They take decent quality pictures, I'm not sure about videos though. My little cousin has one and he's 5. He loves it! He always wants to take pics.

Hopefully thats helpful.

what is the best video camera to take shots at soccer games, indoor basketball and kid parties inside?
Q.

A. Best is relative!

At least we know what you want to use the camera for, so that is a big help!

Start out with your audience, who is going to watch your video? Is it strictly for yourself, or do you want to make copies for other people, or is it for professional use?

Second, are you going to edit the video, will you want to edit video in the future?

Third, what is your budget? Do you need to buy accessories like a tripod (Highly recomended) cables, tapes, etc.

If you simply want something to play at home then a DVD recording camera might be the best bet. (I am not sure, but I know NERO DVD burning software has a quick copy feature that might allow you to burn copies for the grandparents.)

If you want to edit your video, I would recomend mini DV or hard drive cameras. It is easy to import the footage into a computer (Especially a Mac) and edit it, adding titles and special effects.

If you are looking to become a professional videographer, then you will need to purchase a 3 ccd mini-dv camera at a minimum, or you could look at the new HDV (High definition format) cameras.

Hope that helps
Tony

Professional videographer, I work daily with mini DV, in all forms from consumer to professional

My video camera caught kids breaking my fence?

Q. I know I ask this question yesterday but I didn't explain it right. There has been some teenage boys breaking my fence over and over. About 7 times already. We fix it and they break it again. We bought CCTV cameras and caught them breaking it. The only thing is you can't zoom in from far away because it looks pixel. You can see how they look but the faces look pixel. Would the cops be able to identify these kids??? Were gonna keep a close look out for them to identify them. Were tired of this!!

A. You need to 1) talk to the police and tell them about the problem and what you're doing; and 2) find out where those kids live and talk to their parents about the problem. Admirable that you want to videotape the kids for proof, but may not get you anywhere as far as police or courts are concerned unless those kids cause harm to a person. You would do better in civil court suing their parents for the damages to your property, several times if necessary. The criminal justice system is already overloaded with property crimes and I think what you're really looking for is reimbursement for damages and for the kids to stop what they're doing. Only by getting the parents to be responsible for this will you get anywhere near success. Wish you luck, however.

Looking for a "prosumer" video camera mainly for filming random shots and my online sketch comedy?
Q. Hey guys, I'm currently a film student at the University of Michigan, though I'm just starting off in the major. I know quite a bit about cameras, but sadly I'm also broke as a joke. We use Panasonic HMC40's for our own in-class productions, but the price for one of those things is about $1600 with accessories. Ouch.

So here's what I need to ask YOU: Do you know of a solid HD video camera that will give me professional(ish) quality without breaking the bank? Here are some guidelines:

- Anywhere from $400-1000.
- SOLID HD (preferably 1080p, but 720p will do).
- Able to be imported to my computer and then onto YouTube. My PC does not have any Firewire ports, so that might be out of the question.
***My PC is quite old, but I'll be getting a decent one very soon, possibly a higher end Sony VAIO so that editing will not be a hassle. Keep that in mind.***
- The microphone may or may not be high quality, but an external mic port would be a nice addition.
- Optical zoom would be ideal, but a decent digital zoom would suffice.
- Anything else is slipping my mind at the moment, but I think you get the hint.

Like I said, this will probably be used mainly for online sketch comedy, so I'm just looking for polished video that can easily edited, compressed, and uploaded to YouTube. Thanks folks. Let me know if you want anything else that will aid in my "quest." Much love.
ALREADY REMEMBERED SOMETHING ELSE!

It doesn't have to be a full-on video camera. It can be a DSLR or digital camera that has HD video capabilities. I know the Olympus Pen makes some nice ones, but I hear they can get costly with the lenses and whatnot.

A. $400-1000, are you kidding, prosumer doesn't start until about $3500, and typically refers to 3 ccd cameras starting in HD about $6000

Solid HD...What is that? HD simply is a marketing term for any format that generates 1080 lines of res. It includes crappy cameras getting under 4 gigs /hour to cameras getting more than 1 gig a minute.

Import- The ONLY thing HD does well, because it actually has a LOWER data rate than the old MiniDv tape DV format cameras. It will still take 11 gigs/hour if you get any HD camera under about $2K.

Audio varies, even lower end cameras CAN have mic jacks.

Optical zoom is good, digital is about worthless, esp in a $500 camera.

DSLRs get the least compressed video and are nearly twice the data rate of anything else under $2000. The do have a host of other considerations including battery life, duty cycle (most can record for 15-20 min then are shut down to prevent overheating).

Advise: If you are bent on a HD camera in the price you mentioned, get the cheapest camera you can find with a good lens and mic. You should not have to spend more than $500. Between about $350 and $2000 there is NO difference in video format (Unless you embrace tape and firewire and get the very nice HDV format camcorders, Or go DSLR).

How to upload videos from my video camera to my computer?

Q. I looked at the guide and it said to put a CD in but it never came with a CD. It is a Digital Concepts pink video camera and the CD program was supposed to be Kids Imaging Studio.

A. i have the same camera and it didn't come with a cd. i need help uploading videos from it with the sd card.

What kind of video camera should we get?
Q. Which type of video camera is best to work with (and why do you think so)?

harddrive
memory stick
mini-CDs

We're having a kid and figure it's time to buy one. We're thinking get a less expensive one, and wait until the HD recording ones come down in price.

Thanks!

A. these are pictures you want to keep for decades. i would go with miniDV now. because this format is also used professionally, software and hardware support for this camera will be available for a long time. And it is available at good economy, but don't let the price fool you, it is exceptionally good video quality.

As to hard drive? that will take a lot of maintenance because you will have to go through several transfer steps before suitable for permanent storage. Remember, most people change out their computers (and hard drives) every 3 to 4 years. So keeping as a hard drive file facilitates editing now but is not an option for the long run. You will have to burn DVDs eventually or risk losing to obsolescence.

memory stick? even worse for long term storage. tape for 80 minutes of miniDV is 3 or 4 bucks. who can afford to buy a memory stick for every shooting event?

miniCD? no way, the video will be so compressed that moving objects such as kids running will be unrecognizable.

how to you view a video you have recorded with the discovery kids digital camera/video camera?

Q. we bought our daughter a used discovery kids digital camera/video camera. i can take video with it but i do not know how to watch the video after i take it. the camera did not come with a manual and i can't find it on line.

A. It seems that you use a USB cable to connect it to a computer and download the videos/photos that way.

From photos I can't tell what the button next to the USB socket says. Is it Mode? I'd guess that may switch between taking photos/videos and replaying them.

How to make photos from a digital video camera recording.?
Q. We have a Sony digital video camera that records on a small magnetic tape. When we watch recordings of our kids sports events, you can pause the recording and the still image on the TV is fantastic! Is there a way to turn these still images into photographs that can be developed at the drug store? I haven't tried taking a picture of the TV screen yet, we're looking for something a little higher tech.

A. Most editing programs will let you do a screen capture. This would be done on the computer.
