What is the best digital video camera with the highest optical zoom (x70 or greater)?

Q. Im looking to buy a video camera with high optical zoom, high quality. I have been looking at a couple but I would like some suggestions please. I perfer x70 optical zoom or better. Thanks!!!

(please include camera name, optical zoom, pixels, other details, price, purchase location)

A. There's a good reason that professional camcorders don't offer anything like that level of zoom - it's all but useless. The images are going to be dim, noisy and wobbly. Why do you need such extreme zoom - there may be a better solution. Oh, and pixel counts are meaningless for camcorders (they're almost meaningless for digicams, too).

What would be a good video camera under 150 dollars?
Q. I want a second video camera with
- a really good zoom
- a 720p definition

A. Sony Bloggie. its one of the most amazing video cameras I've ever owned!

Where can I buy a good camcorder with IR night vision still currently manufactured?

Q. I'm looking into buying a camcorder for all purposes but some of those purposes involve filming in the dark. Unfortunately, I wasn't able to find any good camcorders with night vision still being manufactured and I would like the model to also be fairly new (2010-2011). If you know of any an answer would be greatly appreciated.

A. a check of amazon.com for "nightshot" turned up a number of new camcorders, mostly in the Sony DCR HCxx series. this is miniDV. Aiptek, a Chinese brand claims to have a similar feature but i wouldn't recommend their cameras. Sonystyle has no nightshot cameras listed as available.

what are the best camcorders that have night vision out there that i can buy at best buy or sears type stores?
Q. I am looking for a camcorder with night vision. Night vision i am looking for is something that can work in complete dark. I would like to be able to buy it from best buy or sears or any other stores that sell camcorders. So if anyone knows brands and makes of some camcorders let me know thanks.

A. Sony HDR-CX500

Which is the simplest and easiest software for video capture from a camcorder?

Q. Which software / program is best to use for transfering video capture from a camcorder to the PC ?

A. If you have Windows XP, why not use Windows Movie Maker.

It comes free with Windows and allows you to capture, edit and place titles on you downloaded or caotured movies.

It a nice program and it costs nothing what better thank that.

I have a Sony DCR-TRV510 Digital 8 video camera, how do I get video to my macbook?
Q. I am pretty sure I will need an iLink firewire cable, but what sort of freeware video capture software for mac would you recommend.

A. You need a 4-pin to 6-pin firewire cable to connect the DV port on the Digital8 camcorder to the Mac's firewire port. Firewire, i.LINK, DV and IEEE1394a are all the same thing.

iMovie or iMovieHD will import that video. It was most likely bundled with your computer when you got it.

What is the best mini camcorder out there?

Q. My husband purchased a Sony Bloggie Touch and it does not focus very well and is a bit grainy. We're looking for a mini camcorder (HD) which will also allow us to use it in areas with poor lighting. Any suggestions?

Many thanks in advanced!!
No we are not planning on using it in the bedroom.. Bored much?

A. Consumer level HD camcorders have 3 problems. 1) Blurry, fuzzy, out of focus areas closely around people in videos taken by consumer level HD camcorders. 2) Any movement, even a wave or lifting an arm, while in front of a recording consumer level HD camcorder, results in screen ghosts and artifacts being left on the video track, following the movement. Makes for bad video, sports videos are unwatchable. 3) Mandatory maximum record times - 1 hour, 30 minutes, 8 minutes, 3 minutes – four different times advertised as maximum record time for some consumer level HD camcorders. No event I have ever been to is that short. Either take multiple camcorders or pack up with out getting the end of the event on video.

With a MiniDV tape camcorder, record 60 or 90 minutes ( camcorder settings), 90 seconds or less to change a tape and record for 60 or 90 more and repeat till you run out of tapes.

You can get a Canon ZR960 for $250. It is a MiniDV tape camcorder, has a Mic jack. You need a firewire (IEEE1394) card ($25 to 30) for the computer and a firewire cable (less than 10) to be able to transfer video to your computer. To say this is not HD, think about this. It would cost in excess of $3500 to get a HD camcorder that could equal the video Quality of a $250 Canon MiniDV tape camcorder.

can you use a coleman xtreme sports waterproof HD wearable helmet video camcorder to record normal videos?
Q. If I get this, can I use it to record normal videos, like of my friend singing and stuff for youtube?

A. The camcorder does not care what the subject is. Start recording and point the camera at the subject.

Video and audio quality may not be ideal. Just because the camera is being used to capture something other than sports stuff is not going to have the camera stop working...

