Can I connect an external mic to a camcorder without a mic jack but with a headphone jack?

Q. I have a camcorder that allows me to connect my headphones, but it has no mic jack, is it still possible to connect an external mic?

I have a AIPTEK p-HD(portable high definition) camcorder

A. A headphone socket is only for plugging headphones into and not a microphone. As said above you may be able to hard wire a microphone to the inside of your camcorder but you will need to know what you are doing and it will invalidate your warranty. Better get a camcorder with a mic socket.

How do I connect an external mic and monitor to a Panasonic Lumix GF2?
Q. I recently bought a Panasonic Lumix GF2 and I'd like to connect an external mic and monitor at the same time. I've heard you can buy hotshoe adapters. Are these universal? Is it possible to attach anything other than a flash through the hotshoe?

Any help much appreciated.

A. The Panasonic Lumix GF2 is designed to be a still image capture device. The highly compressed video capture capability is a "convenience feature" and not full featured like a decent camcorder.

There is no "audio-in" connection. There is no way to use an external mic connected to this camera and expect the mic to replace the built-in mic's capture capability. You can use an external audio recording device - field recorder - to record the audio. Then when the video is imported for editing in a computer, import that audio from the field recorder, synch, and mute the audio captured by the camera.

Hot shoe accessory shoes in still image cameras are generally used to trigger the flash so it lights the same time the shutter opens. There is no connection between the Lumix GF2's hot shoe and the audio subsystem of the Lumix GF2.

Some Sony and Canon camcorders (designed to capture video and audio) have proprietary hot shoe accessory mounts on their cameras. The allow connection of several things - including a camera-mounted mic designed to work specifically with that accessory shoe. This is not the case with the Lumix GF2. Can other things be attached using the accessory shoe mount? Yes - assuming the mount can work with the shoe. Many times, even though it is a hot shoe, mounted accessories have no connection into the shoe other than using it as a mounting point on the camera/camcorder.

"Hot Shoe adapters" are not universal - though many companies sometime use similar configurations. Generally, still image camera hot shoes will be similar - and video image recording device hot shoes used for different purposes are not shaped or sized like the still image hot shoes. Cold shoe accessory mounts are generally similar across the technologies...
