A. Consumer-grade camcorders don't record audio very well. They have such small microphones and some are only mono and not stereo. Plus you have no control over balance and gain of the audio. One better-than-nothing suggestion is choosing a camcorder with a microphone jack and using a good quality mic will help a lot. But the best way to record audio, especially piano is with a audio recording device, like a Zoom H4n or other recorder. Using a recorder with allow you to balance the inputs and set the proper gain. And you can use more then one microphone (channels). You still shoot your video but use the audio from the recorder to replace the audio of the video in your video editing program. The use of field recorders and mating the audio to film is done all the time in major motion pictures.

What kind of video cameras do people use at concerts that get such good sound quality?
Q. I've watched a few videos on youtube and they have excellent sound quality. I was curious to see what kind of cameras they may have been using.
A. two options. 1 they use the audio from the CD album and not the concert sound. or 2 they use an audio recorder to get the live concert sound. getting the best video pictures runs contrary to getting the best audio, you can't do both with the same camcorder without a lot of compromise of quality. The editing process allows combining video and audio from different sources and matching them. in the old days, i used a portable beta HiFi video recorder just for the audio. unlike analog audio recorders, video runs at precise speed, making it easier to match up in the linear editing process. today you can chose from a number of good digital audio recorders, such as the Olympus LS10 that produce digital files that are ideal for use with a non-linear digital video editor.
