How can I watch my 8mm tapes if my camcorder is broken?

Q. I have a Sony 8mm (Not hi8 or digital8) camcorder and tons of 8mm tapes I recorded several years ago. I was wondering if there was some type of playback device offered when you can't use the broken recorder. I would like to do this without having to buy another recorder since I just want to play them to record them onto DVD.

A. There are only 2 options for you.

Convert the tapes to dvd / vcd using a professional.
Caution: the clarity will not be good. Actually worse if you watch on a HD TV.

Buy a dazzle or similar device which connects to
a computer. You can connect your camcorder video out to
this device and record all your tapes to a DVD/ CD.
Any computer with a video capture card can also do this.
I copied all my tapes to a usb disk as a backup using a
older version of dazzle usb adapter.

Thanks.

What is the best 8mm camcorder that I should buy?
Q. I am looking for an 8mm camcorder as I have a really hard time finding them. I have looked in many shops for an 8mm camcorder, but it seems like no one has an 8mm camcorder.

I believe the net is the best place for me to be looking for an 8mm camcorder and I know that a lot of people in here are experts in finding this kind of stuff.

So where can I find an 8mm camcorder that is just awesome and which one would you recommend?

Thanks

A. I would go for the Sony CCD-TR818 (check link below). My friend who is a camcorder lover always talks about this one, and I believe he also has it.

From the reviews I have read about it, it is supposed to be great. Great quality, very easy to use and simply everything you need in an 8mm camcorder. Good Luck!!

ANSWERS, what is the best camcorder for snowboarding, READ BELOW?
Q. I want to get an HD camcorder for under $600 or a consumer non HD camcorder for under $400, I want to get a camcorder that has awesome clarity to shoot sponsor videos, and is a Flash Memory or MiniDV better for snowboarding and to make DVDs. Thanks

A. after working in the film industry for almost 3 years and shooting snowboard/ski videos for local mountains like echo mountain, and copper mountain, here is what i have to say.

HD is not a easy rout to go. HD is a very unforgiving environment. First off, you need an HD camcorder. Those run about 1000 dollars averagely. You would also need a video editing program that supports editing in HD. Sony vegas is a common program but that runs you 500 bucks. You also need a ton of ram and a good graphics card that can process the HD video while editing. In the end you need an HD dvd burner that can burn your HD footage. If you fall short of one of these things the video in the end will not come out in true HD but will be brought down to normal SD quality. If you have the money and tools to shoot, edit, and play in HD then go for it!

I would go for miniDV any day. flash memory can only store a little data and the quality is not as supurb as mini dv

In my opinion i shot my first snowboard video on a panasonic pvgs 320. Its a great camcorder that has 3ccd's and has the best picture for a camera under 400 dollars. I currently own it and love it. If you don't want that camcorder then get something that is 3ccd. It will be making the people that watch it go WOW! 3ccd gives you supurb color and I highly reccomend it.

check out my youtube listed below. I have my first snowboard video on there and the quality may seem bitter (because its on youtube) but trust me the quality is the best for the price you pay.

also please check out my tutorial on my youtube below that shows you how to build a steadicam. that will let you ride behing your buddies and get spectacular footage thats SUPER STABLE. also invest in a wide angle for close up shots near the jumps and rails.

What are the differences between a camcorder and a professional video camera?

Q. Are there huge differences in the video quality you can get from a HD consumer camcorder and a little "professional" cameras...the type videographers and local news stations use on location. What are the other main differences in capability?

A. Consumer camcorders have small lenses and small imaging chip(s). This combination results in their not doing too well in low-light situations. Prosumer and pro-grade camcorders have much larger lenses and larger imaging chips.

Consumer camcorders' manual controls are generally not easily accessible. Prosumer and pro-grade camcorders have easily accessible manual zoom, manual focus, manual iris/exposure, manual shutter and manual audio controls... and neutral density filters and video gain control.

Many consumer camcorders generally do not have any mic jack or other audio-in capability other than the built-in mics. A few have a 1/8" (3.5mm) stereo mic jack (but generally no manual audio control). Prosumer models generally have a 1/8" (3.5mm) stereo mic jack with manual audio control. Pro-grade camcorders have built-in XLR audio connectors.

Consumer camcorders are generally built to be used hand-held, even though no one should ever do that. Prosumer models are larger - and while designed to be hand held, rarely are; the large ENG (Electronic News Gathering) pro models are nearly always shoulder mountable. The advantage of the shoulder mount translates into a much steadier shot - though a tripod or camera crane or other steadying device would be steadier than shoulder mount.

Other features like frame rate, interlaced vs progressive frame capture, add-on lens selection and quality, LANC (a wired remote) jack availability, matte box availability, filter selection, will also come into play.

You will also find that the vast majority of the pro camcorders use miniDV tape or save to an external hard drive that stores in DV or HDV format (same as miniDV tape). Panasonic has a few new internal hard drive or flash memory pro-grade camcorders. Red has a family of them. Sony, Canon and JVC pro lines continue to be on the DV/HDV page.

In good daylight, tripod mounted, no movement of the subject or the camera, with normal audio levels, it would be a challenge to differentiate 1080i/p 30fps video. Deviate from this, and the differences get very obvious, very quickly. Video is captured under lots of different lighting conditions, there may not be time to set up a tripod, and audio levels can be from 0 to REALLY LOUD in an instant... and the reason we capture video is for the motion...

Under many conditions, the ENG camcorder audio is not even used even though it is captured - an external field recorder (Edirol, Zoom, Marantz, M-Audio, Fostex) is used to capture the audio you end up hearing on TV and a separate audio person is employed just to be sure the audio is correctly captured.

So yes, there are huge differences - which is why a low-end consumer camcorder costs less than $300 and a decent pro camcorder can be as low as $3,000 or as high as $60,000...

But a skilled person with a low-end camcorder will always capture much better video than a non-skilled person with the most expensive camcorder...

What is the best camcorder to get for a college class?
Q. What would you think is on eof the best camcoders for a college class and what is the best camcorder for college that is $1000 just incase i can't get the best.

and do colleges mine if i have or will get those small HD camcorders or do they just want you to have the big professional ones

A. Ask the person teaching the class.

The camera is part of the equation - you will need a rechargeable hi-cap battery or two, a good tripod (fluid-head is best), a sturdy case (I use Pelican), a shotgun mic, a clip on wireless mic or two - depending on the camera you get, you may need a BeachTek XLR adapter (or something similar), a shock mount for the shotgun mic (Sabra SMM-1 universal shockmount), boom-pole.

I suggest miniDV tape - and your instructor will confirm that, too.

My suggestions:

Sony DCR-HC96 plus http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/479976-REG/Sony_VMCK100_VMC_K100_Microphone_Adapter_Cable.html so you aren't stuck using Sony mics.

Panasonic PV-GS500 (if you can find one).

Both are standard def camcorders.

An affordable, High Speed Camcorder/Camera that can shoot over 100 Frames per second?

Q. Wondering if anyone knows of an affordable, High Speed Camcorder/Camera that can shoot over 100 Frames per second? I need it for a school project. Possibly where you can rent one?

A. Unfortunately, most 100FPS camcorders aren't for the common hobbyists nor their pockets. You might want to check out

what is the best type of camcorder/camera?
Q. I might be going to San Diego this summer, and I am looking for a camcorder/camera that could take pics and take video. Waterproof would be the best, but if it isn't that would be fine. I am looking for a very high mega pixel camcorder. Thank you! =^P

A. Hi there

First video is never measured in Mega pixles, that for stills always in resolution.

