Whats the best video camcorder for low light filming in the $500-$1000 range?

Q. I shoot videos weekly for my job, it's all done inside and we always have lighting issues. What is a good camcorder to do inside low light videos?

A. Something in the Canon HF R range. Or... rather than spending on a camcorder, buying lights and using them for your "productions" would be less expensive.

What is the best camcorder/camera for low light situations?
Q. I plan on doing some YouTube videos in the future, but the problem is that my room is kinda dark, and my cellphone is terrible when it comes to dark areas. Are there any cameras for $200 or under for low light situations?
If not in my price range, anything not too expensive is fine.

A. Your question #1: What is the best camcorder/camera for low light situations?
Response: Any camcorder with a large lens diameter (to let light in to the camcorder/camera) and large imaging chip (to process what little light comes in through the lens when it is dark.

Your question #2: "Are there any cameras for $200 or under for low light situations?"
Response: No.

"not too expensive" means different things to different people.

Consumer grade camcorders start at the low end with small (less than 30mm) diameter lenses and small (less than 1/6") single imaging chip. As the price goes up, the lens diameters and imaging chips get larger. At around $400, the lens diameter is around 37mm and the imaging chips can get as large as 1/4". At around $800 the lens diameter is around 43mm and the imaging chips approach 1/3". At around $1,200 the lens diameter is around 58mm and the imaging chips are around 1/3". As you continue up the price spectrum to high-end consumer (sometimes called "prosumer") camcorders, $3,000 finds 72mm lens diameter with 3CCD or 3CMOS 1/3" imaging chip arrays - these do quite well under low-light conditions.

So... what can you do if you can't afford a camcorder/camera that can behave well under low light conditions? It depends what you are capturing to video, but one relatively easy way (assuming you will be editing the video with a half decent editor) is to add LOTS of light so your room is no longer dark - then, using your editor, make it look dark... This is call shooting "day for night".

When you go this route, use whatever camera/camcorder you want - and make the investment in lighting and a decent video editor - not a camera/camcorder. For $200, assuming your computer has a fast CPU, 4 gig RAM or more and lots of hard drive space - Sony Vegas is affordable and a couple or three worklights from the hardware store like
http://www.amazon.com/Voltec-08-00210-500-Watt-Portable-Worklight/dp/B004ZMUHBG
would be plenty.

Looking for a reasonabally priced camcorder to record golf swing?

Q. I am looking to purchase a camcorder to record my golf swing. I am not looking to spend $3,000 on something like the Minolta Swing Vision camera you see them using on TV with the 4000 frames per second. Does anyone have any recommendations for camcorders they have used to record their golf swings that are reasonably priced? Thanks!

A. The ONLY consumer cameras that even approach what you want are a few of the higher-end Sony consumer camcorders that have the "smooth slow record" feature. Be advised that even though these camcorders are considered "high definition", when the smooth slow record" feature is invoked, the video quality is degraded (and no longer high definition).

How can I capture live video from a camera into PC at 300 FPS?
Q. I have a camcorder and a camera which can be connected to the PC. Is there a software that allows me to capture live video from the camcorder directly into my PC at 300FPS? Adobe Premiere allows 30FPS max.
Thanks.
The reason I need this is because I want to record myself performing a golf swing. The club will be traveling at over 100mph and I will playback the video in ultra slow motion.

A. sorry, you're going to need a high speed camera first. consumer cameras don't have the frame rate to do what you want.
check out the link below it's just up your alley as it demonstrates capturing a golf swing... plus it records onto a memory card easily transferable to pc..

What is a good camcorder for a documentary film?

Q. I am 16 and plan on filming a documentary. Since I am 16 the camcorder will have to be in-expensive. I'd say under $900. I'd like it to be HD and have plenty of memory. If you could please leave links to the camcorder it would help a lot. Thanks for any help!

A. I would consider Canon VIXIA HV40 HD HDV Camcorder
* HDV format delivers high-definition video to miniDV tape
* Genuine Canon 10x HD video lens; SuperRange Optical Image Stabilizer
* DIGIC DV II image processor; 24p Cinema Mode, 30p Progressive Mode
* 2.7-inch Multi-Angle Vivid Widescreen LCD
* HDMI terminal for easy, one-cable connectivity to your HDTV

What is the best camera and camcorder combo?
Q. Is there a combo that has best of both worlds (for this black friday)? For camera, I prefer at least 10 MP, takes good night photos. For camcorder, I prefer HD and minimum of 30X optical zoom, and digital stabilization.

A. its easy for a camera to take good night pictures, its called a flash. it comes free with the camera.

no digital camera that takes high quality pictures comes (or even has available) with a 30x zoom. that is because a zoom of that range is only practical for micro sized CCD sensors, like the 1/8th inch ones used in cheap consumer camcorders.

imho the best compromise cameras currently available are the "point and shoot" pocket digital cameras. my favorite was the Olympus Stylus 550wp. built in flash, ruggedized case, large CCD, waterproof, HD video. only 3x optical zoom and no stabilizer. you don't need a stabilizer at 3x unless you are falling down drunk.

How do I add videos to my computer from my camcorder?
Q. How can I add videos from my Sony Camcorder to my computer? It uses a tape/cassette and it has 3 ports that are yellow, white, and red. Also an S-Video cable port. Please help me!!! It is a digital handycam. A digital 8 DCR-TRV310 NTSC.

A. Well, since cassettes are generally outdated, pretty much the only way to transfer your footage onto your computer is to use a capture card. That's what I use to transfer tape data onto my computer. And on the plus side, you can also use it to transfer virtually any type of video data, including DVDs.

Here's a link to the one I have (copy & paste it), but search around, there are tons of them around the internet & in stores, etc. at many great prices.

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000VM60I8

Once you have a capture card, use the following setup:

1. Connect your capture card to your computer, via its USB cable.
2. Connect the device that contains your video to the capture card.
3. Use the capture card's included software to record the video. If it doesn't come with software for this, download Golden Video (free). Copy & paste:

http://download.cnet.com/Golden-Video-VHS-to-DVD-Converter/3000-2194_4-10841546.html?tag=mncol

Also, keep in mind that some tape-using camcorders can connect to computers/transfer their videos via Firewire, USB, etc. so check your camera for that first.

Hope that helps.

A. Hey buddy!

Try out the Flip camcorder. It's a pretty nice quality camcorder and it's affordable for your price range. Gets nice reviews too!

What are the best settings for Sanyo xacti TH1 for indoor use?
Q. I recently bought a Sanyo Xacti TH1 and its indoor recording with low light leaves much to be desired.

Can anyone suggest a combination of settings which would help the image come out clearer.

I have tried altering the ISO and filters and have had only limited success.

A. Small lens and small imaging chip = poor low light behavior.

Just because you can see in dim light does not make the lighting "good enough" for the camcorder to see well.

The best "setting" will be to add more light. Inexpensive worklights on a tripod available at the hardware store are one way to do that.

Mr Safety has good suggestions for affordable lighting...

What should I look for when purchasing a new camcorder?

Q. My wife and I, in preparation for our future family, are looking to purchase a new camcorder. We would prefer that it is HD, however we are somewhat restricted when it comes to price. We would like to keep it under $500. We are looking for something with great video quality and reliable. So far we have played around with some friends small pocket type cameras (the bloggie and flip cam) and were not fans of this type of setup. We are looking more or the hand-held type of camera. Any suggestions what to look for, or stay away from? Thanks for the help.

A. hd, works with editing software you have, and has good reviews
:)

Low cost camcorders that are good quality?
Q. I need a camcorder to record my little sisters this Christmas. I was looking online and found some under $500 bucks, but I was worried about picture quality. Can you find a good one in the $500 and under range? If so can you state which one you own. Thanks!

A. I recommend Canon FS100 Flash Memory Camcorder, this camera to take quick videos of the kids and the places we visit while on vacation and at school events. In the two weeks we have taken about 4 videos and all of them came out just great. The snapshot feature is ok, if you have nothing else, but I prefer a digital camera for my shots.

This model is very small. I bought a case for it that fits on my belt and I can carry it right next to my digital camera if I want. My wife likes the camera because it has an EASY mode and she feels very comfortable with that feature.

If you are looking for an inexpensive camcorder that gives great SD quality and does not use tapes then this model should be on your short list. For awhile I thought that my digital camera movie mode was pretty good until I tried to zoom in on a play at school and it just could not get the shot. Camcorders are made for movies and it shows.

I also bought a 16GB sdhc card from Amazon and it has worked perfectly.

Q. Whats a good camcorder for skateboarding?
Needs:
Good is low light
High quality video and i mean HD silky smooth video
Awesome audio
Good battery life
Easy to use w/computer
Umm my budget is around 500.00 and please give me some examples.

A. i suggest Panasonic HDC-SD60K since your budget is 500 dollars..

Technical Details
2-11/16" widescreen LCD
25X optical zoom lens (digital zoom to 1500X)
High-definition video resolution: 1920 x 1080

What is the best cameras/camcorders for skateboarding?
Q. Looking within probably 250-450 dollars (US) for a good camera, with multi-shot and the like, or a good camcorder. Any suggestions or anyone who could lead me to a site that has suggestions would be great.

A. If you are really on a budget and want the best quality for the money, check out the P&S Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ28 which has more features than most pro DSLRs that require auxiliary lenses not even equal to the single initial full-range lense that comes with the FZ28. It is reviewed at:

http://www.steves-digicams.com/2008_reviews/panasonic_fz28.html

It just came out on November 4, 2008.

It's an all-in-one 10.1 megapixel DSLR camera which includes (i) built-in image stabilization; (ii) HDTV quality video [Quicktime]; (iii) a 18x zoom [27 - 486 mm (35mm equiv.)] "Leica" lense for nature photography; (iv) up to 0.39 inch macro option; (v) up to 6400 ASA; (vi) takes up to 380 pictures per 120 min. battery charge; (vii) has a "burst speed" of 13 fps; and sells new for $270 at amazon.com.

Here's an actual handheld picture of the moon:

What do these camcorder video quality selections mean?

Q. I recently bought a JVC Everio camcorder and there are different selections in the video quality category. They are "LS/LE/SSW/SEW/SS/SE". I don't understand what these different selections mean. So if someone could give me a break down of what each individual quality type means, that'd be great :)

A. That little booklet, white with a generic picture of a camcorder in the same series as yours, says"Basic User's Guide" on it...is not just extra packing material.

Likely (you did not give your particular model number) it will explain all this, look on page 13, more on 25, and technical descriptions on page 30.

In practical use, set to the highest resolution/lowest compression and leave it alone. If you are sure the final product will only be used on DVD, you will get a little more recording time by lowering your resolution from the HD formats down to the best Standard def format (SSW).

Why is my video quality so horrible on the computer compared to the camera? (Read Description)?
Q. I have a Panasonic HDC-SD9 Camcorder. The video quality is bright and awesome on the camera, but when I upload it to my computer, it's dark and poor quality. I have to go through the memory card because it won't let me simply plug the camera into the computer when uploading videos, could that be the problem?

A. Lights, lights, lighting is key. Learn how to adjust exposure. Does your computer have better than the following specifications, if not, do not expect to be able to play or edit that footage.

What is the easiest/best camcorder on the market that will transfer to DVD and computer in a cinch?

Q. I want to be able to video my 3 year old growing up and so I will tote the camcorder around and don't want to be so heavy and bulky. I want to be able to put it in my purse and go.