What is the best Hard Drive camcorder on the market?

Q. I was planning on buying Sony SR47 (60 GB) hard drive camcorder, but I did not read too many good reviews on it.
($399.99)
Any suggestions??

A. Just to be clear - the Sony DCR-SR47 is an entry level, consumer grade, internal hard drive based camcorder. It is nowhere near "best".

Personally, I do not recommend internal hard drive based camcorders because of their known problems with vibration, loud audio, and high altitude... they can stop recording under these conditions. Flash memory and miniDV tape do not sffer from these problems. As well, HDD camcorders can be VERY challenging when the camcorder breaks and the video has not already been transferred to a computer. The removable media used by miniDV tape and flash memory can be used by other camcorders so access to the video is easier after camcorder failure.

The video file formats are the same when comparing HDD and flash memory - assuming the lenses and imaging chips are the same, the video quality from these camcorders is the same. The only difference is the storage media. Standard definition DV (used by miniDV tape based camcorders) is much less compressed and results in better video quality - again, assuming the lenses and imaging chips are the same size as the "equivalent" HDD and flash memory camcorders... MiniDV tape based camcorders require your computer to have a firewire port. HDD and flash memory camcorders use USB to copy the files - but many times those files need to be converted using a utility like MPEG StreamClip before a video editor can deal with it.

I strongly suggest you stay with miniDV tape (Sony DCR-HC62, Panasonic PV-GS320, Canon ZR960) or flash memory (Canon FS100) and skip hard disc drive camcorders. The ZR960 and FS100 have a mic jack (but no manual audio control) that other camcorders in this class do not have.

What is the easiest/best camcorder on the market that will transfer to DVD and computer in a cinch?
Q. I want to be able to video my 3 year old growing up and so I will tote the camcorder around and don't want to be so heavy and bulky. I want to be able to put it in my purse and go.

A. A couple months ago i was doing this same kind of questions because i also whas going to buy a cam for my dauthers birth and after plenty of reading and comparing diferent models side by side here is what i remember....
Ok Cameras that use the miniDV tapes most have a lot of features but after the taping is done and you whant to make a DVD for grandma ,if you have 45 min of filw in the cam it will take you the same amount of time to transfer to your computer.
Meaning 30min on tape 30min to transfer into a computer so you can edit and make a DVD.
Its slow and all but quality is suposed to be better and the blank tapes cost a bit though they are coming down but still you have to have blank ones so you have less space in your bag..
Then you have the miniDVD.
Ok the DVD are a bit cheaper than the tapes but one of the cons of this type is that after you record and the dvd is full now you have to finalise the dvd and that alone depending on the model and manufacturer can take from 1min to 3min so anything else that hapens in that tape you miss it . Transfer to computer is a bit faster. Still have to keep more blank dvd with you.
Then you have the one i decided for the cam with hard drives.
These are smaller than the other 2 and no need for extra expense in any kind of blank media. Transfer to computer is easy and and after you are done you decide what you whant to burn on dvd.
In my opininon go with the Hard Drive kind of cam, they cost a bit more but it pays itself back in no time with not having to buy blank media all the time.

Hope this help a bit.

How much waste would an independent accounting agent find if they audited the government?

Q. We keep hearing about debt ceilings, deficits, sequesters, budget cuts, and we're constantly being threatened with shorter school days and fewer public services like cops and firefighters if we don't vote to support higher taxes. But I wonder how many BILLIONS in waste we would fine if we were to hire the best accounting company in the country to audit the federal government? How much ridiculous WASTE do you think they would find?

Here are just a few examples:

* Washington spends $25 billion annually maintaining unused or vacant federal properties.

* Government auditors spent the past five years examining all federal programs and found that 22 percent of them — costing taxpayers a total of $123 billion annually — fail to show any positive impact on the populations they serve!

* A GAO audit classified nearly half of all purchases on government credit cards as improper, fraudulent, or embezzled. Examples of taxpayer-funded purchases include gambling, mortgage payments, liquor, lingerie, iPods, Xboxes, jewelry, Internet dating services, and Hawaiian vacations.

* Federal agencies are delinquent on nearly 20 percent of employee travel charge cards, costing taxpayers hundreds of millions of dollars annually.

* The federal government owns more than 50,000 vacant homes.

* Members of Congress have spent hundreds of thousands of taxpayer dollars supplying their offices with popcorn machines, plasma televisions, DVD equipment, ionic air fresheners, camcorders, and signature machines — plus $24,730 leasing a Lexus, $1,434 on a digital camera, and $84,000 on personalized calendars.