You do not give a bidget, so its a problem, there is no point in telling you about a $500 camera if you only want to spend 100.

How waterproof enough to take it swimming? most of them are 3m (10ft)

there are a few here

http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_noss?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=waterproof+camcorders&x=0&y=0

You will probably want HD which will give you the higher resolution, most will record to a flash card, so if you fill the card up you can simply down load it to a laptop, or get another card.

Most of these cameras will take stills, as well, but they will not be as good as a dedicated stills camera.

It will give you an idea of wahts about

How do i effectively film myself singing and playing the guitar while maintaining sound quality?

Q. I have a camera/camcorder, a microphone, an amplifier, and an acoustic guitar.
I want to create a youtube video of me playing and singing but the sound quality is horrific if i just film it straight off the camera/camcorder.
I'm not expecting great things, as i dont have expensive equipment and dont plan on getting any, but the tinny/echoing guitar sound is unbearable.

A. Something I would suggest is maybe getting a desk mic stand that will be able to hold the mic close to your mouth, but will be able to still hear the guitar. The ideal way to record the guitar and have your voice over it is to do them separately. You can use a recording program like Pro Tools, Studio One, or even Garageband to at first record just the guitar, and after sing along with the guitar track while recording your voice. This is what I always do.

Why does the Nintendo 3DS camcorder have poor sound quality?
Q. I've been wanting to know this for so long. The videos I record on my 3DS have poor sound quality. It's the same for my little sister's 3DS too. Why? On my iPod touch there is better picture and sound quality.

A. because your trying to record sound/video with a handheld gaming platform. its like trying to get decent quality video with a nokia 5 years ago.

besides, its a 3ds, please tell me how you enjoy your 4 fps max framerate when you turn on 3d mode.

how to transfer the videos from my canon digital video camcorder MVX10i to my mac?

Q. Hi i have a old digital video camcorder thats like 10 years old but i wonder how to transfer the videos form it to the mac. Its a MVX10i and connected with the cord and to the mac and nothing happend. i want to transfer every single video cassette to the mac and i have like 20 of them it have alot on import an stuffs in it so please help

A. The Canon MVX10i is a standard definition video, consumer grade, camcorder that records low compression, high quality video to miniDV tape.

Link to the manual:
http://files.canon-europe.com/files/soft24435/Manual/MVX10i_CUG_EN.pdf
This is the English version.

It behaves like any other miniDV tape based camcorder (with one exception form JVC that I will not address here).

Camcorder OFF. Connect a firewire cable (not USB) to the camcorder's DV port (not USB) and the Mac's firewire port (not USB). There was no firewire cable in the box with the camcorder. You did not tell us which "cord" you connected to your Mac - but if it was the USB cable that was in the box, that will allow transfer of stills from the camcorder's flash memory only. It will not transfer video from the digital tape. You *must* use a firewire cable.

See page 9 for the location of the camcorder's DV port. DV, firewire, IEEE1394 and i.Link are all the same thing. They are not USB and are not interchangeable with USB. USB-to-firewire cable/converter/adapter things will not work.

The camcorder's DV port is a 4-pin firewire connector. We do not know which Mac you are using. Older Macs all had a 6-Pin firewire port. More recent Macs either have no firewire port (MacBook Air, some versions of MacBook) or a 9-pin firewire port ... and most new Macs have a Thunderbolt port that will need a Thunderbolt-to-firewire adapter tail/cable from Apple (about $40) that provides a 9-pin firewire port. So... without knowing which Mac you have we don't know if you need a 4-pin to 6-pin firewire cable or 4-pin to 9-pin firewire cable.

Assuming you correctly connect the camcorder's DV port to the Mac's firewire port, and the Mac is on, *now* you can turn on the camcorder and put it into "Play (VCR)" mode. See the power/mode switch on page 10 of the manual. LOCK the video (there is a small tab on the back of the tape - it should be "open" to be locked). Rewind the video in the camcorder.

Launch iMovie. It will been in the Dock or in the Applications folder of the Mac. Name the file and set the destination of the video files for storage. Under File, select Import or Capture and the video should start importing.

ALERT: If the miniDV tapes are full, that is 60 minutes of video. This 60 minutes of imported video will consume about 14 gig of computer hard drive space when imported to iMovie. 14 gig x 20 tapes = 280 gig of computer hard drive space. We don't know how much available space there is on your Mac's hard drive. Consider using an external drive (connected using USB) for the videoeidinting project file storage.

How will my life change after having a second baby?
Q. My first born is one year old. We want to have another baby by the time she is three. I'm just curious about specific things that might change once we have our second child. (Life situations, Daily routines, motherly expectations.) Please feel free to share your experiences. Thanks!

A. I nannied two boys 2.5 years apart, and now I have twins.

I don't find 2 kids to be very difficult. It is easier IMO if they are closer in ages, since they can do the same things at some point.

2 kids fit into a standard car, there are lots of double strollers out there.

The worst ages for nannying were when they were 1 and 3. The 3 year old had no self control, and the 1 year old was mobile so would go up to the 3 year old.

By 2 and 4 the preschooler had more self control, and the 2 year old could defend himself. It isn't that you want them to bite etc. but it is useful when trying to keep your big brother from beating up on you! Of course I broke up most fights, but that encourages the older one to start things when you are not looking. Once the younger one can defend himself and chomps down on the older one a couple times the older one learns to respect him, even when the caregivers back is turned.

Also by 2 and 4 it was in many ways easier to have both of them, since they played together. I could watch them play, instead of being the sole playmate.

I prefer 2, so was REALLY glad I had twins. :D My guys are 9 months old and already play peek-a-boo on their own with each other, while I sit back and catch it all on camcorder.

They fight sometimes already to, but as much as possible I try to let them work it out themselves. At least they are equally matched!

Most of my experience is with 2 of course, but I find 2 is better than 1, except for that 1 and 3 stage. That's a bad one. Helpless baby who is mobile and menacing sometimes jealous toddler.

It was nice when I had the 1 year old to myself, when the 3 year old was in preschool, but by age 2 it was really nicer to have both boys together. The important thing IMO is to make sure they love each other. There are things you can do to help that along, and avoid rivalry, and that will make your whole family a lot more pleasant. I would think about getting a book or two on how to get siblings to get along. My brother and I fought like cats and dogs, and maybe if my parents had helped us with it we could have gotten along better. We were 6 years apart though, which can be a lost cause for siblings!

I'm a big fan of early scheduling and routines, so would definitely consider that with a second baby. It would help your first a lot know what to expect when, and help the new baby sleep longer earlier.

What's a good camcorder for an amateur filmmaker?

Q. Ok, so I'm almost a sophomore at a college prep school, and i'm looking for a low-medium quality camcorder. My budget is at most $1,500. Slightly over is fine, but that doesn't mean $1,750 is! For the camera i need the ability to:
- plug in an external mic
- shoot in HD
- mount onto a tripod
- shoot in a mac-friendly video format
Thanks for your help!

A. wow thts a lot of money i just use the iphone if you have one has really great video quality and u can put it on a tripod

What's the best camcorder for independent horror movie?
Q. I'm interested in film making, and I want to create a horror movie and send it out to film festivals. I already created a script and have the actors, however the camcorder I have isn't entry level. I'm only 16, so money is an issue. I have about $800 for a new camcorder that would be good in low light situations and film in HD. What would be a good camcorder for my budget?

