Can I shoot Snowboard videos with a Camcorder that shoots 30 FPS?

Q. Since the 2011/2012 snowboard season just came up I thought it might be a cool idea to film some of it. There is a really good deal for a camcorder at a local store and it shoots in HD with 30 FPS. Are 30FPS enough to film sport videos clearly? Please help, thanks a lot!

A. A speed of 30 fps is adequate, and it has the added advantage of being compatible with a lot of other equipment you might need to use, such as editing systems.

How clear each of the 30 frames per second looks depends on how much light you have. In bright sunlight, you can use fast shutter speeds and each frame will be very sharp and distinct although this can produce an undesirable stroboscopic effect in extremely bright light. In low light, each frame will be blurry. In both cases, motion will be reasonably smooth.

If you want really smooth motion, you need much higher frame rates, but few cameras (especially consumer models) are capable of higher rates. A camera that shoots 60 fps progressive can provide a great improvement, although displaying the results may still be problematic since it requires a compatible display or TV set. Higher rates work even better but require specialized cameras and often specialized editing and display equipment.

What is a good camera to use for youtube?
Q. I want a high definition camcorder like the one macbarbie07 and ilikeweylie use.... I just don't know what kind to buy, PLEASE HELP! winner gets 10 pts.

A. Canon PowerShot A1300 16.0 MP Digital Camera with 5x Digital Image Stabilized Zoom 28mm Wide-Angle Lens with 720p HD Video Recording Great camera for the price. Purchased the camera in May 2012 to shoot family events, friends ect. You could not ask for a better price vs performance camera. Very simple to use, excellent picture and video quality. I would suggest getting a cushioned camera case that includes the USB thumb drive reader for $10, the case is perfect for travel and storage when not in use. The USB reader is a great option when offloading the memory card.

Can you help me find what I need to watch home videos from a mini camcorder videocassette?

Q. I found some old mini videos from when i was a kid...but I don't know what the holder thing is called that you put the mini tapes in to watch them in the VCR. Do they come in different sizes? All these mini tapes say 30 on it. What do I have to buy to watch them?

A. The VHS-C tapes went into a VHS adapter. You can still get them for around $10.

If the cassette is not VHS-C, you will need the camera to view them.

Looking for a fairly inexpensive camcorder to video my kids?
Q. SInce my old Sony has just recently died, I am looking into some different camcorders, but really lost at all the specifications! Should I get an HD? Looking to spend $ 150 - $ 350. Thank you!

A. HD camcorders interpolate the video, which means of every 25 frames of video, 4 or 5 frames are taken by the lens assembly; the other frames in between these are filled in by the camcorder inner circuitry, thus giving you not true video. It looks like this -one frame from the lens assembly, 7or 8 from the electronic circuitry, one frame from the lens assembly, 7or 8 from the electronic circuitry, one frame from the lens assembly, 7or 8 from the electronic circuitry, one frame from the lens assembly, 7or 8 from the electronic circuitry, from front to back of the video. Near impossible to edit, even when you have the Multi processor computer with the big Graphics and sound cards that is required to edit, view, watch and work with the files a HD camcorder produces.

Consumer level HD camcorders have 4 problems. 1) Blurry, fuzzy, out of focus areas closely around people in videos taken by consumer level HD camcorders. 2) Any movement, even a wave or lifting an arm, while in front of a recording consumer level HD camcorder, results in screen ghosts and artifacts being left on the video track, following the movement. Makes for bad video, sports videos are unwatchable. 3) These Consumer level HD camcorders all have a habit of the transferred to computer files are something you need to convert, thus losing your HD quality, to work with your editing software. 4) Mandatory maximum record times - 1 hour, 30 minutes, 8 minutes, 3 minutes four different times advertised as maximum record time for some consumer level HD camcorders. No event I have ever been to is that short. Either take multiple camcorders or pack up with out getting the end of the event on video.

MiniDV is currently the most popular format for consumer digital camcorders. MiniDV camcorders are typically more affordable than their HDD and DVD counterparts. Each MiniDV tape will typically hold an hour of footage at normal recording speed and quality. MiniDV tapes are available for purchase at not only electronic and camera stores, but also at drugs stores and grocery stores, making them easy to find while your on vacation. There are literally hundreds of MiniDV camcorders available; both in standard and high-definition. And add the fact that to get a HD camcorder that could produce better video quality footage, one would have to spend in excess of $3500 for that camcorder that could produce higher quality video.

Golf Swing Analysis Software?

Q. I am looking at getting software that I can use to analyze my golf swing, as well as my son's batting motion. What is the best software that is reasonably priced for personal use?

A. The best possible software that you can use is the

V1 software.
You can get it for free for the basic modem, but if you want more advanced, you can pay a little bit more money for the premium. If you do the premium, they even have the camcorder use for your swing.

I use v1. I've been using it for 3 years now.
It's great for analyzing my own golf swing or any sport or kind.
It is the program that the Golf Channel uses for the analysis for the golf swing.
They even have models for you to download.(If you are premium). They have swimming, golf, soccer, football, you name it!
as well as baseball.

Get V1 software at

www.v1golf.com

Hope it helped

what should i film in for smoother motion quality?
Q. like less lag.

720 HD 60p
-or-
720 HD 30p

and if you say 30p should I have SteadyShot ON or OFF
none of these answers are answering my question. just answer the question and choose one

A. Hi Mikey:

It looks like you may have upgraded camera gear since you asked about your CyberShot DSC-H9 a couple of years ago, since the H9 doesn't have any 720 HD settings (or HD settings at all!). But since you mention SteadyShot, and not the generic term O.I.S., you must still have a Sony model.

And since you didn't say exactly what kind of motion-footage (there's a difference between shooting a golf swing and shooting a car race -- the first, you might want each frame crisply frozen in time with no blur for analysis; the second, you might want the cars to actually show some motion-blur), I'll assume you are still shooting skateboard videos. Some of this is frame-rate, but mostly it's actually the shutter-speed (the DURATION for each frame, not how many in a second) that helps determine how the footage appears during playback.

And speaking of skateboard shooting, are you shooting POV while on the board? If so, SteadyShot might be useful. If you are shooting others on their boards, your camera should be on a tripod with SteadyShot turned off.