Can I bring my camera to a concert?
Q. I bought tickets to go to a concert in 2013 and I printed out my tickets and on it it says: No cameras/recorders. And by asking if I can bring my camera I'm not trying to make it irrelevant, but don't people bring their cameras to concerts all the time?
It's at the PNC Arena in Raleigh, NC & the concert is for One Direction.

What will happen if I do bring my camera?
Any idea?

A. For some concerts, they do allow you to bring cameras/camcorders. It will say if it's allowed on the ticket. But in your situation, you're not allowed to because it says it on the ticket. You could sneak your camer in without getting caught(usually hard to do). But if you do sneak it in then you could take pictures and record the concert. But when/if you get caught, they'll kick you out of the concert.

What is the best camera to use for photography and video recording at concerts?

Q. I really want to buy a camera that's really good for taking pictures at concerts, (probably outside) and recording. I have some FujiFilm 14 mega pixels camera now, but I mean I want a REALLY nice camera. I was looking into Nikon and Canon cameras but I don't know which one would be good for video recording too. I'm not really too concerned about the price, but under 4,000 would be cool!

A. First of all, you may not be allowed to bring a camera into the venue, I'd check first.
You might get away with smuggling it in, but personally I hate the possibility that I might either have my camera confiscated, or I won't be allowed inside.
Next problem is that concerts are a low light situation, usually also coupled with much movement as well as a fair distance from the subject.

All up, that makes it EXTREMELY challenging. The only hope of half decent concert photos are good DSLR cameras and even for those you need very good and very FAST lenses.

Small P&S cameras have tiny little sensors, so they don't do well with low light situations.
Concert photos are often blurry because there isn't enough light, so the shutter speed is too slow to hand-hold it, even worse when you add the movement of the performers to it.

You could try raising your ISO, but that will add noise to your photos.
You could try using your little flash, but it can't reach very far, and won't do you a whole lot of good other than lighting up the back of the heads directly in front of you.

I'm afraid there are a number of good reasons why the pro's carry around huge, expensive cameras, lenses, and lights.
It would be lovely if a tiny camera could do it all, but the reality is that small P&S's just can't handle concert situations very well. Some places do allow small P&S cameras (but no DSLRs). The reason for that is because they KNOW you will never get any decent shot with a little P&S.

However, I do realize that some of us a lot easier to please than others, so perhaps what is totally unacceptable to me might be fine in YOUR eyes.
If you can't have a good camera with you, at the very least make sure you learn how to you use what you have, so you can make the most out of it. Read your manual several times, attend a class, read some books on photography - it will help a lot.
If you're not interested in learning much, at the very least learn how to turn off the flash. Those tiny on-camera flashes only reach a few feet, so all you do with it is illuminate the bodies in front of you.

As to sound - there is a good reason why the audio pros carry around a lot of very big and very expensive gear. Even a good camcorder can only do so much in that regard - let alone a little P&S still camera! Don't expect miracles - don't even expect anything you'd ever want to listen to again.

Is the sony ericsson vivaz pro HD recording good for concerts?
Q. Previous phones and cameras i've used at concerts to record, the sound comes out very bad. I can't even recognise the song that was being played. Does HD quality do a better job with the loud music recording?

A. Whatever your purposes in converting an AVCHD camcorder video, you can get the method here, so just know how to do it.

you can google Aunsoft Sony Camcorder Column to get it.

cheapest professional video camera?

Q. I need a professional video camera for under $300. It's ok if it's used, I just need one that's cheap, yet almost t.v show quality. Any brands, names, links to sellers?
And also, is a GoPro considered a professional camera?

Thanks!

A. Gopro isn't really professional...it's TECHNICALLY HD...but the framerate is 30 and the BIOS blurs it a bunch.

Look for a camcorder that has 1080p resolution, 60 frames per second and good color.
A good nightshot would help out aswell. You will NOT get TV show quality for ~300. For that you will either need a real, studio cam(4000+ used) or a DSLR camera rated for video(500-1000)

Live Video Streaming Online with a Video Camera?

Q. I'm planning on live streaming an event online in a couple of weeks, and recently I've decided on switching from a webcam to an actual video camera. Problem is I have NO IDEA how to connect a video camera into the USB port of a computer to work as a webcam. Do i need an adapter? Plz help! Thx for your input.

