Q. I need help figuring out specs and figures to buy a new camcorder. Brands, models, etc.
A. 52x is good, but you will need hands of granite to hold it steady. any zoom more than about 6x cannot be handheld, you will need to get a good quality tripod.
If you use non sony DVDs with a sony camcorder can it hurt or damage the camera?

A. No it will be ok, BUT its better to go for branded disks rather than the mega cheap ones they wont damage your camera but you may get more read write errors. You do get something for paying just that little but more.
I brought some DVD's no brand and very cheap out of 100, 20 were no good, I brought some slightly better ones out of 100 none were faulty.