As far as frame-rate, it can be more a matter of taste, as you can see in this "720p30 vs. 720p60" discussion a few years ago on Videomaker.com: http://www.videomaker.com/community/forums/topic/720p30-vs-720p60

But if you are wanting to have smoother slo-mo action of skater stunts, go for 60fps. Just keep in mind the bigger file size (twice as many frames), and for some cameras the compression to handle twice the data (at 60-progressive) will result in more digital artifacts in the final footage. (For typical consumer cameras & camcorders there's got to be a trade-off somewhere.)

And speaking of bigger files and twice-the-frames, what you are calling "lag" might be referring to your computer's playback of the raw footage. Many consumer shooters' computers (especially laptops) are sadly under-powered to handle ANY kind of HD footage without "lagging" or stuttering. This has nothing to do with camera settings, other than decompressing twice the frames as well as the huge HD data might be choking your PC.

But if you have a CMOS sensor camera, and are mistaking "rolling shutter" (a/k/a "Jello effect") for "lag", neither setting will cure that problem: see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jello_effect

You'll have to make the final judgement, but my best advice: Do like the pro-review mags & websites do & shoot some test footage with the various settings. "Slate" each sequence with a large card or paper sheet with Marx-A-Lot, noting stuff like "720p @30 StdyShot OFF w/ 1/250 shutter". Then you can render each one and decide which one "looks best" to you. Hollywood cameramen have been shooting "camera tests" since the silent movie days.

If you care to discuss what you exactly mean by "less lag", feel free to post another Additional Details update, and we can take it from there. (Also post your camera model # and what computer model you are using.) And if this whole discussion is just "hypothetical" because you are camera-shopping and want to decide between models with different frame-rates, please say so. Clear "context" is important to any technical discussion.

hope this helps,

What are the best brands of camcorders?

Q. I want a camcorder (preferably under 1,000) and I would like to know which brands work best. I know how to work electronics well so if it was hard to figure out that would not be a problem.

A. Honestly, for the price, it is hard to beat JVC cameras. They are very inexpensive and are a high quality camera. If you are looking for a pretty cheap (price wise) camera, look into Samsung, Panasonic, and JVC. These are all well known brands with a good quality and great price. Here are some to check out. My personal opinion is to go with the JVC Everio.

What is the best camcorder to capture fast motion video under $1,000?
Q. What is the best camcorder to capture fast motion video under $1,000?

A. The Casio exilim EX-F1 is priced with kit a few bucks over $1000. However quality is relative because you have to accept severely reduced resolution to get the high speed feature.

Need Filter Program or Software for 8mm Camcorder Video Footage?

Q. I have a Sony 8mm camcorder. I recorded some outdoor footage. I uploaded it to my computer however, the scenes are a little grainy and a bit pixilated. What "free" software or program can I use to sharpen and add some clarity to the footage. (10) points to the person that gives me good info that works. Thank You!

A. There's not a lot you can do about it.
Make sure your watching it at the captured resolution as making it a larger dimension will make it look worse.

The pixelation should only occur after encoding the original footage, try increasing the encoders bitrate to improve quality.

You could see if you need some deinterlacing to improve it - http://www.100fps.com/ explains a bit

Getting more "Detail" from an image is something they only do in movies.

How do you transfer things recorded on an 8mm to a DVD?
Q. I was going through some boxes and found some old 8mm tapes of some of my stuff from high school and old birthday parties. I thought it would be nice to transfer them to DVD.

I put the tapes in the 8mm camcorder and plugged the camcorder into my DVD-R to record the tapes.

Then I found that the camcorder no longer works.

Well, I thought there was an adapter where you could put the 8mm tape into a tape that resembled a VHS tape. However, after some research I found that no such adapter exists for an 8mm tape.

I have asked if anyone else has an 8mm tape, and so far no one does. I found that places like Wal-Mart can transfer them for me, but the lowest price I've found is $25 per tape, and I have about 20 tapes, so I don't want to spend that much.

I thought worse case scenario I could go to a place like Rent-A Center and see if they had an 8mm camcorder I could borrow.

Anyway, any suggestions?

A. If the Rent-A-Center idea doesn't pan out, you might get a refurbished 8mm camcorder for about $100-$150. For example:

Can most digital cameras now all do full hd 1080p video recording?

Q.

A. Most of them do 1080p HD video. However please be aware that most compact cameras, or smart-phones like iPhones, are not good at video recording. If light is good, they do an okay job. When light is dull, they are almost unusable. If you zoom in and do video, there can be lot of shake. You may be better off with iPhone or some digital camcorder that offers 30-40x zoom.

Which is the Best Camera for Video Recording for Youtube 2013?
Q.

A. Define "Best".

For low light conditions, Sony HDR-FX1000 or any other camcorder with a lens diameter of 72mm or larger and Imaging chip 3CCD or 3CMOS system that is 1/3" or larger.

For infrared recording, Sony HVR-A1 in "NightShot" mode to capture monochrome video under zero visible light conditions.

For fast action and slow-motion playback, any GoPro or Contour - these may be best as "pocket cams", too.

For loud audio, any camcorder with manual audio gain control.

For very low audio, any camcorder with an external mic jack and manual audio gain control so an external mic can be used - and the low audio level can be made higher.

Since consumer camcorders can range in price from $80 to about $3,000, and there is such a wide range of video and audio quality issues, please set a budget and tell us what your plans are to capture things to YouTube... then we might be able to provide a little more detail...

why are my iMovie film clips out of sequence?

Q. when I import video from my sony handycam digital disk camcorder into imovie, the film clips are always out of sequence. for example, when recording a basketball game, I get the clips showing up in imovie out of sequence from the actual game. is there something I can do to correct that?

A. Maybe you don't have the right codecs installed.

How do you import video from your camcorder to iMovie HD?
Q. My dad and I are trying to make a movie and we have video on the camcorder but every time we plug it in, iPhoto just pops up with all of the pictures that are on the camcorder. Any help?
And Little Dog, how do you disable the automatic pop up in iPhoto? I went to preferences but couldn't find it...

A. Which camcorder are you using?

Which Mac are you using?

If you are using a miniDV or Digital 8 tape based camcorder, you need to import the video using firewire. The firewire cable did not come in the box with the camcorder. USB will not work. USB is used ONLY to transfer stills from the memory card.

If you are using a hard disc drive (HDD) or flash memory camcorder, you need to disable iPhoto's "automatic pop-up" (in iPhoto's preferences), and let the HDD or flash memory mount like any other external mass storage device. Copy the files to the Mac - and you probably will need to convert the highly compressed MPEG2 files using StreamClip available from apple's downloads area.

If you are using a DVD based camcorder, you will need a drawer loading DVD drive (I like the ones from LaCie). Download and install HandBrake to rip the video from the finalized DVD. NEVER put a small (8cm) or odd-shaped optical disc in a slot loader...

Analog camcorders (Beta, VHS, VHS-C, Video8, Hi8) with a DSC function will also only transfer photos over USB. You need an analog/digital bridge like those from Canopus to convert from analog to digital video.

How do you transfer footage from camcorder to Laptop?

Q. I have a Sony Digital 8 Handycam Camcorder and I have a usb cable for it but I cant put my footage from it onto my laptop all I can do is record while it is connected to my computer.
Can anybody help me please?

A. You should be able to open up your documents program then look at the top where you would find the different drives listed and find one labeled SONY DIGITAL 8 (D:) it could be a different letter though. Then open the file and find the one you want and the download to your computer.

Which camcorder tape is the best for my camcorder?
Q. I have a digital 8 camcorder. What type of hi8 film is the best? I see different kinds still being sold as "premium" "camcorder tape" or "standard quality." I'm thinking that if the data is stored in digital form anyway, it doesn't matter if the tape is "standard" or "premium." There is no noise when it is stored as digital data, right?

A. I would receommed that you look for the best per/minute price on name brand metal particle tapes. The premium, standard, etc. designators are marketing terms and are not very reliable to indicate actual tape quality.

The concern with choosing a tape for digital video purposes is not noise so much as longevity and compatible tape formulation. Digital8 systems are designed to record most accurately on metal particle tapes. Formerly MP's were only available when labelled as Hi8 or Digital8 but this has now changed and almost all 8mm tapes are metal particle formulations as well.

You should archive your recordings at SP recording speed because LP may be difficult to playback on a different machine because of minute variations if the tape path alignment.

Also, longer tapes are available under Digital8 labels than Hi8 or 8mm. The 90/135 Digital8 tapes will go 90 minutes in SP vs. the 60 minutes that a Hi8/8mm 120/180 tape will run in a Digital8 machine.

What is a good starter camcorder for filming Parkour?

Q. I want to find a good starter camcorder that is easy to use, but is still good. I want to film my friend doing parkour.

A. Hi "Dino" and welcome to Yahoo!Answers:

Since parkour and other freerunning activities typically would involve you moving with the "action", two things to look for in a camcorder for this would be:
1) a wide angle lens (or decent "wide" setting on the zoom). This is both to help keep the action in-frame, as well as minimize the shakiness of the image. The "tighter" the zoom or angle-of-view, the harder it is to keep a moving object framed-up, plus if you are running with the camera as well, your movements will be magnified by a tighter lens angle.

2) a good Optical Image Stabilization feature ("OIS"). Optical stabilization works better than digital image stabilization methods. Canon labels theirs "OIS" and Sony calls it "SteadyShot". Again, since parkour involves running and following a running subject, your hand-held footage will benifit from image stabilization features.

Since you are a 16-year old saving up for film school plans & with limited income, you might shop around on eBay or Craigs' List, or even a local pawn shop (have your folks help you deal with potential sellers) for a good used Canon, Sony, or JVC model with MiniDV cassette storage. These store the highest bit-rate video for best quality and have good image stabilization; and most models accept inexpensive "fisheye" wide angle adapters (Opteka and Sunpak are cheap lens brands popular with skateboarders for their action & POV shots).

Your best bargains will be slightly older "standard definition" (non-HD) models, but you'll still be able to shoot 16:9 aspect ratio widescreen (almost all MiniDV models have this setting). I've purchased several Canon ZR-series & JVC GR-series used for under-$100 each, with good success.

Just make sure you have a FireWire port or card on your editing computer to be able to transfer & edit the MiniDV video.

If you opt for a non-tape camcorder, just stay away from DVD and hard-drive models, since neither type deals with vibration very well during shooting.

hope this helps,

What profession video camera should i purchase?
Q. I need to buy a professional HD Camcorder. It needs to have a lot of customizable options, and i need to be able to make it look like film. I also need to be able to switch the lens on it. Any ideas? Thanks!
Budget is $5000

A. Well, I would advice you to go in for a Canon Camcorder. Its a good Camcorder both for professionals as well as amateurs. Even i have one that i bought last week. I speak from Experience I travel a lot, so Im always on the lookout for good locations and good cameras. Last month; I got myself a new Camcorder the Canon HF11. I just love this Camcorder. Its a hundred times better than the one I had before. Its got 32GB of inbuilt memory and an SD card slot if I need more. Its like nothing I have ever seen before. Its trendy, its lightweight and its compact so I can easily take it anywhere without having to worry. The best part is, I can record in full HD, so I can even view my videos on my big screen TV. Oh boy! And its so easy to use that even my 9 year old daughter goes around recording her younger brother.

If I buy a camcorder on Amazon and have it shipped to me, is there a risk of damaging it?

Q. See, I don't want it to be partially damaged on the way here, but still functional just so it can stop working half a year later.

Would you recommend buying it online for like half price and having it shipped or buying it at the stores for 2 times the price I get it online?

It's a Kodak Zi8 camcorder, by the way.

A. If it is damaged, simply return to Amazon, you will get full refund.

Can someone help me with information on prosumer camcorders?

Q. I'm looking for a good quality HD camcorder to use in independent feature-length filmmaking. Several action shots/scenes appear in my screenplay so I need a camcorder that will capture the fast pace of the movie. Would like some advice from people who are in the business and have professional experience with cinema-like production quality cameras.

A. To begin with, a prosumer camcorder will not be a "cinema-like production quality camera".

A "cinema-like production quality camera" would be in the Panavision, CineAlta or Arriflex environment or maybe drop to a Red One or Silicon Imaging camera...

For action shots in the prosumer environment stick with least compression. Most likely HDV, but better with XDCAM, HDCAM or DVCPRO HD formats.

