Need opinions on the best camcorders for under $400...?
Q. I am looking for a good camcorder between the $200-$400 range. I am getting up early to take advantage of the black Friday deals. Looking at all the millions of reviews and ratings on the millions of different types of camcorders is starting to give me a migraine. Two important functions I am looking for is decent recording time and easy to transfer to computer. All suggestions and opinions will be greatly appreciated! Thank you and Happy Thanksgiving!
I am kinda leaning toward either the Canon ZR 500 or the Panasonic SDR-S7K, any opinions on these?

Panasonic SDR-H60 60 GB Hard Drive Camcorder with 50x Optical Image Stabilized Zoom
for 329.00

The SDR-H60's 50x optical zoom lens has the power you need to take dramatic close-ups or get remarkable shots of even distant subjects. Panasonic's Advanced Optical Image Stabilization (O.I.S.) suppresses the effects of handshake as you shoot. The system uses gyro sensors to detect handshake, then shifts a lens and adjusts the optical axis to compensate. The SDR-H60's 60GB internal hard disk drive lets you record continuously for up to 54 hours in LP mode without changing a disc, tape or other recording media. Panasonic's Anti-Shock Shield helps protect recorded video data from damage due to jolts and impact. The Drop Detect function senses if the camera is falling and moves the head away from the hard disk. You can transfer the motion-image data from the SD card or the camcorder's hard drive right to your PC using your USB port. With the included VideoCam Suite 1.0 software, you can easily put scenes in a different order and delete the ones you don't want. What's a good quality camcorder for under $300?

Q. I need recommendations for camcorder that is easy for a first timer, has good sound and video quality, and may be hooked up to a computer without having the hassle of tapes and what not. I'd really like to keep it under three hundred dollars. The cheaper, the better!

A. For under $300 I would suggest JVC Everio MS120 Dual Flash Camcorder
40x Dynamic Zoom with Konica Minolta lens
Laser-touch operation with sub-trigger and zoom
One-touch upload to YouTube
Capture video to SD/SDHC memory cards

Great Camcorder under 300?!?
Q. I'd like a camera which shoots 24p has great picture and sound quality.
I'm a young indie filmmaker, so I make short skits etc.
I really emphasise great pic and sound quality to have my vids looking professional.
I was considering the Canon Vixia HF R 20/200 but can't find it anywhere available to Ireland .
Suggestions?

A. Hi Dillon:

The Canon "Vixia" line is for USA & Japan. You want the "Legria" models (e.g., Legria HF-R26 ,-R28, and -M400), which are for the UK/Ireland (and Europe) markets. Some Canon model #'s are available in both versions, others have USA-only and UK/Europe-only models.

Since you are in Ireland, and Y!A is a world-wide forum, it helps if you say "under £300" or "under 300 Euros" or whatever currency you mean, otherwise most of us Yahooligans are in the US and think "USD dollars".

For the best picture quality in a consumer-priced model, I'd recommend the Canon HV40, which is sold in both the Vixia and Legria lines, and uses both miniDV tape (best fidelity with lossless compression) and SD card storage (next-best quality). It also allows external audio from mikes and mixers, for really good sound.

And don't get caught up in the whole "cinema look" 24p thing. That's a high-end digital cinema "hype" setting that few consumer-level models will shoot at (nor need to). I don't see a teenage filmmaker ever wanting to pay for a 35mm 24fps film transfer print. Plus, there's a lot more to capturing "that film look" than just frame-rate, which you won't find in a non-pro model. Shoot at 25p or 50p (PAL TVs) or 30p/60p (NTSC TVs) and enjoy the more fluid motion-capture that the higher FPS allow you to capture. (You can always "down-convert" in the editing stage.)

hope this helps,
--Dennis C.

What video camera from Best buy under 300$ that will record good quality of a garage band and guitar playing?

Q. What video camera from Best buy under 300$ that will record good quality of a garage band and guitar playing?
Or if there is a better one at wal-mart/circuit city/ whatever that has good sound quality for recording loud guitar distortion noises/garage band practices that is under or near 300$, please post it here

thanks!

A. Your problem will be the sound, not the video. Any camcorder at the lower end of the market is easily overwhelmed by volume levels of the sort you encounter at a gig or rehearsal. Find one that has a seperate audio input (preferably stereo) and run a line out of the desk. Failing that use an external mike and attenuate the signal before it hits the camera.

What is the cheapest camcorder with slow motion capacity?
Q. I would like a camcorder for my birthday that has slow motion capacity. Under 300 dollars would be useful, but I know there aren't that many at that price. I want the best quality, however, for that price range. I don't want a camera with 5 fps, god no.

A. Recording at a slow frame rate won't provide you with very good slow motion playback. You want to record at a high frame rate...

For example, some Sony camcorders have a "SmoothSlowRecord" feature that allows fast frame rate capture (120 fps) for a 3 second burst. When played back at NTSC standard 30 fps, the playback takes 12 seconds (or 25% of the original speed). The Casio Exilim line has longer high frame rate capture.

If you just use the camcorder's 30 fps capture and have the video editor slow the playback, when you get to about 15 fps (or 50% of the original speed) is when the video starts being a bit jerky...

Photron and Vision Research (and others) make high speed cameras that can do 300 fps, 1,000 fps and even 3,000 fps or higher - they are expensive.

What is a good digital camcorder?

Q. what is a good digital camcorder for under 300 bucks? that records good quality. give me some brands thanks. oh and that takes pictures too.
all i want it for is to record stupid videos to put up like on youtube.com and stuff like that nothing for professional recording or anything just to mess around with and catch stupid stuff on cam.

A. In General the best Digital Camcorder in the market is SONY. They have a lot of very good models. Then comes Panasonic, Cannon, JVC etc
Go to best buy.com and you will find selection under $300, but mostly Samsung & JVC.
If you are going to just use it every now and then, then go for JVC better than Samsung, but for sure think about the SONY.

What's an affordable camcorder to film hunts?
Q. My brother and I are planning on filming our hunting trips this upcoming fall. Looking for a good quality camera for under $300. Must have high zoom capability (optical) and preferably water proof (resistant).

One that I am interested in is the sony handycam DCR-DVD650, any input on this model will be helpfull.

A. You may want to get something that is not a DVD or HDD (Hard Disk Drive) cam which are subject to failure should the camera be dropped or abruptly jolted. And HDD drives can fail at high altitudes. DVD cams are not easy to access (edit) your final video on disk (you have to use a ripper program). Also moving drives use more battery consumption. For going out in the field on a hunt, you would want to use a flash memory camcorder. Some are dual-flash which can record your video on internal memory or to a memory card. A cam that would work for you in your budget would be something like the Canon VIXIA HF R100. It records in HD to memeory cards. It has a 20x optical zoom.

im looking for a camera/camcorder-under $300- good quality and auto focus for recording makeup tutorials?
Q. I want to start making makeup tutorials on YT, but need a good camcorder first. I need it to be under $300, have good quality and great auto focus. thanks

A. The last thing you should want if your doing that type of video, is Auto focus.

You should be more concerned if the camcorder has a Manual Mode.

With Manual Mode, when shooting your video, when your showing a product to your viewers, when you shove something close to lens, the camcorder will not go into fits trying to focus like it would if you had the camcorder in Easy or Auto Mode.. Also, in Manual Mode, when you did shove that item up to the lens, both the item and you would be in focus, at the same time, That is the way you would be shooting a make up video.