A. A couple months ago i was doing this same kind of questions because i also whas going to buy a cam for my dauthers birth and after plenty of reading and comparing diferent models side by side here is what i remember....
Ok Cameras that use the miniDV tapes most have a lot of features but after the taping is done and you whant to make a DVD for grandma ,if you have 45 min of filw in the cam it will take you the same amount of time to transfer to your computer.
Meaning 30min on tape 30min to transfer into a computer so you can edit and make a DVD.
Its slow and all but quality is suposed to be better and the blank tapes cost a bit though they are coming down but still you have to have blank ones so you have less space in your bag..
Then you have the miniDVD.
Ok the DVD are a bit cheaper than the tapes but one of the cons of this type is that after you record and the dvd is full now you have to finalise the dvd and that alone depending on the model and manufacturer can take from 1min to 3min so anything else that hapens in that tape you miss it . Transfer to computer is a bit faster. Still have to keep more blank dvd with you.
Then you have the one i decided for the cam with hard drives.
These are smaller than the other 2 and no need for extra expense in any kind of blank media. Transfer to computer is easy and and after you are done you decide what you whant to burn on dvd.
In my opininon go with the Hard Drive kind of cam, they cost a bit more but it pays itself back in no time with not having to buy blank media all the time.

Hope this help a bit.

Price Drop in VIXIA Camcorders Approaching New Release?

Q. I'm looking to buy a camcorder in the VIXIA line, and noticed that the new versions tend to be released in January of each year (correct me if I am wrong).

Now I plan on buying one from amazon.com, which already has drastic price cuts on them, but I was wondering if they will go down any more as they try to clear out stock for the new models in 2011.

Can anybody tell me if prices at amazon.com of this series might drop any further, or if I could just go ahead and get one now? I don't have a problem with the price, but if they got lower I wouldn't mind waiting.

Thanks!

A. It's hard to know what amazon will do with older models when new releases come in. But you can place a item on your Wish List and you will get a red/yellow warning notice if that item has increased or decreased in price since you placed in on your list. But there is no way of knowing the future of that item.

But it can be extremely frustrating when trying to chose a camcorder knowing that a newer model is coming out. But sometimes the newer releases (of the same model) are not always well sought after. A couple of examples: Canon VIXIA HV40 is the latest model camcorder of the HV series (HV20, HV30, and now HV40). But the only deference between the HV30 and HV40 is that the HV40 can record at 24fps. Many users and shoppers feel that the price deference between the two isn't worth the 24fps so they save money buying the HV30. Another example is the Canon G11 (digital camera) which is the latest step up from the G10. But the G10 is a better camera and even costs more than the G11. My understanding is that there was some kind of change in the manufacturing process (parts, labor, etc..) that prompted a change, thus a downgrade. Some say the G10 was just too expensive for the targeted market (users). You will need just to weigh what is most important to you between current models and future models.

Can I use any Camcorder as portable media player ?

Q. Can I use any Camcorder as portable media player ? Are there any specific models in specific brands(Sony,Panasonic,..etc.)? All I want is to listen to music & songs while wearing earphones and to watch videos apart from capturing photographs and videos. If there are any, please can anyone give me some names of those models? That would be great....Thank you.

A. No!

camcorder will only play a specific file type, and that will have to be video and using the correct codec. you cannot just bang a MP3 or a Divx video on it and expect it to play. it at bes will not recognise the file, and not play it and worst you can actually damage the camcorder.

You are better off using a cell phone, or something that will play video and music leaving your camera alone

Where can I buy a 2k videocamera?

Q. A video camera that shoots in a higher resulotion than 1080p, also is there any for under 400$?

A. Red and Panavision make digital camcorders with 2000-4000 lines for use in the movie industry. $400 won't buy a battery for one of these puppies.

Why do people from other countries think that everyone in the USA is rich?
Q. My relatives in Central America are forever asking for money. And when I say "I'm broke", they don't believe me. And they say "You can't be broke, you make way more than we do." It drives me crazy!
I would like to have more feedback from non-US citizens. I would like to know why THEY think Americans are rich, please.

A. After turning off the computer, I figured out I left out the main aspect. So I did some heavy editting.

Answer from Brazil
First of all, most people don´t realize there is a difference between tradable and nontradeable goods. Tradeables are esily exported/imported good while nontradables...well. For ex.: A scisor is tradeable a haircut is not. Some food items are tradeable but some aren´t. A meal served at a a restaurant isn´t. Your rent and facilities aren´t. Well, you get the idea.
Your familly might know how much you make and convert it to there local currency and imagine all they could buy. Unfortunately, you can only make that sort of money living in the US (and paying thru, there).
In a poor country, wealthy people can still afford the tradeables (which cost about the same in USD all over the world). For example, a Honda Civic starts at about USD20000 in Brazil and is considered a luxury car. Nontradeables, like a meal at a fancy restaurant can cost, can be as low as USD30 per person.
Labor is a nontradeable and therefore is priced very cheap. In Brazil, a household with monthly income of over R$8000 (a little under USD 4000) is considered rich for the advertisement association. So you can figure out that, things like cars, camcorders, computers and other nontradeables are completely out of reach for poorer people.
When your parents see you with all these stuff, they associate your life style with that of the rich folks they know. It's common to hear from poorer people who have relatives in the US (as ileagals) to brag about how amazing they have it, b/c they have a car, a computer, etc. What they don't know is how expensive all the other stuff cost.
Another reason is unrealistic word-of-mouth.
A lot of my countrymen feel that they can make a lot of money in the US and acctually try to immigrate ilegally. It sometimes works b/c they live a miserable life there and are able to save and return w/ a lot (for local standard). This furthers the impresion that life is easy there. And whats more, people like to talk about their success, not failures. So these immigrants tend to boost-up the good things and downplay the bad things.
Hope this helps you understand your relatives and helps you on how to make them understand your life a little better.