A. Before you decide on which camcorder - or we make suggestions - we need to know if that $800 budget includes mics, lighting, cables, power, tripods or other steadying devices, computer upgrade for video editing, editing application and a few other things.

If the $800 is for the camcorder only because the other items are already budgeted elsewhere, then get the largest lens diameter and imaging chip you can afford. Most likely in the Canon HF M series.

If the $800 is for the camcorder plus everything else, then you really need to save more.

The *best* camcorders with good low light behavior are those with LARGE lens diameter (70mm or larger) PLUS large imaging chip (3CCD or 3CMOS). The closest I can get you is the Sony HDR-FX1000 which is about 3x more than your budget.

If you can't increase your camcorder budget, then learn to shoot "day for night".
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4MaC44MU4iw
This way you will not need a camcorder that has to be good in low light conditions... YOU control the lighting, don't let the camcorder control you.

What professional camcorder would you recommend?

Q. I make ski movie shorts but this year I am making my first full length film. I have a pretty expensive consumer camcorder but I was not satisfied with its performance this past season. I need something professional, cheap, durable, fairly light weight, and easy to operate. I know I will have to compromise on some of these things - but do you have any suggestions?

A. What is your budget?

What are you planning to edit with and on?

"Cheap" is a relative term and means different things to different people.

Why weren't you satisfied with what you are using? It is difficult to know what issues we are trying to resolve.

Professional grade - to me - means:
Lens diameter: 72mm or larger
Imaging chip size: 1/4" or larger
XLR audio connectors
Lots of easy to reach manual controls (audio, zoom, focus, aperture, white balance, etc.) on the outside of the camcorder - not buried in the menu.

Prosumers (all of the above, but 1/8" audio in jack, not XLR):
Standard definition: Canon GL2
High Definition: Sony HDR-FX7, HDR-FX1000

Pro grade (meets all the above requirements):
Standard definition: Panasonic AG-DVX100, Canon XL2
High Definition: Sony HVR-Z1U, HVR-Z5U, HVR-Z7U (then they jump to the more expensive XDCAM and HDCAM families), Canon XH and XLH series, Panasonic AG-HVX200, HVX205, JVC GY-HM series.

All are larger than consumer-grade cameras - but all have fully automatic or fully manual settings - and variations in between.

Whats the difference from Prosumer and Consumer?
Q. From what i understand an HD camera has better quality than a non HD. But somehow a prosumer camera without HD quality is worth more than non HD consumer camera.
What makes the prosumer camera worth it?
For the purposes of making a professional DVD to sell that includes medical rehabilitation exercises what type of camera would be best? (for as cheap as possible)
These exercises are things like a doctor moving around someones head with their hands indoors, not like jumping around exercise.

A. Consumer camcorders have small lenses and small imaging chips. Mostly, they do not have an audio in jack (some do), and if they do have a mic in jack it is 1/8" (3.5mm) stereo only. Manual controls are difficult to get to - if they are available... and there is typically no manual audio control.

Prosumers start with manual audio control, have an audio in (stereo) 1/8" mic jack... Some even use XLR connectors for audio-in... and can have larger lenses and bigger imaging chips (allows for better low-light capture characteristics). Manual controls are easier to get to and use.

Pro grade have big lenses, big imaging chips, everything can be manual or auto (audio, zoom, exposure/iris, shutter, focus, etc) XLR audio connectors and 1/8" mic-in...

Typical high-end consumer: Canon HV20, HV30, Sony HDR-HC7, HDR-HC9

Typical prosumer standard definition: Canon GL2, Sony DCR-VX2100, Panasonic DVX100B

Typical prosumer or low-end pro high definition: Canon XHA1, Sony HDR-A1U, HDR-FX1, HDR-FX7,

Typical end pro-grade: Panasonic HVX200, Sony HVR-V1U, HVR-Z1U...

There are others, but this is a place to start.

For what you say you want to do, I would stay in the "Typical prosumer or low-end pro high definition" category. This is because theses camcorders can shoot in standard definition and high definition...

The camera is only part of the equation - tripod, crane, mics, lighting, makeup, wardrobe, editing, experience... there is lots more that goes into making pro-grade video... but the first step is to start with decent equipment.

What is a good camera to use for youtube?

Q. I want a high definition camcorder like the one macbarbie07 and ilikeweylie use.... I just don't know what kind to buy, PLEASE HELP! winner gets 10 pts.

A. Canon PowerShot A1300 16.0 MP Digital Camera with 5x Digital Image Stabilized Zoom 28mm Wide-Angle Lens with 720p HD Video Recording Great camera for the price. Purchased the camera in May 2012 to shoot family events, friends ect. You could not ask for a better price vs performance camera. Very simple to use, excellent picture and video quality. I would suggest getting a cushioned camera case that includes the USB thumb drive reader for $10, the case is perfect for travel and storage when not in use. The USB reader is a great option when offloading the memory card.

What kind of camera and speed was used to film this rap video?

A. Hi Joelvan, and welcome to Yahoo!Answers:

This 1996 music video could have been made either with film cameras or video cameras. Several lenses were used (you can tell when the "fisheye" or wide-angle lens shots come in). Depending on the budget for the production crew, film would have probably been the most cost-effective medium for all the different locations used, considering what the cost of good camcorders was back then and the difficulty in finding changeable lens kits (although screw-on front fisheye adapters might have been used with a stock video camera lens).

The high-contrast black & white effect could have been done with film stock or with a B&W video effect. (Same thing can be done today with either a video camera setting or in the editing process.) The "gamma" of film can be altered or a grainy high-contrast look in video achieved to yield what you see in the final music video.

For a modern version of this production, shot in 4:3 screen ratio (not widescreen HD), you'd want a good miniDV, Betacam, or DVCAM tape-format camcorder with changeable lenses (or decent threadable front filter-mount fisheyes for those scenes). A standard 10x or 12x zoom lens would handle the other shots. I'd shoot either regular 30fps video on an older camcorder, or 24p or 30p on a newer camera that has changeable frame-rate settings. I'd also shoot in full-color, waiting until post production (editing) to subtract the color and alter the contrast.

hope this helps,
--Dennis C.

what is the best mic to record loud music?

Q. hello friends; i have a sony hdr-sr11 i am thinking in buying external mic to record loud live music but i am not sure what mic to buy i have been looking for RODE VideoMic DVC; SONY ECM-MSD1; SONY ECM-HST1; which would you recommend? thanks for your answers.

A. Any of the mics will work OK for normal audio levels. I am not familiar with that camera enough to know if you can adjust audio input levels (probably not). If so, you are all set. If not, you will be disappointed because the camera will try to adjust levels automatically and it is NOT designed for loud music. You will get badly distorted sound.

Video pros always have a way to adjust the audio levels - pro cameras have that feature built in. Consumer cameras do not.

It will be a bit of a pain, but the best way to do this is to connect the microphone to a camcorder "XLR audio interface". This device allows you to adjust the mic level down so that it does not distort the camera input. You will need to buy a mic that has an XLR output. The mics you are looking at I think connect directly to the camera - you don't want that. Here is one reasonably priced audio interface that is designed for what you want to do:

http://www.markertek.com/SearchProduct.asp?item=DXA%2D6A&off=2&sort=prod&skuonly=0&search=DXA%2D6&pagesize=20

You can then connect any good pro XLR microphone to you camera.

What kinda of video camera should I buy?
Q. I am somewhat on a budget, but I will pay for quality. I am mainly wanting it to record live music in bars, so I want something that can handle that much noise clearly.

