lightweight, portable, budget camcorder?

Q. Hi,
I'm doing a bit of off road travel and need a camcorder that will charge from my solar panel, so it will need to charge from a USB port. Also, i'm looking for some thing that will work off SD cards, these products seem to be cheaper than the HDD camcorders.
Any help or advice appreciated.
Luke

A. Never buy a HDD camcorder, as camcorders move around a lot it is much easier to damage the HDD from a fall or drop where as memory ones are almost indestructible(depending on the model) I would recommend one of the flip camcorders. Personally the flip mino HD is the best in my opinion, the only problem is that it only has a 1 hour record time and you can't upgrade the memory. If you want more record time you could look at the Kodak zi6 HD camcorder. It uses SD cards (up to 32GB) and standard AA batteries. My problem is that although with a 8GB memory card its around $30 cheaper, is that the colors are over saturated and the camera is much larger than the flip. Also I don't believe it does USB charging but than its not like AA batteries are hard to come by. Either way the quality on both camera is great for the price. Only problem with most SD budget cams is that its digital zoom only (reduces image quality) and they tend to be a little more shaky, however for $200 or less for HD its also a lot less of a deal if they get damaged. I have the Mino HD and love it for on the go recordings, and the battery on it last a lot longer than the 1 hour of storage does. Basiclly Mino- Smaller, better footage Kodak-Expandable Memory/Batteries. Hope this helps

Oh PS- Both cameras save their video in an easy to use format Mino HD-MP4 H.264 Kodak- .Mov

Looking for a decent Budget camcorder.?
Q. i make youtube videos. about working on cars. and fixing computers. so i need a dedicated camcorder. something low cost that i wont care if it gets banged up. the one i use now kind of sucks. its a gigaware flip cam i got at radio shack. it sucks in low light. has a terrible mic. it's just junk. i want something better. but i am on a tight budget. i don't need anything spectacular. its for youtube. i'm not trying to make a professional grade movie or anything. just vlogging and stuff like that. here's what i am looking for. i want a good Microphone. decent in low light conditions. no less then 720P. and i want it to record in MP4 format. MP4 just works the best with the software i use. currently my flip cam records in AVI and i have to convert it before i can edit. that's annoying. and it hurts quality. and also Windows 8 has issues with some AVI formats as well. so MP4 format is absolutely preferred. and i want all that for 200 bucks or less. i found one from Samsung on Amazon that fit the bill but whats on paper and how it actually functions in the real world are two different things. that's why i am asking for recommendations. do you know of any budget cameras that fit my requirements that don't suck?

A. Issue 1:
Camcorders in your budget range have small lenses and small imaging chip. The will not do well under low light or poor lighting conditions. As camcorders increase in price, their lenses and imaging chips get larger and their ability to behave better under poor lighting conditions increases. If you cannot increase your budget, then add light. More on this after the next paragraph.

Issue 2:
Camcorders in your budget range generally do not have a mic jack. As you have discovered, if the mic is in the right place to capture decent audio, then the camcorder frame is not right... or if the camcorder frame looks good, this is not usually the best place for the mic to be. If the camcorders you are looking at don't have a mic jack, then your other option is to use an external digital audio recorder. The audio you want to use is recorded separately, import it to the editor with the video, sync, then mute the audio captured by the camcorder... this is an extra step, but the alternative means paying for a more expensive camcorder with an external mic jack.

So... assuming you stay with the budget you have, a couple of worklights from the hardware store mounted on tripods will provide additional light. An external audio recorder (Sony and Olympus make good, affordable units), allows you to stay with the existing camcorder and process flow. If you are set on on replacing the camcorder, it may be best to alter your process flow, too - and look into something in the Canon HF R series or perhaps a Zoom Q3HD... And converting the video should not reduce video quality - assuming the transcoder is doing the conversion correctly.

Best budget camcorder for low-light situations?

Q. Hello! I am taking a trip to NY and DC in April and I want a good camera that can record in low light (the city at night mostly) To be honest I really dont want to spent more that $300. I have been looking at camcorders like the sony webbie Aipteks line etc.

Any ideas?

A. You are not going to find a camcorder that records well at night for under $300. Period. Aipteks are in particular pretty horrible in low-light. Here's a test... look at the size of the lens, the glass itself, not the plastic part surrounding it. The size of the lens indicates something very signficant about the camera's light-gathering capability. Most of the Aiptek-type cameras have a tiny lens area, and often much of that lens area is shell, not lens.

I'd bet the Sony Webbie outperforms any of the Aipteks, but it's not great compared to many "real" camcorders. See here:
http://www.camcorderinfo.com/content/Sony-MHS-PM1-Webbie-HD-First-Impressions-Camcorder-Review-36052.htm

You can find "real" camcorders in this range... something like the Canon FS-100. While this one is no great shakes at low-light, it's way beyond the range of these web-cam spinoffs like the Aipteks and the Webbie.. plus you get a real lens, large optical zoom, etc.

Even semi-pro camcorders are not all that great in the dark. Take my Sony... it's got a sensor about 15x larger than some of those webcam type camcorders, but it's still not ideal for low-light video... and it cost me $2600 some years back.