Ever been in a long time in Japan? Japanese culture?
Q. So, I'm going to Japan this January. I'm curious with the Japanese cultures. Anyone ever been there for a long time? What should and shouldn't do when I'm in a japanese family? Btw, I'm going for a homestay. Thank you

A. Learn a lot about life there first; for many basics try

http://www.japan-guide.com/e/e622.html
http://www.thejapanfaq.com/FAQ-Manners.html

Bring a good digital camera, or even better, camcorder, since you can take a lot of photos and video that in the future you will treasure dearly.
Before you leave, you should prepare some gifts for your host family.
Generally you want to bring something that represents where you are from. Maybe bring a small gift for each member of the family, and one gift for the family as a whole. Nothing extremely expensive is necessary. They will also return the favor and if you give very expensive gifts it puts the pinch on them to give something of equal or slightly higher value.
Some small picture books or calendars, posters, ashtrays, chocolates, fragrant bath salts, t-shirts, liquor, sauces or salad dressings like Ranch, pure maple or berry syrups, colognes, jams, baseball caps, coasters, nice soap or shampoos, lotions, cosmetics, nuts, flavored coffees, keychains, postcards, etc. would be great.
I often bring some tea from a local supermarket - it is cheap, light, and there are now several varieties of green tea that Japanese have never tried, such as with mandarin orange, jasmine, earl grey, fruits, raspberry, lemon, ginseng or mint.
Somewhat less elegant but something quite practical I often bring for friends in Japan is a large bottle of aspirin, which costs several times (I am not exaggerating) what it
does in the US/Canada.
Be aware though that in Japan 4 and 9 are "unlucky" numbers, and especially older Japanese tend to be superstitious, -- avoid giving any sets of 4 or 9.
Of course, where possible, avoiding very fragile and very heavy objects is desirable.
It is very likely that your family will treat you very well if not lavishly, especially when you first arrive,
such as taking you to some expensive restaurants, so make sure to bring something more formal to wear.
Enjoy your homestay.

What is a good camcorder for sporting events?

Q. I need a camcorder for recording my daughters soccer games. any recommendations?

A. Panasonic HDC-TM 900 or Sony Cyber-shot DSC-HX9V

Can you help me determine if this camcorder is a good buy?
Q. I need a camcorder and I'm looking at one with a 10x optical zoom. I don't know anything about camcorders so is this a good number for the optical zoom? Also, is the digital zoom number important when purchasing a camcorder? What number optical and digital zoom would be the best to get?

Please help me....I need to buy a camcorder by next Friday. Thank you!

A. What's your budget?
What are you recording?
Is it to upload to the web or watch on an HDTV?

As for the zooms, optical is the only one that matters. Digital zoom simply blows up the size of the pixels causing degradation in picture quality. On my old (circa 2001) camcorder, it gives the option to turn the digital zoom all the way off or limit it to 10x and 20x- I always leave it OFF.

As for what optical zoom number to aim for, it depends on what you're recording. A kids soccer game that you're 50ft+ away from, 10x is good. Indoor birthday parties, 5x would do.

You're budget is going to determine quality, but I would definitely try to get a 720p or 1080p HD camcorder, which range from $120 for a micro camcorder to $500 for a real 1080p camcorder.

720p SD card based micro camcorder:

1080p entry level real camcorder

supposedly on sale at Costco for $349 right now

While Canon makes the best consumer 1080p models

Is it safe to walk into Best Buy and buy a camcorder and assume that Windows Vista will work with it?
Q. I really want a camcorder, but I am worried that either the camcorder or the software that comes with it will not work with my Windows Vista computer. Will Best Buy allow me to return the camcorder if Vista doesn't work?
I am leaning toward the Hard-Disc Drive camcorders, but I'm not looking to spend more than $500 on it.

A. One item you are neglecting... If you decide to get a miniDV tape based camcorder, does your computer have a firewire 400 port? That is the only way the video will import from the camcorder to the computer.

Not all hard drive based or flash memory based camcorders or the manufacturers have updated their USB drivers to work with Vista. Pick the camera - then check the camcorder discussion forum at CNET.com. Post the question.

If all seems OK, THEN buy the camera.

PLEASE DO NOT BUY A DVD BASED CAMCORDER. The video quality - especially for editing on your computer - is terrible.

Why is that most of the attention concerning HDV camcorders goes to Panasonic and Sony and not JVC?

Q. Eventhough this HDV camera has 1/3"ccds, has interchangeable lens and can record in 720p for less price?

A. Are you talking about the HD110/ HD200/ HD250? Well then, I totally agree with you. They are excellent cameras, and in my opinion, the best HDV cameras on the market. It's actually one of the only HDV cameras that offers a 24p mode as well (Z1U, XH-A1, G1, and XL-H1 don't)

Sony, Canon and Panasonic have always received more attention. period. Anything else is considered a bad camera, and even JVC has a reputation of not being the best company... in some cases that generalization is true, but in this case, it's a horribly wrong misconception. The JVC HD series cameras are excellent! In one review, the HD110U's picture clarity was compared directly to that of the XL-H1. the HD110U is also very popular on low bugdet films and documentaries, as well as various news stations.

On the flips side, there has always been the argument that the JVC HD series cameras can't do the higher res 1080i. That is, of course true, for that matter, what other HDV camera can do 720p? The thing with HDV cameras is that they cannot switch between recording modes like some solid state cameras can do (it can't be 1080i/720p switchable), but if I were to choose, I think I would go with 720p. Cuz as a filmmaker, 720p is much better for its aesthetics as Progressive rather than Interlaced, as well as for space reasons. It's a common misconception that 720p is not "real HD" or that it is "not enough". Well, quite a few indie films as well as documentaries are shot in 720p just fine...720p also saves you a ton of memory when it comes to editing....Actually, the HD series cameras CAN shoot 1080i with the additional purchase of a JVC Hard Drive recording unit.

Like you have said, its Interchangeable lens mount, and professional shoulder-mounted ergonomics give the JVC HD cameras an edge over the HDV competition... Solid State cameras (like Sony's XDCAM or Panasonics DVCPro line) still have the upper hand however.

So, um yeah... the JVC HD series totally powns! So don't anyone else tell you any different!

Is there a digitial camera that shoots good movies as well?
Q. I'd like to get my wife a digital camera that she could shoot movies on as well. Not a replacement for our camcorder, but something that will shoot above average movies when we don't have camcorder with us, or it's just easier to bring around like at amusement parks or petting zoos.

A. Yes, there is. It's called the Canon TX1.

It's a 7mp camera that also shoots 720P high definition video. It als has image stabilization and a 10x zoom lens.