A. First off, very few HD camcorders can Live stream video through a USB port. It all depends on what your live streaming, how many cameras your going to have and many more things. If doing this with a single camcorder, A MiniDV tape camcorder hooked by Firewire to a IEEE1394 port can live stream video no problem, I know, I own 3 of those camcorders and do it daily. Going with Multiple camcorders, you would need a tricaster - http://newtek.com/products/tricaster-40.html and camcorders that could hook by the AV ports on them.

What videocameras or camcorders can be used as a webcam?
Q. I'm looking to start video broadcasting VIA live stream on the internet,.. and frankly all the Logitech etc "webcams" leave allot to be desired in terms of picture quality and sound.

Does anyone make a camcorder or videocam that can be used via firewire or USB 2.0 as a webcam?

A. Hello
I am sorry that nobody here was able to answer your question. personally I don't know how to answer this question but you can try this
TenDollarAnswer.com
You can ask any type of question.. They charge you but its cheaper then calling an expert IMHO.. The best part is you get your money back if you are not satisfied.
Hope that helps.

Are there any good video recording apps for a sprint android that has a pause/resume button?

Q. Okay so i spent MONTHS trying to find a good video recording app on google play store that will let me pause the video and resume it. I'm trying to make a short film but I need an app like tht to get started! Please help me!

A. You don't need a pause and resume button - learn to use a video editor. Trying to make the film in the camera is pretty well guaranteed to result in a very, very poor film. And to answer your question directly, I don't believe there are any such apps - camcorders using file structured storage just don't work that way.

cupcake app for g1 whats so good about it?
Q. I haven't downloaded the cupcake app for my g1 yet. Everyone one on forms say cupcake is the thing to have......I just got my g1 not to long ago so I don't know what's hot, so what's the big deal with that app?

A. Cupcake is not a app, it's a whole update for your phone. It includes a lot of features including faster and cleaner pictures, a video recorder, a video player, a touchscreen keyboard so you don't need to slide it open, and a big widget update so you can put things on your home screen like self updating weather and all that.

Here is a nice website with pictures, http://lifehacker.com/5272021/cupcake-adds-camcorder-touchscreen-keyboard-and-more-to-android .

You should be automatically prompted to update your phone, this will install cupcake for you. I have a good feeling you probably already have it, if open up your apps menu and see the word Camcorder then yes you have it.

What camcorder is good for snowboarding?
Q. My friends and i like to snowboard and we always wanted to take videos of each other snowboarding. We were always reluctant to buy a camcorder cause they always seemed fragile andnot able to handle the cold temperatures. Is there a camcorder that is durable enough for these conditions?

A. it depends. i saw in APRIL the kodak Zx1 is coming out in hd, the second pocket hd camcorder after the Kodak Zi6. it is said to be mud and water resistant, but not like submerged in water but like in the rain. i dont know if id work for snow, but it will be $150 . but now, there is now the Creative Vado HD or just the creative vado. the crative vado is 86dollars on amazon, and HD one is about 190 dollars. those both have a flip out usb. ther ius also the flips, but i dont like those as much because of there low memory and battery life. and last there is the kodak Zi6 for 150 rite now with a flip out usb, and can be bought anywhere. so there are a few good small, pocket camcorrders and i hope u have fun making videos with them!!!

how do you turn on the night vision mode on a samsung digital camcorder?

Q. i tried everything.. going to every menu setting.. but there is no application for a nightmode setting .. id ont think.. i need to film my new puppy sleeping in night mode for a documentary and i cant figure this out!! the camera is a small samsung digital camcorder .. please help!

A. Not all cameras have "night vision" if there is no switch or setting then it probably doesn't have it.

Leave a light on your puppy will still sleep, and do it that way, when my dog was a puppy the house could fall down and she would still sleep, Puppies seem to turn everything off when they are asleep

Good luck

How can you shoot ir night vision with a dv camera that does not have a night mode?
Q. The digital video camera picks up infrared lights, like you can see the ir light from a remote control. But the dv camera does not a night vision mode. How can I add night vision to see ir (the invisible light)?

A. You can try adding an IR emitter...

Since you did not tell us which camcorder, we have no way to know if they will work. Chances are high they will not.

What would be a good software and camcorder for someone getting into videography?

Q. Im taking my interest in movie editing further and plan to make a business out of it. i have played around with windows movie maker but need something more detailed. Im trying to figure out what type of software is really good for somebody in my situation who is just starting out. I have researched some and looked at reviews but would just like more opinions. I also would like opinions on digital camcorders if you have them. Thank you

A. Software is easy: Avid is what the big boys generally use. A close second and also used by professional editors is Adobe Premier as part of the larger Production premium pack, or the ultimate pack. If you are a student (HS or College) then Adobe is a great choice because of their huge 80% discount for students and teachers.