What camcorders do you recommend?
Q. I need a camcorder that has a shoe mount on top but also a mic-in jack. I want a smaller camera though (like a handycam). Not looking for anything too expensive though. I'm looking on ebay but I'm not sure what to look for. My budget is about 150 for a used item.

A. HD Camcorders and DSLR Cameras interpolate the video, which means of every 25 frames of video, 4 or 5 frames are taken by the lens assembly; the other frames in between these are filled in by the camcorder inner circuitry, thus giving you not true video. It looks like this -one frame from the lens assembly, 7or 8 from the electronic circuitry, one frame from the lens assembly, 7or 8 from the electronic circuitry, one frame from the lens assembly, 7or 8 from the electronic circuitry, one frame from the lens assembly, 7or 8 from the electronic circuitry, from front to back of the video. Near impossible to edit, even when you have the Multi port processor computer with the big 1GB Graphics card and a Sound card that is required to edit, view, watch and work with the files these camcorders produce.

DSLR Cameras, all Makes, all Models, all have the same problem when video taping some long videos, all overheat at the 13 to 18 minute mark, depending on the Make and Model. This is unavoidable, it all has to with the fact, video is an afterthought in DSLR camera production.

Consumer Level HD Camcorders and DSLR Cameras have 4 problems. 1) Blurry, fuzzy, out of focus areas closely around people in videos taken by consumer level HD camcorders. 2) Any movement, even a wave or lifting an arm, while in front of a recording Consumer Level HD Camcorder and DSLR Cameras, results in screen ghosts and artifacts being left on the video track, following the movement. Makes for bad video, sports videos are unwatchable. 3) These Consumer Level HD Camcorders and DSLR Cameras all have a habit of the transferred to computer files are something you need to convert, thus losing your HD quality, to work with your editing software. 4) Mandatory maximum record times - 1 hour, 30 minutes, 8 minutes, 3 minutes four different times advertised as maximum record time for some Consumer Level HD Camcorders and DSLR Cameras. No event I have ever been to is that short. Either take multiple camcorders and DSLR Cameras or pack up with out getting the end of the event on video.

MiniDV is currently the most popular format for consumer digital camcorders. MiniDV camcorders are typically more affordable than their HDD and DVD counterparts. Each MiniDV tape will typically hold an hour of footage at normal recording speed and quality. MiniDV tapes are available for purchase at not only electronic and camera stores, but also at drugs stores and grocery stores, making them easy to find while your on vacation. There are literally hundreds of MiniDV camcorders available; both in standard and high-definition. And add the fact that to get a HD camcorder that could produce better video quality footage, one would have to spend in excess of $3500 for that camcorder that could produce higher quality video

camcorders?

Q. ok whats the diff about these camcorders and which ones are the best my budget goes up to 500 nothing more help
dvd, mini dv, hi 8 mm, high def, tapeless, hard drive whats their difference help!

A. DO NOT GET A DVD based camcorder.
DO NOT GET A DVD based camcorder.

Did I mention... DO NOT GET A DVD based camcorder.

Get a hard drive based camcorder if you want. Some of the higher-end flash memory camcorders are good. Best quality video continues to come from miniDV tape based camcorder, so you can get one of those.

DO NOT GET A DVD based camcorder. Poor video quality, difficulties transferring to computer for editing, unstable optical discs... Do yourself and your husband a HUGE favor and please don't do it.

If you tell us your budgets, we can make actual recommendations. Canon, Sony and Panasonic are the usual manufacturer suspects.

Digital formats are best for editing: MiniDV tape, hard drive, flash memory (also known as "tapeless").

The analog formats are just going away slowly. This included Hi8, VHS-c.

My recommendation: Canon ZR800 or Sony DCR-HC28 (or HC96). You may need to add a firewire port to your computer. Easy to do if there is an available PCI slot inside - or PCMCIA slot if a laptop. Don't spend all your money on the camcorder - you will also want a tripod and an extra high capacity rechargeable battery... and a sturdy case.

Budget HD Camcorder, easy best answer?
Q. Basically I am looking for an HD camcorder that can deliver some clear and precise picture for youtube videos I will be making for work.

I recently picked up an Insignia HD camcorder which looks great on the camera, but when uploading to youtube looks anything but great. Here is the link to the camera for people who want to see what I have :
http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=8940015&type=product&id=1215217076309

Now the following link is the kind of quality on youtube that I am looking for or around it: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=68bJZu2AgNM&feature=fvw

go to around 30sec to 1 minute mark to see the quality I want. I just want clear, vibrant, andcolorful movies.

Now to get back to the actual question. What am I looking to pay to get quality of that quality at least. What is the minimum I am looking at nad does anyone have any sugestions on cameras they know are cheap and look like this.

Easy best answer for great responses.

A. Help me understand... You have a $128 pocket "toy" Insignia camcorder and you don't like the video quality.

You want the quality of a Sony HDR-XR500V, $1,000 camcorder but don't want to spend any money?

This is only on part of the puzzle.

We don't know what you edited your pocket cam video with and on. We don't know what you consider poor video. We don't know what the lighting conditions were that you captured with and we don't know what you did with the video (compression wise) before you uploaded...