Here's a review of the camera here:
http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/CanonTX1/

Essentially, you get high quality stills and better than average camcorder functions at 1280 x 720 resolution, 30 fps.

What camcorder would be suitable for producing wedding videos?

Q. I have looked around and don't believe i need a 'pro' level camera, i do plan to start a Business filming wedding videos, as long as the camcorder is hd and not a cheap rip off how good would the picture quality be?

A. I agree with Udda and lare... but neither actually answered your question...

1) Camcorder suggestions: Sony HDR-FX1000 or similarly priced. These have pro-grade lens and imaging chip systems, an only a 1/8" stereo audio input. If you insist, then a Canon XF300. You need the large lens and large imaging chip systems because you don't know at what venues you will capture video. The large lenses and imaging chip systems provide you a wider lighting range (i.e., lower light levels, but still acceptable video capture) that lesser camcorders will not allow.

2) We assume you already know about lighting, steadying devices (tripods, Steadycam vest systems with counterbalanced articulated arm, camera crane, dollys, etc.) becasue capturing video with the camcorder handheld is incorrect step #1.

3) We assume your computer can deal with importing and dealing with and exporting/rendering the final project video to whatever the client needs - optical disc, VHS tape, Blue Ray disc, external computer hard disc drive, etc in whatever video format needed.

4) We assume you have the audio portion covered so you know that multiple wireless lavaliers and shotgun mics and external recording devices are all things with which you are familiar...

Just so you know, it is easy to have standard definition video from a good camcorder look better that high definition video from a consumer-grade camcorder... it is all about video compression...

What camcorder is capable of HD recording and quality sound, but at a low price?
Q. I have a $100-$200 budget and I'm looking for a camcorder with HD recording. Thanks

A. HD Camcorders and DSLR Cameras interpolate the video, which means of every 25 frames of video, 4 or 5 frames are taken by the lens assembly; the other frames in between these are filled in by the camcorder inner circuitry, thus giving you not true video. It looks like this -one frame from the lens assembly, 7or 8 from the electronic circuitry, one frame from the lens assembly, 7or 8 from the electronic circuitry, one frame from the lens assembly, 7or 8 from the electronic circuitry, one frame from the lens assembly, 7or 8 from the electronic circuitry, from front to back of the video. Near impossible to edit, even when you have the Multi port processor computer with the big 1GB Graphics card and a Sound card that is required to edit, view, watch and work with the files these camcorders produce.

Consumer Level HD Camcorders and DSLR Cameras have 4 problems. 1) Blurry, fuzzy, out of focus areas closely around people in videos taken by consumer level HD camcorders. 2) Any movement, even a wave or lifting an arm, while in front of a recording Consumer Level HD Camcorder and DSLR Cameras, results in screen ghosts and artifacts being left on the video track, following the movement. Makes for bad video, sports videos are unwatchable. 3) These Consumer Level HD Camcorders and DSLR Cameras all have a habit of the transferred to computer files are something you need to convert, thus losing your HD quality, to work with your editing software. 4) Mandatory maximum record times - 1 hour, 30 minutes, 8 minutes, 3 minutes – four different times advertised as maximum record time for some Consumer Level HD Camcorders and DSLR Cameras. No event I have ever been to is that short. Either take multiple camcorders and DSLR Cameras or pack up with out getting the end of the event on video.

MiniDV is currently the most popular format for consumer digital camcorders. MiniDV camcorders are typically more affordable than their HDD and DVD counterparts. Each MiniDV tape will typically hold an hour of footage at normal recording speed and quality. MiniDV tapes are available for purchase at not only electronic and camera stores, but also at drugs stores and grocery stores, making them easy to find while your on vacation. There are literally hundreds of MiniDV camcorders available; both in standard and high-definition. And add the fact that to get a HD camcorder that could produce better video quality footage, one would have to spend in excess of $3500 for that camcorder that could produce higher quality video

any recommendations for hd dslr or camcorder under $1,000 without the rolling shutter effect?

Q. i want a camera that suffers the least from the rolling shutter effect. i know all cameras under $1,000 do but which one is the least affected. and which are better dslr or camcorders? in that regard i know the canon 60d is pretty bad at the rolling shutter effect but is it better or worse than hd camcorders?

A. I think your rolling shutter effect can be best solved by Canon EOS Rebel T3i 18 MP CMOS Digital SLR Camera and DIGIC 4 Imaging with EF-S 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS Standard Zoom Lens

http://www.amazon.com/Canon-Digital-Imaging-18-135mm-Standard/dp/B004MN00C4/ref=sr_1_4?s=photo&ie=UTF8&qid=1332967154&sr=1-4&tag=faumioe-20

The EOS Rebel T3i has high-speed X-sync (“X-sync” means the fastest shutter speed that can synchronize with a flash burst at the moment the shutter is fully released) up to 1/200 sec., which dramatically increases the range of photographic expression. Other features are:

- Includes EOS Rebel T3i digital SLR camera and EF-S 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS Type II Lens
- 3.0-inch Vari-Angle Clear View LCD; Built-in flash; Full HD movie mode at 1920 x 1080 resolution
- DIGIC 4 Image Processor; Scene Intelligent Auto mode and Picture Style Auto incorporate EOS Scene Detection System
- Compatible with full line of Canon EF and EF-S lenses
- USB 2.0 terminal; Video out terminal: NTSC/PAL selectable; SD/SDHC/SDXC memory card slot - 18.0 megapixel CMOS sensor; Eye-level SLR viewfinder

What should I use to video short films and vlogs?
Q. I would like a camera with very good quality, HD, and possibly under 1,000 dollars. I'm not sure if I should get a DSLR for this or a camcorder. Please help me out. I have no clue what is good and what is not.

A. To be honest, an HD camcorder is quite enough as DSLR is mainly for professional video makers. If you just want to get own videos or movies, HD camcorders could keep high quality as you say, what's more, it's not that expensive as DSLR.

But if you want to make professional videos, and manage several video editors, such as Sony Vegas, Windows Movie Maker, FCP X, iMovie and so on, you can choose DSLR.