This part is not necessary but I'm going on a canoe trip soon, so if there is one I can take down the river too, that would be awesome. But I don't want to sacrifice video/sound quality just for that.

A. Live music = loud = camera or camcorder needs some sort of audio gain control. I would also expect that these would be night scenes - or poor indoor lighting. Hopefully, there is stage lighting for the performers.

Canoe trip = waterproof. Generally, there are housings available for waterproofing, so I think the long-pole is the audio control.

Step 1: Set a budget.

At the low end, there's the GoPro Hero or something from the Canon HF R line. With the GoPro's using an external digital audio recorder like a Zoom H1 and synching audio when editing the video. With the proper camcorder like the Canon HF R series, then use the "attenuator" mic setting for loud audio and a waterproof "bag". The camera is not expected to deep in the water, so an expensive deep-water housing is not needed. I think the Ewa Marine VLA would fit most of the Canon HF series camcorders. Sony has its line of underwater housings for Sony camcorders so any of the HDR-series cams can work for both your needs... Another angle is the Zoom Q3HD and not use it while canoeing (but after landing).

What are the legistics of creating a camera that is able to shoot high definition video in a 4:3 aspect ratio?

Q. I understand that 16:9 is becoming the preferred aspect ratio, but for a lot of people who film action sports, like myself, 4:3 is a much better option because you can get a lot closer to the subject without removing parts of their body from frame. I am experienced in what I do, so I don't want people to suggest me lenses and so forth. I really just want to know how possible it is because there is a market for it, albeit small, and I am very willing to put money into a project if its likely to succeed.

A. High definition video is defined as 16:9 aspect ratio.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HDV

You do have a couple of options:

1) Since most TVs and monitors being sold today are widescreen, just tape-off the LCD panel on the camcorder when recording. Id you are using the viewfinder-eyepiece, it gets a little more challenging - but if you use the camera's grid option and learn where the 4:3 aspect ratio is relative to the grid, that should help keep your 4:3 framing in the right place.

2) When editing, you can always crop the video and to a 4:3 aspect ratio. The decent video editors will allow that cropping without "squeezing" the video. When you render, the 720 or 1080 horizontal line count remains - and playback will have black bars on the left and right side of the video window.

There is standard definition 4:3 and 16:9 aspect ratio; there is no defined high definition 4:3 aspect ratio...

What is the best camcorder for live streaming?
Q. I am going to be live streaming local sporting events on my website and need to know which camera is the best to handle that? Also any advice on the best streaming site or software to use for it would be greatly appreciated.

A. The Sony HDR-AX2000 Handycam camcorderhas been amazing. The picture quality is outstanding, the 20x zoom is really nice to have and the tapeless format comes in handy. I use Premiere Pro for editing and haven't had any problems with file sizes or any file related troubles. Using a your own shotgun microphone will greatly enhance the audio for your projects. It shoots pretty good in low light also. Not bad for this price range.

How can I connect my Sony camcorder to my mac computer?

Q. When I connect my Sony Dcr-Trv11 camcorder to my mac via firewire, the mac does not recognize it. I have an imac osx tiger and imovie. I have found places online that say that this is possible, but I have had no luck yet. does anyone have any suggestions? thanks

A. The Sony DCR-TRV11 camcorder is miniDV tape based.

What are you expecing the Mac to do? Nothing will automatically "pop up".

Connecting a 4-pin to 6-pin firewire cable to the camcorder's DV port and the Mac's firewire port - with the camcorder in "Play" or "VCR" mode, launch iMovie,
Name the project,
select the video project destination folder,
select DV (presuming you captured the video in 4:3 standard definition mode - select DV widescreen if the video was captured in that mode.
Create.
The iMovie Import screen should appear.

You did not tell us which Mac. It is possible that the Firewire port is inactive. System Preferences: Network: Port Status. Be sure there is a check mark in the firewire box.

It is also possble that the firewire cable or the camcordeer's firewire port is bad.

How to connect Panasonic 3CCD camcorder to Apple power book to download the recorded movies?
Q. I've connected the camcorder to the Mac using the USB port, but I am unable to access the camera. I tried using iMovie to no success. When I was using a PC I was able to access the camera and transfer the movies. I was hoping to be able to do the same with the Apple. The main reason I purchased the Mac was for the ease of editing and creating DVDs.

Any help would be much appreciated.

A. you must install a mac driver for your camera if you opt to use the usb port. if you cannot find a driver, you will need to use the firewire port.

Where can i get a flip ultra hd camcorder for a low price?

Q. I am looking for a FLIP ULTRA HD camcorder for under $100. It does not matter if its a store or website. If a website, there needs to be a return policy. Thanks :).

A. Check out Amazon.com I have seen some on there for 30-50 dollars cheaper.

What is a good camcorder for under 150 dollars?
Q. PLEASE READ: I want to start making call of duty videos and uploading them to youtube, i was thinking about getting a polarnoid HD camcorder for like 60 or 70 dollars. it got a 4/5 stars on target.com. also please keep in mind that ill be having my camcorder up to the TV while recording my videos, so just giving you an idea of what kinda camcorder i need.

A. Get a Canon Ixus camera instead. It is slightly more expensive that that but it takes surprisingly good HD videos. I have an Ixus 100 and the videos it takes are much better than a Sony camcorder from 5 years ago.

how do i get a clean smooth video for streaming and youtube?

Q. i noticed some peoples videos are clean picture but whenever the camera moves the picture skips and gives me a headache. what kind of camcorders should i avoid? or what features should i look for to have a smooth video?

A. I use a Digital Camcorder for my video projects(Palmcorder)..
I use DV-tape..which creates a DV-file..
My computer will upload the camcorder footage--creating a DV-avi File..
I remain in DV-avi for all the editing--once my movie is nice and smooth..
I look to make Upload Files..
YouTube..gets a 720p File..
If I'm to make a DVD-video,,I'll render the DV-avi File..for MPEG-2 and Dolby-Digital audio..
===
Always use DV-avi(AVI)..un-compressed..Large Frame..video files--for editing..
..trying to edit a wmv/wma file can be a "jerky" process..
..1080p is a very good wmv/wma file.but I still remain in DV-avi(AVI)..
That would be my Master Video File..
I also use Roxio Creator 2010..as a back-up application..for upload files..
===
Next would be HD Video..
Your computer would need..a PCIe Video Card..to create HD-video..
..or you will see horizontal lines in the video file--especially with action scenes..
Like a basketball game..lines will appear..
===
Jerky Video--is attempting to edit--compressed video files like wmv/wma..
..its also a sign of hurrying..
There is no hurrying the video editing process..
Also..
Always use the Pause Button--before advancing your video footage..useing the slider switch.

How do you link a camcorder to a TV?
Q. I play Skyrim a lot and wanted to start a channel on YouTube to help people out. But I don't want to record my TV. I've noticed how people can actually record what's ON their TV, not the TV itself. Can I actually hook up my video camera to the TV to accomplish something like this?
It would also help if you recommend a good camera for this. I have a feeling mine won't be that good... (^-^")
It would also help if you recommend a good camera for this. I have a feeling mine won't be that good... (^-^")

Want a camcorder that records to DVD as well as transfers video easily to computer - what do you suggest?

Q. I'm going travelling and want to send video diaries home using DVD, but I also do a lot of video blogging, and want a camcorder which is easy to transfer video to the computer for editing. I've looked around and can't find one, so what do you suggest?

A. DO NOT BUY A DVD BASED CAMCORDER.
The video they capture (into VOB files) is highly compressed. The discs are a pain and the video quality for editing is terrible.