Then, with the Sony, that AVCHD/MTS high definition camcorder has very specific requirements for a computer and editing applications to edit with and on.

Provide more definition on what you have and how you got it - video wise... or expect the response to be that you need to spend at least what that Sony costs to get that quality of video... and add in all the computer hardware and software upgrades you will need too.

As lenses and imaging chips increase in size, the cost goes up.

What should i get a camera or a camcorder?

Q. i dont know what to get a camera or a camcorder my budget is 300-600.

A. Put it this way

camera for still pictures

camcorder for moving pictures

It does not matter how you look at it neither can do the other ones job very well. so it depends if you want to mainly take stills or movies.

even a cheap stills camera will take good pictures hy not get a cheap stills and a reasonable camcorder, or the other way round.

Good luck

What Type Of Camcorder Should I Get?
Q. I want a CAMCORDER for Music Video, and Sketch comedy purposes!
I want an HD camcorder
i need help because i don't want to screw up like last year i bought a crappy camcorder
My budget is $0-$150

A. To be honest, I spent 1000$ for mine, and I am still not happy with it. You need to save a bit more money, and then get a DSLR for Music Video. Normal camcorder won't do the job. Unless you are really good at postproduction, then you might get away with a HD flipcam.

What's a good camcorder for an amateur filmmaker?

Q. Ok, so I'm almost a sophomore at a college prep school, and i'm looking for a low-medium quality camcorder. My budget is at most $1,500. Slightly over is fine, but that doesn't mean $1,750 is! For the camera i need the ability to:
- plug in an external mic
- shoot in HD
- mount onto a tripod
- shoot in a mac-friendly video format
Thanks for your help!

A. wow thts a lot of money i just use the iphone if you have one has really great video quality and u can put it on a tripod

What's the best camcorder for independent horror movie?
Q. I'm interested in film making, and I want to create a horror movie and send it out to film festivals. I already created a script and have the actors, however the camcorder I have isn't entry level. I'm only 16, so money is an issue. I have about $800 for a new camcorder that would be good in low light situations and film in HD. What would be a good camcorder for my budget?

A. Before you decide on which camcorder - or we make suggestions - we need to know if that $800 budget includes mics, lighting, cables, power, tripods or other steadying devices, computer upgrade for video editing, editing application and a few other things.

If the $800 is for the camcorder only because the other items are already budgeted elsewhere, then get the largest lens diameter and imaging chip you can afford. Most likely in the Canon HF M series.

If the $800 is for the camcorder plus everything else, then you really need to save more.

The *best* camcorders with good low light behavior are those with LARGE lens diameter (70mm or larger) PLUS large imaging chip (3CCD or 3CMOS). The closest I can get you is the Sony HDR-FX1000 which is about 3x more than your budget.

If you can't increase your camcorder budget, then learn to shoot "day for night".
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4MaC44MU4iw
This way you will not need a camcorder that has to be good in low light conditions... YOU control the lighting, don't let the camcorder control you.

Which camcorder is good for filming soccer games?

Q. I want to film my brothers soccer games and training so I wanted to buy a camcorder.
My budget is pretty low so nothing fancy.
My friend is selling Samsung HMX-F80BP, and I want to know can this one record soccer/football games. I would use tripod and just go left right left right with occasional zooming.

I also thought about Canon vixia m30 or r30 but those are a bit over budget so I probably will reconsider them in a few months.

What should I look for in a camcorder for filmmaking?
Q. I'm kinda knew to this, I'm a student filmmaker and am look to buy my first camcorder. My budget isn't too high, under 1,000. I can definately pay 500 but anything higher than 750 is probably pushing it. I just want to know what are somethings i should look for in buying a camcorder. Also, I will be editing these on a PC using Windows Movie Maker.

A. Mic jack. Manual audio control.

Canon HV40 (if your computer has a firewire port) or HF S100 (if your computer has no firewireport).

And get Sony Vegas. It can deal with either the HDV or MTS files from the above camcorders. MovieMaker cannot.

You will also want a tripod (don't go cheap - you never want to shoot handheld). The Sunpak 7500TM is an OK consumer-grade tripod.

Invest in an optional high capacity battery or two from the camcorder manufacturer. And a case (Pelican 1500) and maybe a video light (Dot Line DV-60) and camera bracket (Bescor VB-50) and a shotgun mic (NRG Research SA-568).

Does anybody know where i can get a camcorder?
Q. I'm looking for a camcorder that's new and factory sealed. I already tried looking on ebay but they only have refurbished cams. Can anybody tell me a website or store where i could find a camcorder on a budget of $250.00 or less?

A. I would try qvc or hsn. We bought our camcorder from one of the home shopping channels and we got one better than we thought we could afford. The let you divide the payments up on a lot of their items but you get it delivered to your home paying just the first payment and S & H. There is no interest on these "flexible payments." We use it for all of our major electronic purchases.

For instance on hsn.com the have this one JVC 32x Optical Zoom MiniDV Camcorder - Item: 105-831. for 279.99 or 4 payments of 69.99 and free s & h.

If you don't have cable they have websites:
