iMovie: How do I synch 'green screen' background with the foreground?
Q. I have had success with the 'green screen' on iMovie, except synching is difficult. Often the background will appear a few frames before the scene change. You can slide the scenes around, but this often changes other things. Precision Editor seems to only complicate things. Is there a feature to iMovie that will synch them?

A. This might be related to the codecs which the Event clips have been compressed with. The popular codecs MPEG-4 and H.264 use so-called 'interframe' compression methods, which means that to decode one frame, the editing software has to include another keyframe in the calculations. This steps up the complexity of the necessary calculations, and it can also bog down the editing software (playback and clip skimming gets choppy/not instantly responsive.) Moreover, precise frame-by-frame editing might get difficult, especially with additional effects.

So, check if the clips are compressed with these editing-unfriendly MPEG-4 or H.264 codecs (open them as files in QuickTime Player and press Cmd-i to display the specs.) If they are, transcode them using a editing-friendly codec. To do this, use MPEG Streamclip. Download it, open the video files with it and choose File->Export to QuickTime. In the options window, choose 'Apple Intermediate Codec' from the drop-down menu, select the Frame Size that says '… (unscaled)' and click on 'Make Movie'. The resulting file will be 4 to 8 times larger than than the MP4/H.264 file, so make sure you have plenty of space left on the hard drive. When done, import the files in iMovie and remove the old clips.

MPEG-Streamclip is freeware: http://www.squared5.com/svideo/mpeg-streamclip-mac.html
The Apple Intermediate Codec is already installed on your Mac (QuickTime component) if iLife/iMovie is installed. iMovie uses it when importing HD video directly from camcorders. It's an 'intra-frame' codec where all frames can be processed without using another keyframe.
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2704?viewlocale=en_US

UPDATE:
In iMovie '11 you can use 'File >Optimize Video > Full Original Size' to transcode an already imported event clip. So you don't have to go through MPEG Streamclip. The original file will not be erased but moved into a new folder that iMovie creates within the Movies folder, named iMovie Original Movies.

Can I use a different brand other than a Sony memory card for a Sony camcorder?

Q. I just ordered a Sony Handycam HD 5X Optical Zoom 2.5 in. LCD Camcorder - Purple, and I wanted to know if I could use some other brand of memory card than Sony. Like, could I use a SanDisk?

A. You have to buy a memory stick. I used a lexar memory stick in my sony camera. As long as it's a memory stick and not an xd or sd or sdhc, then you should be ok.

How to get my webcam option on my camcorder to work?
Q. I have a Gigaware 5-Megapixel HD 1080p Camcorder with 3.0" Touchscreen which is supposed to have a webcam option. I installed the driver CD that came with it and every time I try to launch the webcam option it says it is not connected or is being used. Anyone know how to get it working?

A. You need to check in the camera settings. There should be an option of when connected to computer you want to use it as USB Storage device or Web cam.

Or something like use as webcam..maybe you have to set it up...

Is it possible to buy a cable for a usb microphone so I can hook it up to my camcorder?

Q. I'm just wondering if such a cable exists. I have a Samson C01U USB Studio Condenser microphone. The connector into the mic itself is not a usb hub. It's a special type of connector (similar to a usb but isn't one). So, is it possible to buy a cable for it so I can hook it up to my external mic jack on my camcorder? Thanks!

A. Nope, not possible for several reasons. The key reason is that this is an electret condenser-type microphone with a built-in preamp that requires power. There would be no place to put batteries or some other source of power to run the preamp.

What is an HD camcorder with and external mic jack and is under 400$?
Q. I make short films and i would like to shoot good quality video with a mic jack but for a cheap price.

A. Just setting the expectation:

"Good quality video for short films" under $400 is unreasonable - assuming the comparison is to what professionals use... generally starting in the $3,000 and above area (not including mics, lights, stands, cables, etc.).

If you are merely looking for video-sharing site quality, AND the lighting is good, then pretty much any camcorder will do... And a mic jack is only 1/2 the equation. The other half means manual audio control. I *think* the Canon HF M series is about as close as I can get... An alternative is to pick any camcorder and record the audio separately (just like the pros), sync the audio when editing...

Whether the investment is cash or time, you get what you pay for.

Tips & advice to buying a waterproof handheld camcorder?

Q. I am looking for a WATERPROOF HANDHELD CAMCORDER for a trip that I am going on. I need tips and advice for what to look for when buying the camcorder. It doesn't matter about cost, I just need to know the suitable quality for going on a vacation, where there is great quality of sound, good picture, can be used when snorkelling, good battery life, etc.

If anyone could give me tips, advice, or their knowledge from personal experiences on what to look for and what sort of brands are good or bad when buying them. Also websites of places I could buy one is good too. Any sort of information or websites where I can research more would be greatly appreciated too.

I would like the style of all of these to see but being waterproof.

I am confused between Fujifilm S2980 and Samsung WB100?
Q. i really cant choose between both, and i can't find helping reviews over the internet, most reviews i found where about ppl who had just bought or received one of the cameras as a gift and were much excited about it!
i want to know if the review of ppl who used it for at least few months, the cons and pros
i know that Samsung has better zoom, and Fujifilm has a view finder but its not that important for me , iam more concerned with good quality that would last for a good period of time , idont wanna buy a camera that breaks down after few months

A. Hi "eman" and welcome to Y!A Camcorders:

You appear to be in Egypt, so I don't know what search engine results you've been getting, but there are some professional reviews on CNet and Engadget, and elsewhere, that you'd find helpful. DP Review (http://dpreview.com) is another good site for digital camera reviews.

One tip: you are asking about two still-cameras (photos not videos) in the Camcorders section. The Y!A Cameras section is where most of the photo camera users hang out. If you're mainly wanting to shoot video, neither is really the best choice for you.

I know a lot of everyday camera users now want just one "gadget" for shooting both photos and videos, but "point & shoot" cameras (or even "bridge cameras" like these two models you are asking about) are a compromise when it comes to video.

