What is a good digital camcorder?

Q. what is a good digital camcorder for under 300 bucks? that records good quality. give me some brands thanks. oh and that takes pictures too.
all i want it for is to record stupid videos to put up like on youtube.com and stuff like that nothing for professional recording or anything just to mess around with and catch stupid stuff on cam.

A. In General the best Digital Camcorder in the market is SONY. They have a lot of very good models. Then comes Panasonic, Cannon, JVC etc
Go to best buy.com and you will find selection under $300, but mostly Samsung & JVC.
If you are going to just use it every now and then, then go for JVC better than Samsung, but for sure think about the SONY.

What's an affordable camcorder to film hunts?
Q. My brother and I are planning on filming our hunting trips this upcoming fall. Looking for a good quality camera for under $300. Must have high zoom capability (optical) and preferably water proof (resistant).

One that I am interested in is the sony handycam DCR-DVD650, any input on this model will be helpfull.

A. You may want to get something that is not a DVD or HDD (Hard Disk Drive) cam which are subject to failure should the camera be dropped or abruptly jolted. And HDD drives can fail at high altitudes. DVD cams are not easy to access (edit) your final video on disk (you have to use a ripper program). Also moving drives use more battery consumption. For going out in the field on a hunt, you would want to use a flash memory camcorder. Some are dual-flash which can record your video on internal memory or to a memory card. A cam that would work for you in your budget would be something like the Canon VIXIA HF R100. It records in HD to memeory cards. It has a 20x optical zoom.

$279.00 (amazon.com)

What is the best 3 ccd mini dv camcorder on the market for doing mini docuementries on YouTube?

Q. I want to do a video business update blog to my clients once a week. I'm going to use YouTube as my portal I'm looking for a good cameral with high quality picture. I have to stay under $1000 for the camera. I don't need a lot of manual controls but ease of use is important. We already know how to do the lighting.

A. Covering the lighting is great - you did not say how you were going to cover the audio. If you are takking care of audio externally, then you do not need to read further. If you want the camcorder to take care of the audio, keep reading.

Any camcorder with a Mic-in jack and manual audio control will work.

The cheapest camcorders that have these are the Canon HV20, HV30, Sony HDR-HC7 and HC9. All use CMOS chips. All can do standard definition (DV) and high definition (HDV).

What's the best handheld digital camcorder to shoot a short, small-time movie with?
Q. *preferably UNDER $1000* I really want to get into film production and I figured I would test the water - you have to start somewhere, right? I'm looking mostly for 1) high picture quality and 2) ability to execute simple cinematic effects like focusing in and out on an object. I may show it to the admissions directors at UCLA as part of my "portfiolio" when applying to the film school next year, so I really would like it to look professional as possible.
(and don't be like all those morons who say "LOL WELL MAYBE YOU SHOULD LEARN HOW TO SPELL PORTFOLIO BEFORE YOU START MAKING ONE IM 45 YEARS OLD WITH NO JOB AND I SPEND MY TIME ON YAHOO ANSWERS CRITICIZING 17 YEAR OLD KIDS OVER TYPOS!! :):):):)" cause obviously, it was a typo...)

A. if you want the best under $1000, look for a 3ccd camcorder.

if you really want to get that "film look", you'll have to pay more money. you'll need something that will shoot in 24p. a new panasonic dvx will cost you about $3500, but you can find cheaper ones on ebay.

How do I tell if a computer is a good deal?

Q. I need to shop for a new computer but don't know much about them and don't know how to get the most for my money. How do I shop for a comp and know if it is a good price?
Please lay this out in simple terms for me.
I plan on using my comp for:
-internet
-music-ipod, burning cds
-pics-downloanding from digital cam
know I want microsoft office.

A. LOLOL! There are SOO many things to compare, and what you use it for also has to be taken into consideration in making a decision. Having said that, here are the minimums that you should definitely compare:

Apple or PC (Windows based system)
Hope you know which one you prefer lol.

Hard Drive Size.
This determines how much information/data you can store on your computer. It also affects the speed at which your computer functions. How big it should be really depends on what you do on your computer. But I'd at least get 80GB just for basic applications such as Internet Exploror, Microsoft Office, etc.

Type of Processor and Processor Speed (also called CPU)
This is an important factor that determines your computer's speed. The faster the processor, the faster applications will open aand operate
The latest one from Intel is Pentium Duo 2, but Pentium D or Pentium 4 is also good if you are not looking to get the latest.

Random Access Memory (RAM)
This determines the amount of memory that you can use at once. If you have a large RAM, you can run more programs at once. This also affects the speed at which programs operate.
For surfing on the net, using Microsoft Office, playing DVD movies, etc, 512MB is sufficient. If you wanna edit videos, connect an HD camcorder, etc, then, you need at least 1GB.

DVD drive:
First of all, most of the computers come with either 1 or 2 DVD drives. 1 is sufficient if you use it just to play DVDs and/or occasionally transfer/copy files from your hard drive to a DVD disk for storage or to backup your hard drive. You may want 2 DVD drives only if you frequently make copies of DVDs. In that case, you use one drive to insert a disk that already has files/data, and the other one to insert a blank DVD disk to copy the files onto. BUT you can always copy the files once to your hard drive, take out the disk, swap it with a blank disk and copy the files from the hard drive to the blank disk.

Another thing for you to check is if the DVD drive can write or not. Some DVD drives (called DVD-R) can only READ DVDs, which means you can play DVDs on your computer but cannot WRITE or copy files onto blank DVD disks. If you wanna save your files on DVD disks, you need to get a DVD-RW drive.

Lastly, there are single layer and double layer DVD-RW drives. With a double layer drive AND a double layer DVD disk, you can store twice as much information on one disk.

If you plan on using the computer to play games, the type of video card you get, in addition to Hard Drive/RAM/CPU, really matters. If you are a music lover and need good sounds, then a sound card matters.

You may also wanna check if it comes with basic soft such as Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, Powerpoint etc.) if that matters to you.

Hope you 'd included more about how you plan on using your machine lol!

**** EDIT ******

Great!!!!! You added what you plan on doing on your computer. Yeeey! lmao!

Alright. I will lay out my suggestions for you assuming you are gettin a PC and this is ALL you use your computer for.

Hard Drive (HD): 80GB to 160GB

Processor (CPU): I only know about Intel so if you get Intel, either Pentium 4 / Pentium D 2GHz or faster, OR any of the Duo processor.

RAM: 512MB.

DVD Drive: Get a single layer DVD-RW dirve. If you keep transferring pictures onto your PC's hard drive, the HD will eventually get filled up. Then, you will want to copy them to DVDs or CDs to clear up the HD and improve HD's performance, lol.
ALL DVD-RW drives can write CDs.

It'll be nice if the deal includes Microsoft Office. But you can always purchase the package separately and install it.

Also, check how many USB ports the computer has. Many peripherals (keyboard, mouse, printer/scanner, etc) now use USB ports. Hopefully you have enough of them and you don't have to unplug any of the peripheral devices in order to hook up your digi cam or iPOD.

Good luck, hehe!

**** EDIT 2 ****

For instance, the cheapest one listed here:
http://www.dell.com/content/products/features.aspx/cto_dimene520?c=us&cs=19&l=en&s=dhs

will do. You may wanna add a monitor, get a DVD-RW drive (the cheapest one does write CDs but not DVDs), and Microsoft Office.

Again, check the number of USB ports and if you are very picky abount sounds that come out of the computer, you may want a better sound card than the default one.

What are some good, yet cheap pro/high end consumer, camcorders that record to an SD card and not to MiniDV?

Q. I am looking to make the next investment from my Sony handy-cam that is in standard Def. I want to start making independent movies and I know most of these cameras are a thousand dollars at least so if you know any under 1000 I would like to know please!! I am looking for a good picture and if no in HD at least a camera compatible with lenses that have filters and the such.