Hope my answer helpful and Good Luck to You

What "affordable" camcorders are compatible & work best with iMovie '11 & standard Macbooks?

Q. I want to know what current camcorders that are affordable work well with iMovie 2011. A camcorder where you don't have to download any streaming or video convertor programs.

A. Good zoom works very well for a day approaches and bright places Soledad excellent, but for low light if you need some accessories to give greater illumination to the area of ''shooting. Very light which allows for smooth loading and the quality of video and pass video to the computer is simple and makes working with the format and work with iMovie iFrame makes it very simple.

cupcake app for g1 whats so good about it?

Q. I haven't downloaded the cupcake app for my g1 yet. Everyone one on forms say cupcake is the thing to have......I just got my g1 not to long ago so I don't know what's hot, so what's the big deal with that app?

A. Cupcake is not a app, it's a whole update for your phone. It includes a lot of features including faster and cleaner pictures, a video recorder, a video player, a touchscreen keyboard so you don't need to slide it open, and a big widget update so you can put things on your home screen like self updating weather and all that.

Here is a nice website with pictures, http://lifehacker.com/5272021/cupcake-adds-camcorder-touchscreen-keyboard-and-more-to-android .

You should be automatically prompted to update your phone, this will install cupcake for you. I have a good feeling you probably already have it, if open up your apps menu and see the word Camcorder then yes you have it.

What do you/I buy for a guy friends 18th?
Q. One of my close friends is having his 18th soon and im so stuck on what to buy! I know he will be happy with anything he gets but i want it to be something he can remember or something tht will be used more than once...Please help! x

A. Well concentrate on things he loves to do (hobbies, etc)

Maybe he has a car. Get him some things that will take care of it... such as wax, washing liquid, shammys. Or something like a plate for the front of his car with a protective thing over it. Maybe some covers for his seat and steering wheel and a keychain.

Sports guys: if he plays a sport get him a piece of equipment that you know he will use. If he's big into watching a certain sport get him a hat with the team logo, a rug, etc.

He will be going to college soon right? Get him something YOU KNOW he will use. Get him a chair to put in the commons area. Some decorations for his new school. Get together with some of his other friends and get him something big like a fridge, or a microwave. Perhaps get him some decorations some things that would help him stay organized when he goes away like a Pencil stand that holds pencils, rulers, scissors etc. He's goin to need cleaning supplies and something to carry his laundry in. Maybe get him a travel bag to put his stuff in. Or a digital photoframe to put pics from his birthday and other days (get a camera and make sure you take pics at his birthday!!)

If he's a techno dude get him Sunglasses with UV Polarizing lenses and Integrated MP3 Music Player( http://www.techgiftsdirect.com/product_p/sun-01.htm )., a camera, or a music recorder thing, or camcorder.

If he likes to read then get him some books, a light to attach to his books in the dark, maybe a bookmark as well.

If he likes to write get him a special notebook and pen. Get a book to help him with ideas and exercises for his skills.

Best cheapest Canon Digital SLR Camera that can perform HD video?

Q. I prefer Canon Digital SLR Camera's compared to typical, cheaper handheld consumer camera's because I prefer a professional approach to my work. If you can suggest any other camera with these abilities, that's great. I'm looking for a digital camera (more preferably Canon Digital SLR) that can take amazing pictures as well as camcorder(HD) abilities. Also at a reasonable price, and I'm talking about below the 600-700 dollar mark(or in between).

A. I would suggest the Canon EOS Rebel T3 12.2 MP CMOS Digital SLR with 18-55mm IS II Lens and EOS HD Movie Mode.

It has a very reasonable price, $591.53, and has great reviews on Amazon.

There is more information about this camera, and others on my photo website, here:

Should I buy an HD camcorder or a digital camera with HD video?

Q. My friends and I want to make short films and I was look for any suggestions on any good cameras that can shoot in HD. I noticed a lot of people I know have been filming with a Canon 7D, but way too expensive. I'm looking to spend anything around $200. Iwas thinking of getting a Kodak z950. I really want to get a digital camera because the last camcorder I had was too noisy and would be noticable in our movies. Any good suggestions? I need this asap.

A. If you want to take high quality videos (1080p), then you need a camcorder, not just a digital camera. I have used both, trust me, there is a difference. Unless quality isn't an issue, go for the camcorder.

A noisy camcorder would be from either 1: the tape being written on. or 2: poorly put together lenses that are loud as they focus and zoom. I can't say I've ever had a noisy camcorder problem though.

Here is what I use: Kodak Zi8
It only costs $179 on Amazon.

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B002J9G60S?ie=UTF8&tag=robert0c-20&linkCode=as2&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=B002J9G60S

I actually used the Sony HDR-CX110 HD (cost me $600) camcorder for a while but then returned when the quality was barely better than my little Kodak Zi8.

The Kodak Zi8 films in 1080p at 30 fps or 720p at 60 fps (the second one is great for sports or filming while snowboarding).

For short films is a must have over the flip since it has an external mic input and the flip does not. This ALONE makes the Kodak Zi8 worth it. Also, it's only $179 on Amazon. Search YouTube for videos made with the Kodak Zi8 if you want to see the quality for yourself.

What is the best make of camcorders?
Q. I'm wanting to buy a camcorder but I'm not very experienced in this type of things. From experience, what was the best make of camcorder you had ever come across?

A. Hi Liberty, and welcome to Yahoo!Answers:

Since you say you are new to this area of camcorders, and from reading your other Y!A Question on this topic from yesterday, there really isn't one "best" brand for you, without more information on what sort of things or situations in which you need to use the camcorder. [Referencing your Y!A discussion at: http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=Ath0ytOPHqvNrbSy1JfVkZnsy6IX;_ylv=3?qid=20120101123304AA29Y6w ]

Also, your personal budget limit (how much you wish to spend on this initial purchase) is an important factor. There are HD camcorders ranging from under-$100 USD to thousands of dollars.