So... prosumer HDV points you to the Sony HDR-FX1000. Above this gets you to pro, below this is consumer.

What is the best camcorder to buy to make youtube videos?

Q. I want to record 1080p high definition youtube videos, but every camcorder i find that looks good has horrible reviews and its driving me crazy. I just need a high definition camera thats good for making youtube videos.

A. If your just starting out, I would recommend something like a flip camera, you should practice with a cheaper camera before you move onto 1080p (Video Cameras like that's prices usually start around 300 dollars) Then again having said that, here are some links to some nice, affordable, 1080p Cameras

How do I get my video from the camcorder to the PC?
Q. I have a Panasonic camcorder. The still shots go onto the picture card and the video goes onto the tape. When I plug it into my PC with the USB cable, it will only get what's off the card, not the tape. The camera has a DV port, is a DV cable what I would need to get the video from the tape to the PC?

A. Yep...you need a IEEE-1394 interface (FireWire) cable and your PC will need a FireWire port (not all do). The FireWire cards are cheap and easy to install. You can use free software like Windows Movie Maker to capture the video from the cam to your PC.

What is the best free software to capture videos from a DV camcorder?

Q. I have a DV camcorder and I want to use software that will capture the video on my camcorder so I can view on my PC. In addition, I need to software to convert the video into a format so I can burn to DVDs. Does anyone know what I should use and how this is done?

A. FOR THE CAPTURE PART:
http://windv.mourek.cz/
WinDV
As far as I am concerned, it is the best.
It may have to do with the fact that's also the only one I know of...

As for converting in order to burn to DVDs, that's a trickier thing to do...
A visit to : http://www.videohelp.com/
should put everything in its right place though !

How do i get my videos off of my dv video camcorder onto my computer ?
Q. i bought a video capture pci card, but i can only plug in the composite video
the videos have no sound ???
am i missing something?

A. DV (Digital Video) camera connected to a composite video input connector? You will loose quality. The composite connector will only capture video. You must also connect the audio to the computer, is there a audio connector that you connect to the microphone connector on your computer? You will need to configure your software to select the video and audio source.
Is there a USB or Firewire connector on the camera? Please check the manual. USB and Firewire will allow you to capture a higher quality of video.

How do I capturing the date and time settings from my camcorder footage to my pc when editing video's?

Q. I am very new to video editing and I have just figured out how to capture footage from my camcorder to my pc. When I do this however, the time and date settings from the footage is lost. It's a canon camcorder and I have tried with pinnacle and ulead. Any suggestions?

A. You haven't said what sort of camcorder you're using - only MiniDV includes a date / time stamp. Even then, conventional editors can't do anything with it - you need a special app like DVDate to make it visible.

What kind of video editing software can you use for a gl1 camcorder?
Q. I have a canon gl1 camcorder and i was wondering if there is any software you can use (i you even can) to edit videos and such.

A. Pretty much any half decent video editor can handle standard definition DV format digital video. Even MovieMaker (bundled with Windows XP - SP2 or newer - including Vista).

You need a firewire cable to connect the DV port of the camcorder to the firewire port on the computer. USB won't work. USB to firewire converter/adapter/hub/cables won't work.

If your computer does not have a firewire port, hopefully it has an available expansion slot so you can add one.

In this context, firewire, IEEE1394, i.LINK and DV are all the same thing... and they are not USB.

With the minDV tape based camcorder connected via firewire, power up the camcorder and put it into Play or VCR mode. Launch the video editor and Import or Capture the video.

Importing videos from camcorder to iMovie issues?
Q. I am trying to upload videos from my camcorder to iMovie on my macbook but when I connect my camcorder (Sony DCR-HC40) to my Mac using the cable the videos that show up are from the memory stick, not the tape that I have in there. I have the camera on the tape setting, not the memory settings. I would appreciate any help I could get! Thanks

A. It's very easy to input your video from camera to your macbook,iMovie will automatically detect when you have a FireWire camcorder connected.Perhaps you may follow this step by step:
1.Connect camcorder to your Mac computer with cable (USB/Wifi)
2.Select mode of camcorder such as PC/Computer mode
3.iMovie will automatic open Import window
4.If DVD Player automatic open. just quit DVD Player first
5.Now, you can review your video or select "Import All"(make sure your switch is set to "Automatic")
6.If you select "Manual", you can import some clip to iMovie
7.If you import from Tape based device (DV/HDV), iMovie will automatic revise tape and import all
8.iMovie automatic create thumbnail video after complete import

how do i get a clean smooth video for streaming and youtube?

Q. i noticed some peoples videos are clean picture but whenever the camera moves the picture skips and gives me a headache. what kind of camcorders should i avoid? or what features should i look for to have a smooth video?

A. I use a Digital Camcorder for my video projects(Palmcorder)..
I use DV-tape..which creates a DV-file..
My computer will upload the camcorder footage--creating a DV-avi File..
I remain in DV-avi for all the editing--once my movie is nice and smooth..
I look to make Upload Files..
YouTube..gets a 720p File..
If I'm to make a DVD-video,,I'll render the DV-avi File..for MPEG-2 and Dolby-Digital audio..
===
Always use DV-avi(AVI)..un-compressed..Large Frame..video files--for editing..
..trying to edit a wmv/wma file can be a "jerky" process..
..1080p is a very good wmv/wma file.but I still remain in DV-avi(AVI)..
That would be my Master Video File..
I also use Roxio Creator 2010..as a back-up application..for upload files..
===
Next would be HD Video..
Your computer would need..a PCIe Video Card..to create HD-video..
..or you will see horizontal lines in the video file--especially with action scenes..
Like a basketball game..lines will appear..
===
Jerky Video--is attempting to edit--compressed video files like wmv/wma..
..its also a sign of hurrying..
There is no hurrying the video editing process..
Also..
Always use the Pause Button--before advancing your video footage..useing the slider switch.

Can someone tell me a good HD camera?
Q. My birthday is coming up and I want a HD camera and 2010+ video editing software. Can someone recommend good one's? Thanks in advance.
My budget is around 200 dollars. I have a windows 7 but I don't know all of the stats for it. I have 4GB RAM, dual CPU's, and a video card. Hope that helps you.

