how do i know which camcorder has good image quality?

Q. how is the image quality measured? what should i look out for in the specifications to judge if the image quality is good on a particular camcorder (dv or mini dv types)

A. One word: 3 Chip. It means instead of combining color (which regular camcorders do), you combine light, giving the video a better picture. You would want to judge the pixels. Check out your local camera store for more info.

Do Hard Drive camcorders still have lower image quality than miniDV ones?
Q. All websites suggest that Hard drive camcorders provide lower image quality than miniDV because of their mpeg-2 compressed format. Is that still true, or is this something that has been fixed on the newer hard drive camcorders? Also is there a difference in this specific regard between the cheaper (~$600) hard drive camcorders and the more expensive ones today?

A. Yes, HDD camcorders still record in mpeg2 video format - at least for the standard definition (not HD).

mpeg2 is the same format as standard DVDs, so the video quality is not bad. If the miniDV videos are transferred to a DVD, you would have about the same quality as the video straight out of a HDD camcorder.

The major drawback with the HDD camcorders is that mpeg2 is not a good format for editing (i.e., compressed & interlaced)