The camera depends on the type of work you are doing, intended audience, locations, etc.
Do not even bother with consumer HD cameras, learn about the different formats and you will see this is an evolutionary step backward in quality.

Ideally, you would get a HDV camera like the Canon XH A1S ($4000) at a start.

If you can not afford the XH, then right square between the consumer HD and Pro HDV is good-old standard def MiniDv Pro-sumer cameras like the Canon XL and GL series. The GL-2 is still available new for about $2500. Both are frequently on e-Bay with the XL going just under $1000 and the GL-1 and GL-2 going for $500 and $800 respectively.

When you get to where your time is valuable, you will also want a purpose built computer for editing. HDV is here and it does not require a huge upgrade form standard def, but plan on $2000 if you can build it yourself.

What AVCHD quality setting should I record in?

Q. I just bought a new HD camcorder (Canon Vixia HG20) and I plan on recording videos to edit and then upload to YouTube and burn to DVDs. I have the following bitrate options:

-- Long Play 5Mbps
-- Standard Play 7Mbps
-- High Quality 12Mpbs
-- High Quality 17Mpbs
-- High Quality 24Mpbs

I want my videos to have the excellent quality without going overkill. Can anyone recommend the best quality setting to shoot in for YouTube and DVD.

A. i suggest the High "Quality 17Mpbs" as you said for getting good quality without killing your hard drive and you tube AVCHD for me is quite irritating to edit so beware

Best of luck!

and happy filming! =D

A. 1080p means the image is high quality because each frame is made up of 1,080 tiny lines, one on top of the other (imagine drawing 1,080 lines accross a page of paper from top to bottom). Normal television images are made up of 575 lines (USA) or 625 lines (UK).
The 3.2 megapixels probably refers to the amount of dots used to make up the still image when taking a photo with the camera, ie- 3.2 million dots. To give you an idea, most modern mobile phones can take a picture with that detail, a decent digital stills camera these days uses 10 megapixels. However, the quality of the still imaging does not really relate to the quality of the video image. A HD 1080p video image should be excellent.

What flash based camcroder should I pick up?
Q. I'm heading to D.C. next month and I wanted a camcorder to record the whole trip. It will also be used to capture a podcast, that to this point has been audio only. My requirements:

Linux Compatible
HD (1080p)
Under 200$ more towards 100$
(optional) LANC jack, so I can plug in an external microphone

A couple of years ago this would have been impossible, now I think it might be do-able. Thanks for the answers!

A. LANC is not a mic input. LANC is a wired remote control for zoom, focus, photo and power.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/LANC

The least expensive camcorder with a LANC port is the Sony HDR-HC9. It also has a 1/8" (3.5mm) stereo mic jack and manual audio control. It is a miniDV tape based camcorder that does 1080i HDV format high definition digital video capture.

1080p camcorder's in your price range are typically "pocket camcorders" with small lenses and small single imaging chip. The resulting low-light behavior is typically not very good. Generally speaking, they record to either AVI or MOV highly compressed h.264 formats. Whether this is "Linux compatible" is sort of important - but what matters more is if the video editor you are using can deal with the video format. I am not aware of any camcorder in the "pocket cam" range with a mic jack (and most certainly none have a LANC port) - but you can check the Sanyo Xacti lineup or the Kodak Zi8. Even if they have a 1/8" mic jack, they do not have manual audio gain control so loud audio will likely cause a very muddy audio (and static - "peaking") to be recorded because of the dependency on the auto-mic gain circuit.

What is the best camera and camcorder combo?

Q. Is there a combo that has best of both worlds (for this black friday)? For camera, I prefer at least 10 MP, takes good night photos. For camcorder, I prefer HD and minimum of 30X optical zoom, and digital stabilization.

A. its easy for a camera to take good night pictures, its called a flash. it comes free with the camera.

no digital camera that takes high quality pictures comes (or even has available) with a 30x zoom. that is because a zoom of that range is only practical for micro sized CCD sensors, like the 1/8th inch ones used in cheap consumer camcorders.

imho the best compromise cameras currently available are the "point and shoot" pocket digital cameras. my favorite was the Olympus Stylus 550wp. built in flash, ruggedized case, large CCD, waterproof, HD video. only 3x optical zoom and no stabilizer. you don't need a stabilizer at 3x unless you are falling down drunk.