A. You are going to have a hard time. its all about quality if you are planing on making movies. In your budget you will be limited to second hand, and certainly not HD, People may point you toward DSLR, anything good will be three times plus that price.

I cannot understand why people dont want to use Tapes, $ for $ they offer the highest quality than bad high compression codecs used in other formats. Flash drive, or HDD.

You have looked to the prices of new cameras you pay the money for a reason, quality, first and foremost, If I could get away with out spending $10,000 on a camera i certainly would, but for the quality I have to there is no such thing as a cheap "pro/high end consumer" you get what you pay for.

For your money you need to be looking at Ebay, or places like that, a few companies offer second-hand equipment, but you need to find out what it was used for and the conditions it was used in.

the word "professional" is banded about by makers, everything today seems to have that word used, from video converters, why to get people to buy them, but no "processional" would use them, funny Eh!!!!!

You need to take into consideration, what you are going to film, if there is any fast action then forget your flash, hard drive based cameras they will not do well, try filming a foot ball, or someone moving their arm fast, you will get artefacts, bits left from the previous virtual frame, as they do not take every frame unlike tape based cameras. DSLR's are even worse at it.

Do your home work and see what it available,

I wish you luck

RR

Where can i find a professional video camera?
Q. Where can i find a professional video camera like the one they use in movies?? and also i am looking for microphones that they use in movies. they have to be windproof.
Please Please help me, i've been looking for a really good camera for a long time. I really want to make a professional movie :)??? Thank you so much!

A. Start with a budget.

Stay through the credits at the next movie you see at a theater. You will typically see Panavision. Arri is a pretty common *film* camera, too. The moving image is captured to *film*, the film is sent for processing, each frame is digitized & returned to the editor for that phase of the project. The audio system is separate from the *film* camera. The audio is combined with the moving image during editing. Synchronizing uses SMTPE code. These cameras start at about $100,000, Add more for the lenses. Generally, they are leased for the duration of the the project.

RED (Scarlet, Epic, One) & Silicon Imaging ("Slumdog Millionaire") (among a few others) make digital cameras that have been used for theatrical release projects. The cameras start at around $40,000. Add more for lenses and other accessories. Panasonic (Varicam) & Sony (CineAlta) are in this area, too. The audio system is separate from the camera (even though some of these can capture audio) & the audio is combined with the moving image during editing.

Then there's camcorders. At the high end are Sony HDCAM/XDCAM & Panasonic P2 series. They record video along with audio, but use of a separate audio system rather than the audio captured by the camera is *strongly* suggested. These range anywhere from $30,000 to $80,000.

Step down to the mid-range of pro-grade camcorders and that gets us to the Sony PDW area & the higher end of the HVR series. Canon XF300, Panasonic AVCAM & a few others are in this mix. About $10,000 to ~$40,000. These record audio but use of a separate audio system rather than the audio captured by the camera is *strongly* suggested.

Step down to the low end of pro-grade camcorders: Sony HVR-Z5, Panasonic AG-HVX200, JVC GY-HM series ~$5,000 to $10,000 range. These record audio but use of a separate audio system rather than the audio captured by the camera is *strongly* suggested.

Prosumers in the Sony HDR-FX1000 (the original "Paranormal Activity") & entry-level pro grade (Canon XHA1, XF100) get us below $5,000. These record audio but use of a separate audio system rather than the audio captured by the camera is *strongly* suggested.

High end consumer-grade cams are around $1,500. Mid-range consumer-grade cams are around $900. These record audio but use of a separate audio system rather than the audio captured by the camera is *strongly* suggested.

And I'll stop with camcorder pricing here.

Mics: Sometimes shotgun mics mounted to a boom pole are used in movies. Sennheiser, ElectroVoice & Audio Technica are my favorites. A mid-range shotgun mic is about $1,000. Use of a "fuzzy" (also called a "dead cat") or a zeppelin will help to create the dead-air space between the mic element & wind.

Sometimes wireless clip-on mics are used. "Lavalier". I prefer them wireless. Sennheiser makes good low-end systems starting at around $600. Sony & others make good (more expensive) systems.

Lots of times the audio is "made". That's what Foley artists do. And there's always dubbing the dialog (in a studio - so different types of condenser mics) after the fact.

Then there's lights, cables, cables, stands, steadying devices (tripod, camera crane, Steadycam vest system, dolly, etc.), power, cases, audio recording equipment & LOTS more. You can rent/hire a grip truck & crew for lots of this.

Add makeup, wardrobe, feeding the talent, permits, all sorts of legal stuff... and your computer being able to deal with the editing...

In the spectrum of consumer cameras through pro-grade camcorders, the visible difference is the lens & imaging chip are small at the consumer level. They cannot do well under poor lighting conditions. As the price increases, the lens & imaging chip get bigger, improving the low-light capture behavior. If all you can afford is a sub-$3,000 camcorder, expect to spend $ on lighting.

Some experienced folks are able to use the convenience feature of dSLRs for movies. This takes a lot more effort because of the characteristics & requirements of video capture using this convenience feature. But they *can* capture great video when used by someone with skill & experience.

If the less expensive cameras could do as good of a job as the more expensive cameras then the professional productions would use them. Since this work is their *job*, they want to spend as little $ as possible on equipment (they can keep more $ in their pocket).

But Step 1 is to set a budget and see what fits.

To answer your question directly: for affordable "really good camera" equipment used by many consumers & professionals, check bhphotovideo.com and adorama.com

Write the concept, the outline, the script, story-board it all & run the project - because that is what lots of films are - a big "project managed" activity... Have fun!

-takes sharp pictures of people in the dark
-a camcorder that takes pictures and records sound
under $500.00 preferable!

What is the difference between digital camera and Camcorder in the context of still picture issue?
Q. Actually i want better still picture + better video quality. but i m confused about that things. i want 2 buy camcorder bcoz its provide both feature. so which one is useful for me digital camers or Camcorder in still picture issue. is this the same quality between camcorder and digital cam.

A. No its not the same quality. Buy a digital camera, not a digital camcorder. Still frames of camcorders are horrible quality and only look good when played with other frames. What I would do is buy a camcorder and a digital camera. If you just want video then buy a camcorder, but for pictures, the camera is the best thing!

How to connect a sony vx2000 to my mac os x?
Q. Hey, I have recently gotten a sony vx2000 and have noticed that my mac os x does not have the old firewire port that all previous macs had. My question is what can i do to connect my vx2000 to my mac os x's new firewire thingy? do I need to purchase a certain cord or port? please help really need to capture some footage!

A. Since you did not tell us WHICH Mac...

If you have a MacBook, the ones made between October 2008 and June 2009 don't have a firewire port. If your Macbook was made before or after that time, it has a firewire port. MacBook Airs don't have a firewire port. In both cases, there is no way to add a firewire port. The only workaround I can think of is to get another Mac with a firewire port, import the video to an external drive then move the external drive to the MacBook and edit... USB-to-firewire cable/converter/adapter things won't work.

ALL other Macs made in the last 10+ years have a firewire port. Older Macs have a 6-pin firewire 400 port. Newer Macs use a 9-pin firewire 800 port. If your Mac has a firewire port and you used to connect with a 4-pin to 6-pin firewire cable, all you need to do is get a 4-pin to 9-pin firewire cable.

Yes, the 6-pin and 9-pin connectors are different shapes/sizes. I used to import video from my Sony miniDV tape camcorders to a Mac tower (QuickSilver) with a 6-pin firewire 400 port... then to an iMac flatpanel G5... and now with my iMac 24" flatpanes, I use a 4-pin to 9-pin firewire cable and they work just fine importing to iMovie '09 and FinalCut...

What is a good inexpensive camcorder for independent filmmakers?