My personal opinion, brand-wise, is that Fujifilm (the "Japanese Kodak") has been making cameras a lot longer than Samsung, and Fuji is generally a better choice. Samsung entered the camera market in 1995 when they bought German camera company Rollei, but isn't as well-known for quality lenses like Fuji is. I do not like the Samsung quality in their cellphone construction (owned several).

Here are some reviews, so you can make your own decision:
Fuji S2980 "Ephotozine review" (UK): http://www.ephotozine.com/article/fujifilm-finepix-s2980-digital-camera-review-20407
Samsung WB100 "Engadget review" with many user comments (US): http://www.engadget.com/2012/06/29/samsung-brings-out-wb100-camera-with-26x-lens/
Samsung WB150F "Ephotozine review" (only similar model they reviewed - UK): http://www.ephotozine.com/article/samsung-wb150f-ultra-zoom-review-18632
Samsung & Fuji "CNet side-by-side comparison" WB100 & two S4000-series & a Nikon Coolpix (similar prices): http://reviews.cnet.com/digital-cameras/samsung-wb100-red/4540-6501_7-35430119-4.html

What is the best budget camcorder to live stream high school athletic events?

Q. I need a high quality camcorder no more than $300. We will be using it to stream high school sports live, which brings me to my supplement question. Supposedly, I know someone who knows how to set up this live streaming. But how would this be set up exactly? You would obviously need an internet connection (wifi or ethernet), but I'm not sure we have access to this.... Is it possible to use satellite streaming? Or is that impossible without internet and would it be very expensive? Thanks!

A. If "know someone who knows how to set up this live streaming" then start with them on which camcorders to investigate.

"Satellite streaming" means there is a satellite uplink (including a big dish and transmitters and such) and someone's paid for transponder space and time. It also presumes a "satellite downlinks" and access to processing the feed. I won't assume anything, but I don't *think* this will be available to you.

At $300 you are basically at the entry level for consumer grade camcorders. While these are typically well made electronics, I cannot characterize them as being "high quality" relative to video broadcast standards. Since there are no consumer camcorders that can digitally stream the video over USB until you hit the $800 range (like a Canon HV40, or any others using miniDV tape media storage will work because they use firewire), the best you can do is stream analog video.

So, given your budget - which is likely not enough - we have:

Any camcorder with AV-out. This is pretty much any camcorder - but you need to be sure the AV-out can be used to monitor what the camera can see - again, pretty much any camcorder. This plugs into an "Analog/Digital converter". The A/D converter plugs into the computer. Then the "someone who knows how to set up this live streaming" can finish up... including the connection to the Local Area Network that connects to the internet...

Use a tripod or other steadying device. Consider using a camera that uses a wired remote. The control is mounted to the tripod handle and controls zoom and other things. Use the AC adapter and be sure the camcorder's "auto sleep" is disabled. You are using a camcorder in a manner for which it was not designed.

Some Sony and Canon camcorders have a combo AV/remote port. You can do one or the other - not both at the same time. Some camcorders use a LANC. This will work great. As far as I know, the least expensive with a separate LANC is the Canon HV40... then comes the Sony HDR-FX7 (I think). These are both more than you want to spend.

What pro camcorder can I buy cheap and build up into a higher quality one?
Q. A professional camcorder that I can change up the lense, filter and whatever, on as I get more money. A camera I can eventually get an okay quality with for fictional motion pictures. Advice?

A. Hi Janie:

From your Y!A Profile, you are in the 19- to 21-year age category, so your funds might be somewhat limited, but at least you have a good idea for trying to stretch your initial purchase budget.

Also, I see you are in Sweden, which historically has been a PAL-TV format country, so you might avoid NTSC-only camera models. And rather than try to keep up with Krona and Euro exchange rates, I'll keep my monetary discussions in Dollars.

As far as "true camcorders" which have a higher tariff rate in Europe than Digital SLRs (like the Nikon D-series, the Canon EOS line, or the Sony Alphas) you will find not find many changeable lens models for less than the $2000-$5000 USD price range. (The really good changeable lens video cameras tend to run in the $12,000-$50,000 USD range.)

Having a wide range of interchangeable or upgradeable lenses is one of the appeals of the Digital SLRs (dSLR) that have "movie modes". Plus, the camera bodies are in the hundreds rather than thousands of dollars price range. One downside is the lack of professional audio features, since these are designed primarily as still photo cameras, not movie-making camcorders.

If you care to update your Question with "Additional Details" giving us a more-specific price budget ("cheap" is a very relative term, especially to a young adult) then specific brand and model recommendations can be made.

To stretch your budget money, I'd recommend looking at used-equipment rather than new, when starting out.

hope this helps,

Can i use a digital camera with these features "Full 1080p HD movie recording at 30fps to shoot movie?

Q. Can i use a digital camera with these features "Full 1080p HD movie recording at 30fps to shoot a professional movie say i add external boom mic ad some lens. I shoot local movies and i am planning to buy this digital camera Nikon coolpix px100 to use and shoot movies as it says it could shoot upto a 1080 hd footage. ow i want to cut down the expense of hiring the big shooting cameras which also give me the same hd 1080p as this one could do just the same. Unless there are some hidden explanations but the output is all 1080p right?

A. 1) There is no "Nikon coolpix px100". There is a Nikon Coolpix P100. This is not pro-grade equipment.

2) The "big shooting cameras" use film. Not memory cards. See Panavision and Arri.

3) Some of the the "big shooting cameras" that are digital shoot a 4 times higher resolution for movies. Se Red, Silicon Imaging, Canon EOS Cinema cam (C100, C300, C500) and Black Magic Designs cinema cam (not the pocket cam). They are called "4k cams".

4) The Nikon Coolpix PX100 is a "bridge camera". That means it is in the in-between area - somewhere between a point and shoot and a dSLR. It does not have an interchangeable lens system.

5) These sorts of cameras are designed to capture digital still images. Video capture is a "convenience feature". As with other bridge cameras and dSLRs at the low end, it will overheat after about 20 minutes of continuous video capture. It does not have a mic jack so there is no way to add the external boom mic you think you want to add. You can record the audio externally and synch with the camera-captured audio when editing.

