Importing videos from camcorder to iMovie issues?

Q. I am trying to upload videos from my camcorder to iMovie on my macbook but when I connect my camcorder (Sony DCR-HC40) to my Mac using the cable the videos that show up are from the memory stick, not the tape that I have in there. I have the camera on the tape setting, not the memory settings. I would appreciate any help I could get! Thanks

A. It's very easy to input your video from camera to your macbook,iMovie will automatically detect when you have a FireWire camcorder connected.Perhaps you may follow this step by step:
1.Connect camcorder to your Mac computer with cable (USB/Wifi)
2.Select mode of camcorder such as PC/Computer mode
3.iMovie will automatic open Import window
4.If DVD Player automatic open. just quit DVD Player first
5.Now, you can review your video or select "Import All"(make sure your switch is set to "Automatic")
6.If you select "Manual", you can import some clip to iMovie
7.If you import from Tape based device (DV/HDV), iMovie will automatic revise tape and import all
8.iMovie automatic create thumbnail video after complete import

How can I turn my camcorder into a webcam?
Q. I want to live stream some of my school's basketball games. I have a JVC GZ-HM35BU camcorder so how do I get that to work on my computer. I am going to use YouTube to live stream if that makes any difference.

A. Lets review. Start with reading the manual:
http://books.jvc.com/Download/109294190/LYT2501-001A-M.pdf

There is nothing referencing "streaming video"... USB does not stream video. If you look at page 10, that leave HDMI or the analog AV-out connection.

There is nothing about making this camcorder a webcam.

You told us nothing about your computer. *MOST* computers do not have inbound video capability - something else is needed. Assuming you do get some sort of external box, we assume the connection from the computer to the internet is wifi. High definition video will not work, so that eliminates the HDMI connection. Just for grins Blackmagic Design makes a box
http://www.blackmagicdesign.com/products/intensity
USB3 is required - and it needs external power.

A more practical solution is to use the AV-out from the camcorder to the AV-in of an analog/digital converter Blackmagic Design, Elgato, Roxio and a few others make them. External power may be required. Analog video uses way less bandwidth than high definition video.

Going back to the camcorder manual: Please refer to the bottom of page 8: What are your plans for the automatic shut down? You can use external power to the camcorder - or record the whole game. If you want to record the whole game without external power, we assume you have already upgraded the battery - see page 5 at the bottom.

Personally, with all the gyrations you need to go through, it will be less hassle and less money to replace the camcorder with something designed to stream video in the manner you want. I strongly suggest you revisit using this camcorder for streaming - it is possible, but not a good idea.

When I need the functions of a pickup truck, I use a pickup truck - not a SmartCar.

1 of Panasonic Pro AG-DVC7 MiniDV Proline Camcorder w/15x Optical Zoom?

Q. We are looking at buying this camcorder...My husband and I are currently in the wedding photography business and are looking to expand to the videography part of it. We do not have a lot of $ to spend, but we would like a good starter camera.... can anyone tell me a little about this camera.... can you download footage right to your computer? Is this a good starter camera? What else do we NEED that does not come with the usual basic camera? Thank you in advance!!!

A. The Panasonic AG-DVC7 miniDV tape based standard definition camcorder that has been discontinued.

This shoulder mount unit was the low-end of the professional line. As a shoulder mount, it is very helpful to keep a steady shot when you must be portable because of the shoulder mount capability - just like the news folks and their shoulder mount units. In your case, it is probably better to use some sort of other steadying device - fluid head tripod (Manfrotto, Libec) to start. Later, a GlideCam/SteadyCam system or camera crane (Kessler) can be considered.

This camera has only a 43mm diameter lens. It also has a single 1/4" imaging chip and 1/8" (3.5mm) stereo audio in jack. In my opinion, these are more "consumer grade". That this is in the pro lineup is most likely because of the shoulder-mount form factor.

Since we don't know what you are planning to pay for the AG-DVC7, it is a bit difficult to make other recommendations - but because the high definition wave is upon us, you might consider looking into the Sony HVR-HD1000U. It has essentially the same lens/imaging chip/mic input, and is a shoulder mount, but it provides the option of capturing standard definition DV, DV widescreen and high definition HDV format video to miniDV tape. Another worth looking at is the Sony HDR-FX7.

Other than the tripod... Mics and lights.
Mics: This can be a simple as a shotgun mic cabled to the audio-in jack. The cable needs to be long enough so the camcorder can be put in an unobtrusive place and the mic close enough to get the video. If the cable is longer than 12 feet, you should use shielded cable (so interference is not picked up and recorded). This could move you into a pro-grade mic - which uses XLR connectors. To connect XLR to 1/8", you need an XLR adapter - like those from juicedLink (CX231) or BeachTek (DXA-6).
Or...
A wireless clip-on mic or mics. Stay away from the low-end ones. They are usually in the FM, 900 MHz, 2.4 GHz or 5.8 GHz RF spectrum - these are shared with garage door openers, home cordless phones, wifi networks and others - and the base stations are subject to picking up interference from these and other sources. VHF is acceptable - UHF is best. Sennheiser, Audio Technica and Shure make the best units - but they are expensive.