Best video quality continnues to be from miniDV tape based camcorders. Canon ZR800, ZR950, Panasonic PV-GS320, Sony DCR-HC29, HC96. You will need a Firewire400 port on your computer and a firewire cable - Firewire, i.Link and IEEE1394a are all the same thing.

If you have to, a hard drive based camcorder will do, but they are more expensive - and their video is not as good as miniDV tape - but the video transfer uses USB.

Check what the pros use - NONE use DVD camcorders. Nearly all use MiniDV Tape. You don't have to be a pro to use similar tools.

what camcorder should I buy for a trip?
Q. I'm going to Greece in oct. I need either a camera or camcorder that is easy & light. I've never owned anything but, a 35 mm . I want one that is easy to send pictures to family, will take still photos, low light, maybe, under 1,000 under 500 better.

A. To meet your requirements, we highly recommend a single chip CCD camcorder from Sony with miniDV, a long optical zoom, optical stabilization, and that is lightweight and compact.

Most consumer HD camcorders will fit your needs such as the compact Sony HDR-HC9 6MP MiniDV High Definition Handycam Camcorder + Deluxe Accessory Kit http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0015CTI9G?ie=UTF8&tag=motionpicturecentral-20&linkCode=as2&camp=1789&creative=9325&creativeASIN=B0015CTI9G , but it might have problems in low light. If you want to get very good quality, we recommend a professional camcorder such as the Sony HDR-FX7 3-CMOS Sensor HDV High-Definition Handycam Camcorder with 20x Optical Zoom http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000IBDWNS?ie=UTF8&tag=motionpicturecentral-20&linkCode=as2&camp=1789&creative=9325&creativeASIN=B000IBDWN - again, it might have some problems in low light - depending upon the conditions. You can look around and find it for $1,000.

A single ship CCD is recommended over CMOS in low light. CMOS can sometimes have difficulty in low light because it was designed for use in studios. CCD has excellent low light ability and single chip systems from Sony usually include an infrared IR beam emitter for use in low light or no light - as seen on ghost hunting and sport animal hunting shows.
- To make all this happen, CCD will need more electronic and power, so the CCD camera will definitely be heavier than a CMOS version (but not more than 2-4 lbs). You will want to consider high capacity batteries - explained farther below

There are many grand vistas and large buildings in Greece, so you will definitely need a long optical zoom with optical stabilization. Canon seems to be the leader in this department, but Sony is not far behind. Depending upon your camcorder, you may also want to consider an additional wide angle lens or telephoto lens to capture your subject in tight or extreme long distance situations - explained later

*** The most important consideration will be a camera that is as lightweight and compact as possible to allow you to operate with one hand without causing arm fatigue. You want a camera that will not be a hinderance and prevent you from taking it everywhere. The added advantage to a camcorder of these specs is that it is it very easy to store in your luggage, carry everywhere you go, and fit in a bag when entering places you are not allowed to film or photograph or do not want to record.

We recommend miniDV over DVD, hard drive, or flash memory.
- MiniDV is found everywhere and all over the world at economical prices. We use Panasonic AYDVM63PQ 63/42 Minute Professional Quality Mini-DV Digital Tape, 10 Pack http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000ANCZ50?ie=UTF8&tag=motionpicturecentral-20&linkCode=as2&camp=1789&creative=9325&creativeASIN=B000ANCZ50 - twice the quality and half the price of consumer brands you find at Wal-Mart. Also, miniDV can be used in both standard definition miniDV cameras as well as HDV. Tapes normally come in 60 minute lengths, but you can also find 30 and 80 minute tapes.
- Flash Memory camcorders come in two versions: internal and external. Internal operate exactly like hard drive camcorders except they have no moving parts and are extremely lightweight and compact. External models are usually the lightest of all; however, You will need to purchase SDHC memory cards similar to Delkin 16 GB Secure Digital High Capacity (SDHC) Class 6 Memory Card http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001400C9O?ie=UTF8&tag=motionpicturecentral-20&linkCode=as2&camp=1789&creative=9325&creativeASIN=B001400C9O . Smaller and more economical version of these memory cards are available, but you will need to carry a lot of cards - at least 80-100gb worth of cards which are easy to carry and jut as easy to lose.
- Hard Drives don't require anything, so you never have to carry or search for a tape, DVD, or memory card. That is until you fill up the hard drive, and then you must find a DVD burner or computer. If you purchase a hard drive camcorder, you might have to pack your laptop too - more weight, more hassle, and more time spent babysitting the camcorder instead of enjoying your trip. If you use this, you probably want to get a model with at least 80-100gb
- MiniDVD comes in two versions now - the older standard definition and the newer high definition Blueray (Blu-Ray or BD) - which required a specific BR DVD player or connection of the camera to the TV to view. Both are usually the most expensive option of all, but you get what you pay for. The older SD version is currently the only media that allows you to take what you recorded out of the camcorder and view it on almost every DVD player instantly after recording. There is no editing when doing this, so everything comes over - bad takes and all. Be sure to use DVD-R or DVD-RW if you choose this option, and it may be hard to find or afford discs that record more than 30 minutes at a time

* Having said all that, there are a few things you should know. This may affect your decision.
- All current Bu-Ray miniDVD, hard drive, and flash memory save the video to a format called AVCHD and sometimes H.264 or MP4. AVCHD, MP4, and H.264 can record in different compression rates, but you can't always adjust this in your camcorder. You might end up with a highly compressed video that is not as great as the image in your memories.
- Standard Definition miniDVD uses the same compression as regular DVD. You will be recording memories in an older format, but it is guaranteed to work (at a high cost per miniDVD)
- MiniDV uses similar compression to normal DVD, but you must use a deck or the camcorder to play its video to your TV. You may feel tied down, but you can always store and re-use MiniDV a well as use it in the newer HDV camcorders.

If you truly want to go with hard drive or DVD, we highly recommend these models:
- Hitachi DZ-BD7HAF BluRay 5.3MP DVD Hybrid High Definition Camcorder with 30GB Hard Drive and 10x Optical Zoom http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00159JV46?ie=UTF8&tag=motionpicturecentral-20&linkCode=as2&camp=1789&creative=9325&creativeASIN=B00159JV46
- Hitachi DZ-BD7HA BluRay 5.3MP DVD Hybrid High Definition Camcorder with 30GB Hard Drive & 10x Optical Zoom http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000UWN0VE?ie=UTF8&tag=motionpicturecentral-20&linkCode=as2&camp=1789&creative=9325&creativeASIN=B000UWN0VE
- 8GB HDD/DVD Hybrid Camcorder with 25x Optical Zoom and 2.7" Wide LCD http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000O8QJV2?ie=UTF8&tag=motionpicturecentral-20&linkCode=as2&camp=1789&creative=9325&creativeASIN=B000O8QJV2
- DZHS500A DVD-HDD Hybrid Camcorder Kit, DZHS500AKI, Standard Camcorders http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001A38V5C?ie=UTF8&tag=motionpicturecentral-20&linkCode=as2&camp=1789&creative=9325&creativeASIN=B001A38V5C
- These are all hybrid camcorders that contain Both a miniDVD system AND a hard drive. The first two models would be our first choice and are High Definition models with Blueray DVD. The second two are the older standard miniDVD systems.
- The best practice for your situation would be to save to hard drive. Once the hard drive fills up, you can dump the video to DVD. After that, you can continue filming. If you are caught in a situation where your hard drive is filled and you need to continue filming, you can pop in DVD after DVD.

