Compare the specs. Specifically, "Lens Filter Diameter" and imaging chip size. In both cases, bigger is generally better.
In your case, for a video light, if you get a Canon light, the light may need to mount to the camcorder using the camcorder's accessory shoe. I don't think the R series has an accessory shoe. So... use an external light and camera bracket