6) The captured video is very compressed AVCHD format into MOV files. My smartphone can capture 1080p video. This does not make it a replacement for high quality, low compression video captured by a proper camcorder when it comes to video and audio quality.

This does not mean the P100 cannot capture decent video - it can - but your expectations of using this consumer grade gear as a replacement for pro-grade high end equipment is misguided.

Lens diameter, imaging chip size, video compression, manual controls and LOTS more - like using stabilizing equipment, different mics (not just a shotgun mic), lighting, cabling, editing and other items go into a production. A $300 device not designed for what you want to do is a perfect set up for frustration and failure because your expectations of the equipment are invalid.

What flash based camcroder should I pick up?
Q. I'm heading to D.C. next month and I wanted a camcorder to record the whole trip. It will also be used to capture a podcast, that to this point has been audio only. My requirements:

Linux Compatible
HD (1080p)
Under 200$ more towards 100$
(optional) LANC jack, so I can plug in an external microphone

A couple of years ago this would have been impossible, now I think it might be do-able. Thanks for the answers!

A. LANC is not a mic input. LANC is a wired remote control for zoom, focus, photo and power.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/LANC

The least expensive camcorder with a LANC port is the Sony HDR-HC9. It also has a 1/8" (3.5mm) stereo mic jack and manual audio control. It is a miniDV tape based camcorder that does 1080i HDV format high definition digital video capture.

1080p camcorder's in your price range are typically "pocket camcorders" with small lenses and small single imaging chip. The resulting low-light behavior is typically not very good. Generally speaking, they record to either AVI or MOV highly compressed h.264 formats. Whether this is "Linux compatible" is sort of important - but what matters more is if the video editor you are using can deal with the video format. I am not aware of any camcorder in the "pocket cam" range with a mic jack (and most certainly none have a LANC port) - but you can check the Sanyo Xacti lineup or the Kodak Zi8. Even if they have a 1/8" mic jack, they do not have manual audio gain control so loud audio will likely cause a very muddy audio (and static - "peaking") to be recorded because of the dependency on the auto-mic gain circuit.

what is the best mic to record loud music?

Q. hello friends; i have a sony hdr-sr11 i am thinking in buying external mic to record loud live music but i am not sure what mic to buy i have been looking for RODE VideoMic DVC; SONY ECM-MSD1; SONY ECM-HST1; which would you recommend? thanks for your answers.

A. Any of the mics will work OK for normal audio levels. I am not familiar with that camera enough to know if you can adjust audio input levels (probably not). If so, you are all set. If not, you will be disappointed because the camera will try to adjust levels automatically and it is NOT designed for loud music. You will get badly distorted sound.

Video pros always have a way to adjust the audio levels - pro cameras have that feature built in. Consumer cameras do not.

It will be a bit of a pain, but the best way to do this is to connect the microphone to a camcorder "XLR audio interface". This device allows you to adjust the mic level down so that it does not distort the camera input. You will need to buy a mic that has an XLR output. The mics you are looking at I think connect directly to the camera - you don't want that. Here is one reasonably priced audio interface that is designed for what you want to do:

http://www.markertek.com/SearchProduct.asp?item=DXA%2D6A&off=2&sort=prod&skuonly=0&search=DXA%2D6&pagesize=20

You can then connect any good pro XLR microphone to you camera.

What kinda of video camera should I buy?
Q. I am somewhat on a budget, but I will pay for quality. I am mainly wanting it to record live music in bars, so I want something that can handle that much noise clearly.

This part is not necessary but I'm going on a canoe trip soon, so if there is one I can take down the river too, that would be awesome. But I don't want to sacrifice video/sound quality just for that.

A. Live music = loud = camera or camcorder needs some sort of audio gain control. I would also expect that these would be night scenes - or poor indoor lighting. Hopefully, there is stage lighting for the performers.

Canoe trip = waterproof. Generally, there are housings available for waterproofing, so I think the long-pole is the audio control.

Step 1: Set a budget.

At the low end, there's the GoPro Hero or something from the Canon HF R line. With the GoPro's using an external digital audio recorder like a Zoom H1 and synching audio when editing the video. With the proper camcorder like the Canon HF R series, then use the "attenuator" mic setting for loud audio and a waterproof "bag". The camera is not expected to deep in the water, so an expensive deep-water housing is not needed. I think the Ewa Marine VLA would fit most of the Canon HF series camcorders. Sony has its line of underwater housings for Sony camcorders so any of the HDR-series cams can work for both your needs... Another angle is the Zoom Q3HD and not use it while canoeing (but after landing).

What camcorder should I get for movies and commercials?

Q. Im looking for a camcorder that is professional, HD, SD card, and something that has longevity. I dont want to make an investment and something better comes out. Ive heard of the RED cameras but I cant afford that. Ive looked at some DSLR's. What do you recommend for movies and commercials?

A. Take a look at the Canon XF100. As far as I have seen, it is the only Pro-camcorder at it's price to get a 50 mbps data rate. Everything else under about $5000 is getting half of that, making them little better than a good consumer twinkie-cam.

At $3300, the XF is not much more expensive than a 5DM2 with a good lens.

What is possibly the best and highest quality way to capture video from a professional camcorder to a computer?
Q. I own an HDR-HD1000U and I currently use a firewire cable to capture video from my camcorder to my computer. I am wondering if there is a better and higher quality way of capturing video. I would appreciate a helpful response!
I use Adobe Premiere to capture and edit my videos with.

A. The firewire is the best without considerable additional investment.

In theory, you could run the HDMI output to a high end recorder and capture uncompressed video. A suitable recorder is in the neighborhood of $1000-5000.

Can someone help me find a camcorder that allows for good sound quality?

Q. Hi!

I'm looking for a camcorder cheaper than £350 that has good sound quality, as I want to record live classical music. I know this means I need an external mic, so if someone knows of a camcorder which is good and allows for external mic, plus a mic worth spending money on, please let me know :)

thanks!