Q. I'm looking for a camcorder to buy, something that will not give me the whole 'home movie' effect and feel to it. I will also need a tripod so it won't be shakey and all that but could you just tell me some good inexpensive camcorders that will give me what i'm looking for. I don't know much about camcorders and lenses but i'm looking into it. If anyone can help me with brands and prices of camcorders to look into I will be very thankful.

-M

A. By "something that will not give me the whole 'home movie' effect and feel," I think your talking about the film-look. It can be replicated, through either software or in-camera. However, both these options are pretty expensive, and it doesn't sound like you have that much money right now. I'll get to that later, but for now I'm going to talk about cameras.

I dont know your budget, but from what you said, Im guessing you want a camera probably $800 or below (correct me if I'm wrong, and I'll re write this). In that price range, I cant recommend any particular camera, but follow these rules and you should have a pretty good beginner filmmaking camera:

1. Get miniDV- pretty obvious isn't it?
2. Look for a lot of manual functions- every cam has auto functions, but look for the ability to switch to manual focus, iris, shutter, etc.
3. 3ccds are better than 1
4. The newest isnt always the greatest- not really a rule but basically dont go and get the newest thing that just came out

Other plusses are mic ports, headphone ports, hot shoes, and optical image stabilizer.

If you get a tripod, get one with a fluid head. I'm not recommending a particular one, but look around on google. To tell you the truth, Im not exactly a pro on tripods. But a useful trick that you can do with your tripod is screw on your camera, and instead of opening up the legs, hold the legs together and walk with it. If you do it right, the tripod will absorb the shake from your hands giving you a very cheap steadicam effect.

I hope this helped, and I'm a filmmaker as well, and I always like meeting other filmmakers so feel free to contact me at evilgenius4930@yahoo.com

What are some good blogs or websites for independent filmmaking?
Q. I want to learn how to make a film so I want to do my own research but I'm not sure what are reliable sources of information. Cinematography, Sound, lighting, etc. Also some good articles that could give me advice on what type of camcorder I should get that wouldn't be too expensive but still produce quality video.

A. Do a search for film shed

Some simple questions I want simple answers too about the 3DS?

Q. 1. The 3DS supports an SD card. Can you:
Put mp3's on it and listen to them off the 3DS, and can you do this with the lid closed?
Put picture files on it and view them in the 3DS?
Put video files on it and view them in the 3DS? If so, what type of video files (Avi, wmv, etc)

If no to any of the above, will some or all of these features be a possible availability in a future update?

2. Can you view and watch youtube videos on the 3DS browser? I noticed it does not have flash supported, so I am guessing this is a big no, which is sad because you can on the opera browser on the wii.

Those are the only questions I currently have about it, as I am planning on buying one myself shortly after the holidays.

I'm getting a 3DS, and that's that. Any comments about how I should get the Vita instead will be disregarded, as I don't have the patience to save up an extra $80 (I get money very slowly).
Grammar/Spelling fail in the title. I meant "to" not "too"
I could probably get one of those R4's that are compatible with the 3DS to do video watching then after I'm sure they don't brick your console.

And if yahoo answers removes this post because I commented on an R4, R4's are not initially illegal in the U.S., and I can talk about them if I want to.

A. Yes to all of Question 1

No to Question 2 until a future Wi-Fi Update in 2012 or 2013.

And with the 3DS you can play music (even with the system close).

You can LOWER the VOLUME of 3D so it does NOT give you headaches for the first time in your life (if you're the kind of person to ever get headaches from 3D, otherwise just turn the 3D all the way up).

And you can also turn the 3D OFF Completely.

And 3D is good for working out your eye muscles & brain to keep them in shape as shown in this link:

http://www.aoa.org/x17309.xml

And the Nintendo 3DS has downloadable 3D Music videos from today's American music artist which I have already downloaded the 3 free 3D Music Videos to watch anywhere and the 3DS has 3D "Blue Man Group" video and College Humor (in 3D) with the FREE "Nintendo Video" App that you can download (but its 4 3D Videos at a time and they replace them once in a while) and you can download cheap downloadable 3D Apps & 3D games costing from 99 cents to $5.99 and the Nintendo 3DS also has FREE downloadable 3D Apps & 3D Games, which I have already downloaded 3 Free 3D Apps and I have downloaded 2 Free 3D Games and the 3DS has a 3D Camera and I have already used the 3DS 3D Camera to take 3D photos and I have uploaded some of my 3D footage online using the Nintendo 3DS's Web Browser to upload my 3D footage online and I have used my 3DS Web Browser to also download other peoples 3D footage from the Internet on my 3DS Web Browser and I have view all sorts of 3D content on 3D Websites online on my 3DS's Web Browser and I have use my 3DS 3D Camera to play 3D Augmented Reality games as well and it's all in 3D without the Glasses using the 3DS 3D Camera and It has beautiful 3D HD graphics that equal to that of a 3D HD version of Wii Graphics and I have Streamed 3D Videos Online on my 3DS in the eShop and I have also Watch 3D Trailers for upcoming 3D movies coming to Theaters in 3D and I have done all of this in 3D Without the Glasses.

And the 3DS with a Wi-Fi Update can RECORD 3D Videos in 60 fps (unlike other camcorders, that only Record in 2D Only and in up to 30 fps only).

And the 3DS pixel density is MUCH sharper than an average HD TV.

And they're making Angry Birds 3D as a downloadable game.

And the 3DS is getting DLC (Downloadable Content) like Xbox Live for a bunch of 3DS games to add content to the game later on for Free.

And 1 of the Free 3D Apps I have downloaded was Netflix.

And Netflix is getting 3D Movies in the next few months.

And 100% of the people who have said that they get headaches from 3D, have said that after up to 1 week of using the 3DS they NO LONGER get headaches anymore and that they now play with the 3D all the way up 100% all the time, non-stop.

But I have never had any problem with the 3D at all, but each person has a different experience with the 3D ON during the first week.

And you can now pay to download 3D Videos on the 3DS.

And the 3DS is getting Hulu Plus before the end of this year (2011) as a Free downloadable App and Hulu already has 3D Content.

and you can check this Link below for more 3DS Games:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Nintendo_3DS_games

P.S. You will want to check these sites out for the Web Browser's 3D ability:

http://www.3ds-screenshot.com/

http://gamecrunch.co/3dscreens/

http://3dporch.com/

http://3dspaint.com/

http://www.klutz.com/static/nintendo/n3ds_mm9.html

http://www.instructables.com/3ds/

And the 3DS can play MP3, M4A & AAC.

And you will want to create a new folder in the SD card for every 100 songs, if you want to play more than 100 songs.

And you need the videos to be of the right format and then you put them in DCIM folder (and if there is any folders in there, than put it in the one with less than 100 .mpo in it).

How long could you video on camcorder that has 64mb and also for 8gb?

Q. Wanting to buy camcorder. Need something to video for awhile. Not like really long.

A. http://www.walmart.com/JVC-Everio-GZ-MG230-Camcorder-2GB-mircoSD/ip/10878773

it may be a bit pricy but for the camcorder, its certainly worth it and be a wise investment for you.

it takes still pictures, 34x zooming capability (you can zoom in an object even half a mile away and still get clear pictures) ... takes hours of videos which can be adjusted to regular or wide screens, nice color reproductions. and the best thing about it is ... it has a 30GB internal memory which can take thousands of pictures and hours of videos.

so no more packing extra dvds or tapes for backup .. its all in there. aside from the small compact handy design, i've never had any problems with it working with my computer.

and for you question .. 64mb ... a normal movie is about 700 mb (2hours), so you can probably have about 10 movies on an 8GB one. but just imagine, how many hours on a 30GB memory like this one i'm talking about.

So there you have it ... and good luck with your buy, even if its not this one. and hope it will serve you good.

Where can I find a memory card for my camcorder?