A. HD Camcorders and DSLR Cameras interpolate the video, which means of every 25 frames of video, 4 or 5 frames are taken by the lens assembly; the other frames in between these are filled in by the camcorder inner circuitry, thus giving you not true video. Near impossible to edit, even when you have the Multi port processor computer with the big 1GB Graphics card and a Sound card that is required to edit, view, watch and work with the files these camcorders produce.

Consumer Level HD Camcorders and DSLR Cameras have 4 problems. 1) Blurry, fuzzy, out of focus areas closely around people in videos taken by consumer level HD camcorders. 2) Any movement, even a wave or lifting an arm, while in front of a recording Consumer Level HD Camcorder and DSLR Cameras, results in screen ghosts and artifacts being left on the video track, following the movement. Makes for bad video, sports videos are unwatchable. 3) These Consumer Level HD Camcorders and DSLR Cameras all have a habit of the transferred to computer files are something you need to convert, thus losing your HD quality, to work with your editing software. 4) Mandatory maximum record times - 1 hour, 30 minutes, 8 minutes, 3 minutes four different times advertised as maximum record time for some Consumer Level HD Camcorders and DSLR Cameras. No event I have ever been to is that short. Either take multiple camcorders and DSLR Cameras or pack up with out getting the end of the event on video.

And add the fact that to get a HD camcorder that could produce better video quality footage, one would have to spend in excess of $3500 for that camcorder that could produce higher quality video

What are some good blogs or websites for independent filmmaking?

Q. I want to learn how to make a film so I want to do my own research but I'm not sure what are reliable sources of information. Cinematography, Sound, lighting, etc. Also some good articles that could give me advice on what type of camcorder I should get that wouldn't be too expensive but still produce quality video.

A. Do a search for film shed

What's a good cheap camera for independent filmmaking?
Q. I've been making short films with my old JVC mini dv camcorder for awhile, but I would like to start entering contests. The visual and audio quality is just terrible and I'd be embarrassed to enter anything made with that camera.

So my question is... what is a good, relatively cheap, camera with good visual quality?

and as a bonus question: Are there any programs similar to Final Cut Pro that are cheaper?

A. perhaps a cannon hv20?

Has a similar 24p setting, it is HDV based.

How long until we start seeing cheap, compact 4k camcorders in electronic stores, disgracing cinematography?

Q. and we start seeing $50 cameras on drug store shelves with giant "FULL HD VIDEO!" labels replaced with "4K RESOLUTION VIDEO!"
Yes, quantity over quality.
Make cinematography better by making it trite.
Okay.
Sounds great.

A. A person can buy a $50K guitar and still not know how to play.
A person can buy a Ferrari and they won't suddenly know how to get first place in a race.
Your new adidas tennis shoes with independent suspension springs will cost you $200, but you'll still break your ankle trying to jump the 2" your capable of jumping to dunk a basketball on a full-height hoop.
And with cheap fully-auto digital cameras out there, pictures are getting better over-all, but professional photographers are professional because of them, not because of their cameras.
Cheap gear won't disgrace cinematography, because no one will look at film that is made by "cheap"(lousy, uncommitted) cinematographers.
What people watch will be what is made by the best cinematographers, just as these things always work. The gear is irrelevant.

What are some HD camcorders with the quality of a DSLR camera?
Q. I make YouTube videos and since I have started I've been using my dads Nikon d3100 and it is amazing just the best quality I have come across but I am looking for something with the same exact quality that has a longer recording time, pull out view finder, and auto focus. I can't seem to fine that I recently bought the Cannon VIXIA HF R400 and its okay but definitely not the d3100 the quality of the video just isnt there but it has everything else I want. So I could really use someones help and input on what is the best camera/camcorder for me based on what I desire

A. ALL Full HD video cameras shoot at 1920 x 1080p or use only 2.1 mp of whatever sensor is on the camera

The only thing that a dSLR has going for it, is the actual size of the individual pixels, so under low light conditions, there will be less noise.

If you want theatrical quality video, you need to consider a 3-CCD video camera like those made by JVC, Sony, Panasonic and Canon. For true high quality video, you need to look at some of the new 4K video cameras being made by Sony, JVC, ARRI and Red One.

I am sure you have the skills to use Yahoo Search to find these websites so you can further explore high quality video cameras

Canon XF105 file into Final Cut Pro X format?

Q. I am trying to get my files from my Canon XF105 camcorder ( that are in MXF. format ) into Final Cut Pro X. I am not sure if I need a new conversion software or if I can just use my Canon Utility to do it. However, in the manual it says Canon Utility only works with Final Cut versions of 6 and 7. If I do need a conversion software, which software is the best one to use? If there is a step-by-step process to use Canon Utility for this problem that would be great as well.

Thank you.

A. Canon Utility is acted like a converter, wchih will convert your MXF files to ProRes on the background of FCP X. It certainly works with FCP X, but there is one demerit I don't like. It seems that the faster and more convenient tool degrade my files. So I have to find a converter which can assure the quality of the converted files. One of my friend, a Canon XF305 user, recommended me Brorsoft MXF Converter for Mac. I can't say it is the best, but it is the one I'm most satisfied. It is intuitive and easy to use. The most important point is the great quality of the converted files, almost the same as original. You can try it, if you are not satisfied with the Canon Utilities. It can be easily get from Canon website.

Can't import Panasonic HDC-TM900 AVCHD to FCP X?
Q. When I purchased Final Cut Pro X from App Store, it was supposed to support AVCHD video files directly. But I cant import my MTS videos from Panasonic TM900 into FCP X, why?

A. Don't "Import". Use "Log and Capture" when the camcorder is connected to the Mac with a USB cable and the camcorder is in Play/PC mode. This assumes your Mac has an appropriate RAM and CPU configuration that meets (better yet, exceeds) the minimum requirements for dealing with AVCHD-compressed video. Since you share no information on your Mac, there is no way to know for sure.

Where online can I find a good dvd camcorder?

Q. I am looking for a dvd camcorder online because they are too expensive in stores. I would like a Sony, Panasonic, or Canon one but Ill take whatever works nicely. I cant seem to find one on ebay or Amazon thats in my price range or working. The ones on ebay get up to $300.
Do know of any other site where I can buy nice working camcorders cheap?