What is the best camcorder to record instrumental performances?

Q. My husband likes to record himself when he practices percussion instruments. The problem is we need a camcorder that has good quality picture and can record the sound as it is. Some camcorders have an autoadjust in the sound so if a sound is too quiet it will make it louder and viseversa, we do not want that. We have looked at product descriptions but it didn't say that much about sound and if it does we have no clue what it is saying.

What camcorder would you suggest for us?

A. You need something to control the audio levels.

There are a couple of Sony (HDR-HC7, HDR-FX1, HDR,-FX7 and Canon (HV20, XHA1) to identify a few - but as you will find, they are higher-end camcorders. But all of these camcorders have manual audio control.

Another way is to control the audio externally, but this does not work quite as well - and will require in investment in external microphones in addition to the external control. Specifically, If you were to use a camcorder with a mic-in jack (like all those above or the Canon ZR800) and use an XLR adapter (like those from BeachTek - I wold suggest the DXA-6vu so you can see the audio being sent to the camcorder)... and mics that use XLR connections, then you would be OK.

The last option I can think of is to use a "field recorder". Several companies make them (M-Audio, Marantz, Fostex, among others). They have built-in mics or can connect external mics, they have manual audio-in level control and they typically record to some sort of memory card. When the video is edited in your computer, you set the audio from the camcorder video to zero and add this external audio on top of it.

What is the best mini dv camcorder with optical zoom?
Q. I need a mini dv camcorder with optical zoom, manual focus & exposure adjustments and capable of connecting an external microphone. What is the best model and where can I get it?

A. What is your budget?

Standard definition or high definition?

1/8" (3.5mm) stereo audio in or XLR audio in?

Canon ZR960
Canon HV40
Sony HVR-HD1000U
Canon GL2

Sony HDR-FX7
Sony HDR-FX1000

What is the best Prosumer HD camera and Why?

Q. I'd like to know what is the best Prosumer video camera for under $500?...I'd like to know if there are any HD video cameras coming within a year for under $500.00. Any information would be greatly appreciated.

A. Define "prosumer" camcorder.

My definition means it has a mic jack and manual audio control. Generally, the lenses are larger than 60mm (filter diameter) and the 1 or 3 CCD or CMOS imaging chip system is 1/4" or larger (1/3" is better.

Most camcorders under about $1,200 do not meet the above specs. Camcorders in the $500 range are generally in the mid-consumer grade area...

The Canon GL2 is the least expensive standard def camcorder that comes close. The high definition cams include Sony HVR-HD1000, HDR-FX7, HVR-A1, and HDR-FX1000. Below this in the high end consumer cams includes the Canon HF S Series, HV40 and Sony HDR-CX500 series. Below this includes the Canon HF series and the Sony HDR-CX100 or 300 series. There are a couple of Panasonics and JVCs that match up to these categories...

The most obvious visible difference between the prosumers and the pro-grade camcorders is the prosumers use a 1/8" (3.5mm) stereo audio-in jack... when you step up to the pro cams, they use XLR connectors for audio in. Less obvious are the video formats some of them use.

Prosumers can use 24mbps AVCHD (not recommended) or DV/HDV (preferred). Pro cams use DV/HDV, DVCPRO HD, HDCAM and XDCAM formats...

To answer your original question, I like the Sony HDR-FX1000. It replaced the FX1 - and is the sibling to the HVR-Z1 and HVR-Z5.

Are all the Canon Vixia camcorders the same video quality with only differences in zoom and battery life?

Q. I wouldnt mind getting the lowest price model if video quality can be the same with only differences in battery life and such. I'm just going to make a skateboard videow itht his so the angles and stuff I want don't require such high tech super focusing power or something. I can deal with the low battery life also just want to make sure the video quality is the same.

A. No.

The HG series were designed to record very highly compressed AVCHD/MTS format video to an internal hard drive. The HF and HF S series were designed to record very highly compressed AVCHD/MTS format video to flah memory. Some have built-in flash memory, some use removable SD cards. The MTS files are copied to the computer over USB and the video editor must decompress them before editing. The video editor must be capable of dealing with MTS files - or you need to convert the files first - typically, if you convert the MTS files to some other format before your editor gets them, this means the video is no longer high definition. There is no clearly defined long-term archive process flow in case you want the video in a year, or 2 or 5 or 10...

