Q. I am needing to video my classroom for National Board Certification. What would be best for me to hook to my camcorder to enhance everyone's sound? It needs to be able to pick up the voices of those in the back of the room, too. By the way, I can't spend too much!
A. What model camcorder do you have? What kind of audio input does it have?
Microphones don't enhance sound. They simply record it. The amount, type, and position of your mics will help in coverage of an area. Enhancement can only be done on an audio control board or in editing software outside of your camcorder.
On a professional camcorder camcorder, you will have two xlr ports. External camcorder microphones?

If I connect wireless mic (receiver) or any external mic (H1, Rodeo...) to camcorder or DSLR, it occupies one line.
I suppose when I import that sound into Editing application that I get Mono audio track (or two mono traks if I use internal camcorder mic).
Can that mono track be exported from Editing application as Stereo sound ?

A. After editing, you would have two mono channels with the same audio unless you make more changes - for example if someone walks across the screen, the audio should move with the motion. The audio editor application's panning control can do that.
Some editors offset the "other" audio by a frame or two to make it sound fuller.
I use a XLR adapter (BeachTek or juicedLink) and flip the Stereo/Mono switch to Mono. This way, both channels are recorded with the same audio. When recording music or other audio that requires spatial separation, I flip the switch to Stereo and use a stereo mic (Audio Technica AT-825).
The other useful thing with the XLR adapters I use is the audio gain control knobs are right there to use - not buried in a menu and difficult to get to...
And the XLR adapter allows use of good XLR-based shotgun or dynamic mics. My Sennheiser portable base stations can use either a 1/8" connector for directly connecting to the camcorder or into the 1/8" connector in the XLR adapter or use XLR connectors allowing for use of two different mics through the XLR adapter. (The DXA-6 and CX-237 can provide phantom power over XLR if needed by the mic.)