A wide choice of features and lenses also makes a difference. (Filming indoors, close-up, for example, versus outdoors sports or wildlife from a long-distance will make a big difference in the lens and features you might want.)

Sony and Panasonic are the two main brands the pro's choose, and tend to be more expensive, even with their consumer models; Canon and JVC are other brands with professional and consumer models, but with a bit more-affordable pricing. All are reliable, and have a wide choices of changeable batteries with long charge-life. You might stay away from cheaper models and brands without changeable batteries. When you are travelling or vacationing and can't swap batteries, it's a major problem when a dead battery won't let you capture a memory.

If you told me you were a snow-skier or snowboarder, or ATV/dunebuggy enthusiast, then I'd recommend a totally different brand (like a GoPro) that's small & ruggedly made for those activities.

Also what brand computer(s) you own and whether you plan to do a lot of editing and/or uploading to sites like YouTube and Facebook, are important to know. Many consumer camcorders are very "user friendly" with one-touch upload/share buttons that make web-compatible video uploads easy. Some camcorder brands work better with PCs than with Macs.

Feel free to use the Y!A "Action Bar" to add Additional Details to this Question, so we can give you a better Answer.

hope this helps,

How do i import videos from a memory card on a Canon NTSC ZR200 camcorder to imovie?

Q. PLEASE HELP ME. please...
i have a Canon NTSC ZR200 camcorder and a mac with OS X software.
i want to upload some videos i made on the cameras MEMORY CARD to the computer.
i tried to use a firewire AND usb (not at the same time).
none of them work.
please help me. im desprate. please.
thank you.

A. Not directly.

Take the card out and use a card reader to copy the files to the Mac.

Download and install MPEG StreamClip and convert the very highly compressed video to MOV or MP4 format that iMovie can deal with.

When the conversion is complete, quit MPEG StreamClip and launch iMovie. Drag the converted video to the capture area or the clips pane (depends on the version of iMovie).

Warning: The original video on the memory card is REALLY compressed. When you fill a monitor or TV when playing back, the video quality will be terrible. This is not unexpected.

If you want high quality video, then record the video to the miniDV tape. That is DV-format and can be imported to iMovie with the firewire cable connecting the camcorder's DV port to the Mac's firewire port - and the camcorder in Play mode.

How can I use my Sony Handycam HDR-CX150E instead of my iSight on Mac?
Q. I know the Sony Handycam is a camcorder, but I would really like to use it as a camera on my macbook pro instead of my built in iSight. My macbook pro is a Mac OS X 10.6.8 and my Handycam is a Sony Handycam HDR-CX150E. Please help!

A. You don't. The Sony HDR-CX150 and your Mac has:
USB which does not stream video;
HDMI which provides video out - but the Mac does not have an HDMI input built-in;
AV-out which provides video out - but the Mac does not have an AV-input built-in.

Generally, high quality video streaming can be handled using a camcorder that supports a firewire connection in the Mac. These are typically miniDV tape based camcorders. There are no consumer grade camcorders (including your CX150) that have a firewire connection.

What is a good camcorder for home movies?

Q. I like to make home movies, mostly horror movies, but I will make a movie out of anything really. I want something HD. What is a good camcorder for me?

A. I think you should go with Canon VIXIA HF S200 Flash Memory Camcorder
* Records crisp high definition video directly to two removable SD memory cards
* Genuine Canon 10x HD Video Lens
* Canon 1/2.6" 8.59-Megapixel Full HD CMOS Image Sensor
* Canon DIGIC DV III Image Processor
* Dynamic SuperRange OIS corrects a full range of motion

how do you make home movies with a camcorder?
Q. I am new to camcorders. Step-by-step instructions to make home movies using a camcorder, please.

A. My own experience is that you have to do a little bit a a time.

I assume you already have you footage in your camcorder and know how to get the video into the PC.

First, capture the footage to PC. Best if you have scene detection if you're using miniDV..Choose a video editor software.

Second, organise and sort your footage according to the scenes.Delete bad footage. If there are stills, include them. Maybe put them in the same folder. For my vacation videos, I put the different scenes in different folder, even if it's from the same vacation. I do this to avoid being overwhelmed with all the footage..

Third, gather background music. Something appropriate for the occasion.

Fourth, fire up the video editor. Just import stuff only you want to edit at the moment. If you can import in separate 'bins', like in Premiere, you can import everything in but make sure everything is in order.

Fifth , edit away. Shorten scenes that is overly long and unnecessary.
In Premiere, you can gather the footages in different Sequence, eg. sequence 1, sequence 2...etc.

Lastly, render all the different sequences out if you're planning to use a DVD-authoring software, or you can render everything straight from the video editor to DVD, choose the simple DVD layout and buttons etc...

Last word, show off your work and impress all your families and friends.

Question about a very old camcorder (1989). Can you help?
Q. I have a very old camcorder from 1989. It's a Panasonic OmniMovie VHS PV-420. Believe it or not it still works pretty well. Fast forward to 2012 and I find myself with about 30-two hour VHS tapes, some of which I'd love to upload to my iMac to bring these priceless moving images into the 21st Century.

I'm about to spend around $100 on an Elgato Video Capture device in order to complete this project. From my research, it looks like the best in a group of products on the market to achieve my goal (I'll be using the camcorder as my video playback source since my VCR "left the building" about 5-yrs ago). However, my research also tells me that if my camcorder has a feature called "video pass-through" I would be able to transfer my video to my iMac WITHOUT the need to buy the Elgato or any other video capture device.

So the million dollar question is: How can I determine if my Panasonic OmniMovie VHS PV-420 has "video pass through?"

A. You will need a capture device like the Dazzle or Elgato, there are also expansion cards that can do this. One other option is to get a VHS/DVD deck that can copy the tapes to DVD pretty much automatically. The DVDs can then be archived on a hard drive (as they are not much more durable than the tapes themselves).

The Dazzle or other capture device will give you files you can edit. The VHS-DVD decks simply copy the tape to the disk, editing the disks is problematic for several reasons.

Plan for the storage, at least 5 gigs/ hour.