A. Nowhere.

There is no such thing as a "good" consumer grade DVD camcorder.

Please adjust your requirements - miniDV tape has best available video quality but your computer requires a firewire port. Flash memory and hard disc drive use USB to transfer the files but you usually need to convert them to a file format your computer can deal with if you want to do any editing.

Consumer DVD based camcorder barely make useful doorstops.

What is a nice inexpensive camcorder for a 13 yr old girl, who wants to record herself and post it on u tube?

A. You can buy a Canon ZR800 Mini DV Digital Camcorder for her. It is 35X Optical Zoom 1000X Digital Zoom 1/6" CCD 2.7" 112K wide-screen...
"The good: Inexpensive; easy-to-use joystick control; 35x optical zoom; above-average color reproduction; microphone jack. " ( i got it from a review site.)
And it is not expensive, I find that a decent deal for it is only $190.

Which video camera do you suggest with these features?

Q. - Two audio inputs.
- Good really sharpness (For uploading videos on the Internet)
- Proper for Chroma key (Not for using in dance or fast moving green screen scenes)
- Can be connected to data video switcher.
- record on memory.
- Less than $ 4000.
What about $1500 to $3500 and recording on tape?

Thank You.

A. Now what do want 2 Audio inputs for? I can have as many audio inputs as I want using this - http://asimplelife.ca/boss.html, hooking it to the single MIC jack on my camcorder.

Best video Quality to be had is shot by MiniDV tape camcorders. To get HD camcorder that could equal that Quality, you would need to spend in excess of $3300 to get that HD camcorder. HDV camcorders make as good as video as a MiniDV tape camcorder.

I use My Canon ZR MiniDV tape camcorders to shoot green screen videos all the time with no issues.

If the Data video switcher had IEEE1394 ports, your in business.

What is the best HD digital camcorder?
Q. I would like one with at least 3 CCD's, awesome zoom, and the ability to buy accessories that will make it possible to make blue ray DVD's. I have my eye on one but it is not on sale in stores yet, and I need it by the middle of March.
I have checked out various camcorder review sites, but they are from last year, and several new camcorders have been released since then that are not on the reviews. I haven't found one that is not out dated.

A. since you don't mention a budget i could recommend the sony hvr v1p.

personally, i am smitten with my v1p. its around US$4000 or so but it's excellent and offers 25p. basically this means it'll do a good job in making it look like film. some seasoned camera ops say it's as good as super 16mm (in the right hands of course!)

i shot a feature with it and i was very pleased. the blow up was surprisingly good.

any budget hd/hdv cam will make bluray discs as they are suited to 1440 x 1080 (and native 1920) resolutions. but to really make a great looking film you can go past the v1. it uses cmos sensors instead of ccd which i think does a better job.

good luck!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?NR=1&featur

or

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2EXKh_aXO

like what do you think a camera would be that has that good quality, and how much do you think it would cost?

A. Here is a video shot using a Nikon D7000 with four different lenses.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rMbBKukJzBk

As you can see, this camera shoots very well in low light situations

Really by the time you buy such a dSLR, the lenses and necessary accessories to make it a viable video camera, you could buy a REAL video camera

http://mauromedia.com/cameras/dslr-shoulder-mount-mauromedia-tech/

Take a look here for real video cameras:

http://www.panasonic.com/business/provideo/ag-ac160.asp Less than the cost of a fully set up dSLR

A better video camera that costs about what a fully set up dSLR will cost you.

http://www.panasonic.com/business/provideo/ag-hpx250pj.asp

What you have not mentioned is whether you have a video editing workstation already. Those can cost an additional $3,500

What is the cheapest video camera with 3CCD chip?

Q. What is the cheapest entry level pro camera that will make recording look more like a film movie and not like some 300 dollar camcorder with a 3CCD chip?

A. The CHEAPEST 3ccd camcorder I could find is the Panasonic PV-GS320. Since it does not have a mic-in jack it would fall off my short list.

3CCD is not necessarily "best". There are many other dependencies... like lighting, camera angles... and total surface area of the imaging chips. If the total surface area of the 3CCD chips is small, a single CCD or CMOS or 3CMOS chip camera will out perform those three CCDs.

If you are making a film, and want it to look like film, you want to be doing 24p... the imaging chip is nearly irrelevant. The Panasonic DVX100B is a good one. Look into the Canon HV20 and the Canon XHA1, too.

And remember, the video and imaging is only a part of the "system". You also need to consider lighting, camera angles, story line, planning with storyboards, audio, sound design, script, make-up, wardrobe, editing, music and lots more.

Can the Toshiba Camileo X200 record in the dark?
Q. I'm getting this entry level camcorder and a deal breaker is if it can't record at night or in the dark. Most cameras have a built in night vision toggle and I can't find anything about that in the description. Thanks so much!

A. It is best to try your support site or your owners manual for help, this site has owners manuals and service manuals, that will asnswer most question. If this does not help try a web search, that will do the trick most all the time if you hang in there, it is all on the web.

Using a HD 720p camcorder, What size SD card should I buy?

Q. Using a HD 720p camcorder, What size SD card should I buy?

I am thinking of buying a Sanyo Xacti VPC-TH1 High Definition camcorder and I dont know what size SD card to buy...

I want to record about 2 hours in 720p so which size should I get?
Is there any rough kind of guide to follow?

A. the camera specs appear to indicated that it is designed for 16 GB memory cards. the battery is good for 200 minutes, and 16 GB is 230 minutes of HD video. However if you plan on using the still photo capability of the camera, that will reduce the minutes of available video. An 8 GB card will be just short of 2 hours of HD video.

Will it be better to invest in a camcorder than a camera?
Q. I'm wondering if I should buy the Flip MinoHD Camcorder, 2nd Generation, or buy a Nikon D3000. I'm new with photography and filming, and its basically just as a hobby that I will be doing this, to make some memories. A part of me is telling me the camera will be better, but I'm kind of confused.

A. It totally depends on what you'd be doing more (photography/filming). If you are able to spend a little more and go for the nikon D5000, you can get a great entry level DSLR camera which is able to take 720p HD Movies, all in one.

How to get good quality sound when shooting a film?