The HV series were designed to record to miniDV tape using the same DV and HDV format used by professional videographers. The DV and HDV video formats are recorded to inexpensive miniDV tape - but this means your computer must have a firewire port to import that video... and it also means that when you do not re-use the tape, it is the long-term archive. Most video editors can deal with DV format video - HDV may be a problem (but most likely just with the low-end editors like MovieMaker). Assuming it is not a problem, after inporting the video and editing, you can export that high definition video project back to the camcorder and use the camcorder as a playback deck and watch in high definition oin a HDTV when the camcorder is connected with component or HDMI cables. This is not possible with flash memory or hard disc drive consumer camcorders.

If your computer has no firewire port and no way to add one, then you only decent option is flash memory. Even though the video file types and video compression are the same, hard disc drive camcorders have other known issues with vibration and high altitude - and potential video data recovery challenges when the camcorder breaks and the video has not yet been transferred. With miniDV tape or flash memory, just take the tape or memory card out and find a similar camcorder for transfer. In the case of a flash memory card, just use a cheap card reader.

There's lots more, but these are the big-deal issues.

I read that Mini-DV camcorders produces the best video quality, which latest camcorder will you recommend?
Q. Another question, will Sony HDR-SR11 camcorder (planning to get one) gives me the video quality that the Mini-DV can give?

A. MiniDV is just the media format. It doesn't necessarily give the best quality.

Better to say that the best quality in semi-pro camcorders and down use MiniDV.

However, the Sony HDR-SR11 is phenomenal. It can out perform many HDV camcorders (those use MiniDV just in HD format...highest quality you'll get for MiniDV).

You might want to consider Sony HDR-SR12, since that's the same camcorder, but the hard drive is larger...60 GB is big, but better to be safe =P

But yes, that Sony HDR-SR11 is one of the few camcorders that will replace MiniDV.

What is a good inexpensive camcorder for independent filmmakers?

Q. I'm looking for a camcorder to buy, something that will not give me the whole 'home movie' effect and feel to it. I will also need a tripod so it won't be shakey and all that but could you just tell me some good inexpensive camcorders that will give me what i'm looking for. I don't know much about camcorders and lenses but i'm looking into it. If anyone can help me with brands and prices of camcorders to look into I will be very thankful.

-M

A. By "something that will not give me the whole 'home movie' effect and feel," I think your talking about the film-look. It can be replicated, through either software or in-camera. However, both these options are pretty expensive, and it doesn't sound like you have that much money right now. I'll get to that later, but for now I'm going to talk about cameras.

I dont know your budget, but from what you said, Im guessing you want a camera probably $800 or below (correct me if I'm wrong, and I'll re write this). In that price range, I cant recommend any particular camera, but follow these rules and you should have a pretty good beginner filmmaking camera:

1. Get miniDV- pretty obvious isn't it?
2. Look for a lot of manual functions- every cam has auto functions, but look for the ability to switch to manual focus, iris, shutter, etc.
3. 3ccds are better than 1
4. The newest isnt always the greatest- not really a rule but basically dont go and get the newest thing that just came out

Other plusses are mic ports, headphone ports, hot shoes, and optical image stabilizer.

If you get a tripod, get one with a fluid head. I'm not recommending a particular one, but look around on google. To tell you the truth, Im not exactly a pro on tripods. But a useful trick that you can do with your tripod is screw on your camera, and instead of opening up the legs, hold the legs together and walk with it. If you do it right, the tripod will absorb the shake from your hands giving you a very cheap steadicam effect.

I hope this helped, and I'm a filmmaker as well, and I always like meeting other filmmakers so feel free to contact me at evilgenius4930@yahoo.com

What does MP stand for when dealing with camcorders?

Q. I'm trying to buy a HD digital camcorder, but I'm not good at knowing what ones are good. I just want a Basic camcorder. Anyone know any good ones. Or can tell me some good features a descent camcorder should have.

And has anyone heard of the SVP™ HD T-400 camcorder? If so is it good? Cuz thats the one I was going to buy.

A. MP means megapixels. The MP rating means nothing for video as the video pixel size is pre-defined. MP does give an indication of the resolution possible with still photos. Personally, i ignore the MP ratings when selecting a camcorder.

i also don't like memory card video particularly, i am more of a tape guy. the camera is very compact but that comes at a price. the lens does not have optical zoom so framing pictures will be hard. it is not possible to "crop" video after it is shot like you can do with still photos.

another problem typical with this class of camera is they cannot shoot video continuously, ie it would not work to record a wedding. but it would be great to have in your purse to get "candids" at the reception.

