What is the best camcorder to buy for a family?

Q. I would like to know a make and model of the best camcorder! I need to video kids sporting events. The zoom feature must be better than average to view from stands and get close up good quality shots. Budget is not as important, but must be reasonable. What are some other factors to consider? I have have never purchased camcorder, only digital cam with video capability. Thanks!

A. HV30 LOVE. Beautiful resolution, easy to use, zoom will be adeqate. You will need a firewire port on your computer and a firewire cable. If you a mac your are in luck. If not you might need to install a port.

what is the best way to store videos off of this camera? DVD, external hard drive, or on SD cards?
Q. I take lots of video, am a veteran 8 mm tape person, so this SD digital thing is still new to me. I take lots of video, in short increments, of my kids sports, events, etc. I'd like to store them on DVD to make labels for ease of use down the road. Is this a hard process? Do I need any special devices? Any help would be so much appreciated!
The camera is a Sony Handycam DCR-SX45!

A. what you have is a 30 GB HDD camera. if you archive on DVD you must take into account that DVD only holds 2 GB of data. also if you put into the standard DVD format that will play on your TV set, then it will be hard to rip if you want to use for editing later on. if you keep in the original format used in the camcorder as a DVD-rom, then it won't play on your TV set, but will be ready to edit on your computer. What might be the best archive for your circumstances is to get a 500 GB external USB media drive. Using a hard drive means you can also store text files to record important ancillary info like names of people, dates, events and such. and even put photos of the same events in a separate folder.