* All of current camcorders, regardless of media format, can be hooked to your computer via firewire for capturing video, editing, and publishing to DVD, Ipod, or the internet to share with others.

** Once you go through all this and choose a camcorder, you will also need to consider:
- a couple of large capacity batteries - for filming as long as possible before returning the hotel room
- a camcorder bag - if you do not want to transport your camcorder and accessories in your purse or luggage.
- an external mic system http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00006HO3R?ie=UTF8&tag=motionpicturecentral-20&linkCode=as2&camp=1789&creative=9325&creativeASIN=B00006HO3R - if you plan to record yourself or a friend while talking from a great distance or on the move
- a telephoto lens or wide angle lens - you will need to know the model number of your camera, mm size of the lens, and if there is threading on your lens for screw on lenses or not. Most HD camcorders come threaded.
- a flexible tripod http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000EVSLRO?ie=UTF8&tag=motionpicturecentral-20&linkCode=as2&camp=1789&creative=9325&creativeASIN=B000EVSLRO - for holding you camera in different places without the need or a large tripod or a friend. many models are available. be sure it will hold the weight of your camera (weight is usually listed on the box and manual with the camera)
- a small cleaning kit with a brush and lens cloth - you can use the same one for digital cameras
- a video light http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0000CEVP6?ie=UTF8&tag=motionpicturecentral-20&linkCode=as2&camp=1789&creative=9325&creativeASIN=B0000CEVP6
- a light bracket for a camcoder that does not have a hot shoe http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000NL5X5S?ie=UTF8&tag=motionpicturecentral-20&linkCode=as2&camp=1789&creative=9325&creativeASIN=B000NL5X5S

Now that you are armed, shop around. We did not provide a lot of specific answers because there are a multitude of combinations that may work for your needs and tastes. For example, if you want the top of the line Hitachi hybrid camcorder, it is at the $1,000 end of your price range, and you will still have to spend money for the expensive DVDs and other accessories.

One last thing, camcorders don't take photos as well a digital cameras, and the opposite is true. Most digital cameras take excellent photos, but only take VGA video at 640x480 - lower than standard definition resolution. Sellers will often try to confuse you by saying they have a 16 megapixel (mp) camcor

Where can you finance a professional camcorder?

Q. I am in the market to upgrade to a high-end camcorder (specifically the Canon XH-A1), but can't afford it's $3500 price tag at the moment. I could, however, easily pay for that over 12 or 15 months. Are there any shops which offer high end camcorders but provide no interest financing?

A. try to consult BH below about ur concern...
and also check out the reviews

What should I look for in a camcorder for filmmaking?
Q. I'm kinda knew to this, I'm a student filmmaker and am look to buy my first camcorder. My budget isn't too high, under 1,000. I can definately pay 500 but anything higher than 750 is probably pushing it. I just want to know what are somethings i should look for in buying a camcorder. Also, I will be editing these on a PC using Windows Movie Maker.

A. Mic jack. Manual audio control.

Canon HV40 (if your computer has a firewire port) or HF S100 (if your computer has no firewireport).

And get Sony Vegas. It can deal with either the HDV or MTS files from the above camcorders. MovieMaker cannot.

You will also want a tripod (don't go cheap - you never want to shoot handheld). The Sunpak 7500TM is an OK consumer-grade tripod.

Invest in an optional high capacity battery or two from the camcorder manufacturer. And a case (Pelican 1500) and maybe a video light (Dot Line DV-60) and camera bracket (Bescor VB-50) and a shotgun mic (NRG Research SA-568).

Is the Canon XA10 HD Professional Camcorder good for film making?

Q. I'm starting out so this would be my first camcorder I have ever used.

A. Hi "Bittercold":

Since you already asked twice last month about miniDV camcorders, I won't repeat any of the other Y!A pros' advice on that subject. I will, however, point you back to fellow Contributor "L's" Answer to you regarding the AVCHD format issues that the Canon XA10 records all its files in: http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=AmxPdh4o1WYVv83bjYM0h6Xsy6IX;_ylv=3?qid=20120324030021AAL8XNH

If you are interested in "filmmaking", then you are going to have to plan for editing, and AVCHD's lossy compression codec isn't the best for frame-accurate edits.

If you've never done any camcorder shooting at all, you might be better served starting out with something used from a good camera store or pawn shop, and making sure some of your budget money goes into the extra RAM & fast hard drives (among other things) that editing HD footage will require. Try a $250-$500 test run, before you go spending almost 2-grand.

Feel free to update us with what kind of stuff you plan to shoot, for better feedback. It makes a difference:

When I get hired by Coach Schuman or one of the other Yahoo!Sports' "Rivals 100" coaches to videotape a football event, they expect me to bring a miniDV format camcorder, not a flash-card AVCHD or H.264 unit, no matter how expensive. And small-is-good with run & gun sports shooting, so I use a Canon ZR-series or Panasonic GS-80 (both under $700), rather than my $3000 Sony Z1U. We shoot everything in 4:3 Standard Def, since that's what the editor, the other coaches, and all the other shooters work in. And the low-compression DV codecs make for good action footage and easy edits.

The Canon XA10 has pro-audio features, good Canon glass optics, dual SD slots, etc., but I can't say if it's the best deal for you.

hope this helps,
--Dennis C.

I want to buy a camcorder that is compatible with mac?
Q. I just had my son and want to record a whole bunch of stuff, but dont have a camera. I am researching what is the best bang for the buck and making sure it is compatible with mac. someone told me jvc wasnt. and that cannon was the best, but its expensive. Sonny and panasonic are in my price range of under 500. I want one with a hard drive.

A. Pretty much all camcorders are compatible with all computers - but some need different tools - hardware and software...

Since you didn't tell us which Mac...

MiniDV tape based camcorders continue to provide the best available video quality - this is because DV (and HDV) use a lot less compression when writing the digital video stream to the digital tape. Connecting an Apple Macintosh and miniDV tape based camcorder requires a 4-pin to 6-pin firewire cable to connect the camcorder's DV port to the Mac's Firewire 400 port. All Macs made in about the last ten years have a standard firewire 400 port. iMovie and iMovie HD will import the video. The only exceptio nto the firewire rule for Macs is the MacBook Air - no firewire port...

Hard Disc Drive (HDD) and flash memory camcorders use the same compression methods - a lot more than miniDV - so HDD and flash memory video quality is not as good as miniDV. Don't get me wrong, it is not bad (DVD based camcorders ARE bad), but just not quite as good. For the most part, if your Mac is new, you connect the computer and camcorder with USB, copy the files from the camcorder to the computer and convert the video files - then iMovie can use the file. You may need to download and install StreamClip to do the conversion - it is available from apple.com's downloads area.

I don't recommend HDD camcorders for three reasons:
1) They cannot handle vibrations. This can be loud audio from a band, big crown noise or a motor (or jet engine, race cars). The hard drive heads will park and not record in an effort to protect the platters.

2) They do not do well in high altitude (anything over about (,700 feet). Since I don't know where you live or want to take video (skiing in the mountains?), I don't know if this matters.

3) When you drop/break the camera, how do you get the video off the hard drive? With miniDV tape or flash memory, you can typically take the media out and use another camera... with a HDD camcorder, you will need to work with a data recovery service like DriveSavers... open your wallet...

The Canon FS10 and FS100. They have a mic jack... so do the Canon ZR900 and ZR930. And I have no particular affinity for Canon, I use a Sony HDR-HC1 and HDR-FX1. But for "best bang for the buck", the Canon flash camcorders are probably it... in your stated price range.