Q. I have a Jazz Dv153 pocket camcorder and it needs a 2gb memory card. I looked all over Ebay and I couldn't find one. Are there any other websites that sell these types of memory cards?

A. The Jazz DV153 uses SD (Secure Digital) or MMC (Multi Media Card) 2GB cards which are very common and are available at retailers such as Walmart, Bestbuy, RadioShack, etc. Or on-line at amazon.com, Buy.com, etc. Brands like Kingston, SanDisk, PNY are are well known brands. Some cards sold on Ebay are import non-brand cards and may not meet industry standards and thus the integrity of such cards will be in question. You want to trust that your video is safe on a brand name card.

What's the best mini camcorder I can get for 300 dollars and where can I get it?
Q. I have a budget of 300 dollars for a mini camcorder. I want the best I can find and I need to know who carries it for that price.

A. JVC mini-DV

Get it at:
WalMart
Best Buy
Circuit City

$299.00 When you see a JVC at that price, you'll know what I am talking about. I have one.

Auto and Manual modes. Flip LCD screen, or if you like the traditional view finder (eye-piece) it has that too.

Takes pictures too, onto a SD memory card.

Transfer the video to PC via FireWire and edit the files and make DVDs with special software.

Tapes are cheap and can be used safely up to 10 times (as with ANY mini-DV camcorder).

Anyone no of a great professional camcorder?

Q. I am starting video production and am wondering what equiptment is the best to buy, at an affordable price. I guess I am wanting a professional camcorder at a budgeter's price.

A. Great question. Here are my top picks for the best professional camcorder. I have taken price into consideration. If you want HD:

1) Red Scarlet (coming soon, 2009) $3,000
2) Sony PMW-EX1 $6,000
3) JVC GY-HD200U $5,500
4) Panasonic AG-HVX200 $5,000
5) Canon XH-A1 $3,300

RED SCARLET: Many are skeptical about the Red Scarlet as it is a relatively unknown brand, but I believe it is the best professional camcorder under $10,000. No contest. With a traditional camcorder, like that made by Sony, Canon, etc, you'll be lucky if you get one that records in true HD. That is, most camcorders do NOT record in true 1920 x 1080 resolution, apart from the Sony PWM-EX1, as listed above. The Red Scarlet however, records footage in 3K, that is about 150% of the resolution of 1920 x 1080 HD. All that for $3,000. I don't know how well the Scarlet will perform when it is released in 2009 as far as color reproduction, cinematic look, audio capabilities, and manual controls, but I do know that it gives you better resolution than any camera I know of under $20,000. Therefore, the Red Scarlet is definately worth looking into. 3K footage for under $3K is a total steal!
______________
SONY PMW-EX1: It is a relatively new camcorder that records to tapeless media the SxS cards. The EX1 has better resolution that its Canon, Panasonic and JVC competitors, as the XDCAM cards do NOT compress nearly as much as HDV. Another huge advantage is that it has 3 CMOS chips that are 1/2" each, as opposed to 1/3" or smaller chips found on every other camera under $10,000. The larger image sensor gives your picture a much narrower depth of field, which is great for budding filmmakers, wanting that look of celluloid film. The only setback is that the EX1's media format, the SxS XDCAM media cards only record about 25 minutes of high quality footage on the supplied card, and purchasing additional cards is very expensive.
_______________
JVC HD200U
The HD200U is no Sony, Panasonic, or Canon, but it is an excellent camera nonetheless. Some pro reviews have said that the earlier model, the HD110U was the second best camera as far as picture quality in the prosumer level, next to the Canon XL-H1, which is $8,000. I really like the HD110 and HD200 as it is the only prosumer HD camera, apart from the XL-H1 with interchangeable lenses, rather than a built in lens. The only problem is that the HD200U does not record HD in 1080p or 1080i, but instead, it only has a lower-resolution 720p mode. To me, this isn't all that bad, as I prefer 720p at 60fps over 1080p at 30fps; it blurs much less, but you'll have to make the decision. Numerous independant films have been shot on the JVC HD110 and HD200, so its an excellent camera!

_______________
Panasonic HVX200: The HVX200 is a great inexpensive choice for the indie filmmaker. It has excellent picture quality and an excellent 24p mode. Another huge upside is that it records to both HDV OR P2 cards, so its really convenient. However, it does not have quite as good picture quality as the Sony EX1, nor does it have interchangeable lenses like the JVC HD200. It's an excellent, well-rounded HD camera nonetheless. I found it works excellent with the Redrock M2 35mm adapters though.
____________
Canon XH-A1: The XH-A1 is rated as one of the best cameras out there for its combination of quality and value for your money. I agree. It's a nice, well rounded camera; relatively easy to use (compared to the others at least) and is packed with loads of features, making it an excellent value. My only problem is that it does not have a 720p mode. It also lacks a real 24p mode, and instead has what Canon calls a 24f mode. According to Canon, the 2 are identical, but I really don't know.

For standard definition, which is still a great option, as HD is still new and expensive:
1) Panasonic AG-DVX100B $2,500
2) Canon XL2 $3,000
3) Sony DSR-PD170 $2,500

I really can't decide whether I like the DVX100B or the XL2 better. I'm leaning towads the DVX100B as a better overall camera (and its very user friendly), but then again, the XL2 has interchangeable lenses. Both can record in 24p, which is a great option. The PD170 is a total low-light wonder, is easy to use, but does not have a 24p mode.

If this is still not what you had in mind for a budget, here are some decent consumer HD cameras:
1) Sony HDR-HC3 and HDR-HC9
2) Canon HV20 and HV30

both are HDV. I highly recommend it. I can't stand mini DVD or flash media. HDV is also considerably better than Hard Disk camera; they don't compress your footage quite as much.

Hope that helps, and I apologize if that's still not what you had in mind. Well good luck, and have fun!!!

What kind of microphone and sound equipment would you recommend to use to make a movie?
Q. I'm going to make a youtube video, and all I have is a Kodak Playsport camcorder, but nothing else, what kind of microphone and sound equipment would I need to do this??
P.S. I wanna make a video kindof like this:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BR5PXn-wS1c&feature=channel&list=UL

A. If you want a good HD camera within a decent price range. Check on the Kodak Zi8. I have that one and it does beautifully. You can change between 1080p, 720p 60FPS, 720p 30FPS, and SD videos. It even has 5.1MP stills, but I don't use that. The best thing about it is the external mic jack, which allows you to use a better microphone, which Flip cameras do not have. As well as an SD card slot, which allows countless hours of recording.

How do I connect my camcorder to my computer?

Q. I have a Panasonic PV-GS320 camcorder and a Mac computer. When I connect the camcorder to the computer with the cord, nothing happens. I tried turning it on, but it's dead without the battery and the plug is behind the battery, so the battery has to come out in order for me to plug the cord into the camera. And no, I can't just read the instructions because my idiot brother decided to use it as a fire starter -_-

What camera should I use for filming my skateboarding tricks?

Q. I'm very good at skateboarding and I want to buy a good camera to film my skateboarding so I can make a video. What camera should I get? I want one that will film very good and it has to be cheap. I want my videos to look like pro. What are the best Mega Pixel to use?

A. Well, that is always the worst struggle in buying cameras: Price vs. Quality. Megapixel usually refers to picture cameras not camcorders, but speaking of picture quality, you may or may not want to look into an hd camera. Even though some cameras do say hd it doesn't really mean much. For me I use a sony vx1000 which is not HD but it is very very common in the skateboarding industry. It is 3ccd, which provides great picture, on top of the already beautiful colors it is capable of achieving. They will be probably over 500 dollars, but they are only getting cheaper as the HD age is taking over. Making your videos look like the pro videos will require you to buy a panasonic hvx along with a "death" fisheye lens which will put you back 6 grand or so. I would simply start out with something like a Panasonic SDR-H80K and get a fisheye for it. Good luck bro!