Lights: This can be a simple as a camera mount light with built-in rechargeable battery (short illumination time) to a battery-belt powered pro system. Bescor and NRG Research are good sources.

Editing: MiniDV tape based camcorder have a DV port. This connects to a computer with a firewire cable - and connects to the computer's firewire port. USB will not work. USB-to-DV cable/converter/adapter things do not work. If your computer does not have a firewire port, hopefully it has an available expansion slot so you can add one. When the firewire cable is connected to the camcorder's DV port and the computer's working firewire port - and the camcorder is in Play mode (and the camcorder is plugged into an AC outlet), launch the computer's video editor and capture ot import the video. MovieMaker is included with Windows XP (SP2 or newer), Vista (and Windows 7). There is no version of MovieMaker and Windows XP that can deal with importing HDV and only certain combinations of Vista and MovieMaker that can. Sony Vegas and Adobe Premiere are the usual suspects. iMovie comes with Mac OSX and can deal with HDV (going back to iMovieHD 05). Final Cut is a step up for Macs.

Standard def DV will import to a computer and use about 14 gig of computer hard drive space. High definition HDV will import to the computer and use about 44 gig of computer hard drive space.

You will also want one or two high capacity rechargeable batteries from the camcorder manufacturer. The battery included in the box with the camcorder has a very short record time.

GOOD LUCK!

whats better? an archos 6o4 wifi or a sony psp?

Q.

A. Archos would be your best choice. Here is why...

Touch screen
The ARCHOS 604 WiFi features a large, 4.3-inch color touch screen LCD that allows you to navigate through menus easily with a stylus or even a fingertip.

WiFi
The integrated 802.11g wireless interface will appeal to those who want to access their media wherever they go, including surfing the Web, sending and receiving email from Web-based mail applications, and connecting the device to a home network to transfer files or play content directly from the network.

Store and view up to 300,000 photos5 (JPEG, PNG and BMP formats) and display slideshows with music and transition effect. Manage your files and folders directly on the device for a better mobility.

Music Player
Store up to 15,000 songs5 on the hard drive and play most popular music files such as MP3, WAV, WMA and protected WMA files. Easily organize songs with the enhanced ARCLibrary and customize your view by artist, album, type of music, title, year, and create your playlists without having to use a computer. Use the voice recorder to store notes quickly for a later use.

Charge and sync
Charge your ARCHOS 604 WiFi via the USB 2.0 interface or plug the device into the DVR station to get a quick charge (faster than USB). Purchase, download, subscribe to or rent protected video and music content from the Microsoft PlaysForSure websites. Using the high-speed USB 2.0 interface, the ARCHOS 604 WiFi will easily auto-synchronize this content with Windows Media® Player 10 each time you connect it to your PC, or convert your Windows Media® Player 10 library content to one of the many compatible formats (MP3, WMA, WAV, protected WMA, MPEG-41, WMV2 and protected Windows Media Video2).

In addition to that, they have refurbished 604 wiFi starting at $225. Not such a bad deal.

What is the best budget camcorder to live stream high school athletic events?

Q. I need a high quality camcorder no more than $300. We will be using it to stream high school sports live, which brings me to my supplement question. Supposedly, I know someone who knows how to set up this live streaming. But how would this be set up exactly? You would obviously need an internet connection (wifi or ethernet), but I'm not sure we have access to this.... Is it possible to use satellite streaming? Or is that impossible without internet and would it be very expensive? Thanks!

A. If "know someone who knows how to set up this live streaming" then start with them on which camcorders to investigate.

"Satellite streaming" means there is a satellite uplink (including a big dish and transmitters and such) and someone's paid for transponder space and time. It also presumes a "satellite downlinks" and access to processing the feed. I won't assume anything, but I don't *think* this will be available to you.

At $300 you are basically at the entry level for consumer grade camcorders. While these are typically well made electronics, I cannot characterize them as being "high quality" relative to video broadcast standards. Since there are no consumer camcorders that can digitally stream the video over USB until you hit the $800 range (like a Canon HV40, or any others using miniDV tape media storage will work because they use firewire), the best you can do is stream analog video.

So, given your budget - which is likely not enough - we have:

Any camcorder with AV-out. This is pretty much any camcorder - but you need to be sure the AV-out can be used to monitor what the camera can see - again, pretty much any camcorder. This plugs into an "Analog/Digital converter". The A/D converter plugs into the computer. Then the "someone who knows how to set up this live streaming" can finish up... including the connection to the Local Area Network that connects to the internet...

Use a tripod or other steadying device. Consider using a camera that uses a wired remote. The control is mounted to the tripod handle and controls zoom and other things. Use the AC adapter and be sure the camcorder's "auto sleep" is disabled. You are using a camcorder in a manner for which it was not designed.