Q. When I always used to make short films I used the crappy camcorders Microphone, and it sounded so mono and just not filtered. What is the best, cheapest way to get Theatrical quality sound? Thanks.

A. Good question- people don't realize how much good sound counts, you can have crappy images and weird editing, but if the sound is messed up it will take the audience out of the story instantly.
Find a cheap shotgun mic ($40) that has an 1/8th plug for the little cameras, and make a cheap homemade boom-pole and windscreen. Have a friend be boom op.
Next step- post sound. 99% of all sound in professional films and videos is recorded in a studio, then edited in- even the dialogue. Use only the dialogue from your on set recordings- edit everything else out then either rerecord (foley) the ambient sounds- footsteps, rustling, birds, etc. in post or find free samples online. If the dialogue is messed up do ADR, or record the actors lines in the studio (a quiet closet) and sync them up. Mix and EQ.
Also don't forget to record room tone on set, its the ambient hum of every location- and it changes with every room or location. After you finish filming just record 30 sec. of absolute quiet- you can then insert that room tone to help smooth over your edits in post- that's how the pros do it.

What kind of external mic do I need?
Q. I have a Cannon ZR40 camcorder and I would like to have an external microphone of some sort for a movie that I'm shooting outside between two people. I want a better quality microphone when It comes to the sound interference outside that the camcorder microphone would pick up. Yet I'm not sure what kind I need. I'm trying to make a makeshift boom pole with the mic. What would I need that isn't too expensive?

A. There are two ways you can go...

1) a Shotgun mic can work well - but it presumes the two people are pretty close to each other. In addition to the mic and the boom pole, you probably want to use something like a Sabra SMM-1 universal shock mount... and a zeppelin (also known as a "dead cat"). Rykote makes a good one - but they are expensive. You may be able to make one. do a search for "zeppelin". Even if there is NO wind that you can feel outside, there is some wind. Since the distance of the mic cable will probably need to be over 15 feet, you want to use a shotgun mic that uses XLR (balanced) connectors and cabling. Since the ZR40 has a 1/8" jack, an XLR adapter will be needed - I would suggest something like those from BeachTek like the DXA-6vu. I don't know if the ZR40 has manual audio control - if not, then the DXA-6vu will provide it - if so, you might be able to get away with just a XLR-1/8" jack cable adapter. On the affordable side, NRG Reasearch makes a nice unit in the SA-568. Audio Technica makes several good ones... they can get expensive. Sennheisers are my favorite to work with.

2) A wireless lavaliere (clip on) on one or both people speaking would also work well and the mics can go under clothing (but not under heavy jackets). Shure and Sennheiser make good ones. They are expensive. You need to tape the mic to the person's chest (hidden) using moleskin or some other adhesive so their skin does not get torn off. And the body pack slides on a belt on their pants. The base stations can be either 1/8" or XLR, so whether you need the XLR adapter or cable will be dictated by the connectivity the base stations need.

What is a good camera for a novice filmmaker?

Q. I'm looking for a quality camera for a novice filmmaker. Something relatively easy to use and hold on my own. Something versatile. But something that will produce a beautiful picture that will look professional.

If possible, I would like to stay under $5,000. And, if possible still, under $2,000. Thank you.

A. Sony HDR-FX7, HDR-FX1000.

Both are miniDV tape based and assume your computer has a firewire port because that is the only way the video will get from the digital tape and into the camcorder in best, high definition, video format.

Don't spend all your money on the camcorder.

tripod
video lights
wireless lavaliere mics
wired mics
steadying devices (shoulder mount, vest stabilizer system, etc.)
cases, cables
optional high capacity batteries from the camcorder manufacturer...

If your computer can't handle firewire, then look at the JVC GY-HM100.

What video camera will work well with Mac book pro?
Q. I have a Sony 40gig hd video camera but it doesn't work with Mac. I would like to buy something under 5 grand. Something that works easily with the mac book pro. I am not a pro buy any means but do enjoy mud and water filming any help would be great thanks.

A. I am guessing you want to get a whole new camera then to work with your macbook pro. The best place to find mac compatible video cameras is going to be on apple.com there are quite a few different choices including a Cannon HG10 High Definition Camcorder which is similar to the sony 40 gig, because it records in hd and has a 40 gig hard drive that it records to. The damage will only be 1,000 dollars, but if you need to buy any video software that is where it gets really expensive. If you are going for a full blown professional camera then I would suggest the Canon GL2 Mini DV Camcorder. It will be enough equipment to record professional and quality video, but will run you 2,800 dollars before tax. Another option for you is to use a av input converter for mac.

What would be a good video camera for a macbook pro?

Q. I'm looking to get a video camera for christmas and want them to be able to be uploaded into iMovie and edited as well. where could I find a video camera for a mac for a good price?

A. "Good price" means different things to different people. What is your budget? Less than $250? $500? $1,000? $3,000? Since camcorders can be over $20,000, there is a very wide price range.

The MacBook Pro laptops have a 9-pin firewire 900 port, they will work with miniDV tape based DV/HDV camcorders. For consumer grade, I suggest Canon ZR960 for standard definition or HV40 for high definition. For "prosumer", the Sony HDR-FX7 or HDR-FX1000. For Pro, Canon XHA1, Sony HVR-Z1, Canon XLH series, Panasonic AG-HVX200 or JVC GY-HM100. Using iMovie, I don't think you want to jump to Red - FinalCut Pro would be more useful.

You will also need a 4-pin to 9-pin firewire cable.

bhphotovideo and adorama are good online sources.

How to import Sony HandyCam videos onto iMovie?
Q. Hi. I am currently trying to import videos from my handycam onto imovie. I have it connected to the computer, and all the cam corder has said for the past ten minutes is "connecting... Do not unplug the USB cable. Do not turn off the power." When I go to iMovie and hit file>import or press the little button with the camera, my video camera does not come up. On the little button thing, all that does is the isight.

HELP please. Thanks :)

A. Handycam is Sony's generic name brand for all their consumer camcorders regardless of storage media type... and miniDV tape, Digital8 tape, flash memory and hard disc drive camcorders all connect differently and have different iMovie requirements.

And if the camcorder is standard definition or high definition makes a difference, too...

I'll assume it is miniDV tape based - if not, re-post your question with the camcorder model information - it will also help to know which Mac you are using and which version of iMovie is on there...