What camcorder would you recommend for skateboarding?
Q. I need a camcorder that runs for about a hundred and fifty to two hundred dollars. I cant seem to find too many that do well in low lighting. Any brand will obviously do!

A. Seriously, if youre talking in that price range, just pick pretty much any miniDV camera out there. All of them are pretty much the same in that price range. None of them are gonna have good low light, because they have tiny (1/6 inch usually) chips, and bigger ones are more expensive. So just grab one that feels good in your hand, has good optical zoom and look for some manual features (if any exist), and youll be fine. Hope this helps!

What is the cheapest camcorder with slow motion capacity?

Q. I would like a camcorder for my birthday that has slow motion capacity. Under 300 dollars would be useful, but I know there aren't that many at that price. I want the best quality, however, for that price range. I don't want a camera with 5 fps, god no.

A. Recording at a slow frame rate won't provide you with very good slow motion playback. You want to record at a high frame rate...

For example, some Sony camcorders have a "SmoothSlowRecord" feature that allows fast frame rate capture (120 fps) for a 3 second burst. When played back at NTSC standard 30 fps, the playback takes 12 seconds (or 25% of the original speed). The Casio Exilim line has longer high frame rate capture.

If you just use the camcorder's 30 fps capture and have the video editor slow the playback, when you get to about 15 fps (or 50% of the original speed) is when the video starts being a bit jerky...

Photron and Vision Research (and others) make high speed cameras that can do 300 fps, 1,000 fps and even 3,000 fps or higher - they are expensive.

im looking for a camera/camcorder-under $300- good quality and auto focus for recording makeup tutorials?
Q. I want to start making makeup tutorials on YT, but need a good camcorder first. I need it to be under $300, have good quality and great auto focus. thanks

A. The last thing you should want if your doing that type of video, is Auto focus.

You should be more concerned if the camcorder has a Manual Mode.

With Manual Mode, when shooting your video, when your showing a product to your viewers, when you shove something close to lens, the camcorder will not go into fits trying to focus like it would if you had the camcorder in Easy or Auto Mode.. Also, in Manual Mode, when you did shove that item up to the lens, both the item and you would be in focus, at the same time, That is the way you would be shooting a make up video.

What is the best camcorder to use for a short film?

Q. I need to make some short films an I need to best of the best camcorder I can get. Does anybody know of some? I don't have a budget for it. Just need it ASAP.

A. Red Epic.
Canon EOS Cinema cam.

remember to add a few mics (Sennheiser, Audio Technica), tripod (Manfrotto), lights (lite panels), mic boom, shock mount, cables, camera crane (Kessler), cases, Steadycam vest stabilizer system, power supplies... and be sure whatever computer you plan to edit on can deal with the captured video - same with the editing application you plan to use.

What protective gear should I get for my camcorder?
Q. I'm planning on filming hurricanes and tornadoes on my camcorder. My camcorder is a sony and the model number is drv-trv 830. What rain gear and other protective gear should I buy? Sources?

A. It depends how much you want to try to protect the gear.

There are hard cases available that are generally used for underwater use.

There are flexible cases that aren't necessarily THAT "hardened".

Then there are "rain capes"...

I think you want the flexible case - but that is just my opinion...
Check out http://ewa-marine.com/

The DCR-TRV830 uses the VST case (I could not find a DRV-TRV830 here or at Sony - I hope I got the right one for you.)

Alert: These things are not inexpensive.

what is the best way to store videos off of this camera? DVD, external hard drive, or on SD cards?
Q. I take lots of video, am a veteran 8 mm tape person, so this SD digital thing is still new to me. I take lots of video, in short increments, of my kids sports, events, etc. I'd like to store them on DVD to make labels for ease of use down the road. Is this a hard process? Do I need any special devices? Any help would be so much appreciated!
The camera is a Sony Handycam DCR-SX45!

A. what you have is a 30 GB HDD camera. if you archive on DVD you must take into account that DVD only holds 2 GB of data. also if you put into the standard DVD format that will play on your TV set, then it will be hard to rip if you want to use for editing later on. if you keep in the original format used in the camcorder as a DVD-rom, then it won't play on your TV set, but will be ready to edit on your computer. What might be the best archive for your circumstances is to get a 500 GB external USB media drive. Using a hard drive means you can also store text files to record important ancillary info like names of people, dates, events and such. and even put photos of the same events in a separate folder.

What do you like about your digital video camera?

Q. Looking to purchase a digital video camera for general home use. I want it to have great zoom for capturing wildlife, great audio capture and HD video. I want my video productions to be as close to professional as possible from my camera recordings.

What camera do you use & why?
What do you like about it?
What don't you like about it?
How user friendly is your camera?
How computer compatible?
What camera do you recommend?

A. I got a JVC Everio Camcorder (can't remember the product code) and its reasonably priced. For under $200, I considered it a wise investment.

What I like about it is it has 30GB internal memory, so I don't have to pack extra tapes or discs. 30gig is big enough .. at least for me.

What don't I like? Nothing .. for me, its perfect in every sense. It suits my needs in taking stills and videos. I'm having fun with it.

How user-friendly ? Very user-friendly. Small, compact .. like the saying goes "Small but Terrible" its not a hassle when you have to move into a crowd .. so small yet so powerful and very efficient.

How computer compatible .. Very compatible .. all I do is plug and play .. and I get my videos transferred to my computer and either edit the vids or burn them into discs. Never had a problem. I guess I got lucky.

What camera for recommendation? A JVC Everio, of course, since I own one. However, its still up to you, since you're the one buying and when you do, consider all the aspects of the product and make sure it suits your needs first.

Good luck with your purchase and hope you get a good one.

Im buying A camcorder and need to know the best typ for my needs mentioned?
Q. Ok guys, I really need some "specific" advice. I own a website that takes pictures and videos in nightclub environments and I have been starting to put more videos on the website. i eventually convert the video from whatever source to flash video and stream it on the site. i have been recently just using my point and shoot digital snapshot camera that has the video feature ( 640 by 480) to take the clips but OBVIOUSLY the video is horrible and the sound is even worse. what i really need is a small camcorder.
basically after i shoot the videos, i will have to transfer them to my pc and then ill eventually encode them to flash.

what is the best camera format for this need. mini dv? harddrive type? etc. i basically need a small camcorder that shoots great video and audio ( good with lo light) and is not killer expensive with the best format for editing later.. any specific models come to mind? also, do I really need HIGH-Def?

A. Get an HDD camcorder. if you are transferring it to the PC regularly, I'd highly recommend it.

Help with choosing a camcorder with good sound quality?

Q. Ok, I've asked questions about camcorders, microphones, and webcams that have good sound quality. And I've found the perfect thing, a Panasonic HDC-SD100 HD Digital Camcorder. But guess what, it costs a little less than 1000 dollars. And thats too much. Is there any other camcorders that are similar to this one, but has a little smaller price tag? I'm okay with bad video quality, but I need the sound quality.

A. Here's a bit of camcorder insight: no matter how much you spend on a camcorder, the built-in mic sucks! Obviously some are better than others, but none would be sufficient for real professional stuff. Built-in mics have an omni-directional pickup pattern which means it picks up sound in every direction. It sounds nice, but it's not. You pick up annoying background noise, and the overall sound is unfocused and quite has quite a bit of echo. So my advice is to get the cheapest camcorder with a 3.5mm mini-stereo microphone input which will allow you to connect external mics...

Some cheap** ones: Canon ZR series (starting at $200-ish. But not all have the mic input, so make sure of that. I know the ZR40 has one, as well as the newer models the ZR900 and ZR930. If I'm correct, the older models of Canon Opturas have them as well (like the Optura 10). I believe the Panasonic PV GS500-ish (can't remember the exact number) has one too.
Your cheapest option is to get the ZR900 (or if you can find a used model of the ZR40 or Optura 10).