A. What is needed is manual audio gain control and good location of the mic(s).

It also depends on what sort of classical music. Solo, duet, trio, quartet, chamber music, etc. will have requirements different than a full orchestra.

There are a few entry level Canon camcorders (FS series, maybe one in the MV series) that have a 1/8" (3.5mm) stereo mic jack. But they do not have manual audio gain control.

The reason you need manual audio gain control is that even acoustic - classical - music can get loud enough to overdrive the automatic audio gain circuit - the result will be muddy audio and "static" (audio peaking at the loud passages).

Just because a camcorder has a mic jack, that does not mean it also has manual audio control.

It is possible to use the camcorder's internal built-in mics successfully - but the location of the camcorder (hence the location of the mics) is important because of the stereo separation and balance. With external mics, they can be located away from the camcorder... But even built-in mics need manual audio control. I guess the point I am trying to make is external mics are not a "hard and fast rule".

There are some Sony camcorders in your budget range that have a very rudimentary "MicRefLevel" menu toggle for "Normal" or "Low" gain. I am not aware of any SOny camcorders in your budget range that have an audio-in jack. There are some Canon camcorders in your price range that have a similar "Mic Attenuation" toggle.

The least expensive camcorder - of which I am am aware - with a mic jack and more granular manual audio control is the Canon HV40.

Another option is to use whatever camcorder you want - but record the audio with an external audio "field recorder" like those from Zoom, Edirol, Tascam, M-Audio and many others. These generally have built-in mics - and can connect external mics if required. All have manual audio control. When you import the video for editing, import the audio from the field recorder, sync the audio, then mute the audio that came in with the video...

What is the best hd camcorder to record live music in a club setting?

Where can I buy a camera that can take HD videos and pictures?

Q. It doesn't matter what camera. It could be a camcorder, digital, etc. My budget is $150 and down. I really want a camera that can take HD pictures mainly or any high quality pictures. It would be nice if it could also take HD videos too, but pictures are the main thing. I need an HD camera for my blog. Thank you. If you have any suggestions thank you so much for taking your time to answer.!

A. Budgeting $150 for such a camera tells us you have not done much research.

Cameras like that will cost you around $700.

Look here for cameras that might fit your criteria.

How are people allowed to bring cameras on Kingda Ka to film the ride?
Q. On Youtube I see POV videos of people riding Kingda Ka with cameras (whether it be a cell phone, camcorder, digital camera or Nikon, I don't know)! But they're very strict with what you bring on there (unless you hide it). So do people hide cameras? Or wear "GoPros"?

Thanks!

A. Well you have to get permission first.
Last year someone was caught on Ka with a camera. He was then escorted out of the park by security. When you get caught it's one year suspension(If your a season ticket holder it gets pulled no refund) from
any Six Flags Parks! But this idiot when back on his bus and changed a shirt/pants thinking he could fool the guards. He got as far as the ticket booth and was busted again.Well now he was charged with "Defiant Trespass" which means he was told not be in the grounds. He was arrested on the spot by Jackson's Police Dept.Take down to the station house and booked. That can carry a fine of up to $1000 plus court costs.
Oh yeah Mr.Smart Azz now is baned for life from any Six Flags!
The guards love to toss stupid people for sneaking cameras.*They take your picture when they toss you*
It happens about 5x a month at peak.
Some are stupid and try to get back in.They love that.So does Jackson(I live in town) they make money. That happens at least 1x a month.

What is the best Hard Drive camcorder on the market?

Q. I was planning on buying Sony SR47 (60 GB) hard drive camcorder, but I did not read too many good reviews on it.
($399.99)
Any suggestions??

A. Just to be clear - the Sony DCR-SR47 is an entry level, consumer grade, internal hard drive based camcorder. It is nowhere near "best".

Personally, I do not recommend internal hard drive based camcorders because of their known problems with vibration, loud audio, and high altitude... they can stop recording under these conditions. Flash memory and miniDV tape do not sffer from these problems. As well, HDD camcorders can be VERY challenging when the camcorder breaks and the video has not already been transferred to a computer. The removable media used by miniDV tape and flash memory can be used by other camcorders so access to the video is easier after camcorder failure.

The video file formats are the same when comparing HDD and flash memory - assuming the lenses and imaging chips are the same, the video quality from these camcorders is the same. The only difference is the storage media. Standard definition DV (used by miniDV tape based camcorders) is much less compressed and results in better video quality - again, assuming the lenses and imaging chips are the same size as the "equivalent" HDD and flash memory camcorders... MiniDV tape based camcorders require your computer to have a firewire port. HDD and flash memory camcorders use USB to copy the files - but many times those files need to be converted using a utility like MPEG StreamClip before a video editor can deal with it.

I strongly suggest you stay with miniDV tape (Sony DCR-HC62, Panasonic PV-GS320, Canon ZR960) or flash memory (Canon FS100) and skip hard disc drive camcorders. The ZR960 and FS100 have a mic jack (but no manual audio control) that other camcorders in this class do not have.

What happens when you fill up the hard drive of a camcorder?
Q. I want to get a camcorder and think a hard drive one is best, but I was wondering - when it says, for example, it will record 20 hours, does that mean once you've recorded 20 hours that's it till you transfer it to your computer? Or is there a way to replace the drive with a blank one to record more, like you can with memory cards in digital stills cameras?

A. you need to assume you will need to transfer to computer , but 20 hours is quite a bit of leway dont you think.

it is possible i guess that some now or in the future will have the facility to change the harddrive.

what camcorder should i get for 250 dollars?

Q. I have 250 dollars what camcorder should i get... and please don't say i should save up for a more expensive one.

A. I like the Canon ZR950. You can find them priced from $230 - $275 depending upon where you shop on the web. A word about that, be very careful about buying on the web, especially camcorders/cameras. There are many slick web sites with great camcorder prices, but you will get ripped off. I would stick to Circuit City, Buydig, Newegg, or B&H photo (B & H photo is the best). I still prefer mini dv tapes over newer hard drive or DVD camcorders. I find less problems when it comes to editing, function and overall performance when working with tapes - it's a personal thing. Even with more inexpensive camcorders it comes down to you controlling the camcorder, and not letting the camcorder control you. That is, even on less expensive camcorders you can control focus and exposure (not all but many of them). Granted, this doesn't have a focus ring, like more expensive camcorders, but it does have a menu where you can control focus and aperature/exposure settings. Yes, many of these camcorders do a fine job when set to automatic - and do well with automatic focus and automatic exposure control. I still think it's improtant to take the time to learn what the camcorder can really do. Many of these less expensive cameras look fine in outdoor lighting but stuggle a bit with low indoor lighting (if the lighting is dark), but that can be easily fixed indoors by simply turning on more lights/light or adding a table lamp or floor lamp. It's not necessary for most people to go out an buy "movie" lights. it's just a matter of being aware of your surroundings when shooting. Many people complain that their camcorder footage looks "grainy" or "dark" inside, but in some cases you need to add some light in the room. The camcorder industry advertises LOW lux or low light ratings, or that the camcorder will perform miracles inside in low lighting, but every manufacturer is different in their ratings and how they view their specific camcorder.

But, with that said, I like the Canon ZR950 for the price, and it's a good value. If you have any money left over, buy yourself a tripod.

How much can I claim for a stolen camcorder tape?
Q. On my return from a working holiday, one of my bags was searched by a company working at the airport. When I unpacked it at home, I discovered that some things were missing, notably my camcorder. I had specifically taken this to video my presentation whilst away... I'm in the process of filing a claim with the company that searched my bag & would like advice on how much to claim for the tape in the camcorder, as this is something that can't be replaced.
Any ideas?

A. Unless you had seperate insurance for the contents of the tape you are not going to get any money for that, as it has no commercial value, so you may get the value of the tape (blank). I learnt this and it was a costly mistake, now I never leave my camera or tapes (more important) they are always with me as a camera can be replaced but 6 weeks of underwater filming cannot.

Sorry

Whats the best super slow-mo camcorder out there for under $2000?

Q. Whats the best super slow-mo camcorder out there for under $2000?

I don't just want a regular slow-mo but super slow-mo like they use in sports and etc.

I needs to be one that is hand-held and not a huge thing to lug around, and it also needs to be able to record at normal speed with zooming and all that good stuff.

Thanks! : )
could i get a specific model?

A. Any camcorder capable of recording at 60p is good for sports and fast action recording. The Slow motion effect is done during editing by holding the "CTRL" key while dragging the end of the clip to the left. Almost all mayor manufacturers have several models. Check out Sony, Canon, JVC, etc.

Which Prosumer Camcorder to get?
Q. I'm saving up money for a decent prosumer/professional camcorder. I understand that the great quality ones are all well over $5,000.

But I've been looking at the Canon GL2 Mini DV and the Panasonic AG-DVC20 and want to know which ones better. I'm planning on making Indie Films and submitting them into Film Festivals.

Any other camcorder under $2000 that you recommend would be great too!
thanks in advance!

A. For under 2k you have plenty of other options that are much better than the two you mentioned.

For your price range, I would seriously look into buying a Panasonic DVX100 or Canon XL2. These are two of the best DV cameras out there. While some sites will make it seem like these cameras are out of your price range, there are plenty of legitimate places to find them used, in great condition with low usage. You can probably even find a new DVX for your price. I think even if you buy one used, you will be much happier with it than, say, a GL2. Those cameras have been on the market for ages and are no longer worth the retail price they're sold for.

If you need help finding the right deal, you can email me at SK3055@yahoo.com. And don't forget about leaving money in your equipment budget for sound!

What are some really cheap HD cameras under 200$?

Q.

A. The best camera under $200 is currently the Nikon P310.

Well, maybe under $200. Nikon had a $100 instant rebate that expired on Mar 30, 2013. Check back periodically to see if that rebate is extended or not. Otherwise, you may be spending about $50 more, which is still a good deal.

http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/842326-REG/Nikon_P310B_Coolpix_P300_Digital_Camera.html

This camera normally sells for $300+, but it has just been discontinued for it's replacement, the P330. Since this is an annual (or semi-annual) event with most camera manufacturers (of compact cameras), you can often pick up an outstanding camera at a low price when they first become discontinued.

However, when this happens you have to act farily quickly as the stock is limited to what is on the dealer's shelves.

Why do I like the P310?

First, it has manual exposure controls (prorgam, shutter/aperture priority, manual), This gives you maximum flexibility in composing your photos.

Second, it has a fast f/1.8 lens, which rivals even the better grade DSLR lenses. What does this mean? Superior low-light performance, as the camera will gather 2 to 4 times more light than the typical compact camera.

It also does up to 1920x1080p @ 30fps "full" HD with stereo audio. But I am not much into video so that is not something I often use. If I want to do video, I have a camcorder for that.

And I own this camera, so it is not something I would recommend without having some experience with it. While the zoom range of this camera is less than those ridiculously high-powered zooms on bridge cameras, the lens on the P310 is vastly superior to those cameras. So while you won't be able to take a photo of a bird from a mile away, you will be able to take better photos within the range of the P310's zoom.

Best all around camcorder?

Q. I need an hd camcorder that has a pretty large zoom and 300 dollars or less (ish). I will be using it for makeup tutorials and shooting fast motion horse riding clips. I need an all around good camcorder 2013. Thanks

A. You should go with Sony HDR-CX220/B since your budget is $300.

http://www.amazon.com/Sony-HDR-CX220-Definition-Handycam-Camcorder/dp/B00AR95H0W/ref=as_li_tf_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=9325&tag=informazcom-20

It has good quality. Nice zoom. Supports full 1080p in 60 fps. Go read some reviews.

help to buy entry level DSLR?
Q. Hi Folks,

I am much interested in photography since my childhood. But till I was using Canon A3100 Point and Shoot camera.