Some Sony and Canon camcorders have a combo AV/remote port. You can do one or the other - not both at the same time. Some camcorders use a LANC. This will work great. As far as I know, the least expensive with a separate LANC is the Canon HV40... then comes the Sony HDR-FX7 (I think). These are both more than you want to spend.

Whats the best camcorder? (for a certain price!)?
Q. okay i have a Canon PowerShot A560 and the recording is pretty good but when i put it on youtube it looks terrible. so i want to get a new camera soon.

What is the best video camcorder in HD, that i can put on YouTube, edit in Windows Movie Maker, and is 200$ or UNDER? thanks!

A. I use this camcorder for person/professional use although I am thinking of upgrading to something a bit more expensive. I love every aspect of it: full hd video, touch panel, easy to upload videos to youtube & facebook, face detection, mp3 recording, and a ready to use wifi:

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B003ZHTPOM?ie=UTF8&tag=dailyelect-20&linkCode=as2&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=B003ZHTPOM

If you are looking for a cheaper one, I have heard some really nice things about this one:

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B002JPJII4?ie=UTF8&tag=dailyelect-20&linkCode=as2&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=B002JPJII4

If you are looking for a more traditional camcorder, this one is great for its price:

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001OI2VXG?ie=UTF8&tag=dailyelect-20&linkCode=as2&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=B001OI2VXG

I strongly recommend you get the first one I linked to because it's simply too good to be true for that price and I'm sure you'll love it. Hope this helped!

want surveillance system in buses that use wifi and tiny zooming camera?

Q. Give me the unit cost of DVR with wifi and very tiny zooming, coloured, audio camera. The wifi maximum operation distance.

A. You might get a better answer in the camcorder category.

What is the difference between these two camcorders?
Q. I've been searching for a camcorder and I narrowed it down to two different camcorders, I don't really see a difference in them other than the digital zoom and price but is one a lot better than the other or are they basically the same? I'm not very good at picking out a camcorder.

JVC GZ-E200 v.s JVC GZ-EX210

A. Digital zoom is useless and should be disabled when you get the camcorder. Use only Optical zoom.

Product comparison:
http://camcorder.jvc.com/product.jsp?modelId=MODL029070&pathId=171&page=14
The two cameras you listed are the two middle cameras in the comparison table.

The EX210 has wifi, high speed video capture, pet detection and certain art effects that the E200 does not have.

Whether these are important enough to you to justify the difference in $ is up to you. The things that make the real differences that impact video quality will be lens filter size, imaging chip size and video compression. And between these two camcorders, those specs are the same. BTW, neither has a mic jack... so just a heads up on that.

Looking for a mic that works with a camcorder?

Q. Hi there. I'm going to be filming some movies soon on a camcorder of mine and wanted to get a mic that can be hooked up somewhere on a persons body(probably like the neck part) Like they do in jackass. It cant be a cord it has to be a wireless mic. Does anybody know what I'm talking about? Where can I buy a mic like this? Anything will help. Thank you.

A. Before you buy a mic, it would be helpful to know which camcorder you are planning to use. Since many camcorders do not have a mic jack, buying a mic would be a waste of money unless you plug the mic into a filed recorder like a Zoom H2 or H4 or some other field recorder like those from Tascam, Edirol, M-audio and many others...

Back to the mic... What is your budget?

Wireless lavalieres are very useful. I use some from Sennheiser. Audio Technica, Shure, EV and a few others make good ones. UHF is best. VHF is acceptable. Those in FM, 900 MHz, 2.4 GHz, and 5.4 GHz bands are in "shared spectrum" with portable cordless residential phones, wifi, garage door openers and many other RF emission sources. You should stay away from them or risk recording interference with the audio. I have nothing good to say about Samson or Nady (other than I would not suggest them).

The mic element is connected with a cable to a body pack. The body pack transmits the wireless audio signal to a base station. The base station can be portable (Sennheiser and Audio Technica make good ones in the mid and high end) and battery powered or the base station can be large and AC-powered (Shure makes good ones as do Sennheiser and Audio Technica and several others).

bhphotovideo is a good source for all video items including audio for video. Adorama is another decent source. Guitar Center carries some of this stuff online - not too much stock in the stores.

Good wireless gear is not inexpensive.

Is it better to buy a cellular or a camcorder?
Q. if it's a camcorder what have that to have?

what's blu ray and bluetooth.
if a computer has wifi but not bluetooth can it communicate with one with bluetooth?

Is better a blackberry or an iphone?
why?
thanks.

A. The Latest iPhone4s beats Blackberry to dust.
The latest iPhone 4s has millions of apps, and even has the famous iMessege (recent) which beats the BBM to dust.
The latest iPhone 4s also contains siri, your new best friend, and a 8MP camera,at the end,the prices are some what similar,so I would say you should go with the Apple device.