Now that you've save a lot o money, you have more to spend on a good external mic. If you want to go the cheap route, get a nice mini-stereo shotgun:
1) RODE VideoMic
2) Sennheiser MKE300
3) Azden SGM-X
4) Audio-Technica ATR-55

If you want the absolute best audio, get an XLR adapter (the good kind, not those crappy XLR female to mini-male cables) like those made by Beachtek for around $180, and get a pro XLR mic:
1) Sennheiser ME66
2) RODE NTG-2 (or NTG-1)

the Azden SGM-1X is pretty good too, and cheap :)

Hope that helps!!!

Can someone help me find a camcorder that allows for good sound quality?
Q. Hi!

I'm looking for a camcorder cheaper than £350 that has good sound quality, as I want to record live classical music. I know this means I need an external mic, so if someone knows of a camcorder which is good and allows for external mic, plus a mic worth spending money on, please let me know :)

thanks!

A. What is needed is manual audio gain control and good location of the mic(s).

It also depends on what sort of classical music. Solo, duet, trio, quartet, chamber music, etc. will have requirements different than a full orchestra.

There are a few entry level Canon camcorders (FS series, maybe one in the MV series) that have a 1/8" (3.5mm) stereo mic jack. But they do not have manual audio gain control.

The reason you need manual audio gain control is that even acoustic - classical - music can get loud enough to overdrive the automatic audio gain circuit - the result will be muddy audio and "static" (audio peaking at the loud passages).

Just because a camcorder has a mic jack, that does not mean it also has manual audio control.

It is possible to use the camcorder's internal built-in mics successfully - but the location of the camcorder (hence the location of the mics) is important because of the stereo separation and balance. With external mics, they can be located away from the camcorder... But even built-in mics need manual audio control. I guess the point I am trying to make is external mics are not a "hard and fast rule".

There are some Sony camcorders in your budget range that have a very rudimentary "MicRefLevel" menu toggle for "Normal" or "Low" gain. I am not aware of any SOny camcorders in your budget range that have an audio-in jack. There are some Canon camcorders in your price range that have a similar "Mic Attenuation" toggle.

The least expensive camcorder - of which I am am aware - with a mic jack and more granular manual audio control is the Canon HV40.

Another option is to use whatever camcorder you want - but record the audio with an external audio "field recorder" like those from Zoom, Edirol, Tascam, M-Audio and many others. These generally have built-in mics - and can connect external mics if required. All have manual audio control. When you import the video for editing, import the audio from the field recorder, sync the audio, then mute the audio that came in with the video...

Can I connect an external mic to a camcorder without a mic jack but with a headphone jack?

Q. I have a camcorder that allows me to connect my headphones, but it has no mic jack, is it still possible to connect an external mic?

I have a AIPTEK p-HD(portable high definition) camcorder

A. A headphone socket is only for plugging headphones into and not a microphone. As said above you may be able to hard wire a microphone to the inside of your camcorder but you will need to know what you are doing and it will invalidate your warranty. Better get a camcorder with a mic socket.

Can I hook an external microphone to a camcorder with no external mic jack?
Q. Is there any kind of adaptor or wireless mic? I have a Sony Handycam DCR-HC52.

A. No... Not only does the HC52 not have a mic jack, but it does not have the Sony Active Interface Shoe, either - no external mic use is possible.

What is the best camcorder/camera for low light situations?

Q. I plan on doing some YouTube videos in the future, but the problem is that my room is kinda dark, and my cellphone is terrible when it comes to dark areas. Are there any cameras for $200 or under for low light situations?
If not in my price range, anything not too expensive is fine.

A. Your question #1: What is the best camcorder/camera for low light situations?
Response: Any camcorder with a large lens diameter (to let light in to the camcorder/camera) and large imaging chip (to process what little light comes in through the lens when it is dark.

Your question #2: "Are there any cameras for $200 or under for low light situations?"
Response: No.

"not too expensive" means different things to different people.

Consumer grade camcorders start at the low end with small (less than 30mm) diameter lenses and small (less than 1/6") single imaging chip. As the price goes up, the lens diameters and imaging chips get larger. At around $400, the lens diameter is around 37mm and the imaging chips can get as large as 1/4". At around $800 the lens diameter is around 43mm and the imaging chips approach 1/3". At around $1,200 the lens diameter is around 58mm and the imaging chips are around 1/3". As you continue up the price spectrum to high-end consumer (sometimes called "prosumer") camcorders, $3,000 finds 72mm lens diameter with 3CCD or 3CMOS 1/3" imaging chip arrays - these do quite well under low-light conditions.

So... what can you do if you can't afford a camcorder/camera that can behave well under low light conditions? It depends what you are capturing to video, but one relatively easy way (assuming you will be editing the video with a half decent editor) is to add LOTS of light so your room is no longer dark - then, using your editor, make it look dark... This is call shooting "day for night".
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4MaC44MU4iw

When you go this route, use whatever camera/camcorder you want - and make the investment in lighting and a decent video editor - not a camera/camcorder. For $200, assuming your computer has a fast CPU, 4 gig RAM or more and lots of hard drive space - Sony Vegas is affordable and a couple or three worklights from the hardware store like
http://www.amazon.com/Voltec-08-00210-500-Watt-Portable-Worklight/dp/B004ZMUHBG
would be plenty.

Any cheaper alternatives to the Canon EOS 7D?
Q. The cheapest I could find for that product was £1200 and my budget is realistically half that. Was wondering if there was any camcorders that produced the same beautiful HD videos as this camera with the same adjustable features such as ISO etc. I'm willing to lose out on a decent camera, but I'm looking for a robust camcorder with a long battery life and decent features for under £800. Thanks.

A. Unfortunately there is no camcorder in that price range that will give you the manual abilities of the 7d or the control over the depth of field that allows you to have true film-like results at 1080P. But, take a look at the new Canon Vixia camcorders. They will be in your price range and will deliver very good video, they just wont allow you the same flexibility you will get from the 7D.

If you dont mind shooting 720P, then your best bet is the Canon T1i. Is takes fantastic 720P video. Is does not have the ability take external microphones, so you are either stuck with on board sound or buy something like a Zoom H4N to record sound from external mics.

Ultimately, if 720P is ok, then the T1i is your best option. (And its a pretty darn good photo camera too).

Is there a stand alone light for my camcorder?

Q. i bought myself a camcorder a panasonic one and it doesnt have a light for night shooting. is there a stand alone light that i can attach to it? if so where can i get it?

A. Sima makes the SL-20LX Ultra Bright Video Light. It's inexpensive and made for more up-close shots.

For a step-up, check out the Bescor MX-601. I have one and it works pretty good, when needed.

How do you clean a camcorder lens if it gets dirty with a finger print?

Q. Well, my camcorder has accidently got a finger print and it smudges up the videos i take. I hear you need a special type of cloth with which to clean. can someone help me out?

A. you can use any type of cloth thats made for glasses (like those microfiber ones). tissue paper works well too (not tissues, tissue paper), thats what we always used in photo class for our cameras

What is the best camcorder $300 and under for low light lov budget film?
Q. I an currently writing a script for a fan film based on The Crow. I cannot seem to find a low budget camcorder with good software and low light capability. Most of the film will be shot at night and I want a good clear picture in low light and it has to work with windows movie maker!
I'd appreciate any suggestions cause I can't find anything in my price range.

A. Good low light video capture behavior = large lenses and large imaging chip systems.

Big glass and big chips are expensive. There are no "inexpensive" camcorder with lenses larger than 60mm lens filter diameter + 3CCD (or 3CMOS) imaging chips (1/3" or larger) which is why you can't find any.