If it is a miniDV tape based camcorder and you want the video off the tape, you need to disconnect the USB cable and use a firewire cable to connect the camcorders DV port to the Mac's firewire port. No, the manufacturer did not put a firewire cable in the box with the camcorder.

Since you did not tell us which Mac, we have no way to know if you need a 4-pin to 6-pin or 4-pin to 9-pin firewire cable. The camcorder's DV port is always 4-pin.

Almost all Macs made in the last 10+ years have a firewire port. The only exceptions are the newest MacBooks and the MacBook Air - all others have a firewire port.

When the camcorder is correctly connected with the firewire cable and in Play or VCR mode (you did not tell us which model Panasonic camcorder, either), launch iMovie, name the project file, select the destination of the file, click create and the iMovie "Camcorder connected" blue screen will appear. Import the video using the camcorder controls in the iMovie window.

If you have a Mac with no firewire port, the only workaround I can come up with is to get another Mac with a working firewire port and an external hard drive. Use this "other Mac" just for the video import - and save the iMovie project file to the external drive. When the importing is done, shut down that "other Mac". Disconnect the external hard drive and connect it to the Mac that will do the video editing. Power the drive and the editor Mac up, launch iMove and edit.

USB will not allow video importing from a miniDV tape based camcorder. USB-to-firewire cable/hub/converter/adapters will not work.

I have a dvd that doesn't work properly, should I get it fixed?

Q. I have a camcorder dvd and was faulty before I finialized it. I can send it to someone who says can fix it and do editing and put the readable scenes on a new dvd. This will cost some money of course. Should I do this or should / can I do this myself. I have tried to do it but it will not read the whole faulty disc. Any suggestions or should i just get it done by someone who knows how?

A. Try this first http://www.handbrake.fr/ this is a video converter. You might try this, it works for pictures, not sure about dvd videos, http://www.recuva.com and try a deep scan. These programs are free.

And just to make sure that you know how to download a minidvd,
If you have a mini dvd camcorder.
You will have to finalize your dvd in the camera and then put the dvd in your computer's DVD burner (top loading only) and then you will have to convert the files (I downloaded http://www.handbrake.fr/ file converter free) and import them into your editing program. Use the HELP feature in your editing program to learn about editing. Usually you would import your videos and drop them in to the timeline, add transitions, menus, music, etc. Once you are ready to burn, your project will be burned to a different DVD and you can file the original away.

How do you lose the camcorder Icons when burning to DVD?
Q. I have a JVC GZ-MG37U camcorder. The DVD burner is a Sony. When I burn to DVD the Camcorder Icons are on the DVD. I would like to only see what I am trying to record. Thanks for any assistance.

A. That shouldn't be happening, try calling the camera peoples tech support.

Is there any way to transfer video from a samsung sc-d382 min dv camcorder to my iMac without using iMovie 09?

Q. I have a firewire 400 cable with a 400 to 800 adapter. My iMac is the 27in. version. I can record to iMovie 09 using the camcorder and firewire cable, but cannot send video from the camcorder to iMovie 09. Can I use a video coverter, Quicktime Pro, or other built-in app?

A. When you are moving DV-format video from the miniDV camcorder to the computer, the computer Imports - or Captures - the video. DV format video is compressed and the camcorder's processor does the decompression and the video is saved to the iMovie (MOV) file format.

You are correct, the miniDV tape based camcorder does not "send" the DV format video to the computer - the computer takes the video from the camcorder.

QuickTime Pro won't do what you want, either.

Final Cut (Express or Pro) will behave the same way iMovie does...

I am not aware of any application that will just stream the DV-format video data (no importing, no decompression) straight from the camcorder to the computer. This is not platform-spacific - the same is the case for Windows video editing for miniDV tape based camcorders, too. Importing is a real-time activity when working with miniDV tape.

The only way I know of to do what I *think* you need in order to do what you want is to record the DV format video straight to a specialized external hard drive - Focus Enhancements makes the FireStore series. This way, the DV forrmat video data is written directly to the FireStore drive when you connect the camcorder to the FireStore with a firewire cable. When video aquisition is complete, power everything down, connect the FireStore external drive to the iMac, power up, and work with the DV format files... Sony has a external video storage unit, too - but I don't know if it will work with your Samsung miniDV camcorder. These specialized external storage devices are not inexpensive...

A regular external computer hard drive with no specialized DV-capture firmware will not work.

why are my iMovie film clips out of sequence?
Q. when I import video from my sony handycam digital disk camcorder into imovie, the film clips are always out of sequence. for example, when recording a basketball game, I get the clips showing up in imovie out of sequence from the actual game. is there something I can do to correct that?

A. Maybe you don't have the right codecs installed.

What is the best software to edit videos and put on DVD for a camara that creates m2ts files?

Q. I have a Sony Camcorder and right now I am converting the m2ts files that it creates to the supported format for pinnacle studios. The conversion takes a long time so I am looking to skip the conversion step.

A. I think your trying to create a "classic" dvd, possibly with menus? The problem is that your m2ts files are probably high definition, and old fashioned DVD is not. Your software has to reduce the resolution of your video to convert to standard DVD "vob" files, which can be a slow process. But you may not necessarily need to reduce the definition of your files to an old outdated format (and why would you want to?)?

Most newer DVD and BluRay players recognize video files with the HD type compression format (AVI files compressed with either h264, xVid, etc...). In other words, if you use a conversion program to instead convert your files to HD avi, they may play directly in your player by just burning them as files onto a DVD disc. A good (and free) program that does this easily is the freeware program Freemake. It will will combine, merge, and save multiple files into a single HD file if desired. Think it will also burn them for you onto a DVD. Check the following two links out, think they'll help:

What's a good camcorder for recording at a concert?
Q. I'd like HD quality (at least 720 pixels), but as long as the video quality is good.
My main focus is the audio quality. There will be A LOT of screaming.

Never been to a concert before but I wanna be prepared.

What camera do you use when you want to record at a concert? :)
They don't sell DVDs..?

A. Sony HDR-CX260V High Definition Handycam 8.9 MP Camcorder with 30x Optical Zoom and 16 GB Embedded Memory (Black) (2012 Model)