I am willing to buy an entry level DSLR as I am an amateur. I googled much but arrived in a confusion. I have shortlisted 2 models. Please suggest the best one.

1) Canon 600 D - heard many positive reviews, but lens cost is more and there is no auto focus in video mode.

2) Sony SLT A58 - heard that lens costs cheaper. But is it rare in market ? I think auto focus in video mode is available.

A. Actually Canon has some great value priced lenses. Sony has limited line up of lenses and they are normally expensive.
Here is an article that should help you with your first DSLR purchase:
http://photography-with-any-camera.blogspot.com/2013/05/best-digital-slr-for-beginners.html

Also, don't buy a camcorder for video as one answerer suggested unless you don't care much about quality. With a right lens, an SLR will take much better video than any consumer grade camcorder. With SLR you can do selective focusing but a camcorder will give you flat videos- everything always in focus. Here is another read for you:

What is the perfect Camcorder for makeup guru videos on Youtube?

Q. ***I would also like the camcorder to be a camera also. Take still pictures. Is that possible?
**Price range- Under $1,000

A. Any camcorder can capture good video - if there is enough light. ADD LIGHT.

And learn to use the white balance control. Read the manual.

Since we don't know what you plan to edit with, making a recommendation on the camcorder is silly. If it was me, I'd be looking at a Canon HV40 or Sony HDR-HC9 and stage lights from Guitar Center. Learn about "3-point lighting".

What are some video cameras that would be great for YouTube? More details in info?
Q. My specifications being this:
Must have a display screen that can be flipped forward so you can see yourself while shooting.
Must hold hours of video.
Must have hours of battery life.
Must be under $1,000.
Must have phenomenal quality videos.
Must not be too heavy.
Wonderful zoom.

I am looking for a camcorder, but I would consider an SLR camera if it fills all of the requirements. I adore Nikon, but it does not necessarily have to be Nikon.

Thank you for any suggestions!

What should i get a camera or a camcorder?

Q. i dont know what to get a camera or a camcorder my budget is 300-600.

A. Put it this way

camera for still pictures

camcorder for moving pictures

It does not matter how you look at it neither can do the other ones job very well. so it depends if you want to mainly take stills or movies.

even a cheap stills camera will take good pictures hy not get a cheap stills and a reasonable camcorder, or the other way round.

Good luck

What Type Of Camcorder Should I Get?
Q. I want a CAMCORDER for Music Video, and Sketch comedy purposes!
I want an HD camcorder
i need help because i don't want to screw up like last year i bought a crappy camcorder
My budget is $0-$150

A. To be honest, I spent 1000$ for mine, and I am still not happy with it. You need to save a bit more money, and then get a DSLR for Music Video. Normal camcorder won't do the job. Unless you are really good at postproduction, then you might get away with a HD flipcam.

Sony HDR S11 vs Pentax X5 for Video?

Q. Hi guys,

I'm looking to buy a camera primarily for video making. I can buy either a Sony HDR S11 ($100) or a Pentax X5 ($85). The Sony is older (2008) but is more video focused and has a much higher retail price ($1,100) while the Pentax is newer (2012?) but has a much lower retail price ($200). Which would be a better buy? I'll provide more reading material on both.

Sony: http://reviews.cnet.com/digital-camcorders/sony-handycam-hdr-sr11/4505-6500_7-32775808.html

Pentax: http://reviews.cnet.co.uk/compact-digital-cameras/pentax-x-5-review-50009964/

Thanks!

A. if you can get the Sony for that price, it is a real steal. check to make sure the camera is not damaged and is complete. i use a JVC HDD of about the same vintage and find it quite satisfactory.

stay clear of the Pentax, it records movies in the Motion-JPEG format, a really poor codec. Having used Ricoh SLR, i know their products are well designed for photography. But the company has no experience in video and is way out of their league.

Can you help me find the best camcorder for my specifications?
Q. I want it to be under $400.
I need to be able to connect it to my computer so that I can edit the content.
I also want my final product to be stored on a dvd.

Things like good picture quality and user friendly controls would be great.

Please give recommendations for the right camcorder for me.

Thank you.

A. Look at Sanyo Xacti camcorders. The model of 2006 Xacti HD1 record HD Mpeg-4 movies at 1280 x 720 pixels and 30 fps working in the powerful 16:9 widescreen format. HD1 has effective sensor resolution in 5,100,000 pixels. It is based on a small body with dimensions: 80x119x36mm, weighs 210g and costs abt. $400. Q. Can someone help me with information on prosumer camcorders?

What is a good cheap hd camcorder?
Q. Hey guys, i like to make youtube videos, but i only have a webcam D: And i dont have much money, and i realy need a hd/ high quality camcorder. Please help! Also, if you know any good cheap video editors that have some good effects/work well with chroma key? I use Videopad and have recently started using AVS, but im not very good with it. Thanks!

A. If you want a good HD camera within a decent price range. Check on the Kodak Zi8. I have that one and it does beautifully. You can change between 1080p, 720p 60FPS, 720p 30FPS, and SD videos. It even has 5.1MP stills, but I don't use that. The best thing about it is the external mic jack, which allows you to use a better microphone, which Flip cameras do not have. As well as an SD card slot, which allows countless hours of recording.

How come the more a child grows the less we remember them as a baby?

Q. I want to remember my son as a baby in my arms and it just seems to get harder and harder as he grows older. Lots of other parents I know experience this too. I know it's easy to look at pictures but why can't I remember a lot about it? Maybe that's why so many parents have more children to bring back that feeling.

A. I too have asked this question many times.
My advice to you is to purchase a camcorder.
When I get in the mood to remember my daughter as a baby, or how she was at different ages of her life, I watch my home movies. I always end up crying my eyes out b/c I miss it so much. Hearing her first learn to talk, and watching her play, or even as a newborn just laying there and sleeping, brings back so many memories that I thought I forgot. You do not forget, I remember each and every minute that I recorded of her, but just need to be reminded of it sometimes....