What camcorder should I buy for online videos?

Q. I want to start putting up family videos on a website. I'm looking to buy a good camcorder under $300 that I can use to upload videos to my computer. I just need to know what type of camcorder I should use. Or if you have some brand suggestions that would be great too. Thanks!

A. i recommend Sony DCR-DVD650 DVD Handycam® Camcorder

what brand of camcorder/video camera should I buy?
Q. I want to buy an affordable camcorder (under $ 300) that I can use to take home videos and EASILY transfer them to my macbook and edit them on imovie. Sound quality is also very importnat to me. Other than that I don't need anything fancy. Does anyone have any personal recommendations? Also, what would be the advantage of buying a camcorder as opposed to an ipod touch that takes videos?

Do I use a camcorder for making a film, or just use my phone?

Q. I have a Samsung Galaxy S4 and it is kind of fancy, but I would like to purchase a camcorder because my phone already has a ton of files, pictures and videos on it and it would be a bit of a mess trying to compile what I want together. If you say I could just use my phone, why do you suggest that? If you say I should buy a camcorder, how much should i spend and where could I buy one? Note: I am definitely not a pro, or looking for a pro camcorder. Just something simple to use, good quality and cost effective.

A. If your are worried about taking up space on your phone, just buy a micro SD card and store all of your film files on the card.

If you dont do that, then you can pick up a digital camcorder capable of 720p video at target and maybe walmart for under $100.

How do you extend the recording time of a cell phone camcorder?
Q. I have a Samsung SGH-A687 phone, & I want to record videos on it. But every time I record a video, the longest I've been able to record one is 30 seconds. Any way to extend the time I have to record videos with my phone?

A. if you want longer recording times, put the phone in it's normal carrying place and use a camcorder. phones are for calling people .

How do I upload videos from the camcorder?

Q. Hello, I have recently acquired a Samsung SCL810 camcorder but I don't exactly know how to upload videos to my computer. I have an S-video cable hooked into my computer and into my camcorder but It didn't come with a CD-rom or any interfaces. Im not really looking any "special effects" I just want to upload me playing guitar to youtube. Any advice would be greatly appreciated Thanks! Oh and I am on a serious budget so please no $200 something crazy interfaces please!

A. The Samsung SCL810 is an analog, Hi8 tape, based camcorder. There is no "direct" connection from that camcorder to a computer. This is not a digital camcorder. Digtal tape based camcorders use miniDV and digital8 tape.

You did not tell us which computer, but chances are about 99.99% that the s-video connection is video out only. Not 2-way and not inbound to the computer (many laptops use this to connect to a projector).

To get video from that camcorder into the computer, an "analog/digital converter" or capture card is needed. Connect the camcorders AV cables (s-video is video only so remember to connect the audio cables if you choose to use the s-video connection - but don't connect the yellow composite video connection to anything) to the A/D converter or capture card. The low-end A/D converters connect to the computer with USB, the better ones connect with firewire; the capture cards use a PCI slot. See Roxio, Hauppauge, Pinnacle (Dazzle), Canopus, Black Magic.

What camera/camcorder should I buy for YouTube?
Q. I'm going to start a YouTube channel and I was wondering what kind of camera/camcorder I should get? That one of my questions should I get a camera or a camcorder and what's the difference? I would like 1080p and and super slow motion which is 120fps but 60 fops would do. I need to be a ble to attach a shotgun microphone to it, and definitely need to be able to attach a tripod to the camera! There are so many cameras/camcorders out there that it is just to hard to look through all of them. Please answer I'm trying to get it ASAP.

A. Lol, never buy a flipcam, it seems like you are just starting out so don't worry about slow motion and shotgun microphones because those are really expensive, start out with something decent and work your way up. Look at some cameras here and pick up one that you are comfortable with spending your money on: http://store.sony.com/c/Sony-Handycam-Camcorders/en/c/S_Video_Camcorders .

If you want something with a microphone input and no slowmotion then get this http://store.sony.com/p/Sony-16GB-Full-HD-Projector-Camcorder/en/p/HDRPJ380/B#features.

If you want a slow motion camera but no mic input, then get this http://www.amazon.com/Canon-PowerShot-Stabilized-Wide-Angle-3-2-Inch/dp/B0075SUJ4W/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1374878910&sr=8-1&keywords=slow+motion+camera

If you want both, get this http://www.amazon.com/Sony-HVR-HD1000U-Definition-Camcorder-Optical/dp/B0010T7J18/ref=sr_1_6?ie=UTF8&qid=1374879041&sr=8-6&keywords=slow+motion+camcorder

Don't worry all of them support tri-pods.

What is the best software to edit videos and put on DVD for a camara that creates m2ts files?

Q. I have a Sony Camcorder and right now I am converting the m2ts files that it creates to the supported format for pinnacle studios. The conversion takes a long time so I am looking to skip the conversion step.

A. I think your trying to create a "classic" dvd, possibly with menus? The problem is that your m2ts files are probably high definition, and old fashioned DVD is not. Your software has to reduce the resolution of your video to convert to standard DVD "vob" files, which can be a slow process. But you may not necessarily need to reduce the definition of your files to an old outdated format (and why would you want to?)?

Most newer DVD and BluRay players recognize video files with the HD type compression format (AVI files compressed with either h264, xVid, etc...). In other words, if you use a conversion program to instead convert your files to HD avi, they may play directly in your player by just burning them as files onto a DVD disc. A good (and free) program that does this easily is the freeware program Freemake. It will will combine, merge, and save multiple files into a single HD file if desired. Think it will also burn them for you onto a DVD. Check the following two links out, think they'll help:

How do I turn a firewire port on an iMac into a video input from a camcorder?
Q. I running ProPresenter software on a 2012 iMac with two firewire ports. I want to use the live video integration and want to run the HDMI output from my camcorder into the firewire port. But I can't get it to be recognized as a video input? I am not sure if I need a special piece of hardware, but have a firewire to HDMI converter.

A. No doable, IEEE1394 port or equivalent only take DV signals, not HDMI signals.