What video editing software should I buy?

Q. Well, I want a video editing software more powerful than windows movie maker but not really expensive either. I really like Pinnacle Studio 14 Ultimate but I only have a small pocket HD camcorder. I might be thinking of getting a green screen aswell so it has to be compatible with a green screen. I'd say the budget is a £100?

A. Well your budget is perfect for what I use, Movie Edit Pro http://www.magix.com/gb/movie-edit-pro/. HD compatible, powerful and easy to use. What more would you want!

What are some good camcorders from best buy that shoot a short video?

How do I transfer video from the hard drive to the SD card on a JVC Everio GZ-MG630RU camcorder?

Q. I have a 2010 JVC Everio GZ-MG630RU camcorder. i recently bought a laptop with Win-7. i found out that Win-7 does not recognize my camcorder . My question is: how do i go about transferring the videos on my camcorders Hard Drive to the cameras mini SD card ?

Thanx

A. Excerpt from Amazon.com. Read your manual and your question makes no sense. Why do you want to copy from HDD to SD when the camera doesn't seem to have an mini SD card?

Everio Features

All 2009 Everios make sharing and watching videos easier than ever. New for this year is the One Touch Export function that allows Everio videos to be imported into iTunes and loaded into an iPod or iPhone. All 2009 Everios also offer One Touch DVD burning and the One Touch Upload function that JVC introduced to users in 2008 as a new and convenient way to upload videos to YouTube.

To use any of the three functions, simply connect Everio to a PC using the supplied USB cable. Then, the user chooses one of three buttons on the Everio: UPLOAD, EXPORT, or DIRECT DVD. Pressing the button will launch the appropriate Windows PC application that comes bundled with Everio, and the user simply follows the simple on-screen prompts. With just a few mouse clicks the process of uploading to YouTube, exporting to iTunes, burning to disc or transferring to an external hard disk drive will be completed. For uploading to YouTube, the user can perform an in-camera edit of any length video to fit the 10-minute YouTube limit.

For disc based archiving, there is an alternative to using a PC. JVC offers the CU-VD50 Direct DVD Burner/Player as an option, which allows burning of Everio videos to a DVD disc without having to use a PC.

The new Everio MediaBrowser software supplied with all Everio models is a Windows application providing an easy-to-search calendar-type graphical interface for indexing and finding video files. Thumbnail images of recorded videos and stills are superimposed on the calendar so it’s easy to see when any scene was recorded. The Everio MediaBrowser also allows easy playback, simple cut editing, and "Decomotion" to spruce up recorded footage with animated graphics for upload to YouTube. It also supports Export to iTunes, Upload to YouTube, burning to disc or transferring to HDD.

Another new feature found on all Everio camcorders is Digest Playback, which offers an easy and entertaining way to check the content residing on Everio’s HDD or SD/SDHC card. The function automatically selects highlight scenes from among the recorded content using JVC’s proprietary algorithm and plays back what looks like a "coming attractions" trailer for a movie. Sixty minutes of footage is condensed into five minutes of highlight scenes.

Other Everio features have been enhanced for 2009. Laser Touch Operation has been updated to allow control of zooming and recording using either the Laser Touch scroll bar or buttons next to the LCD screen, as well as by the standard zoom lever and REC button. And as before, Laser Touch makes it easy to browse through thumbnail images of recorded scenes and access menu selection. Power-linked operation, long offered by JVC, goes a step further this year. Simply opening the LCD monitor automatically opens the built-in lens cover and powers up the camcorder. Closing the LCD also closes the lens cover and shuts down the power. With Quick Restart, recording can start in about one second after the LCD is re-opened.

In addition to performance and convenience, the 2009 Everio line offers plenty of style and shooting comfort. A new design features elegant curves, a silver-framed LCD and a comfortable angled grip with a new dual use strap. The strap can be used in the usual camcorder fashion, supporting the user’s hand when shooting, or it can be extended and used as a wrist strap like the type on most digital still cameras.

Could you recommend any data recovery company located in the Philippines?
Q. I need all my data extracted from a non-working Western Digital External Hard Drive My Passport 500gb... It didn't get any water in it, but it may possibly have been dropped... sheeessshh.. Please please please help!!!

Also, I have a JVC Everio Camcorder HDD that somebody mistakenly deleted the files!!!! I need help badly, that's the only place I have my son's first memories!!!
Thank you very much for the info... already contacted them and i'm crossing my fingers that everything will go well... :)

A. Hello,, try this one:
Intellistor Solutions Philippines Inc.
3rd level, digishoppe festival supermall
alabang muntinlupa city.
Tel Nos: (632) 7102894
Telefax: (632) 8056730

By the way, their rates as of July 18, 2010 are:
*Php4,400 for successful data recovery jobs (flash based memory).
*Php8,800 for successful data recovery jobs (hard disk drives).
*No fee for unsuccessful jobs.

I hope they can help you with your portable HDD. As for the Camcorder HDD that has been only accidentally deleted and the HDD is still working, that would be easy to recover as long as the HDD is not yet used again. There is still a 60% chance of recovering it without help from a data recovery company. I even did it once with a colleagues SD card from his DSLR camera

How do I get my camcorder to transfer film to my PC?
Q. I have a Mini DV camcorder that I got last Christmas, that I was told would be able to connect tom my PC. My camcorder, a Samsung SCD-353, did not come with any software for the camcorder itself, but it did give me a USB cable to hook it up to the computer with. However, whenever I try to get film from my camcorder to my PC, it does not recognize it, and I don't know what I'm missing here..

I have Ulead VideoStudio 9 SE DVD software installed, which is the only software my camera came with..

Please help! :o)

A. Depending on the features available in your camcorder model, here are a few things that you can do to achieve your objective:
1 -- If you have firewire port in your camcorder, get a firewire card installed in your PC and then using the s/w provided with the camcorder, transfer the video onto the pc.
2 -- If your camcorder supports USB streaming, then you can you the USB port on your PC to get the video transfered onto your PC.
3 -- If your PC has a TV tuner card, give the o/p of your camcorder to this tuner card and then get the video transfered onto your PC

Does a camcorder have to be 0 lux to pick up infrared light?

Q. I want to be able to shoot in complete or near complete darkness. The camcorder I'm looking to buy is 1.7 lux with it's night time mode. I was wondering if I got an infrared light to go with it, if it would pick it up or if it has to be a 0 lux camera for that to be possible?

A. IR has little to do woth lux - it has to be sensitive to infrared light - period.

What cheaper camcorder should I buy that has night mode?
Q. Hi everyone, I know this is asked a lot, but I want to buy a camcorder between 200-475$. It needs to have pretty good quality (For posting on youtube, etc.), a night-mode (preferably 0 lux/ Total darkness!), and if possible vista compatibility or at least a usb hook-up. Anyone have any ideas!? Thanks!

A. I would look into the aiptek a-hd, not a great camera but it's selling for around 100$ which is cheap enough to buy another one in a year or 2. Has a night mode and does 720p video on an sd card. The videos supposedly also play in your xbox 360 as well.

What Type Of Camcorder Should I Get?

Q. I want a CAMCORDER for Music Video, and Sketch comedy purposes!
I want an HD camcorder
i need help because i don't want to screw up like last year i bought a crappy camcorder
My budget is $0-$150

A. To be honest, I spent 1000$ for mine, and I am still not happy with it. You need to save a bit more money, and then get a DSLR for Music Video. Normal camcorder won't do the job. Unless you are really good at postproduction, then you might get away with a HD flipcam.