What would you recommend for filming a babys birth? My husband is deployed and will miss it. ?
Q. Should I get a digital camera with video or a camcorder? What would be the easiest way to send the videos to him? Camcorder that films on DVD type format or a digital camera? Im so confused as to what is the best.

A. for this very important event. try and coordinate with someone who already has a camera they know how to use. I often sit standby for births but then I shoot video for a living.

It is an important event, you might want to get someone who knows what they are doing and is not squeamish!! but if you have to get a camera, keep this in mind...
with MiniDV you can shoot up to an hour on one tape but then you have to capture the video then edit and compress to author to DVD. if you get one that shoots to memory stick, it is already compressed but your video time is limited, and you can almost instantly upload to a web page.
another alternative, if you have time to plan and the timing is right. get a laptop and a cam, download Skype, and film it live to him.

God luck :-)

should i buy a DSLR camers and a camcorder in india or thailand or malyasia or singapore?

Q. I am for a vacation to thailand, malaysia and singapore. I want to buy a a DSLR camers and a camcorder. I need advice that should i buy them in india or from the above mentioned countries. International warranty must be there.
thanks
vip
Pls specify the possible price differnce in the items and the cons of buying from there

A. I do not know about shopping in Thailand but comparing Singapore and Malaysia, the prices will be lower in Malaysia. This is because Singapore charges a 7% GST on all items. Of course, as a tourist, you can get refund when you exit. If you do not mind filling up the forms for the GST refunds, then Singapore and Malaysia's prices will be comparable.

Having said that, you have to do your homework on what the price of the camera is.Buy only from reputable stores. You may not get the best price but it will save you from been taken for a ride. As international warranty is important to you, state this upfront.

Are digital cameras in Chennai expensive? Do they sell them duty free at the airport?
Q. They're expensive in Sri Lanka. I can buy one for more than double the price in Colombo or I can wait until I arrive at Chennai airport and buy one there.

Also, does Chennai have cheap Lonely Planet travel guides? In Vietnam you could buy one for a couple of bucks on the street.

What determines how clear a camcorder is?
Q. I already own a camcorder and i want a better one with higher quality video. So i just wanted to know what makes a camcorder have sharper/clearer video.

A. Generally, the higher the numbers of the resolution makes a higher quality image (so, for example while shooting in HD 1920x1080 is better than 1440x1080)

Also, the more frames per second, the better looking the end result is going to be (so 60fps is better than 30fps)

What is the best camcorder in the $500 price range?

Q. I just bought a Panasonic SDR-H60 camcorder and the image is really bad. It's pixelated and soft when I play it on my widescreen tv. In fact it's worse than the VHS camcorders which offer a wet/crisp looking image.

Is there a camcorder in the $500 price range that looks clean and crisp on a flat screen and isn't all soft and pixelated?

A. I suggest Canon VIXIA HF100 Flash Memory High Definition Camcorder. It captures videos at 1920x1080 for true 1080i display.

what kind of affordable camcorder should i use to create a documentary that i can edit on my computer?
Q. i am looking to create a documentary about the metal music scene in illinois and i need to know what kind of camcorder under 500 dollars i should use. what ever kind it is i need to be able to edit the footage on my computer. i would also be willing to rent a much more pro camera but i cant find prices anywhere.

A. First of all, you don't have to use the video card to input the video from your camcorder to your PC. Use a firewire or USB 2.0

As for renting, may or may not work for you. I can't imagine shooting a documentary like this in three days. If those prices IMO, it would be cheaper for you to buy a 3CCD camcorder, it would save you money in the long run and you can get a decent one in the $500 price range.

I might reccomend the Panasonic PVGS300 or PVGS250. The current model, (PVGS300), you might be able to find for under $500 bucks. In what I've read, the 300 does not have a mic input which may be a deterent for you. Also, check and see how it does in low light, if you're going to be filiming concert footage, this may be a concern as well.

Anyway, here's a review of the 300:

What HD camcorder would be the best?
Q. I'm looking for something with a little better quality than I have. I have just a normal camera, but I want to try an HD.
I want something under $75, so I'm looking on Amazon.
Any good ones that you can think of?

A. HD simply means it has a frame size of 1080x1920 pixels, it says nothing about quality. a $75 HD camera will really suck. save up your money to get an entry level camcorder, like a Kodak Z or a Flip.

What digital camcorder comes with a USB cable and has a tripod connection?

Q. I have a Mac so I am looking for a digital camcorder with a usb cable and is mac compatible.

A. Hard drive and flash drive camcorders use a USB cable, every camera and camcorder I have can be put on a tripod, I don't think that will be a problem.

Minidv requires a firewire connection.

How can I import my videos from an HDD camcorder to my Mac?
Q. I have an Hitachi HDD camcorder, and cannot import the video from it into iMovie. According to the manual, it is Mac compatible, and I can import photos from it without problem.

When I hook the camcorder up to my computer, iMovie doesn't recognize it as a camera, and I don't know what to do about it.

I am willing to download a program, should it be free...

Does anyone know what I can do to remedy this problem?
I have iMovie '08, and my camcorder connects via USB cord. I am not looking to get a different version of iMovie.

Choosing the best footage quality sony handycam/camcorder?

Q. I want to spend around 500-600 dollars on a sony handycam/camcorder. But do not know which one to choose. I love those hard drive ones but have heard the quality of footage would be lower as it should compress the movie. So I think a better choice is DVD or mini DV ones. But which model? Can you help?

A. Personally I prefer recording on mini DV rather than DVDcam because the easy of transferring video into computer and vice versa. DVDcam has no firewire port at this moment. Any brand will do. Output quality totally depends on you as a cameraman. A good output picture comes from a good picture source.

I would like to make an infrared flashlight for sony camcorder night shot?

Q. Would it be as easy as getting an infrared filter and placing it on a flashlight? Do I need a specific type of light bulb? How can this be done?Would like to use it for improving the night shot on my Sony HDR-SR11 camcorder. Thanks for any info.I am thinking of using a flashlight with 830nm.Is this ideal? Thanks for any info.

