the fox and coyotes. They learn quicker than we do and the smarter they get from our mistakes, the harder they will be to coax in to your call, regardless of WHAT kind of call you use. Good luck. (IMPORTANT TIP: Keep the battery for your camcorder FULLY charged. Remember they do not work as well or as long in COLD weather. It's even a good idea sometimes to carry the battery in your warm pocket until you are ready to use it. It's ALWAYS good to carry an extra fully charged spare or two.)

ANDREW: You don't EVER play them all as in your so-called "rodent party". You have a remote option to choose ONLY the call or two that best fits the occasion. In your case, I'd place my remote speaker about 40 or 50 yards away from where I set up the camera and then use the remote selector and volume control to pied-piper one in. At most, I have NEVER used more than three calls at any one session. I might start with the jackrabbit fairly loud and then go to a quiter version of the cottontail rabbit and finish up with the final coaxing call of a mouse or wood rat squeaking. It works. It's not rocket science here, just common sense and logic. And when you use the good quality products rather than a cellphone, trust me on this, the predators RARELY think it "sounds pretty suspicious". And that's something you CAN bet on.

I need a Mac compatible HD video camera and somewhat cheap editing software?

Q. I've been looking around (with not too much luck) to find a pretty nice HD camcorder and video editing software for the Mac. I'm trying to find the camera for under $400, and the software nothing too fancy but I'd like green-screen compatibility. Anyone have any tips? It would mean a lot!

A. If you're looking for cheap video editing software, you may try this one. it can help you convert DVD and edit video, my friends recommend it to me, it works pretty good.

Suggestions for a simple Mac compatible video camera?
Q. I have a MacBook and a PC but want to use the Mac for video. I need something reliable and simple!

A. What is your budget?

Any camcorder can connect to any computer - but some need a cable, others need software to convert video.

Any MiniDV tape camcorder connects to almost any Mac made in the last ten years or so using a 4-pin to 6-pin firewire cable. (The only exception is the MacBook Air - it has no firewire port). DV format video requires no change. HDV requires the Apple Intermediate Codec to be installed (this is a custom install using the Mac's system discs - it is a QuickTime component).

Any hard drive or flash memory connects using USB, but you need to convert the video using StreamClip.

High def hard drive or flash memory consumer camcorders compress into AVCHD. Only the most current iMovieHD or FinalCut can deal with AVCHD encoded video - and the Mac needs to have an Intel CPU.

DVD based camcorders are not worth wasting money on - and barely make decent doorstops.

Which camcorder is good for filming soccer games?

Q. I want to film my brothers soccer games and training so I wanted to buy a camcorder.
My budget is pretty low so nothing fancy.
My friend is selling Samsung HMX-F80BP, and I want to know can this one record soccer/football games. I would use tripod and just go left right left right with occasional zooming.

I also thought about Canon vixia m30 or r30 but those are a bit over budget so I probably will reconsider them in a few months.

A. HD Camcorders and DSLR Cameras interpolate the video, which means of every 25 frames of video, 4 or 5 frames are taken by the lens assembly; the other frames in between these are filled in by the camcorder inner circuitry, thus giving you not true video. Near impossible to edit, even when you have the Multi port processor computer with the big 1GB Graphics card and a Sound card that is required to edit, view, watch and work with the files these camcorders produce.

What should I look for in a camcorder for filmmaking?
Q. I'm kinda knew to this, I'm a student filmmaker and am look to buy my first camcorder. My budget isn't too high, under 1,000. I can definately pay 500 but anything higher than 750 is probably pushing it. I just want to know what are somethings i should look for in buying a camcorder. Also, I will be editing these on a PC using Windows Movie Maker.

A. Mic jack. Manual audio control.

Canon HV40 (if your computer has a firewire port) or HF S100 (if your computer has no firewireport).

And get Sony Vegas. It can deal with either the HDV or MTS files from the above camcorders. MovieMaker cannot.

You will also want a tripod (don't go cheap - you never want to shoot handheld). The Sunpak 7500TM is an OK consumer-grade tripod.

Invest in an optional high capacity battery or two from the camcorder manufacturer. And a case (Pelican 1500) and maybe a video light (Dot Line DV-60) and camera bracket (Bescor VB-50) and a shotgun mic (NRG Research SA-568).

I want to get camcorder to Make a Portfolio of film work?

Q. So I want build a portfolio for UCA ( Uni for creative Art) And i want to get a good HD Camera where i can plug into computer or whatever so i can edit it using my editing software , so have you got any suggestions

A. You can consider buying Canon VIXIA HF S200 Flash Memory Camcorder - 2010 MODEL
Pros of the Canon VIXIA H S21/20/200 camcorders vs. the HDC-TM700:
- Sound quality seems a tad better, but not much
- 3" touch screen is much larger and has much, much higher resolution
- Menu structure is better
- Still image capability is significantly better
- Video gain functionis flat out excellent and can effectively be used to increase low light sensitivity, while reducing image noise drastically
- Two SDHC card slots
- Flash is more powerful
- Has a built in video light, even though it's meek
- Hot shoe layout is much better than Panasonic, but it's a Canon proprietary design, so you can only use Canon accesories
- The standard battery is not very large (last about 80-90 minutes) quite tricky to eject, especially when you have wet or sweaty hands. It doesn't come right out when you release the lock and is hard to pull out.
- The hand loop is very chintzy and permanently mounted to the camera body (cannot be replaced if it wears out). It is not big enough for larger hands and constantly a bother.

What is the best camera to buy a film student?
Q. I need to get a gift and i really have no clue what to buy my son. My budget is 1000 USD and the camera has to perform the best in its class at low light situations.

A. A film student? movies or photos? I think you should ask more before you shell out the bucks.

How about an DSLR that shoots HD video? That seems what some are doing.

Is there a video app on the iphone that has high quality video and sound?

Q. I need an app with high quality video and sound because the video recorder on the iphone sucks.

A. There is no app available that can be downloaded and change the hardware in your phone, because that is what it has to do to improve either the video or audio qualities of your phone. If you want better video quality, use a camcorder, not a damn phone to shoot videos.

is there an app or program to make an iphone 3g not 3gs shoot video and not just pictures?
Q. also is there anyway to zoom with the camera. I just got the iphone and its totally new to me. I love it so far but I was suprised it didn't do video. Now i kinda wish i spent a little more and got the 3gs but o well. thanks for any help!

A. There are no apps out there to turn a basic camera into a camcorder... Its hardware updates that make this possible...

You can try replaycam.. it will take several pictures in a row that will kind of look like a video. Best I could find for the Iphone 3G.