What camcorder should I buy for vloging?

Consumer level HD camcorders have 4 problems. 1) Blurry, fuzzy, out of focus areas closely around people in videos taken by consumer level HD camcorders. 2) Any movement, even a wave or lifting an arm, while in front of a recording consumer level HD camcorder, results in screen ghosts and artifacts being left on the video track, following the movement. Makes for bad video, sports videos are unwatchable. 3) These Consumer level HD camcorders all have a habit of the transferred to computer files are something you need to convert, thus losing your HD quality, to work with your editing software. 4) Mandatory maximum record times - 1 hour, 30 minutes, 8 minutes, 3 minutes – four different times advertised as maximum record time for some consumer level HD camcorders. No event I have ever been to is that short. Either take multiple camcorders or pack up with out getting the end of the event on video.

MiniDV is currently the most popular format for consumer digital camcorders. MiniDV camcorders are typically more affordable than their HDD and DVD counterparts. Each MiniDV tape will typically hold an hour of footage at normal recording speed and quality. MiniDV tapes are available for purchase at not only electronic and camera stores, but also at drugs stores and grocery stores, making them easy to find while your on vacation. There are literally hundreds of MiniDV camcorders available; both in standard and high-definition.

Canon makes many MiniDV tape camcorders, look into the Canon line.

Prosumer Camcorder with High Frames Per Second?
Q. Can anyone point me in the right direction for a Camcorder with a high Frames Per Second? I am looking for Flash Memory stored, although CCD is acceptable as well.
In my original post, I forgot to mention two items:

1. Budget is not an issue.

2. MiniDV is also acceptable.

A. You need to spend a little time on research and explain better what you are looking for.

1) Outside cheap security cameras and other inexpensive low frame rate cameras, there is only a few frame rates, 24 and 29.97 (30) for tape and SD cameras, and 25 and 30 for HD

2) Flash memory and CCD are two different and unrelated things. The only thing in common is both CAN be part of a camcorder. Flash memory is storage media, like MiniDv tape, an optical disk, or an internal drive. The CCS is the cameras sensor, which can also be cmos or other types. One has nothing to do with the other.

High frame rate? are you looking for a high-speed camera to produce slow motion video? If so, how fast do you need, the faster the more expensive it gets. Casio has a line that does well up to 800 frames a second for about $1000. If you need faster, then I hope money really is not object because true high speed, bullet stopping cameras are in the $20,000 neighborhood and require a similar investment in lighting. A simple search for high speed video cameras will get you started.

When you see 50fps (50i or 50p) or 60fps (60i or 60p) in relation to a consumer video camera it is refering to video fields per second and is no different than 25 or 30 Frames per second. Both fields are shot at the exact same time and have no effect of your ability to slow the video in editing. 30/60 is marginally better than 25/50 IF supported by a suitable data rate. Adding to the confusion, SOME cameras use the sensor in 2 or more sectors and record the partial frame. The best example is security systems recording say 120 fps. They are recording 15 full frames per second, but each frame is broken into 2 fields then cut into 4 quadrants (15*2*4=120). So you MAY find a 60 Frame per second camera, but looking at the data rate you will see they are just giving smaller frames.

MiniDv will not be used in a true high speed camera, but due to its low compression rate is a good format for slowing to 33%-50% of true time. To get the bullet shots, you need to slow by 1/5000 or More!

So, can't help with specifics without knowing what you are trying to do, and you have to learn enough on your own to better ask the question.

How do professional cameramen film in low light so well?

Q. I've just bought a Kogan video camera (new Australian brand, not well known) that from my limited experience of camcorders is somewhere in the middle of the video camera spectrum (definitely not lousy, but nothing special either) and I"ve tried several times filming in a dark room with Night mode with very poor results. I can't actually tell the difference between normal and Night mode.

Do you have experience with video cameras that film well in low light? I made a bit of money recently and considering doing a trade-in somewhere.

A. Hi Steph:

Let's boil down this whole discussion into two things:
1) Your AU$399 (~USD$425) Kogan camcorder (which tells us your original budget range). That's no where near the "middle" of the $50 - $100,000 USD video camera spectrum.
2) The phrase "how do professional cameramen film... so well?"

It all boils down to spending good money for good equipment. The professional camera crews use equipment that costs thousands more than what you have now, plus --if you are not talking just InfraRed shooting in total or near-total darkness-- their cameras have multiple gain-boost settings for low light.

If you are trying to compare home camcorder footage of any kind with professional broadcast TV shows, just stop it. Their gear is way more advanced, plus (as others have mentioned) they also have post-production signal processors to help boost image parameters and quality.

The pro's also have access to "image intensifiers" they mount between their lens and camcorder (or on the front lens in cheaper cameras), like the AstroScope, which for around $6,000 USD will work for even a consumer camcorder or SLR. These can create an image using only starlight from the sky.

Your Kogan brand is not highly rated in picture quality to start with (see CNet Australia's review: http://www.cnet.com.au/kogan-full-hd-1080p-video-camcorder-camera-339293191.htm ). If you happen to have a more-expensive Kogan model, I apologize, but not much. A not-well-known brand that's in Australian K-Marts says a lot in itself. If you do trade-up, go for a name brand that's done this for awhile & has a track record for image quality as well as construction quality.

If you really have an interest in "Ghost Hunters" style IR shooting and not just poorly-lit parties, get a good used Sony Handycam that has true Sony "NightShot" features (the older consumer NightShot models could also "see" through certain garments, so Sony crippled newer Handycams' IR features).

The professional IR camera crews also use "bright" (but invisible to the eye) InfraRed spotlights mounted on the camera tops.

hope this helps,
--Dennis C.

How can I get night vision/mode on my camcorder?
Q. I have a JVC- Everio, and I can't seem to find the "night mode" on it, even though the guide says it has it. How do I activate it?

A. unfortunately most camcorders either come with it or don't if yours does not have it then your out of luck also most night vision for camcorders suck your better off buying some lighting equipment to film at night.

What is the best camera and camcorder combo?

Q. Is there a combo that has best of both worlds (for this black friday)? For camera, I prefer at least 10 MP, takes good night photos. For camcorder, I prefer HD and minimum of 30X optical zoom, and digital stabilization.

A. its easy for a camera to take good night pictures, its called a flash. it comes free with the camera.

no digital camera that takes high quality pictures comes (or even has available) with a 30x zoom. that is because a zoom of that range is only practical for micro sized CCD sensors, like the 1/8th inch ones used in cheap consumer camcorders.

imho the best compromise cameras currently available are the "point and shoot" pocket digital cameras. my favorite was the Olympus Stylus 550wp. built in flash, ruggedized case, large CCD, waterproof, HD video. only 3x optical zoom and no stabilizer. you don't need a stabilizer at 3x unless you are falling down drunk.

Where can i buy a cheap Professional Camcorder?
Q. Where can i buy a cheap proffesional camcorder. possibly second, third, or a fourth hand camera. I just need one for some low budget skate videos. I would like it to be under 100 dollars and have quality better that a bottom line consumer camcorder now. Thanks so much.

A. Hi will,
You can buy Professional Camcorder on Amazon, here is the link
I recommend Canon DC100 DVD Camcorder w/25x Optical Zoom
Digital video camera that records straight to 3-inch DVD-R/RW media
25x optical zoom with built-in image stabilizer; 2.7-inch LCD screen
Canon's DIGIC DV image processor for vivid video and exceptional color quality
Widescreen Button lets you switch from standard 4:3 to 16:9 Widescreen Mode