Can someone tell me a good digital camcorder?
Q. I want to try and find a good, cheap digital camcorder. I want one that can record a TV if it's hooked up as well as regular video. If you can recommend one, please tell me where I can find it as well and it's price. Thanks.

A. What you are looking for in a camcorder is the "AV passthrough" or "Analog/Digital bridge" feature. Not all camcorders have this capability. Check the Panasonics - like the PV-GS320, I think. There are a few others.

The ratings and reviews areas at camcorderinfo.com has the camcorder features and comparisons - you may need to read through the reviews to find what you are looking for. They also - typically - have the prices and suggestions on where to buy online.

If you are buying over the internet, don't get scammed. BEFORE you buy, ask the camcorder forum over at cnet.com for feedback on whoever you think you might buy from...

In a area with much more squirrels then rabbits would a squirrel call work better for predators?

Q. For the second time this week I just witnessed a gray fox eating a squirrel and it was the coolest thing ever because I was able to watch from my kitchen. For the longest time I have been trying to get some good video of them for my youtube channel (channels partnered so its like a fun job) and I think now would be the best time due to the fact I have seen 4 red foxes and 2 or more gray foxes along with one lone coyote in just two weeks alone and thats a all time high. Anyway just a month or two ago I had probably about 30 squirrels eating corn from the food pile I put out and no rabbits. I have only seen like 20 rabbits in all of 2012. So wouldnt a squirrel call be better or do squirrels not make squeels?
Dan I know you probably know 100 times more then me but in only a 100 acre area wouldnt only one call be better then a whole wounded bird/rodent party? Sounds pretty suspicous to animals I bet.

A. Andrew:

All predators know the sound of an injured rabbit. All predators know the sound of an injured squirrel. In fact, the sound of just about ANY injured critter in the wild gets the attention of fox and coyotes, as well as any other critter that prefers a diet of meat. However, keep in mind that squirrels often retreat to the trees where the four-legged varmints can't get to them. Only the hawks and owls. All though the raptors make great video subjects, most predator hunters do not want them coming to the call. "IF" you invest in a quality calling system such as Fox Pro or one of a half a dozen other good brands of electronic callers, you can also equip yourself with a good variety of prerecorded calls on disc, tape, or memory card besides the sounds of injured rabbit and squirrel. I have three different electronics which offer me a selection that includes distress calls of fawn deer, cub bears, fox & coyote pups, bobcat/lynx kittens, woodpecker, wood rat, crows/ravens, waterfowl, two kinds of rabbits, etc. Even with all of that and more to choose from and three QUALITY electronics systems to choose from and play those sounds as well, I STILL carry my reed call because over the 40+ years I have hunted the predators, I have learned how to make it work, and work well. It talks a language that EVERY predator I would ever hunt FULLY understands. "RABBIT!" Just remember that with the animals that close to you, you do NOT want to over-blow or over-work the call. Also remember a VERY important point that a LOT of beginning callers don't often think about. Rabbits have a LOT smaller lungs than you do. Keep your calls down to shorter bursts and runs. Don't make L-O-N-G and drawn out calls or series of calls. If the varmints are as close to your neighborhood as you say, you should have them in your lap within minutes. If you haven't seen them within 15 minutes up to a half hour, max, either you've done something wrong and they've seen you or heard something about your call they didn't like, OR they just aren't there. This is one of those times when practice really does make perfect. But do NOT practice outside with the fox and coyotes. They learn quicker than we do and the smarter they get from our mistakes, the harder they will be to coax in to your call, regardless of WHAT kind of call you use. Good luck. (IMPORTANT TIP: Keep the battery for your camcorder FULLY charged. Remember they do not work as well or as long in COLD weather. It's even a good idea sometimes to carry the battery in your warm pocket until you are ready to use it. It's ALWAYS good to carry an extra fully charged spare or two.)

ANDREW: You don't EVER play them all as in your so-called "rodent party". You have a remote option to choose ONLY the call or two that best fits the occasion. In your case, I'd place my remote speaker about 40 or 50 yards away from where I set up the camera and then use the remote selector and volume control to pied-piper one in. At most, I have NEVER used more than three calls at any one session. I might start with the jackrabbit fairly loud and then go to a quiter version of the cottontail rabbit and finish up with the final coaxing call of a mouse or wood rat squeaking. It works. It's not rocket science here, just common sense and logic. And when you use the good quality products rather than a cellphone, trust me on this, the predators RARELY think it "sounds pretty suspicious". And that's something you CAN bet on.