A. You can get specialist IR lights for recording bats - these have a peak output of 810nm, so 830nm should be OK. I don't know that it's "ideal" though - the "bat lights" are a compromise so as not to disturb the bats, and the cut-off for the IR detector is around 1000nm. I don't know where the peak sensitivity is, though.

I'd have thought that IR emitting LEDs would be a better option than using a filter.

Best camcorder with night shot or equivalent?
Q. I want to buy a new camcorder but one of my big requirements is for to be able to shoot at night (see in the dark) so like Sony's night shot or an equivalent. I would prefer flash but would by tape too. Also if we could keep it under $1000. The night vision is important because I am going on a wildlife camping trip.

A. I would go the sony handycam for it's nightshot , it is the only one with your budget in mind that has the things you are looking for , or get a cheap t-500 , convert the three light led's with green and blue nail polish (as seen on youtube) and get the same effect for 150US with a high definition camera

Questions about plugging my Camcorder into my Computer?

Q. For quite some time now I've been wondering if and how I can plug my camcorder into my computer. My camcorder is a JVC model GR- 250us and I have a normal Dell computer. And I don't know much about computers or camcorders. So can somebody please tell me if I can plug my camcorder into my computer, and with what type of cable? Thanks in advance!

A. The JVC GR-D250US

Download the camcorder manual here:
http://books.jvcservice.com/booklist.asp?Model=GR-D250US

ALL miniDV camcorders (from JVC, Sony, Panasonic, Canon, Samsung and others) use their DV port and a Firewire cable to connect to the firewire400 port of your computer. If your computer does not have a firewire port, adding one is easy if you have expansion ports on your computer.

Refer to page 37 in the manual. Firewire, IEEE1394a, DV and i.LINK are all the same thing. You do not need to use a cable from JVC. I use one from Belkin and one from Monster.

How can i get my samsung camcorder to work on my mac book?
Q. I bought a samsung camcorder and a mac book to star making a editing home vidios. when trying to connect them using a firewire cable to star editing i found out that SAMSUNG camcorders are not compatable with mac books (imovies)
Is their any way i can make them compatable???

A. It's true that Apple doesn't list any Samsung camcorders as compatible with iMovie. Befrore you consider tossing your Samsung and buying another brand, let's consider what iMovie needs. The only way to import data from a camcorder to iMovie is by Firewire (IEEE 1394) connection. Does your Samsung have Firewire connector? If not, you can copy the movie data to your MacBook hard drive and then open the movie file in iMovie. Here is what Apple says about that:

"To use your video camera to import directly into an iMovie HD project, you must connect it using the FireWire ports on your video camera and your computer. Some cameras label the FireWire port "iLink" and some hide the port under a cover or door. Some cameras have both FireWire ports and USB ports (for downloading still images to iPhoto, for example).
Plug the 4-pin connector into your video camera and the 6-pin connector into your computer. If you're still not sure if your video camera has a FireWire port, check its manual.

Keep in mind that you need to switch your video camera to VCR, VTR, or camera mode and turn the power on when you import to iMovie HD. It's a good idea to plug in your camera's AC adapter to prevent the battery from running down while you're importing.

If you camera uses an MPEG-4 solid-state card or has a USB port and not a FireWire Port, you can transfer your video files to your computer via the USB port. When you connect your MPEG-4 device to your computer using a USB cable, your camera or device appears as a hard disk on your desktop. You can then open the device's icon and drag the MPEG-4 files into your iMovie HD projects."

How to make a live video feed with an HDMI Camcorder?

Q. How can you make a live video feed on an HDMI camcorder? People come with solutions, but they don't describe how they work or how to use it. I want to make animations, but with a poor quality video capture USB, the quality and video resolution is crap. I have a SONY HDR-CX190. If you do come up with a solution, please tell me how to use it.

A. Live feed to what? From the camcorder to a locally-connect (with a cable) computer?

Blackmagic Design has a couple of video converter boxes. Connect the camcorder's AV-out to the video converter box; the converter box connects to the computer.

The preferred method is to use a firewire connection because firewire is designed for streaming - USB is not (it is a bursty protocol). But your CX190 has no firewire connection - for consumer grade camcorders, this is normally the domain of miniDV tape based systems.

If you choose to do a high definition stream and want to send that out to the internet somewhere, we'd need to know a lot more about your computer, the local network connection (wired ethernet - 100baseT or gig bit ethernet) will be needed) and the internet service provider needs to be very robust. Video like this uses a TON of bandwidth and can easily bring a poorly designed (or congested) wifi network down.

Back to the camcorder to computer connection... Most low-end video editors cannot deal well with USB-based streaming (in high quality video - in this case, high definition video) becasue USB is not designed to carry this sort of high-bandwidth video. Most of the time, the camcorder's analog AV-out is used, then the analog video get digitized and shoved over USB. You have already discovered this. If we can't replace the camcorder then something else needs to happen. But you told us nothing about the computer.

Looking through the Blackmagic Design product list, you'll see cards with HDMI inputs that use an expansion slot inside the computer. These are not inexpensive... and the files will be huge - but the video quality will be there. There are other video converter products available from other manufacturers - but without knowing your budget, computer and operating system, it is impossible to make any specific recommendations - only general ones...

How can I get the slow motion effect from MXF 60p recorded by P2 HD Camcorder?
Q. I have some MXF video files shot with my P2 HD Camcorder. I am shooting at 60P, but I want to slow the footage 50 percent for editing. I assumed that if I selected the 30P setting that the footage would be slowed, but the converted shot is the same length as the original footage that was shot at 60P. How can I get the slow motion effect?

A. You did not tell us what you are editing with or where you "selected the 30P setting" to slow the video playback speed.

Don't convert anything until the video editor can deal with the video. Then use the video editor's controls to do what is needed.

+++++

I just answered your FCP question.

Once the video is in FCP, place the clip you want to slow into the timeline. Click once to select it. On the command line, under "Modify" select "Speed". Adjust as needed.
