A. I have a few that I would recommend and they have great price tags.

Converting .mov (QuickTime) files to a format that can be edited on a PC using Windows Movie Maker (WMM)?
Q. I have an Aiptek digital camcorder bought in November of 2010. I believe it is an Aiptek HD-1 since I can't find anything on the Aiptek website that looks exactly like it but it at least has the same features. It has 720p HD recording capacity and has been a great little camera. I have all kinds of movies that I would like to put together for the friends I have made this summer so that they can look back on the fun times in the future. (I'm an intern from across the country.)

Here's my problem:
The camera ONLY records in .mov, regardless if I do HD (720p) or QVGA (WEB) at 30fps or WVGA (DVD) at 60fps. I record in the HD because it gives me the largest beginning aspect and I know that if you start with more pixels it's better because you're only going to lose them along the way. I've heard that the majority of converters will not only add frames and make your videos choppy but that they will actually try to compress your videos so that they're only good for viewing on a hand-held device. I'm not opposed to this, but I am opposed to being restricted to watching anything on a 3" (Zune) screen. No, I won't own an iPod because I want what's left of my eyesight.

Windows Movie Maker for xp does NOT recognize .mov files so I can only watch them in QuickTime. I do NOT have QuickTime Pro and don't know how to use it. I'm also wary of purchasing a $30 product that all it can do is convert. (Which is why I don't have Apple products to begin with. I have a thing against collecting stuff that only has a single use.)

I would like it to be free because I'm on a laptop with xp but my computer at home has Windows Vista and I can probably just do the Windows Live Movie Maker from there. But I'm hardpressed to ask an office of 30 people for their personal addresses so that I can work on this and send it to them after I finish. I was hoping to be able to finish this project by the end of the summer (August 6, 2010) to give it to them.

I can't get spyware or malware on this computer. It's borrowed and they need it when I get back.

SO:
I just need something that will convert a .mov file on a PC to a PC-friendly, HD-quality file I can edit in Windows Movie Maker for XP.

Thanks!

A. Hi, first, please make sure the video could be compatible with windows movie maker.
Here are Supportable formats for windows movie maker:
Video files: .asf, .avi, .wmv
Movie files: .mpeg1, .mpeg, .mpg, .m1v, .mp2
Audio files: .wav, .snd, .au, .aif, .aifc, .aiff
Windows Media files: .asf, .wm, .wma, .wmv
Still images: .bmp, .jpg, .jpeg, .jpe, .jfif, .gif

If you do not have the right format, try a total video converter to convert it to .wmv which works well on windows movie maker. If you like, try this total video converter which im using now. it works great for me.

Verizon Droid x or Droid 2?

Q. Droid x or Droid 2 GLOBEL

A. You should buy Motorola DROID 2 Global Android Phone, White (Verizon Wireless)

Android 2.2-powered smartphone with 3.7-inch touchscreen, redesigned QWERTY keyboard, improved 1.2 GHz processor, and global roaming capabilities
Google mobile services including Google Maps with Navigation for voice prompted turn-by-turn directions; can be used as a 3G Mobile Hotspot
8 GB internal plus 8 GB preloaded microSD memory; Wireless-N Wi-Fi networking; Bluetooth stereo music; 5-megapixel camera/camcorder

I really want to like Android but...?
Q. ..there are a few things holding me back and I wondered if there was a work around/fix for my gripes.

I owned a HTC Desire for a while after owning an iPhone 3g, I'm a big fan of iOS and still keeps my games on apps on a 2nd iPod touch, although it also leaves a lot to be desired. Apples vertically integrated controlled method works to an extent, but they are becoming far to perfectionist, limiting features until its done the Apple way. If only Android & Apple could have some drunken love child. Android has the features but as always with google products, if feels like it was some geeks side project still in beta (it usually is). Don't get me wrong, I use google products and services every day and love them (gmail, youtube, reader etc) but they seem to be less polished then iOS applications and software.

I'm currently eying a Windows series 7 phone, but I'm holding off til Nokia releases a flag ship model. They seem to have found a nice middle ground between iOS and Android (controlled to avoid fragmentation but not too controlled as to give the features their geek users want, apple seem to avoid this to keep the simplicity in mind and dumb it down for technophobes) but until Microsoft manage to catch up in the features and Apps area I need something to keep me busy. Microsoft already has the fluid OS and developer support behind it, and working with Nokia ensures hardware acceleration. I'm also geeking over their new iOS apps.

Getting to the point, my gripe with Android its app management, many users were using task killers to stop unwanted applications from running in the background, taking up cache and battery. The arrival of 2.2 froyo, provided better system management and automatically kills idle apps when the phone needs it. However I wish Android had a system closer to the Windows, which is what i hoped they were originally going for. Unlike iOS with app freezing and switching, android has "full multi-tasking" meaning apps can run fully as they would when using them but in the background which is great, but its seems like Google has set to provide official support to fight against start up programs. When i owned a HTC Desire and received the 2.2 update, I deleted the task manager, and let Android do its thing, yet through the day the phone would start to lag under the pressure, I checked to see what apps were running and apps like sky news, the weather, gmail and HTC's preinstalled apps were running automatically, i cleared the cache and closed the app, but again it would happen through the day, even when not using the app for days on end, it would still start up automatically. I wonder if google are going to improve on this and let the users disable the apps processes altogether, when closed it should stay closed, similar to Windows. On Windows i use an app called 'CCleaner' which does a bevy of tricks, but one of its most helpful tools is to see what startup processes begin when you first turn on your computer. Disable these improves windows significantly in load up time and useability. One of the main offenders of these by the way is Messenger, iTunes and Google updater.

I have a few other gripes with Android too but nothing significant that would hold me back from buying it (like skins, fragmentation and touch screen accuracy- noticeably better on iOS and WP7). Preferably I'll go for a Galaxy tab without the Galaxy (Stock android 4-5 inch bedside device)

What are your thoughts, do you know if Google will address this issue, it seems like Google opted for the independent management with android to help less techie users, yet anyone who owns a computer knows how to open and close apps, and doesn't expect them to open again when closed.

Can i still travel with Ocean Village once she has moved?

Q. I found out that Ocean Village was moving to australia. Not being funny, but it honestly did break my heart. All my treasured memories lie on that ship, i traveled with her 4 years ago with my family around the greek islands (Ocean Village One). Never had a better time in my life. ive missed it dearly ever since i had to get off and i promised myself i will visit her again, Then i found out she was going. Never cried so much in my life, and im a bloke. I met someone very Special on there, we shared a lot of memories. I have the holiday recorded on my dads camcorder, watch it all the time. I have pictures, its been 4 years and i still haven't gotten over it. I just hope to god we can still travel with her once she has moved to Australia, or she will come back to us, were she belongs.

A. She will be be called Pacific Pearl and will be part of P&O Cruises (Australia) so you will be able to travel on her on one or two week cruises out of Australia and New Zealand by booking via them. She is refitting in Singapore in November and December and will start cruising under her new flag from just before Christmas 2010.

Ocean Village 2 did the same this time last year and is now known as Pacific Jewel.

All details and booking info is available via the P&O (Australia) website on the link shown below.
