Can you help me determine if this camcorder is a good buy?

Q. I need a camcorder and I'm looking at one with a 10x optical zoom. I don't know anything about camcorders so is this a good number for the optical zoom? Also, is the digital zoom number important when purchasing a camcorder? What number optical and digital zoom would be the best to get?

Please help me....I need to buy a camcorder by next Friday. Thank you!

A. What's your budget?
What are you recording?
Is it to upload to the web or watch on an HDTV?

As for the zooms, optical is the only one that matters. Digital zoom simply blows up the size of the pixels causing degradation in picture quality. On my old (circa 2001) camcorder, it gives the option to turn the digital zoom all the way off or limit it to 10x and 20x- I always leave it OFF.

As for what optical zoom number to aim for, it depends on what you're recording. A kids soccer game that you're 50ft+ away from, 10x is good. Indoor birthday parties, 5x would do.

You're budget is going to determine quality, but I would definitely try to get a 720p or 1080p HD camcorder, which range from $120 for a micro camcorder to $500 for a real 1080p camcorder.

720p SD card based micro camcorder:

1080p entry level real camcorder

supposedly on sale at Costco for $349 right now

While Canon makes the best consumer 1080p models

How can I mute the microphone on my Panasonic PV-GS150 MiniDV Camcorder?
Q. I am recording soccer games and don't want the talk between me and my friends to be heard by coaches who will later review the tapes.

A. you are in luck, this camera has an external mic input. simply get a miniplug that is not wired, from radio shack, or cut the wire off of an old earphone plug. Using this "dummy plug" will mute the camera mic, and since there is no mic connected to the dummy, no audio will be recorded. when you need audio, simply pull the dummy to restore normal camera operation.