Versions of MovieMaker before Windows 7 cannot deal with AVCHD compressed MTS files unless they are transcoded first. Only certain combinations of of Windows 7 and MovieMaker Live can deal with AVCHD/MTS files... No version of MovieMaker will deal with MOV files (unless transcoded, first). Only certain configurations of MovieMaker will deal with AVI files. So I'll say any consumer camcorder or camera that captures high definition video to flash memory or hard disc drive is not do-able because dealing directly with MovieMaker won't happen. No one should ever waste their $ on a DVD based camcorder. As for miniDV tape, MovieMaker can't deal with HDV. But, if the computer has a firewire port, it can deal with importing standard definition DV files. Certain versions of MovieMaker can deal with the MPG files from some consumer cams - no version of MovieMaker can deal with standard definition MOD files...

For $300, the Canon FS series standard def flash memory cams are OK - and they can do stndard definition widescreen - but you will need to use a transcoder like MPEG StreamClip www.squared5.com or HandBrake www.handbrake.fr to convert the files to WMV format so MovieMaker can deal with them.

Good luck!

What camcorder takes the best video in the dark?

Q. I am trying to find a camcorder to buy for ghost hunting which requires being in the dark... What camera is the best quality dark shot?

A. Hi C!
I think its cool you're ghost hunting. It's been a passion of mine for the past 2 years. I work in an old school building that some suspect is haunted. I have taken some interesting video footage there and submitted it to some ghost video sites.
To get back to your question, I use the JVC GZ-HD300A Everio 60GB Hard Drive Camcorder. I've used other inferior cameras which are fine in the daylight but this cam has the best twilight and night mode out there.
Believe me, I know how it feels to miss a chance at filming something amazing because I don't have the right camera. You can find this camcorder at http://offto.net/onsalecom/ for a very competitive price.
Just search "camcorders" and click "JVC"
I got it from their site after shopping around. They shipped it quick and reliably and their customer service is excellent.
Good luck, and drop me a line and let me know if you catch anything paranormal on film.

All the best, Jimmy

What is the best camcorder to record a basic training graduation?
Q. My mom wants to purchase a new camcorder to use at my basic training graduation for the Air Force. I am ashamed to admit, I dont know a thing about camcorders. I did some researched and talked to a few people who recently purchased a camcorder and I'm still very fuzzy. Does anyone have any suggestions? Specific brand and model? Maybe, a general rule of thumb or ruleS of thumb for purchasing a GOOD quality camcorder.

A. Basic training for camcorder purchase: There are two categories of camcorders STANDARD definition and and HIGH Definition. There are 4 recording formats for camcorders. 1) MiniDV tape 2) DVD 3)Hard Disk Drive or HDD and 4) Flash Drive.

Note as of February 2009, High Definition is the rule, standard broadcast TV will no longer exist, you will need to aquire a converter box just to watch regular broadcast television such as Oprah or whatever. So, eventually you will get an HD television. So, do you really want to purchase Standard Definition camcorder? Prices range $200 - $600.

MiniDV tape requires you to dub from camcorder to TV or computer via hookup to watch. 60 minute recording tapes.

DVD records only 30 minutes per side or disk. MUST finalize disk on camcorder BEFORE you can view on DVD player. No cables, but necessary to purchase new media all the time. $400 - $600 Standard...$700+ for HD.

HDD or Hard Disk Drive camcorders have 20 - 120 GB of internal memory, thats 6 hours to 40 hours of video time. But, you must download to computer to burn DVD/CD or purchase a separate DVD burner to archieve your videos off of HDD camcorder. $450 - $550 Standard...$850+ for HD.

Flash Drive camcorders are currently Canon, Sony or Samsung. These have some internal and primarily external removable memory such as Secure Disk memory card or Sony Memory Stick. These units are strickly playback or USB download to computer to burn a cd/DVD disk. $800+.

Note: Sony Blueray for High Definition is the winner of the format war for HD. All burners will be for Blue Ray recording.

ps...better have an updated computer to handle the RAM for video burning or DVR recording to at least archieve your videos.

Recommend Sony SR10 HDD. Sony has it all from lens to living room system.

Congrats on USAF boot camp completion. Fly High!

Using a HD 720p camcorder, What size SD card should I buy?

Q. Using a HD 720p camcorder, What size SD card should I buy?

I am thinking of buying a Sanyo Xacti VPC-TH1 High Definition camcorder and I dont know what size SD card to buy...

I want to record about 2 hours in 720p so which size should I get?
Is there any rough kind of guide to follow?

A. the camera specs appear to indicated that it is designed for 16 GB memory cards. the battery is good for 200 minutes, and 16 GB is 230 minutes of HD video. However if you plan on using the still photo capability of the camera, that will reduce the minutes of available video. An 8 GB card will be just short of 2 hours of HD video.

How Much Would You Pay For A Camera?
Q. So I have this camcorder (Sanyo Xacti HD2000) I want to list on ebay.
It's faulty but will only cost £30 to fix.
It comes with the original boxing, a wide angle lens, a video mic set and an extra case for it.
How much do you think I should sell it for on ebay?

Thanks for your help.

A. The Sanyo Xacti HD2000 sells new for about $400.00 (302.609 EUR) here in the US. Most people will not buy a camcorder or other type of device like a camera if it doesn't work properly unless they want it for parts. You are best to have it fixed and then sell it and hopefully recoup your costs and maybe get a little more. Expect to get about 50% of the cost of a new one.

A. I have a decent youtube account too, i would recommend getting a cheapish, sony camera. Make sure it has at LEAST 40x OPTICAL zoom, and 2000Digital zoom. you should fine one on ebay or amazon, or at best buy or some store like that.

How can I remove microphone hiss?

Q. I am trying to record my friends and I playing board games. I have bought a Sony CX380 camcorder for HD video, CAD GXL3000 condenser microphone (for picking up our voices that are about 3-5 feet away), and a Behringer Xenyx 802 mixer (to power the Microphone through Phantom power). No matter what settings I put my camcorder, microphone, and mixer to, I get a lot of hiss in the recording. Has anyone had this happen and how did you solve this problem? I know the camcorder has plug-in power (PiP) but I can't find evidence on any forums that suggest this could be a problem and there are no settings that I could find in the camcorder to turn off PiP.
Also, I want to fix the problem at the source. Using programs for 'Noise Reduction' alter the sound file slightly and cause de-synching with the video.

A. The problem is in using the microphone jack of the recorder to accept the output from the mixer. The microphone input is designed for the low level signal of a microphone - the mixer is line level. No matter how you adjust the mixer, the camcorder is going to record the noise floor of the mixer.

One work-around would be to use an attenuating patch cord between the mixer and the camcorder.

The other would be to use the external Sony stereo microphone, which is what the PIP is provided for. PIP is not the same as the 48 volt phantom power as provided at the XLR connection at the mixer.

Can I use the audio from this microphone and video from this camera?
Q. Or do I have to use the camcorder's microphone?

Camcorder:
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Sony-CX220-HD-Camcorder-Optical-Black/dp/B00AWME0P2/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1367074654&sr=8-1&keywords=camcorder

Microphone:
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Samson-CO1U-Studio-Condenser-Microphone/dp/B000PTF0E2/ref=sr_1_4?s=computers&ie=UTF8&qid=1367671413&sr=1-4&keywords=microphone+for+voice+recording
I could record the audio separately with like Audacity or something, but I really don't want to have to sync it.

A. The Sony HDR-CX220 does not have a mic input. The USB port cannot provide audio-in because the USB port is used for transferring data (video and audio) from the internal memory or flash memory card. Recording the audio separately, then synching when editing is your only option.

How can I make my Canon Vixia HF R100 import to my Mac?

Q. Canon insists its Vixia HF R100 camcorder works with Mac and iMovie. I have not found success with it. What do I need to do to import movies and photos from it to use in iMovie?

A. You did not tell us which Mac or which version iMovie. We do not have enough information to help you.

BUT - if your Mac is within about a year old and is running iMovie 09, connect the HF R100's USB port to the Mac's USB port, connect the AC power supply to the camcorder. Launch iMovie. Place the camcorder in "Play" mode. Use iMovie's "Log & Capture" selection under File.

If that still does not work, I presume you are able to get the R100's memory to mount and you have located the MTS files... Copy these to the Mac.

Download and install MPEG StreamClip
http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/video/mpegstreamclip.html
Transcode the files from MTS to high quality MP4 or MOV files. After transcoding, quit MPEG StreamClip, Launch iMovie and drag the transcoded files to the Capture or Sequence area of iMovie.

Do the flip camcorders only work on Mac computers?
Q. Or do they work on all types? Because I have a Compaq with Windows Vista and I want to make sure that the UltraHD flip camcorder will work on it before I buy it.

A. They work on both.

Needing help in picking a new camcorder and what type to buy?

Q. I am looking to purchase a new camcorder. I currently own a panasonic VHS-C camcorder. Right now I am recording on these tapes and then dubbing them with my DVD recorder.
I run my own website and I want to put videos on my website. Here is what I would need:
- Good night recording, for fireworks and such
- Good day quality recording
- Image stabilization
- Good sound recording
- Fairly easy to use
- Prefer small over large body
- Ability to put video onto website pretty easily, not a must
- Good battery life
- Good zoom

Still photos are not important to me.

I heard that with Mini DV you can plug into DVD recorder with a cable and record the video onto the DVD. I was originally looking into a DVD-cam, but the DVD-cam reviews don't seem to be good. I don't know which I should get. I'm also not sure which models are the best.

I prefer to stay under $400, so I would like to know the best models under $400, I'm willing to go higher, so better models would be welcome.
Editing is not something I will need to do with my video, so I don't think that a hard drive cam is right for me.

The most important things for me is the overall video quality, something that record good/great in most situations.

Second, I want to be able to get my video on media that is universal. This is why the DVD cam interested me at first, but have since changed my mind based on reviews. But I heard on TV that there is a cable that can be plugged into my DVD player and I can record directly from the camera to DVD. Is this true and if so, is this cable included?

Any more advice on what camera to get would really be appreciated. I'm trying to get an idea of my options before I make my purchase.

A. I believe that this Camcorder is calling your name out!!!
Check it Out!

What is a good camera for taking skateboarding stills?
Q. I have been filming with a camcorder for a while but i would like to start taking stills. I was thinking of mabe getting the Canon EOS Rebel T1i
What do you guys think?

A. I think Jim is very correct about the goodness of a Canon Rebel. However, I have been using a much more inexpensive camera that takes beautiful still shots. It is in fact not a digital SLR, so you don't need to worry about buying a very expensive lens with adequate zoom. The Camera I have is a Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ28 and it has a 18 power zoom with very crisp image stabilization. It shoots the same 10.1 megapixles as the Canon Rebel and provides many shooting modes. Another good feature about this camera is that it can even shoot HD video in a widescreen format. This Panasonic Lumix I have costs almost half as much as the Rebel and is more portable, lightweight, and has a excellent zoom range built in. A very nice site helped me make a decision on this camera which is www.cameralabs.com
for a review on it: http://www.cameralabs.com/reviews/Panasonic_Lumix_DMC_FZ28/

Also when you're on this review page be sure to check out the video tour tab.
I have used this camera for filming video and pictures of my friends skating. It works very well for skating and keeps my shots stable while I'm riding my longboard and while I focus the lens on my friends skating while they are moving. As you can see, this camera is very capable because I can move, my friends can move and the camera remains with a clear and sharp image. When you first get the camera, be sure you turn on auto focus, and have image stabilization on. Another nice thing about this groovy camera is when you take pictures in certain modes, it will track the faces of people so you'll get a good shot. I love this camera! You can find it on amazon for about $275. Hope this helps!

PROs AND CONs OF BB CURVE vs. IPHONE 4?

Q. maybe a website link or just your personal opinion and why....

thanks in advance ;)

A. BB Curve
Pros :
Up to10 email addresses (gmail, hotmail, yahoo, etc, get your emails the way you get a text message)
Enterprise Service (corporate email on your device)
2.0 mega pix camera and camcorder
Amazing Battery life for a PDA
3.5 head Phone Jack
External Memory Card (max 16 gig)
Downloadable apps
Cut and paste (on any text field)
Instant Messenger (yahoo, Gtalk, AIM, BBM)
Documents to go
Download email attachments (pic’s, xl, doc, pp)
Multitasking

Cons:
Takes forever to power up
Web browser needs work (not fully HTML)
Not enough on board memory (96 Megs)
Apps don’t save to the extended memory card
Randomly deletes messages and call log due to low memory
Hour glasses due to low memory
Trackball gets stuck (secret to fixing that, put spit on your finger and wiggle the trackball nasty but it works

Iphone 4 :
Pros :
Improved camera performance. The camera on the iPhone 3G3 performs an order of magnitude faster than it did with software 3.1.3. It is quicker to focus, quicker to take pictures, and quicker to get back to the capture screen. It also now has a digital zoom feature.
2. Folders. Other smartphone platforms have had folder support from Day 1. Now, in its fourth generation software, so does the iPhone. It is visually pleasing, and I like the way they work. I especially like to be able to reduce the number of home screens I am using by stuffing apps into the folders.

Dig deep on passwords, encryption, management, and more

9 Must-Have Mobile Security Features

3. Spell check. When composing messages, the iPhone now goes beyond the predictive software it had been using to aid typing. It now has a spell check that lets you select the word you really mean to type instead of arbitrarily choosing one for you.

4. Unified inbox. I have a lot of email accounts. One thing I've always liked about BlackBerries is their support for a unified inbox -- all the emails go to a single master inbox rather than separate inboxes. iOS 4 now supports this, too. For the serial email addict who has way too many email accounts, this makes checking them all just a bit easier from the iPhone.

5. Multitasking. It's not a perfect implementation, and I have yet to put it through any real battery tests, but it is nice to have multitasking that works on the iPhone. Switching between apps is faster and more seamless. It also preserves the "state" of each app. If you're in the middle of composing an email, it doesn't lose or delete the email if you switch over to the browser, etc. I expect as more apps are enabled with background support, multitasking's true benefits will become clearer.

Cons:
1. Semi-threaded email. Apple has brought threaded email to the iPhone's email inbox, but it doesn't quite go far enough. In Gmail, for example, every email that has the same subject is lumped together in a threaded conversation so it is easier to see all the messages. The iPhone attempts to do this, but falls short. The threaded feature will show users all the messages in a conversation that they've received, but not the ones they've sent. That means you're really only seeing half the conversation.

2. No real iPod improvements. Access to the iPod has been improved somewhat from the home screen, but the player itself is pretty much identical to what's been available on the iPhone for three years. The biggest missing feature? A user-adjustable graphic equalizer. It does, however, have better support for creating playlists.

3. No new additional ringers/alerts. This one is a personal pet peeve of mine. iOS4 has all the exact same (lame) ringtones and alert tones that the original iPhone had three years ago. Sure, you could choose to pay for ringtones from the iTunes Music Store, or even create your own. But seriously, Apple, couldn't you add a few new ones into the mix?

4. No lock screen improvements. Apple has done nothing to change the lock screen of the iPhone. You still have to fully unlock the device to interact with missed messages, calls, voicemails, etc.

5. Still no attachment support in email. One of the email app's biggest failings is the inability to attach something to the message after you've started composing it. Instead, you have to go to your photo library, for example, choose the photo you want, and then choose to attach it to an email. It limits the iPhone's abilities in the enterprise, if you ask me, which often require files be passed back and forth. It's a weird bug that I hope garners Apple's attention at some point in the future.

Overall, the improvements in iOS 4 are incremental. Sure, Apple hasn't addressed everything, but it has addressed a lot. The software can only get better, but the competition isn't as far behind as it used to be.
